comprehensive environmental protection.
The objectives are for the natural resources

whi chtakes the requirements of both nature
an d hu manity in to account.
Yo ut oo can make a contribution towards
protecting the environment by operating
your vehicle in an environmentally-responsi-
ble manner.
Fue lconsumption and the rate of en gine,
tra nsmission, brake and tyre wear dep end
on the following:
! the operating conditions of your vehicle
! your driving style
Yo u can influence bothofthese condition s. Therefore, bear the following in
mind:
Operating conditions
! Avoid drivi ngshort dista nces as this
inc reases fuel consumption.
! Make sure that tyre pressures are
alway scorrect.
! Do not carry any unnecessary we ight.
! Keep an eyeonthe vehic le's fuel con-
sumption.
! Remove roof racks once you no longer
need them.
! A regularly serviced vehicle will contrib-

! Always have service work carried out at
a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. at a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre. Style of driving:
!
Do not depress the accelerator pedal
when starting the engine.
! Do not warm up the engine with the
vehicle st ationary.

Introduction
Op erating safety Operating safety
G
Risk of accident Work incorrectl
ycarrie dout on electronic
equipment an dits software could stop this
equipment working. Th eelectronic systems
are networked via int erfaces. Tampering
with these electronics systems could even
ca usema lfunctions in systems that have not
be en modif ied. Such malfunctions co uld
seriously impair the operating safety of your
vehicle, and thus your own safety.
Other work onormod ifications to the vehi-
cl e that have been carried out incorrectly
coul dalso jeopardise operating saf ety.
Som esafety syste ms onlyop era te when the
engine is running. For this reason, do not
switch off the engine while driving. G
Risk of accident Always
have maintenance work carried out
at a qualif ied specialist workshop which has
the necessary specia list knowledge and
tools to carry out the work re quired.
Merce des-Ben zrec ommends that you use a
Merc edes-Benz Service Centre for this pur-
pose.
In particular, work re levant to safety oron
safety-relat edsystems must be carried out
at a qualifie dsp ecialist workshop. G
Risk of accident A heavy impact against the vehicle under-
body, tyres or wheels could damage your
vehicl
eif, for example, the vehicle bottoms
out on rough terrain or is driven over an
ob stacle athig hspee d, for example. This
also applies to vehicles fitted with under-
body protection.
In this ca se,h aveyour ve hiclec hecked at a
qualified specialist workshop which has the
necessary specialist kn owledge and tools to
carry out the work requir ed. Mercedes-Benz
recommends that you use a Mercedes-Be nz
Servi ceCentre for this purpose.
In parti cular, work relevant to safety or on
safety-related systems must be carrie dou t
at a qualified specialist workshop. 209en_d2.boo Seite

Getting started
Driving
The < seat belt warni ng lamp in the
instrument cluster reminds you to ensure
that all occupants are wearing their seat
belts.
If the driver has not fastened his seat belt,
the < seat belt warning lamp lights up
if the doors are closed and the engine is
running. In addition, an intermitten tsignal
sounds from a speed of 25 km /hupwards.
The intermittent signal ceases:
! as soon as the driver has fastened his
seat belt
! after a maximum of 93 seconds
! when the vehicle is stationary
The < seat belt warning lamp only goes
out once the driver has fastened his seat
belt. !
Children less than 1.50 m tall and
yo un ger than 12 years ofage cannot
wear the seat belts properly. Always
secure these children in suitable child
re straint systems on seats designe dfor
this purpose ( =pag e62). Please follow
the manufacturer's installation instruc-
tions when installing child restraint sys-
tems.
! Do not secure any objects with a seat
belt if it is also being used by one of the
vehicle 'soccupan ts. G
Risk ofinjury The seat belt only prov
ides its intended
degree of protection if the seat backrest is
positioned as close to the vertical as possi-
ble, allowing th eoccupant to sit upright.
Avoid sea tpositions which do not allow the
seat belt to be routed correctly ( =
pag e25).
Therefore, po sition the bac kres ts as close to
the vertical as possible. Never drive with the
backrest inclined too far backwards. G
Risk of injury Airbags are de
signed not to be triggered in
al lac cident situations, since aco rrectly fas-
tened seat belt will often besufficient for
providing an effective degree of protection.
Airbags are not a substitute for seat belts.
To reduce the risk of severe or eve nfatal
in jury, make sure that all occupants – in par-
ticular, pregnant women – always wear their
seat be lts correctly, are seated inan upright
positio nand have their seats positio ned
almost vertic ally ( =
