This Supplemental RestraintSystem(SRS)
section contains important information concern-
ing the following systems:
. Driver andpassenger supplemental front-
impact airbag (NISSAN Advanced AirBag
System)
. Front seat-mounted side-impactsupple-
mental airbag
. Roof-mounted curtainside-impact supple-
mental airbag
. Seat beltwith pretensioner
Supplemental front-impactairbag system:
The NISSAN Advanced AirBag System can
help cushion theimpact forcetothe head and
chest ofthe driver andfront passenger incertain
frontal collisions.
Front seat-mounted side-impactsupple-
mental airbag system: Thissystem canhelp
cushion theimpact forcetothe chest andpelvic
area ofthe driver andfront passenger incertain
side impact collisions. Theside airbag is
designed toinflate onthe side where thevehicle
is impacted.
Roof-mounted curtainside-impact supple-
mental airbag system: Thissystem canhelp
cushion theimpact forcetothe head ofoccupants
infront andrear outboard seating
positions incertain sideimpact collisions. The
curtain airbags aredesigned toinflate onthe
side where thevehicle isimpacted.
These supplemental restraintsystems arede-
signed tosupplement thecrash protection
provided bythe driver andpassenger seatbelts
and arenot asubstitute forthem. Seatbelts
should always becorrectly wornandthe
occupant seatedasuitable distance awayfrom
the steering wheel,instrument panelanddoor
finishers. (SeeªSeat beltsº (P.1-10) forinstruc-
tions andprecautions onseat beltusage.)
The supplemental airbags operate only
when theignition switchisin the ON
position.
After theignition isplaced inthe ON
position, thesupplemental airbag warning
light illuminates. Thesupplemental airbag
warning lightwillturn offafter about 7
seconds ifthe systems areoperational.

. The seat belts, theside airbags and
curtain airbags aremost effective
when youaresitting wellback and
upright inthe seat. Theside airbag
and curtain airbag inflate withgreat
force. Donot allow anyone toplace
their hand, legorface near theside
air bag onthe side ofthe seatback
of the front seatornear theside
roof rails. Donot allow anyone
sitting inthe front seats orrear
outboard seatstoextend theirhand
out ofthe window orlean against
the door. Some examples ofdan-
gerous ridingpositions areshown
in the previous illustrations.
. When sitting inthe rear seat, donot
hold onto theseatback ofthe front
seat. Ifthe side airbag inflates, you
may beseriously injured.Beespe-
cially careful withchildren, who
should always beproperly re-
strained. Someexamples ofdanger-
ous riding positions areshown in
the illustrations.
. Do not use seat covers onthe front
seatbacks. Theymayinterfere with
side airbag inflation.

The side airbags arelocated inthe outside of
the seatback ofthe front seats. Thecurtain air
bags arelocated inthe side roofrails. Allofthe
information, cautionsandwarnings inthis
manual applyandmust befollowed. The
side airbags andcurtain airbags aredesigned
to inflate inhigher severity sidecollisions,
although theymayinflate ifthe forces inanother
type ofcollision aresimilar tothose ofahigher
severity sideimpact. Theyaredesigned toinflate on
the side where thevehicle isimpacted. They
may notinflate incertain sidecollisions.
V ehicle damage (orlack ofit) isnot always an
indication ofproper sideairbag andcurtain air
bag operation.
When theside airbags andcurtain airbags
inflate, afairly loudnoise maybeheard, followed
by release ofsmoke. Thissmoke isnot harmful
and does notindicate afire. Care should be
taken nottoinhale it,as itmay cause irritation
and choking. Thosewithahistory ofabreathing
condition shouldgetfresh airpromptly .
Side airbags, along withtheuse ofseat belts,
help tocushion theimpact forceonthe chest
and pelvic areaofthe front occupants. Curtain
air bags helptocushion theimpact forcetothe
head ofoccupants inthe front andrear outboard
seating positions. Theycanhelp save livesand
reduce serious injuries. However, aninflating
side airbag orcurtain airbag may cause
abrasions orother injuries. Sideairbags and
curtain airbags donot provide restraint tothe
lower body.
The seat belts should becorrectly wornandthe
driver andpassenger seatedupright asfar as
practical awayfromtheside airbags. Rearseat
passengers shouldbeseated asfar away as
practical fromthedoor finishers andside roof
rails. Theside airbags andcurtain airbags
