Instruments and warning /indicator lights
Anti-lock brake system (ABS) -- (USA models) /:' (Canada models)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS and the
electronic differential lock (EDL).
T he warning/ind icator light will come on for a few seconds wh en the
ign it ion is sw itched on . The light w ill go out after an automatic check
sequence is completed .
There is a malfun ction in the ABS when:
• T he warning/ind icator light does not illuminate when you switch
on the ig nition.
• T he warn ing/ind icato r lig ht does not go o ut a fter a few seconds .
• The warning/ind icator light illuminates while dr iving.
The brake syst em will still re spond even without the a ssistan ce of
th e AB S s ystem . See your authori zed Audi d ealer as s oon as
possible t o restore full braking performance.

The ABS warning light and the brake warning light come on
together. The ABS will no t work and you will noti ce a change in
brak ing response and performance.
Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake wa rning light => page 17 and the ABS warning illuminate
together there may be a malfu nction in the ABS, and the re may also
be a malfunction in the b rake system itself =>

In the event of a malfunction in the brake system the wa rning/indi ­
cator light
BRAKE (USA models)/ ((D) (Canada models) in the instrument
cluster flashes . By pressing the
!SE T) button, you can bring up a
dr iver message w hic h explains the malfunct io n in more detail. Please

The EDL works toge ther with the ABS . The ABS warning light will
come on if there is a malfunction in the ED L system=>
page 242 . See
your authorized Audi dea ler as soon as possible.
& WARNING
• If the , ~ .... (USA model s)/ :J (Canada models) warning light
does not go out, or if it comes on while driving, the ABS s ystem is
not working properly . The vehicle can then be s topped only with
the standard brake s (w ithout ABS ). You will not have the p rotec­
tion ABS p ro vi des . Cont act your auth orized Audi dealer as s oon as
poss ible.
• USA model s: If the BRAKE warning light and the ~ warning
light come on together, the rear wheel s could lock up first under
ha rd braking . Rear wheel lock-up can caus e lo ss of v ehicle control
and an accident . Hav e your vehicl e repaired immediately by your
author ized Aud i dealer o r a qualified workshop . Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application s.
• Canada model s: If the br ake warning light (CD) and the ABS
wa rning l ight 9 come on together , the rear wheels could lock up
first under hard b raking. Rear wheel lock -up can cause loss of
vehicle contr ol and an accident. Have your v ehicle repair ed imme ­
di ately b y your authorized Audi dealer or a qual ified workshop.
Drive slowly and avoid sudd en, hard brake applicati ons. •
Electromechanical parking brake
~E (USA models) /(®) (Canada models)
The warning/indicator light monitors the electromechan­
ical parking brake .
With the parking brake app lied and the ign ition turned on, the
wa rni ng/indicator light i lluminates. Afte r the ignition has been
tur ned off, the warning/ind icator light continues to illum inate for
about 30 seconds. If the par king b rak e is applied with the ignition _,,,,

turned off, the warning/indicator light illuminates for about 30
se conds.
Th e warn ing/ind icator light will go out when the parking brake is
re leased .
If the war ning/indi cator lig ht flashes cont inuo usly
aft er applying th e
park ing brake, braking force is not sufficient to prevent the ve hicle
from roll ing unin ten tio na lly. Please note the following:
• If the s lope of the g round is too steep to park the ve hicle, the addi ­
tional drive message appears
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep .
• In the eve nt of a pa rking brake malfunction, the yellow ~ symbol
appears in the instrument cl uster disp lay and the drive r message
Parking brake ma lfunction! is displayed. H ave t he malfunction
repaire d as soon as possible by an authorized A udi dea le r or any other
qualified wo rkshop .•

The warning/indica tor li ght flashes if brake fluid level is
l ow , if there i s an AB S system malf unctio n or a p arki ng
b rake malfuncti on.
The light illum inates whe n the ignition is turned on. It goes out after
th e engine ha s been sta rted . Thi s indi cates tha t the brake war ning
light is functioning properly .
If the brake warning light doe s not light up when the engine is
cranking, there may be a malfunction in the electrical system. In
this case, contact an authorized Audi dealer.
If the brake system wa rning/ind icator light flashes, there is a brake
system malfunction . By press ing the
[SET ] button, you can bring up a
driver message w hich expla ins the m alfu nct io n in more det ail
=>page 28.

hard braking. Rear wheel lock-up can cause lo ss of vehicle control
and an accident . Have your vehicle repaired immediately by your
authorized Audi dealer or a qualified work shop . Drive slowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake applications.
• Canada model s: If the brake warning light (CD) and the ABS
warning light :: come on together, the rear wheels could lock up
fir st under hard braking . R ear wheel lock -up can cause lo ss of
vehicle control and an accident. Have your veh icle repaired imme­
diately by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop.
Drive slowly and avoid sudden, hard brake applications .
• If the brake warning /indicator light doe s not go out after a few
seconds and the parking brake released, or lights up while you are
driving , the fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed immediately at low speed
to the nearest authorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
and have the brake sy stem inspected .
• Always keep in mind that after several brake applications, you
will need greater pressure on the brake pedal to stop your vehicle .
Do not rely on strained brakes to re spond with maximum stopping
power in critical situations. You must allow for increased braking
distances. The extra distance used up by fading brakes could lead
to an accident . •

Introduction
General notes
The driver information display inside the instrument
cluster provides you, the driver, with much useful infor­
mation.

Information from the driver information system is shown in the
display in the center of the instrument cluster.
When you turn on the ignition and while you are driving, some func­
tions and vehicle components are scanned for their operating status. Malfunctions or required service procedures are signaled audibly and
shown by red and yellow lighted symbols and reminders to the driver
in the display.
The driver is also shown information about radio and CD operation
and directions for the navigation system*. You can find additional
information on these subjects in the MMI manual.
The illustrations in the instrument panel display differ in some of the
vehicles.
The driver information system provides the following functions: Sound system display

If prior ity 1 or priority 2 fau lts a re not show n by the A uto Ch eck
Con trol, the name of the ra dio s tat ion you are tuned to or the
frequency and the recept io n range are s hown in the upper area of the
display.
When the C D is in use, the title of t he track be ing p layed is shown. The
CD changer * displays the number of the current CD (CDl to CD6). •

Driver information display
If your vehicle is stationary or if you are drivi ng at very low speeds, the
t empe ra tu re disp layed m ay be s light ly hig her t han the ac tual
temperature outside due to the heat rad iat ing from the engine .
T he unit of measurement for the temperature can be set in either ° F
or in °Con the MM I* or on the radio co ntrol unit. The ou ts ide tempe r­
ature display automatically shows the unit o f measurement that has
been set. For ad ditio nal info rmation, see t he MM I* or the r adio
instruction manual.
& WARNING
• Never use the outside temperatu re display to determine if a
road surface i s ic y or not . Keep in mind that road surfaces, espe­
cially bridges and o verpasses , could be ice covered and slippery
even at an out side temperature above 41 °F (+5 °C ).
• Always remember , even if the "snowflake " symbol (ice
warning ) does not appear in the di splay, black ice could be on the
road.
• Always reduce your speed and drive with special care in cold
weathe r conditions when the chance of encountering icy road
s urfaces increa se s.
[I) Tips
If the vehicle is s tat ionary, or if yo u are dr iv ing a t a very low speed, the
temperature shown in the d isplay m ight be slightly higher than the
act ua l ou tside tempe ra tur e. This is caused by the heat being radia ted
from the engine. •

Current speed appears in the display. Speed is shown in 1 mph incre­
ments (USA models) or 1 km/h increments (Canada models).
You ca n sw itch the display from miles to kilometers and vice versa via
the MMI. •
Open door or trunk lid warning
The pictogram alerts you when doors or the trunk lid have
been left open.

The Open Door/Trunk lid warning d isplays if even one door, the hood
or the trunk lid is open. This symbol also shows
which door or lid has
not been closed=> fig. 12.
As soon as the door, the hood and the trunk lid are closed properly, the door and trunk lid warn ing tu rns off and the selected dr iver info r­
mation system functions are displayed again .•
Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when your next
service is due.

The schedule for the next oil change or inspection is calculated auto ­
matically and displayed accordingly . The disp lay works in two stages :
Service remind er
30 days before the next serv ice is due , a serv ice reminder appears in
the display when you turn on the ignition=> fig. 13.
After abo ut S seconds the d isp lay switches back to norma l. The
distance and time remaining are updated each t ime the ignition is
turned on until the date due for service is reached.
Ser vice due
When the due date for service is reached, the message Servic e due !
appears in the instrument cluster immediately after you turn on the ..,,

ignition. Additionally, a warning tone sounds. After about S seconds
the display switches back to normal.
Calling up the service schedules
If or when an oil change or inspection is due, can be shown in the
radio or MMI* display by selecting the service interval display in the
car menu. Select
I CAR]> Service interval display .
Resetting the service interval display
Your authorized Audi dealer will reset the corresponding service
schedule after performing the appropriate service on your vehicle.
You also have the possibility to reset the oil change schedule after
having performed an oil change according to Audi specifications .
Select
I CAR]> Service interval display > Reset oil change interval.
0 Note
If you disconnect the battery termina ls, no calculat ions can be made
for the serv ice interval display dur ing this time and no service
reminder will appear. Remember that observing the proper service
intervals is vitally important to extending the life of your veh icle,
particularly the engine, and maintaining its value . Even if the mileage
dr iven is low, the maximum period of one year from one service to the
next must not be exceeded.
[ i J Tips
• Do not reset the display between oil changes, otherwise the
display will be incorrect.
• The information in the Service Reminder remains stored even
when the vehicle battery is disconnected .•

On-Board Diagnostic system (OBD)
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Malfunct ion Indicator Lamp (MIL) in the instrument cluster
=>
page 12, fig. 7 is part of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
Th e warning/indicator light illuminates when the ignition is switched
on and goes out after the engine starts and the idle has stabilized.
This indicates that the MIL is working properly.
If the light does not go out after the engine is started, or illuminates
whi le you are driving, a malfunction may exist in the engine system.
If the light illuminates, the catalytic converter could be damaged.
Continue driving
with reduced power (avoiding sustained high
speeds and/or rapid accelerat ions) and have the condition corrected.
Contact your authorized Aud i dealer .
If the light illuminates, the electronic speed limiter may also be
malfunction ing. For more information=>
page 22, "Electronic speed
limiter".
An improperly closed fuel filler cap may also cause the MIL light to
illuminate
=> page 2 76. •

Driver information display
On-Board Diagnostics monitors the components of your emission
control system. Each monitored component in your engine system
has been assigned a code . In case of a malfunction, the component
will be identified and the fault stored as a code in the control module
memory .
The MIL light may also illuminate if there is a leak in the on-board fuel
vapor recovery system. If the light i llumi nates after a refueling , stop
the vehicle and make sure the fuel filler cap is properly closed
=> page 276.
In order to make an accurate diagnosis, the stored data can only be
displayed using special diagnostic equipment (generic scan too l for
OBD).
In order to connect the special diagnostic equipment, push the plug
into the Data Link Connector (DLC). The DLC is located to the right of
the hood release
=> page 21, fig. 14.
Your authorized Audi dea ler or qualified workshop can interpret the
code and perform the necessary repair. •
Electronic speed limiter
Your vehicle may be factory equipped with tires that are rated for a
maximum speed of 130 mph (210 km/h). This is less than the
maximum speed of your veh icle. To reduce the risk of sudden t ire
fai lure and loss of control if the vehicle is operated at excessive
speeds, your vehicle also has an electronic speed limiter. The elec­
tronic speed limiter prevents your vehicle from going faster than the
tire speed rating. For more information=>
page 307.
If the engine control unit receives faulty vehicle road speed signals,
the Malfunction Ind icator Lamp (M IL) will illuminate. If this
occurs , contact the nearest authorized Audi dealer for assistance .
& WARNING
Always observe the posted speed limits and adjust your speed to
suit prevailing road, traffic and weather conditions. Never drive
your vehicle faster than the maximum speed rating of the tires
installed. •
Trip computer
Introduction
The trip computer gives you information on current and
average fuel mileage, average speed, fuel range and
driving time.

Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep your driving
speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns if the driver exceeds a previously
stored maximum speed. A warning tone will sound as soon as the
vehicle speed exceeds the set speed by about 3 mph (3 km/h) . At the
same time, a warning symbol appears in the display. The symbol 's
appearance might be different in some models .
The speed warning system has
two warning thresholds that function
independently of each other and that have somewhat different
purposes:
Speed warning 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maximum speed while you are
driving. This setting w ill remain in effect until you turn off the igni­
tion, assuming that you have not changed or reset the setting .
The speed warning symbo l
0 (USA models)/0 (Canada mode ls) in
the warning 1 display appears when you exceed the maximum speed .
It goes out when the speed falls be low the stored maximum speed.
The speed warning symbol will also go out if the speed
exceeds the
stored maximum speed by more than about 25 mph
(40 km/h) for at
least
10 seconds. The stored maximum speed is deleted.

Speed warning 2
Storing warning 2 is recommended if you always want to be reminded
of a certain speed, for example when you are travel ing in a country
that has a general maximum speed limit, or if you do not want to
exceed a specified speed for winter tires.
The speed warning 2 symbol,

warning 1, it will not go out until the vehicle speed drops below the
stored speed limit.

Even though your veh icle is equipped with a speed warn ing system,
you should still watch the speedometer to make sure you are not
dr iv ing faster than the speed limit.•

Warning threshold 1 is set by the [SET] button.

Storing the maximum speed
- Drive at the desired maximum speed.
- Press the
[SETI button in the instrument panel display

Resetting the maximum speed
-Drive the vehicle at a speed of at least 3 mph (5 km/h)
- Press the
[SET) button for more than 2 seconds .

The speed warning symbol '8 (USA models) /8 (Canada models) will
appear briefly in the display when you release the
I SETJ button to
indicate that the maximum speed has been stored successfully .
The maximum speed remains stored until it is changed by pressing
the
I SETJ button again briefly or until it is deleted by a lengthy push
on the button .•
Speed warning 2: setting a speed limit
The /11/111* or the radio control unit is used to set, change
or delete warning threshold 2.
- Select: Function button I CAR]> Instrument cluster>
Speed warning.
• Speed warning -the warning threshold can be turned on or off .
• Speed warning -a warning tone will sound if you exceed the speed
you have set.
Warning threshold 2 can be set in the speed range starting from
18
mph to 150 mph (30 km/h to 240 km/h). Settings can each be
adjusted in intervals of 6 mph (10 km/h). •
Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check control monitors the function of certain vehicle
features and components. It simply makes sure these features and
components are working properly. The Auto-Check control works as
long as the ignition is on, as well as whenever the veh icle is driven.
If a component is malfunctioning or if the need for an urgent repair
has been detected, this will appear in the instrument cluster display.
You will also hear an audible warning tone. The displays are color
coded in e ither red or yellow depend ing on their level of priority . A
red symbol means
Danger, a yellow symbol indicates Warning . In
certain situations, information message for the driver appear in addi­
tion to the red and yellow symbols.
Th e Auto-Check Contro l will automatically perform a test each time
you switch on the ignition. With the selector lever in
P or N, the
following message appears in the display:
When stationary apply footbrake while selecting gear.
When you a select a different gear (for example: R, D, etc.), the
message will disappear and the Auto-Check function is displayed.
If there is a malf unction, then the malfunction message will appear
about 15 seconds after you start the vehicle. At the same time you
w ill hear a wa rning tone. •
Driver information messages
Driver information messages are shown in the instru­
ment cluster display in addition to symbols.

For examp le, if the transmission selector lever is not in the P position
when the eng ine is turned off, the following message appears:
Shift to P , otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if
lever is not in P. .,._

The ignition key can only be removed with the selector in this posi­
tion. This and other messages are brought up if a function cannot be
carried out.
Driver messages and red symbols
If a red symbol appears in the display, a driver message is also
displayed automatically.
For example, the symbol for a problem with engine oil pressure
't=r.
appears in the display . The message:
Switch off engine ! Oil pressure too low
The driver message in the display goes out after about 5 seconds. The
driver message can be displayed again by briefly pressing the
!SET]
button~ page 26, fig. 20.
Driver messages and yellow symbols
If a yellow symbol appears in the display, a driver message is also
displayed automatically .
For example, the symbo l appears in the display, ind icating low
windshield washer fluid level. The following message also appears:
Please refill washer fluid
The driver message disappears after a few seconds. The driver
message can be displayed again by briefly pressing the
!SET]
button. •

A red symbol means DANCER.

- Pull off the road.
- Stop the vehicle.
- Turn off the engine.
- Check the malfunctioning system . Contact your autho-
rized Audi dealer or a qualified workshop for assistance.
Red symbols ind icate a priority 1 malfunction -Danger!
With a priority 1 malfunction, a red symbol appears in the upper
center area of the display~ fig. 21. A driver message appears as well
to expla in the malfunction in more detail. When this symbol appears,
three warning tones sound in succession. The symbol continues to
flash until the fault has been corrected .
If
several prior ity 1 ma lfunctions are present, the symbo ls appear in
succession and remain for about 2 seconds.
Th e driver warning goes o ut after about 5 seconds, but it can be
brought up again at any time by pressing the
