GENERAL INFORMATION
METRIC CONVERSIONS
METRIC CONVERSIONS
Metric conversions are making life more difficult for the
mechanic. In addition to doubling the number of tools required,
metric-dimensioned nuts and bolts are used alongside English
components in many new vehicles. The mechanic has to decide which tool
to use, slowing down the job. The tool problem can be solved by trial
and error, but some metric conversions aren't so simple. Converting
temperature, lengths or volumes requires a calculator and conversion
charts, or else a very nimble mind. Conversion charts are only part of
the answer though, because they don't help you "think" metric, or
"visualize" what you are converting. The following examples are
intended to help you "see" metric sizes:
LENGTH
Meters are the standard unit of length in the metric system.
The smaller units are 10ths (decimeter), 100ths (centimeter), and
1000ths (millimeter) of a meter. These common examples might help you
to visualize the metric units:
* A meter is slightly longer than a yard (about 40 inches).
* An aspirin tablet is about one centimeter across (.4 inches).
* A millimeter is about the thickness of a dime.
VOLUME
Cubic meters and centimeters are used to measure volume, just
as we normally think of cubic feet and inches. Liquid volume
measurements include the liter and milliliter, like the English quarts
or ounces.
* One teaspoon is about 4 cubic centimeters.
* A liter is about one quart.
* A liter is about 61 cubic inches.
WEIGHT
The metric weight system is based on the gram, with the most
common unit being the kilogram (1000 grams). Our comparable units are
ounces and pounds:
* A kilogram is about 2.2 pounds.
* An ounce is about 28 grams.
TORQUE
Torque is somewhat complicated. The term describes the amount
of effort exerted to turn something. A chosen unit of weight or force
is applied to a lever of standard length. The resulting leverage is
called torque. In our standard system, we use the weight of one pound
applied to a lever a foot long, resulting in the unit called a foot-
pound. A smaller unit is the inch-pound (the lever is one inch long).
Metric units include the meter kilogram (lever one meter long
with a kilogram of weight applied) and the Newton-meter (lever one

INTRODUCTION
Removal, overhaul and installation procedures are covered in
this article. If component removal and installation is primarily an
unbolt and bolt-on procedure, only a torque specification may be
furnished.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The following illustrations are provided to assist in
locating components for which removal and installation procedures may
not be provided. See Figs. 1-12.

DISTRIBUTOR
NOTE: Eclipse, Mirage 1.8L, Montero, Montero Sport 3.0L and 3000GT
DOHC use Distributorless Ignition System (DIS). All other
models use distributor type ignition systems with
non-serviceable distributors on which only the rotor and
distributor cap can be changed.
FUEL SYSTEM
* PLEASE READ THIS FIRST *
WARNING: Always relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel
injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact
engine or electrical components.
FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE
Relieving Fuel Pressure
1) On Diamante, disconnect fuel pump harness connector at
fuel tank from underneath vehicle. On Montero and Montero Sport,
remove cargo compartment carpet, remove access plate and disconnect
fuel pump harness connector. On all other models, remove rear seat
cushion and remove access plate (if required) to disconnect fuel pump
harness connector.
2) On all models, start engine. Let engine run until it
stops. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Connect
fuel pump harness connector. Reinstall rear seat (if necessary.)
FUEL PUMP
Removal & Installation (Diamante, Eclipse, Galant & Montero)
1) Fuel pump assembly is located inside fuel tank. Release
fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Remove access panel
under seat, in trunk or in rear cargo area. Disconnect electrical
connectors and fuel hoses at fuel tank.
2) Remove fuel filler hose from fuel tank. Remove fuel pump
assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts to
specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Removal & Installation (Mirage, Montero Sport & 3000GT)
1) Fuel pump assembly is located inside fuel tank. Release
fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Raise vehicle on
hoist. Drain fuel into suitable container. Disconnect electrical
connectors and breather/fuel hoses at fuel tank.
2) Remove fuel filler hose from fuel tank. Support fuel tank
with transmission jack. Remove nuts securing fuel tank. Remove fuel
tank from vehicle. Remove fuel pump assembly. To install, reverse
removal procedure. Tighten nuts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
FUEL RAILS & INJECTORS
WARNING: Use a rag to cover fuel hose connection before disconnecting
high pressure fuel hose at fuel rail. Some residual fuel
pressure may still be in system.
CAUTION: DO NOT drop injectors while removing or installing fuel rail.

1) Front HO2S is mounted in exhaust pipe below exhaust
header. Rear HO2S is mounted behind catalytic converter. HO2S is
equipped with a permanent pigtail which must be protected from damage
when HO2S is removed. Ensure HO2S is free of contaminants. Avoid using
cleaning solvents of any type.
2) HO2S may be difficult to remove when engine temperature is
less than 120
F (48C). If using original sensor, always use anti-
seize compound on threads before installation. New sensor threads are
precoated with anti-seize. Tighten HO2S to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
THROTTLE BODY
Removal
1) Relieve fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE.
Drain enough coolant to ensure coolant level is below throttle body.
Disconnect air intake hose.
2) Remove accelerator, cruise control and A/T throttle valve
cables (if equipped). Disconnect fuel vapor hose, electrical harness
connector, vacuum hose and coolant hoses. Remove throttle body
retaining bolts.
Disassembly
Remove throttle position sensor. Remove idle air control
motor. Remove throttle bracket and connector bracket (if equipped).
Remove idle position switch and adjusting nut (if equipped).
CAUTION: DO NOT remove throttle valve. DO NOT use cleaning solvents
on throttle position sensor, idle air control motor or idle
position switch.
Cleaning
1) Clean all parts except throttle position sensor, idle air
control motor and idle position switch in solvent.
WARNING: Safety glasses MUST be worn whenever compressed air is used
for parts cleaning.
2) Check vacuum port and passage for clogging. Clean vacuum,
vapor and fuel passages using compressed air.
Reassembly
To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure.
THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR
Removal & Installation
Throttle Position (TP) sensor is located on throttle body.
Disconnect TP sensor electrical connector. Remove TP sensor screws and
TP sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten TP sensor
screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. For TP sensor
adjustment procedure, see D - ADJUSTMENTS article.
TURBOCHARGERS
Removal (Eclipse)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain engine coolant
and oil. On models equipped with A/C, remove condenser fan motor
assembly. Remove front heated oxygen sensor. Remove oil dipstick guide
and "O" ring.

2) Disconnect air intake hose and vacuum hoses. Remove air
hose and air outlet housing. Remove heat protectors. Disconnect
exhaust pipe. Remove power steering oil pump and bracket. Remove
engine hanger bracket. Disconnect oil inlet pipe.
3) Disconnect engine coolant hoses and tubes from
turbocharger. Remove exhaust manifold nuts and bolts. Remove exhaust
manifold and gaskets. Disconnect oil pressure and return pipes. Remove
turbocharger and exhaust manifold assembly. Separate turbocharger from
exhaust manifold.
Removal (3000GT - Front)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain engine oil and
coolant. Remove radiator. Disconnect exhaust pipe. Remove air intake
hose, air hoses and air pipe. Remove generator and belt. Remove oil
dipstick guide.
2) Remove heat protector. Disconnect front heated oxygen
sensor connector. Remove oil return pipe. Remove turbocharger support
bracket, and remove turbocharger from exhaust manifold.
Removal (3000GT - Rear)
1) Disconnect battery cables, and remove battery. Drain
engine oil and cooling system. Remove accelerator cable. Remove air
hose, air pipe and heat protectors. Disconnect clutch booster vacuum
hose. Remove air intake hoses and EGR pipe. Disconnect heated oxygen
sensor connectors.
2) Remove oil pipe and EGR valve. Disconnect exhaust fitting,
and remove rear heat protector. Remove oil return pipe. Remove
turbocharger assembly.
Inspection (All Models)
Check turbine and compressor wheels for cracking and other
damage. Ensure turbine and compressor wheels turn smoothly. Check for
oil leakage from turbocharger assembly. Check for proper wastegate
valve operation. See I - SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article.
CAUTION: Apply light coat of oil to inner surface of flared area on
water pipe (flare nut fitting) before connecting to engine.
Installation (All Models)
1) To install, reverse removal procedure. Before oil pipe
flare nut (above turbocharger) is installed, pour clean engine oil
into turbocharger oil pipe installation hole. Ensure oil and air hoses
are properly installed and securely clamped.
2) Use NEW gaskets. Adjust accelerator cable (if necessary).\
Refill engine oil and coolant. Check for oil and coolant leaks.
Tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.

Removal & Installation (Eclipse)
Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
Remove horn pad and steering wheel. Remove hood lock release handle.
Remove column pad and upper and lower column covers. See Fig. 6.
Remove A/C-heater system lap cooler duct and foot shower duct. Remove
steering column switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Galant)
Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
Remove steering wheel. Remove column pad. Remove foot duct. Remove
upper and lower steering column covers. See Fig. 11. Remove steering
column switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Mirage)
Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
Remove steering wheel. Remove hood release handle. Remove knee
protector. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. See Fig. 15.
Remove steering column switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Montero)
Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
Remove steering wheel. Remove foot duct. Remove lower instrument panel
cover. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. See Fig. 19.
Remove steering column switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (Montero Sport)
Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
Remove steering wheel. Remove instrument panel lower cover. Remove
upper and lower steering column covers. See Fig. 25. Remove steering
column switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (3000GT)
Remove air bag module. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
Remove steering wheel. Remove knee protector. Remove upper and lower
steering column covers. Remove A/C-heater system lap cooler duct and
foot duct. Remove left or right steering column switch. See Fig. 31.
To install, reverse removal procedure.

deploys.
* After air bag deploys, air bag surface may contain deposits
of sodium hydroxide, which irritate skin. Always wear safety
glasses, rubber gloves and long-sleeved shirt during clean
up. Wash hands using mild soap and water. Follow correct
clean-up and disposal procedures.
* Because of critical system operating requirements, DO NOT
service any SRS components. Repairs are only made by
replacing defective part(s).
* DO NOT allow any electrical source near inflator on the back
of air bag module.
* When carrying live air bag module, trim cover should be
pointed away from body to minimize injury in case of
accidental air bag deployment.
* If SRS is not fully functional for any reason, DO NOT drive
vehicle until system is repaired and is fully functional. DO
NOT remove bulbs, modules, sensors or other components, or in
any way disable system from operating normally. If SRS is not
functional, park vehicle until repairs are made.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
STEERING WHEEL
WARNING: Wait at least 60 seconds after disconnecting negative
battery cable before servicing SRS. System reserve capacitor
maintains SRS voltage for about 60 seconds after battery is
disconnected. Servicing SRS before 60-second period may
cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal
injury.
Removal
Disable air bag. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
Ensure steering wheel is straight ahead. Remove air bag. Place
reference mark on steering wheel and steering column shaft for
installation reference. Remove steering wheel nut and washer. Using
steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel.
CAUTION: DO NOT hammer on steering wheel during removal or
installation, as it may damage steering column.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure reference marks
are aligned. Tighten fasteners to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING
AIR BAG SYSTEM.
COMBINATION SWITCH
CAUTION: When installing steering wheel, if rotating part of
clockspring is not properly centered with steering column
and front wheels, clockspring failure will result.
Removal & Installation
Remove lower instrument cover and lower heater duct. Remove
air bag and steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL under
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . Remove upper and lower steering column covers.
Disconnect clockspring electrical connector. Remove screws attaching
colckspring and remove clockspring. Disconnect combination switch
electrical connectors. Remove screws and combination switch. To
install, reverse removal procedure.
