or example, in a frontal co llision at a speed of 30 mph ( 48 km/h),
t he forces acting on a 10 -lb (4. 5 kg) o bjec t are abo ut 20 times the
normal weight of the item . This means that the we ight of the item
wo uld sudden ly be about 200 lbs . (90 kg) . Yo u can imagine the inj u­
ries that a 200 lbs . (90 kg) item flying free ly through the passenger
compa rtment cou ld cause in a coll ision like this .

Weak, damaged or improper straps used to secure items to tie ­
downs can fail dur ing hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
• Always use suitable mounting straps and properly secure
items to the tie -downs in the luggage compartment to help
prevent items from shifting or flying forward as dangerous
missiles .
• When the rear seat ba ckrest is folded down , always use suit ­
able mounting straps and properly secure items to the tie -downs

Driving and environment
The first 1,000 miles (1,500 km) and afterwards

The engine needs to be run-in during the first 1,000 miles
(1,500 km).

Do not use full throttle.
- Do not drive faster than 3/4 of the top speed marked on
the speedometer.
- Avoid high engine speeds .

permiss ible road or engine speed .

During the first few hours of driving, the eng ine's internal friction is
higher than later when all the moving parts have been broken in.
How well this break -in process is done depends to a considerable
extent on the way the vehicle is driven during the first 1,000 miles
(1,500 ki lometers).

Extreme ly high engine speeds are automatically reduced. However,
these rpm limits are programmed for an engine well run-in, not a
new engine .

for the first 350 mi les (500 k ilometers) after fitt ing .

The catalytic converter is an efficient "clean -up" device built into the
exhaust system of the vehicle. The cata lytic converter burns many
of the po llutants in the exhaust gas before they are released into the
atmosphere.
The exclusive use of un leaded fuel is critica lly important for the life
of the catalytic converter and proper functioning of the engine .

• Be aware that just one tank filling with le aded fue l wil l a lready
seriously degrade the performance of the catalytic converter.
• Do not exceed the correct engine oil level

• Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes completely empty. The
engine could misf ire. Unburned fuel could also get into the exhaust
system and this could cause the catalytic converter to overheat.
• Do not turn off the ignit ion whi le the vehicle is moving.
• Do not continue to operate your vehicle under these conditions,
as otherwise fuel can reach the cata lytic converter. This could result
in overheating of the converter, requiring its rep lacement .

• To assure efficient operation of the Emission Control System:
- Have your vehic le maintained properly and i n accordance w ith
the service recommendations in your Warranty

- Lack of proper maintenance as wel l as improper use of the
vehic le wi ll impair the function of the em ission control system
and could lead to damage .
Even when the Emission Control System is operating properly, the
exhaust gas can have a sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some
operating states . This depends on the su lfur content of the fuel
bei ng used. Using a different brand of fue l may help, or fil ling the
tank with lead-free super grade gasoline .
Operate your vehicle economically
and minimize pollution
General
Your personal style of driving will determine the economy
of your vehicle, as well as exhaust and noise levels .
Fuel economy, environmental impact, and wear on your engine,
brakes and tires largely depend on three factors:
• your persona l driving style
• operating conditions
• technica l limitations
If you anticipate what you need to do next and drive economica lly,
you can easily cut your fuel consumpt ion by 10-15 percent . This
section wil l give you some tips on how you can help the environ-

The consumption estimates as published by ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre ­
spond to your actua l consumption on the road, which wi ll vary
depending upon vehic le load and speed, road and weather condi­
tions, trip length, etc .•
Drive smoothly and keep a tookout ahead
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are accelerating.
- Avoid unnecessary accelerating and brak ing.
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are accelerating . If you antici ­
pate what is going to happen next, you will need to brake less and,
thus, accelerate less. Let the vehicle coast whenever possible -for
examp le when you see that the next traffic ligh t is red .
Avoid full thrott e
Driving at moderate speeds saves fuel and improves your
mileage.
- Try and keep we ll below your car's maximum speed.
Acce lerating gently reduces fuel consumption, engine wear, and
does not disturb the environment .
Fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and engine noise increase
disproportionately at high speeds. If you drive at approximate ly
three quarters of top speed, fuel consumption will be reduced by
one half. Never drive faster than the posted speed limit and weather
conditions permit. •
Reducing unnecessary idling
Even when your car is just idling it burns up fuel.
- Shut the engine off when you are not driving the vehicle.
-Do not warm up the vehicle by letting the eng ine run at
idle.
It makes sense to shut off the engine in traffic jams, when waiting
for trains to pass at rai lroad crossings, or at traffic lights that have
long waits on red. Turning the engine off for just 30-40 seconds
saves more fuel than is burned starting the engine again .
It takes a long time for the engine to warm up fully when it is
running at idle. However, wear and noxious emissions are especially
high when the engine is warming up. So you should drive away as
soon as you start the engine and avoid running at high rpms while
the engine is sti ll warm ing up .

Do not leave engine idling unattended after starting. If warning
lights should come on to indicate improper operation, they would
go unheeded . Extended id ling a lso produces heat, which could
resu lt in overheating or other damage to the vehicle or other
property .•
Regular maintenance
A badly tuned engine unnecessarily wastes a lot of fuel.
- Have your vehicle serviced at regular intervals.
By having your vehicle regularly serviced by an authorized Audi
dea ler helps to ensure that it runs properly and economically. The
condition of your vehicle not only affects its safety and abi lity to
hold its value, it also affects
f ue l co nsu mpti on.

The amount of oil used is related to engine load and speed .
It is normal for the oil consumption of a new engine to reach its
lowest va lue after a certain mileage has been driven.
You must drive your vehicle about 3,000 mi les (5,000 kilometers)
before you can properly assess oil consumption.
This also applies to fuel consumption and engine output.

• Have your vehicle maintained properly and in accordance with
the service recommendations in your Warranty

booklet. Lack of proper maintenance as well as improper use of the
vehic le wi ll impair the function of the emission control system and

System unless approved by the manufacturer.
• Do not alter or remove any device, such as hea t shields,
switches, ignition wires, valves, which are designed to protect your
vehicle's Emission Control System and other important vehicle
components. •

- Try to avo id driving s hor t distan ces wit h a cold engine.
The engine and catalytic converter have to reach their optimal oper­
ating t emper ature
to reduce fuel consumption and noxious emis­
sions effective ly .
Just after starting, a cold engine in a mid-size car only achieves a
fue l economy of 6 -8 miles per gallon (30 -40 1/100 km). After about a
half a mile, fuel economy climbs to 12 mpg (201/100 kml. After about
2.5 miles (4 km), the engine is at its proper operating temperature

and fuel economy has reached a normal level. So you can see that
you sh ould avoid short trips whenever possib le .
The

consumes more fuel in the winter than in the summer .•

Trailer load d is trib ut ion
Be sure the load in the trailer is held securely in place to prevent it
from shifting forward, backward or sideways.

Towing a trailer makes the engine work harder. It is important that
the cooling system 's performance is up to the additiona l load. Make
sure that the cooling system has enough flu id.
Ti re press ure
When towing a trailer, inflate the tires of your vehicle to the cold tire
pressure listed under "Full load" on the labe l located either on the
driver's side B-pillar (visible when the door is open} or inside the fuel
filler flap . Inflate trailer tires to trai ler and tire manufacturers' spec ­
ifications.
Ligh ts
The headlight settings should be checked with the trailer attached
before driving off . Check to make sure both vehicle and trailer lights
are working properly .
Safe ty c hain s
Be sure trailer safety chains are properly connected from the trailer
to the hitch on the vehicle. Leave enough slack in the chains to
permit turning corners. When you install safety chains, make sure
they will not drag on the road when you are driving.
The chains should cross under the trailer tongue to prevent it from dropping in case of separation from the hitch.

Driving with a trailer always requires extra care and
consideration.
To obtain the best possible handling of veh icle and trailer,
please note t he following :
Do not tow a loaded trailer when your car itself is not
loaded .
- Be especia lly careful when passing other vehicles .
Observe speed l imits .
Do not drive at the maximum permissible speed.
Always apply brakes early.
Monitor the temperature gauge.
W eight distrib utio n
Towing a loaded trailer with an empty car results in a h ighly
unstable distribution of weight . If this cannot be avoided, drive at
very low speeds only to avoid the risk of losing steering control.
A "balanced" rig is easier to operate and control. This means that
t he tow vehicle should be loaded to the extent possible and permis ­
sible, while keeping the trailer as light as possib le under the circum ­
stances . Whenever possible, transfer some cargo to the luggage
compartment of the tow vehicle whi le observing tongue load
requirements and vehicle loading considerations.
S pee d
The higher the speed, the more difficu lt it becomes for the d river to
control the rig. Do not drive at the maximum permissible speed.
Reduce your speed even more if load, weather or wind conditions
are unfavorable -particularly when going downhill .

Washing
F requent washing protects the vehicle.
The best protection against environmental influences is frequent
washing a nd waxing. How often this is required depends on :
• How much the vehicle is used
• Where the vehic le is pa rked (garage, in the open under trees,
etc.I
• The seasonal and weather cond itions
• Environmental influences
The longer bird dropp ings, insects, tree resin, road and industrial
grime, tar, soot, road salt and other materials remain on the vehicle
b ody, the more lasting their destructive effects will be. High temper ­
atures caused by exposure to intense sunlight intensify the corro -
sive effect, particularly when humidity is high as wel l. .,

entire engine compartment and plenum panel should be thor­
oughly cleaned at t he end of winter and retreated to prevent sal t
damage . At the same time, the underside of the vehicle shou ld be
washed as we ll.
If the eng ine compartment is cleaned at any t ime with grease
removing solutions
2 l, or if you have the engine washed, the anti ­
corrosion treat ment is al most a lways removed as wel l. It is there fore
essential to hav e a long- las ting corrosion protection r eapplied to al l
sur faces, sea ms, joints a nd co mponents in the engine compar t­
ment.

Be awa re: The engine compartment of any motor vehi cle is a
potentially hazardou s area.
• Before working in the engine compartment , be sure to read the

• Before reaching into the front p lenum panel, always remove the
ignition key . Otherwise , the w ind shield wiper sy stem cou ld unin ­
tentionally be sw itched on, pos sibly causing personal in jury from
the moving wiper linkage .
• Never reach into the area around or touch the radiator fan . The
a uxil iary f an i s temperature controlled and can switch on suddenly
- even when the ignition is off.

Gasoline
Fuel supply Using the right fuel helps keep the environment clean and
prevents engine damage.
Fuel r ecomm end ati on
The fuel recommended for your vehic le is unl eade d prem ium grade
gaso line . See also ~
page 337, "Data". Audi recommends using TOP
T IER Detergent Gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 91 AKI (95
RON). For more information on TOP TIER Detergent Gaso line, please
go to the official website (www.toptiergas .com).
The recommended gasoline octane rating for your engine can also be found on a label located on the inside of the fuel fille r flap. This
rating may be specified as AK I or RON .
Your vehic le may also be operated us ing unleaded regular gasoline
with a minimum octane rating of 87 AKl/91 RON . However, using 87
AKl/9 1 RON octane fuel will slightly reduce engine performance.
Use unle ad ed ga so line only . Unleaded gaso line is avai lable
throughout the USA, Canada, and in most European countries. We
recommend that you do not take your vehicle to areas or countr ies
where un leaded gasoline may not be available .

Octane ra tin g
Octane rating indicates a gaso line's ability to resist engine
damaging "knock" caused by premature ignition and detonation.
Therefore, buying the correct grade of gaso line is very important to
help prevent possible engine damage and a loss of engine perfor ­
mance.

Gasoline most common ly used in the United States and Canada has
the following octane ratings that can usua lly be found on the filler
pump:
• Premium Grade : 91 -96 AKI
• Regular Grade: 87 -90 AKI
Explanation of the abbreviations:
AKI = Anti Knock Index= (R +M)/2 = (RON +MON)/2
RON = Research Octane Number
MON
= M otor Octane Number .

• Do not use any fue l with octane ratings lower than 87 AKI or 91
RON otherwise expensive engine damage will occur .
• Do
not use leaded gasoline. The use of leaded gasoline w ill
severe ly damage your vehicle's catalytic converter and its abi lity to
control exhaust emissions. •
Blended gasoline
Use of g aso line containing alco hol or M TB E ( meth yl
t er tiary butyl e ther )
You may use unleaded gasoline blended with alcohol or MTBE
(commonly referred to as oxygenates) if the blended mixture meets
the follow ing criteria:

• Anti-knock index must be 87 AKI or higher .
• Blend must contain no more than 3% methanol.
• Blend must contain more than 2% co-solvents.

• Blend must contain not more than 15% MTBE.
Seasonally adjusted gasoline
Many gasoline grades are blended to perform especially well for
winter or summer driving. During seasonal change -over, we suggest
that you fill up at busy gas stations where the seasonal adjustment
is more likely to be made in time.

• Methanol fuels which do not meet these requirements may
cause corrosion and damage to plastic and rubber components in
the fuel system.
• Do not use fuels that fail to meet the specified criteria in this
chapter.
• If you are unable to determine whether or not a particular fuel
blend meets the specifications, ask your service station or its fuel
supplier.
• Do not use fuel for which the contents cannot be identified.
• Fuel system damage and performance problems resulting from
the use of fuels different from those specified are not the responsi ­
bility of Audi and are not covered under the New Vehicle or the
Emission Control System Warranties.
• If you experience a loss of fuel economy or driveability and
performance problems due to the use of one of these fuel blends,
we recommend that you switch to unblended fuel. •
Gasoline additives
A major concern among many auto manufacturers is carbon
deposit build-up caused by the type of gasoline you use.
Although gasoline grades differ from one manufacturer to another,
they have certain things in common . All gasoline grades contain
substances that can cause deposits to collect on vital engine parts,
such as fuel injectors and intake valves. Although most gasoline
brands include additives to keep engine and fuel systems clean,
they are not equally effective.
Audi recommends using TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline. For more
information on TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, please go to the offi­
cial website (www.toptiergas.com).
After an extended period of using inadequate fuels, built-up carbon
deposits can rob your engine of peak performance.

Damage or malfunction due to poor fuel quality is not covered by

The fuel filler neck is located on the right rear side panel behind the
fuel filler flap.
