When trouble arises
One of the following may be the cause
of the problem:
 The electronic key may not be func-
tioning properly. ( P.356)
 There may not be sufficient fuel in
the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle. ( P.176)
 The engine may be flooded.
Try to restart the engine again fol-
lowing correct starting procedures.
( P.140)
 There may be a malfunction in the
engine immobilizer system.
( P.62)
 There may be a malfunction in the
shift control system.
* ( P.143)
 There may be a malfunction in the
steering lock system.
*: It may not be possible to shift the shift
position other than P.
One of the following may be the cause
of the problem:
 The 12-volt battery may be dis-
charged. ( P.357)
 The 12-volt battery terminal con-
nections may be lo ose or corroded.
( P.300)
The engine starting system may be
malfunctioning due to an electrical
problem such as electronic key battery
depletion or a blown fuse. However, an
interim measure is available to start the
engine.
One of the following may be the cause
of the problem:
 One or both of the 12-volt battery
terminals may be disconnected.
( P.300)
 The 12-volt battery may be dis-
charged. ( P.357)
 There may be a malfunction in the
steering lock system.
If the engine will not start
(LC500)
If the engine will not start even
though correct starting procedures
are being followed ( P.140), con-
sider each of the following points:
The engine will not start even
though the starter motor oper-
ates normally.
The starter motor turns over
slowly, the interior lights and
headlights are dim, or the horn
does not sound or sounds at a low
volume.
The starter motor does not turn
over
The starter motor does not turn
over, the interior lights and head-
lights do not turn on, or the horn
does not sound.

cannot be repaired, or if repair procedures
are unknown.
When the engine does not start, the
following steps can be used as an
interim measure to start the engine if
the engine switch is functioning nor-
mally:

Press the parking brake switch to
check that the parking brake is set.
(P.162)
Parking brake indicator will come on.
2 Turn the engine switch to ACCES-
SORY mode.
3 Press and hold the engine switch
for about 15 seconds while
depressing the brake pedal firmly.
Even if the engine can be started using
the above steps, the system may be
malfunctioning. Have the vehicle
inspected by your Lexus dealer. One of the following may be the cause
of the problem:

The electronic key may not be func-
tioning properly. ( P.356)
 There may not be sufficient fuel in
the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle. ( P.176)
 There may be a malfunction in the
immobilizer system. ( P.62)
 There may be a malfunction in the
shift control system.
* ( P.147)
 There may be a malfunction in the
steering lock system.
 The hybrid system may be malfunc-
tioning due to an electrical problem
such as electronic key battery
depletion or a blown fuse. However,
depending on the type of malfunc-
tion, an interim measure is available
to start the hybrid system.

position other than P.
Starting the engine in an emer-
gency
If the hybrid system will not
start (LC500h)
Reasons for the hybrid system not
starting vary depending on the situ-
ation. Check the following and per-
form the appropriate procedure:
The hybrid system will not start
even though the correct starting
procedure is being followed.

 The 12-volt battery may be dis-
charged. ( P.357)
 The 12-volt battery terminal con-
nections may be loose or corroded.

One of the following may be the cause
of the problem:
 The 12-volt battery may be dis-
charged. ( P.357)
 One or both of the 12-volt battery
terminals may be disconnected.

Contact your Lexus dealer if the problem
cannot be repaired, or if repair procedures
are unknown.
When the hybrid system does not start,
the following steps can be used as an

tem if the power switch is functioning

2 Pull the tab.
LC500h: Using the tab to open the
fuel filler door may not allow for an
adequate reduction in fuel tank pres-
sure before refuelin g. To prevent fuel
from spilling out, turn the cap slowly
when removing it.
During refueling, fuel may spill out from
If you lose your keys
New genuine mechanical keys can
be made by your Lexus dealer using
another mechanical key and the
key number stamped on your key
number plate. Keep the plate in a
safe place such as your wallet, not in
the vehicle.
NOTICE
■When an electronic key is lost
If the electronic key remains lost, the risk
of vehicle theft increases significantly.
Visit your Lexus deal er immediately with
all remaining electron ic keys that were
provided with your vehicle.
If the fuel filler door cannot
be opened
LC500:
If the fuel filler door opener switch
cannot be operated, the following
procedure can be used to open the
fuel filler door.
LC500h:
If the fuel filler door opener switch
cannot be operated, contact your
Lexus dealer to service the vehicle.
In case where refueling is urgently
necessary, the following procedure
can be used to open the fuel filler
door.

the filler opening due to air being dis-
charged from inside the fuel tank.
Therefore, fill the fuel tank carefully and
slowly.
■When the electronic key does not work
properly
●Make sure that the smart access system
with push-button start has not been deac-
tivated using the Remote Touch or at your
Lexus dealer. If it is off, turn the function
on.
●Check if battery-saving mo de is set. If it is
set, cancel the function. ( P.108)
Use the mechanical key ( P.97) in
order to perform th e following opera-
tions:
WARNING
■After opening the fuel filler door
Make sure to put back the cover to the
center of the rear seat. Failure to do so
may cause an accident.
NOTICE
■After opening the fuel filler door
●Secure the tab in its original position.
●Install the tab so that it does not cover
the clip installation position . Fail-
ure to do so may cause damage to the
clip and make it impossible to install
the cover.

If the electronic key does not
operate properly
If communication between the
electronic key and vehicle is inter-
rupted ( P.108) or the electronic
key cannot be used because the
battery is depleted, the smart
access system with push-button
start and wireless remote control
cannot be used. In such cases, the
doors and trunk can be opened and
the engine <hybrid system> can be
started by following the procedure
below.
NOTICE
■In case of a smart access system with
push-button start malfunction or
other key-rela ted problems
Take your vehicle with all the electronic
keys provided with your vehicle to your
Lexus dealer as soon as possible.

■Locking and unlocking the door
1 Push in the depression on the front
edge of the driver’s door handle.
2 Insert the mechanical key while
pulling on the driver’s door handle.
3 Turn the key in order to perform the
following operations.
Locks both side doors
Closes the windows
* (turn and
hold)
Unlocks the door
Turning the key rearward unlocks the
driver’s door. Turning the key once again
within 5 seconds unlocks the other door.
Opens the windows* (turn and
hold)
*: This setting must be customized at your Lexus dealer.
■Opening the trunk
Unlock the doors, and press the trunk opener switch.

Depress the brake pedal.
2 Touch the Lexus emblem side of the
electronic key to the engine switch
<power switch>.
When the electronic key is detected, a
buzzer sounds and the engine switch
<power switch> will turn to IGNITION ON
mode <ON mode>.
When the smart access system with push-
button start is deactivated in customization
setting, the engine switch <power switch>
will turn to ACCESSORY mode.

WARNING
■When using the mechanical key and
operating the power windows
Operate the power window after check-
ing to make sure that there is no possibil-
ity of any passenger having any of their
body parts caught in the window.
Also, do not allow children to operate the
mechanical key. It is possible for children
and other passengers to get caught in
the power window.

3 Firmly depress the brake pedal and
check that is shown on the
multi-information display.
4 Press the engine switch <power
switch>.
In the event that the engine <hybrid sys-
tem> still cannot be started, contact
your Lexus dealer.
■Stopping the engine <hybrid system>
Set the parking brake, shift the shift position
to P and press the engine switch <power
switch> as you normally do when stopping
the engine <hybrid system>.
■Electronic key battery
As the above procedure is a temporary
measure, it is recomme nded that the elec-
tronic key battery be replaced immediately
when the battery is depleted. ( P.318)
■Changing engine switch <power switch>
modes
Release the brake pedal and press the
engine switch <power switch> in step 3
above.
The engine <hybrid system> does not start
and modes will be ch anged each time the
switch is pressed. ( P.142, 146)
Use the mechanical key ( P.97) in
order to perform th e following opera-
tions:
■Locking and unlocking the doors
 P.355
■Opening the trunk
1 Slide the rear passengers’ seat
belts towards the outside.
2 Insert your fingers at the positions
marked and pull towards you to
remove the cover in the center of
the rear seat.
If the 12-volt battery is dis-
charged
The following procedures may be
used to start the engine <hybrid sys-
tem> or opening the doors, trunk or
glove box if the 12-volt battery is
discharged.
You can also call your Lexus dealer
or a qualified repair shop.

3Insert the mechanical key into the
cylinder and turn it clockwise to
open. The glove box can be opened by per-
forming the following
operations after
unlocking the doors.
If the glove box is locked, unlock it with the
mechanical key. ( P.254)
1 Remove the cover using a flathead
screwdriver.
To prevent damage to the cover, cover the
tip of the screwdriver with a rag.
2Push the flathead screwdriver into
the part shown in the illustration to
open the glove box.
■After opening the glove box
The glove box can be opened normally by
closing the glove box after restarting the
engine <hybrid system>.
If you have a set of jumper (or booster)
WARNING
■After unlocking the trunk
Make sure to put back the cover to the
center of the rear seat. Failure to do so
may cause an accident.
NOTICE
■When installing the cover in the cen-
ter of the rear seat
Make sure that the seat belts are not
caught in the cover. Failure to do so may
cause damage to the cover installation

When trouble arises
cables and a second vehicle with a 12-
volt battery, you can jump start your
vehicle using the following procedure.
1 Confirm that the electronic key is
being carried.
When connecting the jumper (or booster)
cables, depending on the situation, the
alarm may activate and doors locked.

2 Open the hood ( P.289) and
open the fuse box cover.
Push the tab in and lift the lid off.

4Connect a positive jumper cable clamp to on your vehicle and connect the
clamp on the other end of the positive cable to on the second vehicle.
Then, connect a negative cable clamp to on the second vehicle and con-
nect the clamp at the other end of the negative cable to .
