IAUTO I Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode ma inta ins a constant tem­
peratu re inside the vehi cle. Air temperature,
a irflow and air d istribution are controlled au­
tomatically.
Adjusting th e tempe ratur e
Temperatures between 60 °F (+16 °C) and
84 °F ( +28 °C) can be set . Outside of this
range,
L O or HI will appear in the cl imate con­
trol system disp lay. At both of these settings,
the climate control system runs continuously
at maximum cooling or heating power . There
is no temperature regu lation.
~ Ad just ing the airflow
You can adjust the airflow manually to su it
your needs . To have the airflow regulated au­
tomatically, press the IAUTO ! button.
~Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually se lect the vents where the
a ir will flow. To have the air d istr ibution regu­
l ated automatically, press the
IAU TOI button .
~ Adjusting seat heat ing *
Pressing the button switches the seat heating
on at the highest sett ing (level 3). The LEDs
indicate the temperature leve l. To reduce the
temperature, press the button again . To
switch the seat heating off , press the button
repeatedly unt il the L ED turns off.
After 10 minutes , the seat heat ing automati­
cally switches from level 3 to level 2.
I @ FRON T I Switch the d efro ster on /off
The windshield and s ide windows are defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible. The max imum amount of air flows
mainly from the vents below the windsh ield.
Recirculation mode switches off . T he tempera­
ture is controlled a utomat ica lly.

The !AUTO ! button switches the defroster off.
lmn R EAR ! Switching rear window heater
on /off
T he rea r window heater on ly operates when
the engine is running. It sw itches off auto ­
matically after a few m inutes, depending on
the outs ide temperature .
T o p reven t the re ar window heater from
switching off automatically, press and hold
the
l oo REARI b utton for more than 2 seconds .
This remains stored until the ign ition is
switched off .
Air vents
You can open and close the center and rear air
vents using the thumbwheels . The levers ad­
just the direction of the airflow from the
vents.
In vehicles with a 3 -zone deluxe automatic cli­
mate control system*, you can adjust the air
temperature in the rear by turning the thumb­
whee l toward the red side to make it warmer
or toward t he blue side to make it coo ler.
A WARNING ...
- Do not use the recircu lation for extended
pe riods of time . The windows could fog
up since no fresh a ir can enter the vehi­
cle .
If the windows fog up, press the air
reci rculation button aga in immediately
to switch off the air reci rc u lation func­
tion or se lect defrost .
- I ndividuals w ith red uced sensitivity to
pa in or temperature cou ld deve lop burns
when using t he seat heating function. To
red uce the risk of injury, these individu­
a ls shou ld not use seat heating.

To avoid damage to the heat ing e lements
i n the seats, do not kneel on the seats or
place heavy loads on a small area of the
seat.

The seat heating only works when the seat
detects body weight on it. P lacing objects
on the seat cou ld create enough we ight to
sw itch seat heat ing on.
Setup
The basic climate control settings can be ad­
justed in the radio or MM!* .

Automatic recirculation*
When switched on, automatic recirculation
controls the recirculation mode automatica lly.
If the windows fog up, press the

When synch roniza tion is switched on, the
same settings are applied to both the drive r
and front passenger, except for the seat heat­ ing/ventilation*. Synchronization switches off
when you ad just the settings on the front pas­
senger's side.
You can a lso switch synchronization on by
press ing and ho lding the knob on the driver's
side.

Manually adjustable steering wheel
The steering wheel position is fully adjustable
up and down and forward and back.

adaptive equipment is available to help yo u
reach the peda ls and increase the distance
from the steering whee l.

face , the suppleme nta l dr iver's a irbag
cannot provide as much protection in an
accident . Always make sure that the
steer ing whee l is a ligned with your
ches t.
- Always h old the ste ering whee l w ith your
hands at t he 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
tions to redu ce the risk of persona l injury
if the driver's airbag dep loys .
- N ever hold the stee ring wheel at the 12
o' clock posi tion or wi th your hands in si de
the stee rin g wheel rim or on t he steering
wheel h ub. Holding the steering whee l
the wrong way can cause se rious injuries
to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er 's airbag deploys.

Sw itching the i gni tion on /off
If you wou ld like to switch the ignition on
without starting the engine, follow these
steps :
• Inse rt the key into the ignition lock .
• Press the key briefly
wi thout pressing the
c lutch pedal (for man ual transmissions) or
the brake peda l (for automatic transmis­
s ions) .
• To sw itch the igni tion off, press the key
again.
When starting the engine, major e lectr ical
loads are swi tched off temporarily .
You can on ly remove the key with the ignition
switched off.
I f the engine should not sta rt immediately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time. Repeat starting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never remove the ign ition key from the
ignition look whi le the vehicle is moving.
Otherw ise, the steering lock cou ld sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be started or electr ica l
equipment such as the power w indows
c ou ld be operated. This can lead to seri­
o us inj ury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance u nattended in the vehicle . The
doors c an be locked using the remo te
transmitter, preventing people from es­
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an eme rgency. Depending
on the time of year, people inside the ve- h
icle can be exposed to very high or very
low temperatu res.
@ Note
Avoid high eng ine rpm, f ull throttle and
heavy engine loads unti l the engine has
r eached operating tempe rat ure -other­
wise you risk eng ine damage.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run w hile parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately. This
reduces unnecessary emissions.

-After starting a cold engine, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause the oil pressure must first bu ild up
in the hydraulic valve ad justers. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the veh icle with the ignition
switched on, the ignit ion w ill switch off
afte r a certain per iod of t ime . P lease
no te that electrical eq uipment such as
exterior ligh ts will sw itch off as well
when that happens .

Starting the vehicle with the emergency
key
Applies to vehicles: with ignition lock
You can use the emergency key as an ignition
key in an emergency.

Ste ering lock
The steering locks when yo u remove the ig ni­
tion key . The lo cked steering helps prevent ve ­
hicle theft .
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unus ual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the veh icle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period .
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine before the ve­
hicle has come to a comp lete stop. The
full funct ion of the brake booster and the
power steering is not guaranteed . You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary. Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually wo uld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries.
- For safety reasons , you should always
pa rk your vehicle w ith the selector lever
in P . Otherwise, the vehicle could inad ­
verten tly roll away .
- The radiator fan can continue to run fo r
up to 10 minutes even after you have
turned off the engine and removed the ignition key. The radiator fan can a lso
turn on again if the engine coo lant heats
up because of intense sunlight or heat
build-up in the engine compartment.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle. Otherw ise, the
engine could be started or electrical
equipment such as the power windows
could be operated . This can lead to seri­
ous injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preven ting people from es­
caping from the veh icle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depending
on the time of year, peop le inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very high or very

fere with the radio s ignal.
Pre ss brak e pedal to start engine
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal to start the eng ine in a vehicle
with an automat ic transm iss ion.

clutch pedal to start the engine in a veh icle

This message appears when attempting to
start the engine if the selector lever for the
automatic t ransmission is not in the P or N
position. The engine can on ly be started with
the selector in these posi tions.
Is the ke y in the vehicl e?
This message appears if the master key is re­
moved from the vehicle with the eng ine run­
n ing .
If the master key is no longer in the ve ­
hi cle, yo u cannot swit ch o n the ignition after
stopping the engine and you also cannot star t
the engine again. Moreover, yo u cannot lock
the vehicle from the outside with the key .
Shift to P otherwise vehicle ca n roll away .

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome ­
chanical parking brake . The parking b rake is
designed to p revent the veh icle from rolling
u nintentionally and replaces the hand b rake .
I n add ition to the normal functions of a tradi ­
tional hand brake, the electromechanical
parking brake provides vario us convenience
and safe ty f unct io ns.
When starting from rest
- The integral start ing ass ist helps you when
driving by automat ically releasi ng the park ­

The starting assist function ensures that the
parking broke is released automatically upon starting.

.. When you start to drive as usua l, the park­
ing brake is automatically released and your
vehicle begins to move.
When stopping at a traffic signal or stopping
in city traffic on vehicles with an automatic
transmission, the parking brake can be ap­
plied. The vehicle does not have to be held
with the footbrake. The park ing brake elimi­
nates the tendency to creep with a drive range
engaged. As soon as you dr ive off as usual,
the park ing brake is released automatically
and the veh icle starts to move .
Starting on slopes
When starting on inclines, the start ing ass ist
prevents the vehicle from unintentionally roll­
ing back. The braking force of the parking
b rake is not released until sufficient dr iving
fo rce has been bu ilt up at the whee ls.
(D Tips
For safety reasons, the park ing brake is re­
leased automatically only when the dr iv­
er 's sa fety belt is engaged in the bu ck le.
Starting off with a trailer
To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an
incline, do the following:
.. Keep the switch@c::> page 76, fig. 78
pulled and depress the accelerator . The
parking b rake stays applied and prevents
the vehi cle from rolling backward.
.. You can release the switch @once you are
s u re that yo u are developing enough driving
force at the wheels by depressing the accel ­
erator.
Depending on the weight o f the rig (vehicle
and trai ler) and the severity of the incline, you
may roll backwards as you start . Yo u can pre­
vent roll ing backwards by holding the parking
brake switch @pulled out and accelerating -
just as you would when starting on a hill with
a conventional hand brake.
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake sys­
tem fails or locks .
.. In an emergency, pull the switch@
c::> page 76, fig. 78 and continue to pull it to
slow your vehicle down with the parking brake .
.. As soon as you release the switch @or ac-
celerate, t he b ra ki ng pro cess stops.
If you pull the switch @and hold it above a
speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h), the emergen­
cy bra king funct ion is initiated. The ve hicl e is
braked at all fou r whee ls by activating the hy­
draulic brake sys tem. The brake performance
is similar to making an emergency stop
c::> ,&.
In order not to a ct ivate the eme rgency brak­
ing by mis take, an audib le warning tone (buz­
zer) so unds when the switch @is pulled. As
soon as the switch @ is released, or the acce l­
erator pedal is depressed, emergency braking
stops.
A WARNING ,-
Emergency braking should only be used in
an emergency, when the normal foot brake
has fa iled or the brake pedal is obstructed .
Using the par king brake to pe rform eme r­
gency b raking will s low your veh icle down
as if you had made a full brake application.
The laws of phys ics cannot be suspended
even with ESC and its associated compo ­
nents (ABS, ASR, EDS). In corners and
when road or weathe r cond itions are bad,
a full brake application can cause the vehi ­
cle to skid or the rear end to break away­
risking an accident.
Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep
your driving speed below a set speed limit.
T he speed warn ing system warns if the driver
exceeds a p reviously sto red max imum speed.
A warning tone w ill sound as soon as the
