Steering lock1
)
The steering locks when you turn the engine
off using the
I START ENGINE STOPI* button,
move the selector lever into the P position
and open the driver's door.
The locked steering helps prevent vehicle
theft.
Emergency off function
If it is absolutely necessary, the engine can al­
so be turned off while driving at speeds lower
than 6 mph (10 km/h).
If you press the
I START ENGINE STOPI* button while driving,
the message
Pressing start/stop button
again will switch off engine!
appears. To
switch the engine off, press the
I STAR T ENGINE STO PI* button twice in a row
briefly or press and hold for longer than two
seconds.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a complete stop. The
full function of the brake booster and the power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake, if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to accidents and serious injuries .
- Please note that the brake booster and
power steering only work when the en­
gine is running. When the engine off, you
must use more force to steer or brake
the vehicle. Because the usual steering and braking capability is not available,
the risk of accidents or injuries increases.
- Always take the vehicle key with you when leaving the vehicle, even for a
short period of time. This applies partic­ ularly when children remain in the vehi­
cle. Otherwise the children could start
the engine or operate electrical equip­
ment such as power windows.
- For safety reasons, always park the vehi­
cle with the selector lever in the P posi-

tion. Otherwise, there is the risk that the
vehicle could roll.
- After the engine has been switched off,
the radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes - even with the ignition
switched off. It can also switch on again
after some time if the coolant tempera­
ture rises as a result of heat buildup or if
the engine compartment is heated by sunlight and the engine is hot.
(D Note
If the engine has been under heavy load
for an extended period of time, heat builds
up in the engine compartment after the
engine is switched off - there is a risk of
damaging the engine. For this reason, let
the engine run for at idle for approximate­
ly two minutes before shutting it off.
Starting the engine if there is a
malfunction
Applies to vehicles: with convenience key
It may not be possible to start the engine un­
der certain circumstances, for example if the
battery in the vehicle key is drained, if inter­
ference is affected the key or if there is a sys­
tem malfunction.

Operating
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Your veh icle is eq uipped with an electrome­
chanical parking brake. The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
I n addition to the normal functions of a tradi­
tional hand brake, the electromechanical parking brake provides various convenience
and safety functions.
When starting from a stop
- T he integral hill start assist helps you when
dr iving by automatically releasing the park­
ing brake ~

-When starting on inclines, the hill start as­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
l y rolling back. The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until sufficient driving force has been built up at the
wheels.
Emergency brake function
An emergency braking functions ensu res that
the vehicle can be slowed down even if the
normal brakes fail~ page 84, Emergency
braking function.
_.&. WARNING
- Do not press the accelerator pedal inad­
vertently when the vehicle is stationary
and the engine is running and a gear is
selected. Otherwise the vehicle will start
to move immediately and could result in
a crash .
- If the power supply fails, the released
parking brake can no longer engage . In
this case, park the vehicle on leve l
g round and secure it by placing these­
lecto r lever in the P position. See an au­
thorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi
Service Facility for assistance.

Starting from a stop
The start assist function ensures that the
parking brake is released automatically upon starting .
Stopping and setting the parking brake

Sta rting and automatically rel easi ng the

Req uirement: The dr iver's door must be
locked and the driver's safety belt must be
fastened.
"' When you press the accelerator peda l, the
parking brake is automatically re leased and
your vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping in city traff ic, the parking brake can be ap­
plied . The vehicle does not have to be held
with the brake pedal. The parking brake elimi­ nates the tendency to creep when a selector
lever pos it io n is engaged. As soon as you
press the accelerato r peda l, the par king b rake
r eleases a utomat ica lly and the vehicle starts
to move.
Starting on slopes
When sta rting on incl ines, the hill start assist
prevents the vehicle from un intent ionally roll­
i ng ba ck. The bra kin g fo rce of the par kin g
brake is not re leased unt il su ff ic ient d riving
f o rce has been built up a t the wheels.

Fo r safety reaso ns, t he pa rking bra ke is re­
l eased automatic ally o nly when the d riv­
er's safety bel t is fa stened an d the driver's

Emergency braking function
This is used if the conventional brake system
fails or locks up.

cele rate, the braking p rocess stops.
Pulling and holding the @switch while driv­
in g at a speed of about 2 mph (3 km/h) or
h igher in itiates the emergency b rak ing func­
tion . The vehi cle is braked at all fou r whee ls
by activat ing the brak ing hydrau lics. The brake
performance is s imilar to heavy bra ki ng. ¢.&.
To help prevent act ivat ing the emergency
b rak ing by mis take, an audib le wa rning tone
(b uzzer) sounds when the @switch is pulled.
E me rgency braking s tops as soo n as the @
switch is released or the accelerator peda l is
p ressed.
&_ WARNING
Emergency braking shou ld only be used in
an emergency, when the normal brake
pedal has failed or the brake pedal is ob­
structed . Du ring emergency braking, your
vehicle will brake similar to heavy braking.
ESC and the assoc iated components (ABS,
ASR, EDL) cannot overcome the laws of
physics. In corners and w hen road or
weather conditions are bad, a full brake
application can cause the vehicle to skid or
the rear end to b reak away, which increas­
es the risk of an acc ident.
Hill hold
Applies to vehicles: with H ill Hold
Hill hold makes it easier to start on hills .
Requirement: The driver door must be closed
and the engine must be r unning .
The system is act iva ted when the brake pedal
i s pressed wh ile the veh icle is s ta tionary .
To prevent the vehicle from ro ll ing back when
start ing , the bra ke power is he ld for a br ief moment afte
r releasing the brake pedal. D ur­
ing t his time, you can easi ly begin to move
you r vehicle .
A WARNING
"---
-The intelligent technology of Hi ll Hold
cannot overcome the limitations im­ posed by natural physical laws . The in­
creased comfort offered by H ill Hold
should not cause you to take safety r is ks.
- Hill Hold cannot hold the vehicle in all
h ill sta rt situations (fo r example, if the
g round is slippery o r icy).
- If you do not beg in moving immediately
after releasing the brake pedal, the vehi­
cle could begi n to roll ba ckward unde r
certain ci rc u ms tances. Press the brake
pedal or set the pa rk ing brake immedi­
ately.
- If the eng ine "stalls", press the b ra ke
pedal or set the pa rking brake immedi ­
ately.
- Starting on inclines in stop-and-go t ra f­
fic: To help prevent the vehicle from ro ll­
in g back when starting, press and ho ld
the brake pedal fo r several seconds when
the vehicle is stationary.

You can find o ut if yo ur vehicle is equ ipped
with Hill Hold by checking at an a uthorized
A udi dealer or qualified repair facility.
Speed warning system
Introduction
The speed warning system helps you to stay
under a specified maximum speed .
The speed warning system war ns you if you
are exceeding the maximum speed that you
have set . You will hear a warning tone when
yo ur speed exceeds the stored value by ap­
proximate ly 3 mph (3 km/h). The . (U SA
models)/ . (Canada models) ind icator light
and the message
Speed limit e xceeded! ap­
pear in the instrument cluster display at the
same time. The./. indicator light turns ..,.

off when the speed decreases below the stor­
ed maximum speed.
Setting a thresho ld is recommended if yo u
wo uld like to be reminded when you reach a
certain maximum speed . Situations where you
may want to do so include d riving in a country
with a general speed limit or if there is a
specified max imum speed for winter tires.
@ Tips
Regard less of the speed warning system,
you shou ld always mon itor your speed us­
ing the speedometer and make sure you
are following the legal speed limit.
Setting the threshold
You con set, change and delete the threshold
in the MMI.
• Se lect : the

control button > Driv er assist an ce > Speed
w arning .
You can set any thresho ld between 20 mph
(30 km/h) and 150 mph (240 km/h). Settings
can each be adjusted in increments of 6 mph
(10 km/h).
Cruise control system
Description
Appl ies to vehicles : with cruise con trol system
The c ruise control system makes i t possible to
d rive at a constant speed starting at lS mph
(20 km/h).
The speed is kept constant by modify ing en­
g ine power or through an a ct ive brake in ter ­
vention.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic
around you when the cruise control is in
operation. You are always responsible for
your speed and the distance between
your vehicle and other vehicles.
- For reasons of safety, cruise contro l
should not be used in the c ity, in stop-

and-go traffic, on winding roads and
when road cond itions are poor (such as
ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydro­
plan ing) -you could have an accident.
- Switch the cruise control off temporarily
when dr iv ing in turning lanes, h ighway
e xits or in construction zones.
- Please note that unconsc iously "resting"
your foot on the accelerator pedal p re­
vents t he cr uise control from b raking.
This is due to the control system be ing
over ridden by the dr iver's acceleration .
- If the re is a brake system malfunct ion
such as overheating when the spee d
warn ing system is switched on, the bra k­
ing f unction in the system w il l be deac ti­
vated . The remaining speed warning sys ­
tem fu nctions will remain active, as long
as the

- T he cr uise control system is ideal fo r
st retches wit h speed limits. The driver is
responsib le for adhering to the correct
speed.
- The cr uise control remains act ive when
shift ing gears.

Changing speed

the des ired speed is reached .
Overriding the speed
You can press the acce lerator pedal down to
increase your speed, for example if you want
to pass someone . The speed you saved earlier
will resume as soon as you release the acceler­
ator pedal.
I f, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5
mph (10 km/h) for longer than 6 minutes, the
cruise contro l turns off temporari ly. The

light in the instrument cluster turns off and
the stored speed is retained.
Preselecting the speed
Applies to vehicles: with cruise control system
You can preselect your desired speed when
the vehicle is stationary.
• Switch the ignition on.
• Pull the lever into position

• To increase or decrease the speed, tap the
lever in the
0 10 d irect io n.
This funct ion makes it possible, for example,
to save the speed you want before driving on
the highway . Once on the highway, activate
the cruise contro l by pull ing the lever towa rd

Switching off

Temporary deactivat ion
• Press the brake pedal, or
• Press the leve r into position @(not clicked
into p lace)

The speed you stored will be retained if the
c ruise control has been switched off tempora­
rily . To resume the stored speed, re lease the

The stored speed is erased when the cruise
control is sw itched off complete ly or the igni­
t ion is switched off .

You should only resume the stored speed if
i t is not too high for ex isting traffic con di­
tions . Othe rwise you r is k an acc ident.

- If the bra kes become too heated whi le
dr iving, t he cr uise control sw itches off. If
t his happens w hile d riving downhill, you
can relieve t he b rakes by shifting into a
lower gear.
- W hen the cruise cont rol is activa ted, E SC

Audi adaptive cruise control
Introduction
App lies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise control
The adaptive cruise control system is a com bi·
nation of speed and distance regulation. It as ­
sists the dr iver by both regulat ing the speed
and maintain ing a distance to the object
ahead, within the abilities of the system. If
the system detects an object, adaptive cru ise
control can brake and acce le rate your ve hicle.
This makes driving more comfortable both on l ong stretches of highway and in stop-and -go
traffic.
General Information
General information

The radar se nsor a rea c::>fig. 84 must not be
covered w it h stickers, deposits or any other
obstructions as it may impair the function of
the adaptive cruise contro l and the pre sense
front. For information on cleaning, refer to

c::> page 204. The same applies for any modifi­
cations made in the front area.
The function of the adaptive c ruise control
system and pre sense front is lim ited in some
conditions :

- Objects can only be detected when they are
within the sensor range

-The system has a limited ability to detect
objects that are a short d istance ahead, off
to the side of your vehicle or moving into
your lane.
- Objects that are difficult to detect such as
motorcycles, veh icles with high ground
clearance or an overhanging load are detect­
ed late or not detected at all.
- When driving through curves

A WARNING
Always pay attent ion to traffic when adap­
tive cruise control is switched on and the
pre sense front is active

front i s used to ass ist yo u. The dr iver must
al ways take ac tion to avo id a col lision . The
driver is always responsible for braking at
the correct time .
- I ncorrect use of the a daptive cr uise con ­
trol can cause collisions, ot her accidents
an d serio us pe rsonal inj ury .
- For safety reasons, do not use adaptive
cru ise contro l when driv ing o n roads with
many curves, when the road s urface is in
poor condition and/or in bad weather
(such as ice, fog, grave l, heavy ra in and
hydroplaning). Using the system unde r
these co ndit ions co uld res ult in a coll i­
sion.
- Sw itch adaptive cru ise cont ro l off tempo·
ra rily whe n driving in tu rni ng lanes, o n
expressway ex its or in construction
zones. T his preven ts the vehicle from ac ­
celerating to the se t speed when in t hese
situations .
- Th e adap tive cruise control system
will
not brake by i tsel f if you pu t your foo t on
the accelera to r pedal. Do ing so can ove r-
ride t he speed and distance reg ulat io n.

accelerates automatically.

•- The automatic braking is not enough to
maintain a sufficient distance to an object

If adaptive cruise control is not shown in the
instrument cluster disp lay, you can call it up
using the mu ltifunction steering wheel but­
tons

Based on the graphics in the disp lay, yo u can
determine if the system is maintaining a dis ­
tance to a vehicle ahead and what that dis­
tance to this vehicle is:
No vehicle -No object ahead was detected .
White vehicle -An object ahead was detected.
Red vehicle -Request for the driver to take ac­
tion

Both arrows on the scale© indicate the dis­
tance to the object ahead. No arrow appears
when the vehicle is on an open road and there
is no object ahead.
If an object is detected
ahead, the arrow moves on the scale .
The green zone on the scale indicates the
store distance. For information on changing the d
istance, refer to
i=;, page 92. If the dis­
tance selected is exceeded or not reached, the
arrow moves into the red zone on the scale.
A WARNING
- Using adaptive cru ise control incorrectly
can cause collisions, other accidents and
serious injuries.
- If you press the
~IS-ET~I button when driv­
ing at speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h),
the vehicle accele rates automatically up
to 20 mph (30 km/h), which is the mini­
mum speed that can be set.
(D Tips
-If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control system off, the set speed
is erased for safety reason.
- The Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC)
and Anti-Slip Regulat ion (ASR) both
switch on when the adaptive cruise con­
trol is switched on. ESC and ASR cannot
be switched
off when adaptive cruise
contro l is switched on.
- With the adaptive cruise control activat­
ed the ESC sport mode canno t be activat­
ed.

The adaptive cruise control system assists you
in stop-and-go traffic. If an object that is de­
tected ahead stops, your vehicle will brake
and stay at a stop, within the limits of the sys­
tem.

The adaptive c ruise co ntrol switches off for
safety reasons when stationary:
- when the dr iver's door is open,
- when the vehicle is stationary fo r more than
3 m inutes,
- when the dr iver's safety belt is not fastened .
A WARNING
If the message ACC autom. go1l appears,
the vehicle continues dr iving, even if there
is an obstacle between your veh icle and
the object ahead . This increases the risk of
an accident.

- If an obstacle is detected when driving

ing more slowly. This can also happen in

Setting the distance

• To increase or reduce the distance in incre­
ments, tap the switch again to the right or
left . The distance between the two vehicles
will change in the instrument cluster dis­
play.
When approaching an object detected ahead,
the adaptive cruise con trol system brakes to
match that object's speed and then reg ulates
to the stored distance . If the object detected
ahead acce lerates, adapt ive cruise control will
a lso acce lerate up to the stored speed .
The highe r the speed, the greater the distance
