Press the button @. The LED in the button il­
l uminates .
If the LED illuminates, the interior lights turn
on automatically when you unlock the vehicle,
open a door or remove the ignition key. The in­
terior lights turn off several seconds after
your close the doors, when you lock the vehi­
cle or when you turn the ignition on. When a
door is open, the light turns off after a few
minutes.

To turn a reading light on/off, press the but­

The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted.

(D Tips
The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) lights on when the ignition is
switched on and the vehicle lights are
turned off. As the daylight fades, the illu­
mination of the dials likewise dims auto­
matically and will go out completely when
the outside light is very low. This feature is
meant to remind you to switch on the
headlights when outside light conditions
become poor.

Turn the knob to the desired position :

To help you see the curb when backing into a pa rking space, the surface of the m irror t ilts
slightly . The knob m ust be in the

for this to happen .
You can adjust the ti lted mirror surface by
turning the knob in the desired direction .
When you move out of reverse and into anoth­
e r gear, the new mirror posi tion is stored and
assigned to the key you are using.
The mirror goes back into its origina l posit io n
once yo u drive forward f aster than 9 mph
(15 km/h) or switch the ignition off .
_& WARNING
Curved mirror s urfaces (convex or spheri ­
cal *) increase your field of view . Remem­
ber that vehicles or other objects will ap­
pear smaller and farther away than when
seen in a flat m irror. If you use this mirror
to estimate distances of following veh icles
when changing lanes, you could estimate incorrectly and cause an accident .

- If you wash the vehicle in an automatic
ca r wash, you must fold the exterior m ir ­
r o rs in to reduce the r isk of damage to
the mirrors .

electrical system, you can st ill adjust the

Electrolyte fluid can leak from automatic
d imm ing mirrors if the glass is broken .
Electrolyte fluid can irr itate skin, eyes and
r espiratory system.
- Repeated or prolonged exposure to e lec­
trolyte can cause irritation to the respira­
tory system, especially among people
with asthma or o ther resp ira to ry condi­
tions . Get fresh air immediately by leav­
ing the vehicle or, if that is no t possib le,
open windows and doors all the way.
- If electroly te gets into the eyes, flush
them thoroughly with large amounts of
clean water for at least 15 minutes; medical attention is recommended.
- If electrolyte contacts skin, fl ush affect­
ed area with clean water for at least 15
minutes and then wash affected area
with soap and water; medical attention
is recommended. Thoroughly wash af ­
fected cloth ing and shoes before reuse.

-If swallowed and person is conscious,
rinse mouth with water for at least 15
minutes . Do not induce vomiting unless
instructed to do so by medical professio­
nal. Get medical attention immediately.
(D Note
Liquid electrolyte leaking from broken mir­
ror glass will damage any plastic surfaces
it comes in contact with . Clean up spilled
electrolyte immediately with clean water
and a sponge.
@ Tips
- Switching off the dimming function of
the inside rear view mirror also deacti­
vates the automatic dimm ing function of
the exterior mirrors .
-Automatic dimming for the mirror only
operates properly if the light striking the
inside mirror is not hindered by other ob­
jects.
- The automatic dimming mirrors do not
dim when the interior lighting is turned
on or the reverse gear is selected .

Move the windshield wiper lever to the corre­
sponding position:
@-Windshield wiper off
CD-Interval mode . To extend/shorten the
wiper intervals, move the switch @to the
left/right. In vehicles with a rain sensor* the
wipers turn on in the rain once the vehicle
speed exceeds approximately 2 mph (4 km/h) .
The higher the sensitivity of the rain sensor* is
set (switch @to the right), the earlier the
windshield wipers react to moisture on the
windshield. In some models, you can switch
rain sensor mode off and switch intermittent
mode on in the MMI* . Select:

> Rain sensor. In intermittent mode,
you can adjust the interval time using the@

® -Clean the windshield. To eliminate water

by moving the lever to position ® within 10

wipe function is reactivated the next time the
ignition is switched on.

temper atures w hen the ignit ion i s on.
- When stop ping temporarily , (e.g. at a
traff ic light) the se t speed of the wi nd- shield wipers is automatically
reduced by

dations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can
only provide maximum protection if the front
seats are correctly adjusted.
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger. Adjust
your seat properly so that :
- you can easily and quick ly reach all the
switches and controls in the instrument
panel
- your body is properly supported thus reduc­ ing physical stress and fatigue
- the safety belts and airbag system can offe r
maximum protection
¢ page 140.
I n the following sections, you will see exactly
how you can best adjust your seats .
There are special regulations and instructions
for installing a child safety seat on the front passenger's seat. Always follow the informa­
tion regard ing child safety provided in
¢ page 161, Child Safety.

Refer to ¢ page 121, Driving Safely for
important information, tips, suggestions
and warnings that you should read and fol­
low for your own safety and the safety of
your passengers.
.&_ WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and
all other passengers can result in serious
personal injury.
- Always keep your feet on the floor when
the vehicle is in motion -never put your
feet on top of the instrument panel, out of the w indow or on top of the seat cush­
ion. This app lies especially to the passen-

gers . If your seating position is incorrect,
you increase the risk of injury in the case
of sudden braking or an accident . If the
airbag inflates and the seating position
is incorrect, this cou ld result in pe rsonal
in jury or even death.
- It is important for both the driver and front passenger to keep a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between them­
selves and the steering wheel and/or in­
s trumen t panel. If you're s itting any
closer than th is, the airbag system can ­
not protect you properly. In addition, the
front seats and head restraints m ust be
adj usted to your body height so that they
can give you max imum protect ion.
- Always try to keep as much distance as
possible between yourself and the steer­
ing wheel or instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front pas­ senger's seat whi le the vehicle is moving.
Your seat may move unexpectedly, caus­
ing sudden loss of veh icle control and
pe rsonal injury. If you adjust you r seat
while the veh icle is moving, you are ou t
of po sit ion.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving .
We recommend that you adjust the dr iver's
seat in the follow ing manner:
.., Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so
that you can easily push the pedals to the
floor wh ile keeping your knees slightly bent

"" Adjust the seatback so that when you sit
w ith your back against the seatback , you can
s ti ll grasp the top of t he steering wheel.

straints: Adjust the head restraint so the up­

of your head. If that is not possib le, try to
adjust the head restraint so that it is as .,.

profiles for the driver . The memory function is
operated through the master key and the memory buttons in the driver's door.
The driver's seating profi le is stored and as­
signed to the master key each time the vehicle
is locked. The seating profile is recalled auto­
mat ically when the veh icle is unlocked. If two
people use one vehicle , it is recommended
that each person always uses "their own"
master key .
Up to 2 seat profiles can be stored in the
memory buttons in the driver's door. Once
they are stored, these seat profiles can be se­ lected at any time.
In addition to the driver 's seat settings, you
can also store and access the exterior mirror
adjustment settings* using the remote con­
trol key or memory button .

Applies to vehicles: with seat memory
To assign the driver 's seat settings to the re­
mote control key when locking the vehicle, the
function must be activated in the radio or

er's door.
Switching the memory function on/off
~ Press the ION/OF F! button to switch the
memory function on/off. The word
OFF
lights up when the memory function is
sw itched off. Seat profiles are not stored.
Storing a seat profile
~ Press the ISETI button. When the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
tings.
~ Press a memory button dII or [Ii) briefly. A
tone conf irms that the settings were stored.
Accessing a seat profile
~ If the driver's door is open, press a memory
button .
~ If the driver's door is closed, press and hold
the memory button until the seat adjust­
ment is complete.
A WARNING
- For safety reasons, the seat setting can only be recalled when the vehicle is sta­
tionary -otherwise you risk having an ac­
cident.
- I n an emergency the recall procedure can
be cancelled by pressing the
I ON/OFF !
switch or by tapping the memory but­
tons.

Storage
General overview

- Always remove objects from the instru-
ment panel. Any items not put away
could slide around ins ide the veh icle
while driv ing or when accelerat ing o r
when applying the brakes or when driv ­
ing around a corner.
- When you are dr iving make sure that
anything you may have placed in the cen­
ter console or other storage locations
cannot fall out into the footwe lls. In case
of sudden braking you would not be able
to brake or accelerate.

- T he ski sack is intended only for the
transportation of skis and other light ob­
jects. To reduce the risk of serious per­

- When braking rapidly or during an acci­
dent, the load could be displaced and
cause injury to occupants.
- Sharp edges on the load must be covered
for protect ion. Always fasten the belt
t ightly around the sack and its contents

-For safety reasons, do not transport
more than two pairs of skis in the ski
sack.
- You must secure the ski sack with the
strap after loading.
- Make sure that all objects you are trans­
porting with the backrests folded for­
ward are secured . They could slide
around dur ing sudden braking maneu­
vers and cause injur ies .

-Never stow the sk i sack away when it is
still wet or damp (for example, snow melt ing from skis) . Allow it to dry com­
plete ly before stowing it away .
- When transporting skis or snowboards, tighten the securing strap between the
bindings.
- Position skis in the ski sack w ith the
po inted ends fac ing the front and ski
po les w ith the pointed ends facing the
rear.

We recommend pressing the IAUTO I button and setting the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C) .

Press the buttons to turn the function s on or
off. Use the d ials to adjust the temperature,
the blower speed and the a ir distribution . The
L ED in a button will light up when the func­
tion is sw itched on. The settings are displayed
for a few seconds in the radio or MMI* display .
In vehicles with a 3 -zone deluxe automat ic cl i­
mate control systems *, the dr iver and front
passenger side can be adjusted separately.
The settings are also d isplayed in the cl imate
con trol system display .
IOFFI Switching the climate control
system on /off
The IOF FI button switches the climate control
sys tem on o r off .
It also swi tches on when you press the knob. Airflow from outs
ide is
blocked when the climate control system is
switched off .
IACI Switching cooling m ode on /off
The a ir is not coo led and h umidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off .
This can cause fog on the w indows. Cooling
mode switches off automatically when the
outside temperature is be low zero .
1- 1 Sw itching recirculati on mode on /off
In recircu lation mode, the air inside the vehi ­
cle is circulated and filtered. This prevents the
unfiltered air outs ide the veh icle from enter­
ing the vehicle interior . We recommend

Ste ering lock
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key . The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wo uld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons , you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away .
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equ ipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preven ting people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatures .
