What can Audi adaptive cruise control do?
The adaptive cruise control works in conjunc­
tion with a radar sensor installed in the front
of the vehicle ¢

ed .
On open roads w ith no traffic, adaptive cruise
control wo rks like a regular cruise control sys­
tem. The stored speed is maintained. When
approaching a moving vehicle detected up
ahead, the adaptive cruise control system au ­
tomatically slows down to match that vehi­
cle's speed and then maintains the distance
that the driver previously stored. As soon as
the system does not detect a vehicle up
ahead, adaptive cruise control accelerates back up to the stored speed.
Which functions can be controlled?
When you switch adaptive cruise control on,
you can set the current speed as the "control speed" ¢
page 95, Switching on and off.
When driving, you can stop cruise control

page 97 or change the speed¢ page 96
at any time .

You can set any speed between 20 mph and
95 mph (30 and 150 km/h).
Ind icator lamps and messages in the instru­
ment cluster disp lay inform you about the cur­
rent system status and settings.

tance to the vehicle ahead and what that dis­
tance is.

Both arrows on the scale © indicate the dis­
tance to the vehicle ahead. No arrow appears
when the vehicle is on an open road and there
is no object ahead . If an object is detected
ahead, the arrow moves on the scale .
The green zone on the scale shows the stored
d istance. For information on changing the

q page 97. If the
distance selected is too close or may soon be ­
come too close, the arrows move into the red
z one on the scale .
A WARNING
Improper use of the adaptive cruise con­
trol can cause collisions, other accidents
and serious personal injur ies .
- Pressing the
!SET ! button when driving at
speeds below 20 mph (30 km/h), w ill au ­
tomatically accelerate the vehicle to
20 mph (30 km/h), which is the mini­
m um speed that can be set.
(i} Tips
-If you switch the ignit ion or the adaptive
cruise control off, the set speed is erased
from the system memo ry.
- The electronic stab ilizat ion control (ESC)
and the anti-slip-regulat ion (ASR) are au­
tomatically turned on when the adapt ive
cruise contro l is turned on. Both systems
cannot be turned off if the adaptive
cruise control is turned on.

Overriding cruise control
• To accelerate manually, press the accelera­
tor pedal. The message
ACC override ap­
pears.
• To resume adaptive cruise control, remove
your foot from the gas pedal. The system re­
turns again to the speed that was saved be ­
fore.
• You can save a new speed at any time by
pressing the
I SETI button ¢ page 11, fig. 4.
Canceling cruise control while driving
• Move the lever into position @. The mes­
sage
ACC standby appears. Or
• press the brake pedal.
• To resume the stored speed, move the lever
into position @.
A WARNING
Never resume the stored speed if the
speed is too high for prevailing road, traf­
fic or weather conditions.

• To increase or reduce the distance by incre­
ments, tap the switch again to the left or
r ight. The distance between the two vehicles
w ill c hange in the instrument cluster dis­
p lay .
When approach ing a moving vehicle up ahead,
the adapt ive cruise control system brakes to
match that object's speed and then mainta ins
the stored distance. If the vehicle ahead ac­
ce lerates, adaptive cruise contro l will also ac­
celerate up to the stored speed.

What can Audi braking guard do?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a vehicle ahead brakes sud­
denly or if your own vehicle is traveling at a high speed and approaching a vehicle up
ahead that is moving more slowly . Braking
gua rd does not react if it cannot detect the
situation .
The system advises you of various situations:
- The distance warning is given if you are too
close to the vehicle ahead for a long time. If
the vehicle ahead brakes sharply, you wi ll
not be able to avoid a collis ion. The indicator
light. in the display comes on .
- The approach warning is given when a de­
tected vehicle up ahead in your lane is mov­
ing much more slowly than you are or if it
brakes sharply . When th is warning is given,
it may only be possible to avoid a collision
by swerving or braking sharply. Th e indicator
light. and indicator in the display will
warn you about the danger

If you do not react fast enough or do not react
at all to the situation, Braking guard will in-

- If a coll ision is imminent , the system will
first provide an acute warning by briefly and
sharply applying the brakes.
- If you do not react to the acute warning,
braking guard can brake within the lim its of
the system. This reduces the vehicle speed
in the event of a collision.
- At speeds unde r 20 mph (30 km/h), the sys­
tem can initiate a comp lete deceleration
shortly before a collision
ll.
- If the braking guard senses that you are not
braking hard enough when a collision is im­
minent, it can increase the braking force .
Which functions can be controlled?
You can switch braking guard and the dis­
tance/approach warning on or off in the radio
or M MI
c::> page 100, Settings in the radio/
MMI.
A WARNING
-Lack of attention can cause collisions, oth-
er accidents and serious personal injuries.
The braking guard is an assist system and
cannot prevent a collision by itself. The
driver must always intervene. The dr iver is
always respons ible for braking at the cor­
r ect time .
- Always pay close attention to traffic,
even when the braking guard is switched
on . Be ready to intervene and be ready to
take comp lete control whenever necessa­
ry. Always keep the safe and legal dis­
tance between your vehicle and vehicles up ahead.
- Braking guard works within limits and
will not respond outside the system lim­
its, for examp le when approaching a
stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle (end of a traffic jam or vehicle that has
broken down in traffic).

- Always remember t hat t he radar sens or

defined detection and range limits that
may preve nt the proper detection of oth­
er v eh icles.
- The radar senso r's fu nction and range
can be reduced by rain, s now a nd heavy
spray. Mo ving v ehicl es u p ahead may not
b e promptly det ecte d or may not be de­
te cte d at al l.
- Reflective surfaces in cl udi ng c ras h barri­
ers or tu nnel ent ran ces may impair the
f unc tion of the r ad ar sen sor.

In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
cr itical for a lane change even if it is still
somewhat far away. The fas ter a vehicle ap­
p roaches, the sooner the display in the exteri­
or m irror will t urn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exterior m irror if they are classified as cr itical
for a lane change. All vehicles detec ted by
side assist are indicated by the time they en­
ter your "blind spot", at the latest.

@ Veh icle s left behind
If you s low ly pass a vehi cle that s ide assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the
vehicle and you r vehicle is less than 9 mph
(15 km/h)), the display in the exterior mirror
turns on as soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
T he disp lay will not t urn on if you quickly pass
a vehicle that side assist has detected (the dif­
ference in speed between the veh icle and your
vehicle is greater than 9 mph (15 km/h)).
Functional limitations
The radar senso rs are designed to detect the
left and right adjacent lanes when the road
lanes are the normal width. In certain situa­
tions, the disp lay in the exterior mirror may
turn on even though there is no vehicle locat­
ed in the area that is cr itical for a la ne change.
For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are dr iving
on the edge of your lane.
If this is the case,
the system may have detected the vehicle in
another lane that is
not adjacent to your
current lane .
- if you a re driving through a curve. Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane ove r
from the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or d isp laced guard rails) .
- In poor weather conditions. The side assist
functions are l imited .
Do not cover the radar sensors <=>
fig. 117 with
stickers, depos its, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the funct ion. Do
not use s ide ass ist when towing a trailer. For
i nformation on cleaning, refer to<=>
page 195.

- Always pay attention to traffic and to t he
area a round your ve hicl e. S ide assist can­
not repla ce a driver's attention. T he driv­
er a lone is always responsible for lane
changes and similar driving mane uvers.

-Improper reliance on the side assist sys­
tem can cause collisions and serious
personal injury:
- Never rely only on side assist when
changing lanes.
- Always check rear view mirrors to make
sure that it is safe to change lanes.
- Side assist cannot detect all vehicles un­
der all conditions- danger of accident!
- Please note that side assist indicates
there are approaching vehicles, or
vehicles in your blind spot, only after
your vehicle has reached a driving speed
of at least 19 mph (30 km/h).
- In certain situations, the system may not
function or its function may be limited.
For example:
- if vehicles are approaching or being left
behind very quickly . The display may
not turn on in time.
- in poor weather conditions such as
heavy rain, snow or heavy mist .
- on very wide lanes, in tight curves or if
there is a rise in the road surface.
Vehicles in the adjacent lane may not
be detected because they are outside
of the sensor range.
(D Note
The sensors can be displaced by impacts or
damage to the bumper, wheel housing and
underbody. This can affect the system.
Have your authorized Audi dealer or au­
thorized Audi Service Facility check their
function.
@ Tips
- If the window glass in the driver's door
or front passenger's door has been tint­
ed, the display in the exterior mirror may
be misinterpreted.

Activating and deactivating

Adjusting the display brightness

The signal brightness con be set in the radio

The display brightness adjusts automatically
to the brightness of the surroundings, both in
the information and in the warning stage . In
very dark or very bright surroundings, the dis­ play is already set to the minimum or maxi­
mum level by the automatic adjustment. In
such cases, you may notice no change when
adjusting the brightness, or the change may
only be noticeable once the surroundings
change.
Adjust the brightness to a level where the dis­
play in the information stage will not disrupt
your view forward. If you change the bright­
ness, the display in the exterior mirror will
briefly show the brightness level in the infor­
mation stage. The brightness of the warning
stage is linked to the brightness in the infor ­
mation stage and is adjusted along with the
information stage adjustment.

Driver messages
Applies to vehicles: with Audi side assist
If s ide ass ist switches off by itself, the LED in
the button turns off and a message will ap­
pear in the instrument cluster display:
Audi side assist unavailable: Sensors blocked
The radar sensors' vision is affected. Do not
cover the area in front of the sensors with bike
wheels, stickers, dirt or other objects. Clean
the area in front of the sensors, if necessary
¢ page 103, fig. 117.
Audi side assist: Currently unavailable
Side assist cannot be switched on temporarily
because there is a malfunc tion (for example,
the battery charge leve l may be too low) .
Audi side assist: System fault!
The system cannot guara ntee that it will de­
tect veh icles correctly and it is switched off .
The sensors have been displaced or are faulty.
H ave the system checked by an authorized
Aud i dealer or authorized Aud i Service Facility
soon.
Audi side assist: Unavailable when towing
Side assist sw itches off automatically when a
factory- insta lled trailer h itch is connected to
the electrical connector on the trailer. There is
no guarantee the system will switch off when
usi ng a retrofitted t ra iler hitch. Do not use
side assist when towing a trailer .
