tor light sti ll turns on, turn the eng ine off and
do not continue driving. See an authorized Audi
dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility for as­
sistance.
The oil pressure warning is not an oi l level in­
dicator. Always check the oil level regu larly.
0 Alternator/battery
• Alternator fault: battery is not being charg­
ed
There is a malfunction in the alternator or the ve­
hicle electrical system .
Drive to an authorized Aud i dea ler o r authorized
Audi Servic e Facility immediately. Turn off all un­
necessary electrical equipment because it wi ll
drain the battery. See your authorized A udi deal ­
er or authori zed Audi Service Facility if the bat­
tery charge level is too low.
(•) Low battery charge : Battery will be charged
while driving
The start ing ability may be impaired .
I f th is message turns off after a little while , the
battery charged enough while d riving.
If the message does not turn off, have and au­
thor ized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service
Faci lity repair the malfunction .
~/ !{' Safety systems
The II (USA models) Im (Canada mode ls) indi­
cato r light monitors the safety systems.
Safety system
If the II (USA models) Im (Canada models) in­
d icator light turns on or blinks, there is a mal­
function in a safety system.
Instruments and indicator lights
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility immediate ly to have the
malfunction corrected.
A WARNING ~ -
Have the safety systems inspected immedi­
ately. Otherwise, there is a r isk that the sys­
tems may not activate during a collision,
which increases the risk of serious injury or
death .
4'-Front safety belt
The . indicator light stays on until the dr iver's
and front passenge r's safety belts are buckled.
Above a certa in speed , there will also be a warn­
ing tone .

@-e Steering lock
• Do not drive vehicle: steering defective
There is a malf u nction in the electron ic steering
lock. You cannot turn the ignition on.
Do
not tow your vehicle because it cannot be
steered . See an authorized Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facility for assistance.
!II Steering lock: system fault! Please contact
Service
There is a malfunction in the electron ic steering
lock.
Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or authorized
Audi Service Facility immediate ly to have the
malfunction corrected.
A WARNING ~ -Do not tow your vehicle when there is a mal­
function in the electronic steering lock -this
in creases the risk of an acc ident.

Power top
-Be careful when installing so you do not
pinch your fingers.
- Pay attention to the traffic when installing
the wind def lector. Install the w ind deflec­
tor from the s ide of the vehicle that is away
from traffic.
(D Note
Do not lean against the veh icle when instal­
ling the wind deflector. Hard objects and dec­
orations on clothing such as belt buckles can
scratch the pa int.
{!) Tips
- The wind deflector works best when a ll of
the w indows are rolled up wh ile driving.
- Only store the wind deflector in the storage
bag* when it is dry.
Power top emergency
operation
General information
The power top con be closed manually if there is
o malfunction.
• Set the parking brake.
• Open all windows.
• Switch the ignition off.
• Pull the button@ for approximately 10 to
15 seconds to reduce th e pressure in the power
top hydraulics ¢
page 36, fig. 25.
Only close the power top m anually in an eme r­
gency . Have a second person assist . Drive to an
author ized Audi dealer or author ized Audi Service
Facility immediately to have the malfunction cor­
rected.
A WARNING
- There is a r isk of pinching the hands or othe r
people during all of the power top emergen­
cy operat ion steps.
- Make sure a ll windows are lowered during
emergency ope ration.
- Do not reach into the power top suppor ts
or other moving components .

-Never drive when the power top is not
locked correct ly. The wind from driving
could cause the power top to open. This can
result in injur ies and damage to the vehicle .
{!) Tips
The power top storage compartment cover is
not latched after the emergency operation is
complete. Dr ive to an authorized Audi dealer

l y to have the malfu nction corrected.

belts and airbag system, which increases

- To reduce the risk of injury during sudden
braking or in a coll is ion, the driver and front
passenger should not have their backrests in
the reclined position whi le dr iving or riding.
The safety be lts and airbag system can pro­
vide the greatest protection possib le when
the backrests a re in the up right posit ion and
the safety belts are worn correctly. The
more a backrest is reclined, the greater the
risk of injury due to an incorrect seating po ­
sition and safety belt position.

- The power adjustment for the front seats al­
so works wit h the ignition switched off or
with the ignition key removed. For this rea­
son, children shou ld never be left unattend­
ed in the veh icle - they could be injured!
- Exercise caution when adjusting the seat height. Unsuperv ised or careless seat ad­
justment can p inch f ingers or hands causing
injuries.
- The front seat backrests must not be re­

Front center armrest
Applies to vehicles with a front center armrest
The center armrest can be adjusted to several
levels.

"To bring the armrest back down, raise it out of
the top notch and fold it back down. Then lift
the armrest to the desired position, if necessa­
ry.
The armrest can slide forward and back.
There is a storage compartment under the arm­
rest.
Head restraints
Front head restraints
Applies to: vehicles with ad justab le head restra ints

head restraint is integrated in the backrest and is
therefore not adjustable
Adjust the head restraints so the upper edge is as
even as possible with the top of your head. If that

combination of safety equipment.

make sure there are no people or animals
within its range of motion . The backrest will
fold forwa rd automatically after it is re­
leased .
- The backrest must be securely latched so
objects cannot slide forward out of the lug­
gage compa rtment dur ing sudden bra king.
- Always make sure the back rest is la tched
completely by pulling forward on it.
- Make sure the safety be lt is not ca ught in
t he door h inges o r the seat fitt ings and
damaged.
- Torn or frayed safety belts can break , and
bel t anchors can break d uring a co llision .
C heck the safety bel ts regularly . Safe ty
bel ts wit h noti ce a ble damage to the web­
bing, bindings, buckles or retractors mus t
be rep laced .

Stor ing cargo correctly .
A WARNING ~ -
Weak, damaged or fau lty straps used to se­
cure objects to t he tie-downs can fail dur ing
heavy braking or a collision and lead to seri­
ous injur ies.
- Always use suitable straps and secure ob­
jects to the tie-downs in the luggage com­
pa rtme nt to prevent objects from shifting
a nd slid ing forwa rd .
- Never secure a child seat restraint to a tie ­
down .
- Because of the ir load capacity, the hooks
should only be used to secure objects that
weigh a max imum of 10 lb (5 kg) . Heavy ob­
jects will not be secu red s ufficiently , and
this in creases the risk of in jury.

- Occasiona l noises when the parking brake is

cause for con cer n.
- When the vehicle is par ked, the park ing
b rake goes thro ugh a se lf-test cycle at reg u­
l a r int erva ls. A ny no is es asso ciated with th is
a re normal.
- If t here is a power fa ilure, the p arking bra ke
will not se t if i t is re le a se d, and it will not
r ele ase if it is set¢.&.. See an au thori zed
A udi dealer or au thorized A ud i Service Fa ­
cility for ass istance .
Parking
~ Press the brake pedal to stop the vehicle.
~ Pull the (D switch to set the park ing brake
¢ page 73, fig. 78 .
~ Place the selector lever in the P pos ition.
~ Turn the eng ine off ¢&_ .
~ Turn the steering whee l when pa rking on in­
clin es so that the whee ls will roll into the curb
if the ve hicle starts mov ing .
A WARNING
-Always take the vehicle key with you when
leaving the vehicle, even fo r a short period
of time. This applies particularly when chi l­
dren rema in in the veh icle . Otherwise ch il­
dren could start the engine, release the
par kin g brake or operate elect rical eq uip­
me nt such as powe r windows, which in­
c reases the ris k of an acc ident.
- When the vehicle is locked, no one -particu­
larly not children -sho uld rem ain i n the ve­
hicle. Loc ked doors ma ke it more diffic ult

cle, which puts lives at risk.
Starting from a stop
The start assist function ensures that the park ­
ing broke is released automatically upon start­
ing.
Stopping and sett ing the parking brake

Starting and automatically releasing the
parking brake
Require ment: the d river 's doo r mus t be closed
and the driver 's sa fe ty belt must be fastened.
~ When you press the acce lerato r pedal, the
parking bra ke is a utomat ica lly re leased and
your veh icle begi ns to move.
When stopp ing at a traff ic signa l or stopping in
c ity traff ic, the par king b rake can be applied . The
vehicle does no t have to be held wi th the brake
pedal. The par king bra ke elim inates the ten dency
to creep when a se lector lever posi tion is engag ­
ed. As soon as you p ress the accelerator pedal,
the parking brake releases a utomat ica lly and the
vehicle starts to move.
Starting on slopes
When star ting on in cli nes, the hill start assist
prevents the vehicle from unintentiona lly rolling
b ack . The b raking force of t he parking brake is
not re leased unti l sufficient dr iv ing force has
been built up at the wheels.
@ Tips
F o r safety reasons, the parking brake is re­
l eased a utomatica lly on ly when the driver 's
safety be lt is fastened and the driver's door is
l ocked.

Automatic transmission
stuck by "rocking" it. The selector lever lock en­
gages if the lever stays in the N position longer
than approximately 2 seconds when the brake
pedal is not pressed .
Interlock button
The interlock button in the selector lever handle
prevents you from moving the selector lever in­
advertently while in some se lector lever posi­
tions. The positions that require the lock button
to be pressed are marked in color in the illustra­
tion
c> fig. 80.
Ignition key safety interlock*
You can only remove the key from the ignition af­
ter switching the ignition off if the selector lever
is in the P position. The selector lever wi ll be
locked in the P position as long as the key is not
in the ignition .
A WARNING

-If the se lector lever does not engage, there
i s a malfunction . The eng ine is disabled to
prevent the vehicle from driving off unin­
tentiona lly . Press the brake pedal br iefly to
al low the selector lever lock to engage
again .
-If the vehicle does not move forward or in
r everse even though a drive position is se­
lected, proceed as follows:
- >If the vehicle does not move in the desired
direction, the system may not have engaged
the drive position correctly. Press the brake
pedal and select the drive position again.
-> If the vehicle st ill does not move in the de­
sired direction, there is a system malfunc­
tion. See an authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility for assistance
to have the system checked.

Applies to: vehicles with automatic transmissions
The transmission shifts up and down automati­
cally when in the driving gears.

The engine will only be able start when the selec­
tor lever is in the P or N pos itions . At low temper ­
atures (below 14 °F (-10 °()), the engine can only
be started when the selector lever is in the P po­
sition.
Starting from a stop
"' Press and hold the brake pedal.
"' Press and hold the interlock button in these­
lector lever handle, select the desired selector
lever position such as D
c> page 76 and release
the lock button.
"' Wait a moment until the transmission shifts.
You will notice a slight movement when the gear engages.
"' Release the brake pedal and press the accelera­
tor pedal

Stopping temporarily
"'Keep the vehicle stationary using the braking
pedal, for example at traffic lights .
"' Do not press the acce lerator pedal when doing
this.
"' To prevent the vehicle from rolling when you
start driving, set the parking brake when stop­
ping on steep incl ines

"'The parking brake will release automat ically
and the vehicle will start moving once you p ress
the acce lera tor pedal. Requirement: the driv­
er's doo r must be closed and the driver's safety
