- Never use the hexagona l socket in the han­
dle of the sc rew driver to loosen o r tighten
t h e whee l bolts .
- If a w heel bo lt is very tight, you may find it
easier to loosen by ca refully push ing down
on the en d of the wh ee l bol t wren ch with
one f oot only. As you d o so, hold on t o th e
ca r to keep you r balan ce and take c are not
to slip .

Do not lift the vehicle by the sil l. Position the
vehicle jack only at the designated lifting points on the sill. Otherwise, your vehicle will
be damaged.
Taking the wheel off/installing the spare
tire
Follow these instructions step -by -step for chang­
ing the wheel .

After you have loosened a ll wheel bolts and
raised the vehicle
off the ground, remove and re­
place the whee l as follows:
Removing the wheel
.,. Remove the topmost wheel bolt completely
with the
hexagonal socket in the screwdriver
hand le (vehicle too l kit)

aside on a
clean surface.
.,. Screw the threaded end of the
alignment pin
from the tool kit hand-tight into the empty bolt
hole

Putting on the spare tire
""Push the spare tire over the alignment pin.
.,. Screw on the wheel bolts and tighten them
slightly using the hexagona l socket .
.,. Remove the alignment pin and insert and tight­
en the remaining wheel bolt slightly like the
rest .
.,. Turn the jack handle counter -clockwise to lower
the vehicle until the jack is fully released .
.,. Use the wheel bolt wrench to tighten all wheel
bolts firmly

centered .

The hexagonal socket makes it easier to remove
the wheel bolts from the rim. Care should be tak­
en when removing the reversib le blade.
CD Note
When removing or installing the whee l, the
rim could h it the brake rotor and damage the
rotor. Work carefully and have a second per-
son to he lp you.

- When mounting tires with unidirectional
tread design
make sure the tread pattern is
pointed the right way

-The wheel bolts should be clean and easy to
turn. Check for dirt and corrosion on the
mating surfaces of both the wheel and the
hub. Remove all dirt from these surfaces be­
fore remounting the wheel.
- Do not use the hexagonal socket in the
screwdriver handle to loosen or tighten the
wheel bolts .

Bulbs
Replacing bulbs
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dealer replace any bulbs for
you .
It is becoming increasingly more and more diffi­
cult to replace vehicle light bulbs since in many
cases , other parts of the car must first be re­
moved before you are ab le to get to the bulb .
This applies especially to the light bulbs in the
front of you r ca r which you can only reach
through the engine compartment .
Sheet metal and bulb holders can have sharp
edges that can cause ser ious cuts, parts must be

correct ly taken apart and then properly put back
together to help prevent breakage of parts and
long term damage from water that can enter
housings that have not been properly resealed.
For your safety, we recommend that you have
your authorized Audi dea ler replace any bulbs for
you, since your dealer has the proper tools, the
correct bulbs and the expertise.
Gas discharge lamp s (Xenon lights)*:
Due to the high electr ical voltage, have the bulbs
replaced by a qualified technician . Head lights
with Xenon light are identified by the high volt­
age sticker.
A WARNING
Changing Xenon lamps without the necessary
equipment can cause serious personal injury.
- Bulbs are pressurized and can explode when
being changed . Potential risk of injury!
- On vehicles equipped with gas discharge
bu lbs (Xenon light) * life -threatening injuries
can result from improper handling of the
high -vo ltage portions of such lamps!
-On ly your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop shou ld change the bulbs in
gas discharge lamps. There are parts with
sharp edges on the openings and on the
bulb holders that can cause serious cuts . If
you are uncertain about what to do, have
the wor k performed by an autho rized Audi
dealer or qualified workshop. Serious per­
sonal injury may result from improperly per­
formed work .
(D Tips
-If you st ill prefer to replace the light bulbs
yourself, be aware that the eng ine compart­
ment is a hazardous area to work

- Please note that the procedure for connect­
i ng a jumper cable as desc ribed above ap ­
plies specifica lly to the case of yo ur vehicle
being jump started . W hen you a re g iving a
j u mp sta rt to another vehicl e, do
not co n­
ne ct the negative ( -) cab le to the negative
( -) t erminal o n the di scharged battery @

nega tive ( -) cab le to either a solid me tal
com ponent that is f irm ly bolted to the en ­
gine block o r to t he engine bloc k itself. I f
the battery that is being charged does not
vent to the outside , escap ing battery gas
could ignite and exp lode!
Towing with a tow truck
General hints
Y o ur Audi requires special handling for towing.
The fo llow ing information is to be used by com ­
mercia l tow truck operato rs who know how to op­
erate their eq uipment safe ly .
- Never tow your Audi, towing will cause dam­
age to the engine and transmiss ion.
- Never wrap the safety chains or winch cables
around the brake lines .
- To pre vent unnecessary damage, your Audi
must be transported with a flat bed truck.

- To load the vehicle on to the flat bed , use the
towing loop found in the vehicle tools and at·
tach to the front or rear anchorage

A WARNING
A veh icle being towed is not safe f or passe n­
gers . Never a llow anyone to ride in a ve hicle
be ing towed, fo r any reason .

Do not install the front towing loop until it is
needed .

Lifting with workshop hoist and with floor
jack

points illustrated.

A WARNING
- To reduce t he risk of serious injury and vehi­
cle damage .
- Always lift the vehicle only at the specia l
workshop hoist and f loor jack lift points il­
l ustrat ed

- Failure to lift the veh icle a t these points
could cause the veh icle to tilt o r fall from
a lift if th ere is a cha nge in vehi cle we ight
dis tribu tio n and balance. T his m ight hap­
p en, for example, whe n he avy compone nts
s uch as the en gine block or tran smission
are removed .
- W hen removing he avy componen ts like
these, anchor vehicle to hoist or ad d corre ­
spond ing weights to ma intain the center of
grav ity . Otherwise, the vehicle might ti lt o r
slip off the ho ist , causing se rious persona l
in jury .
(D Note
-Be aware of the following points before lift ­
ing the vehicle:
- The veh icle should never be lifted or
jacked up from underneath the engine oil pan, the transmis sion housing, the front
or rear axle or the body side members .
This could lead to serious damage .
- To avoid damage to the underbody or
chas sis frame , a rubber pad must be in­
serted between the floor ja ck and the lift
points.
- Before driving over a workshop hoist,
check that the vehicle weight doe s not
exceed the permissible lifting capacity of
the hoist.
- Before driving over a work shop hoist , en­
sure that the re is sufficient clearance be­
tween the hoist and low parts of the ve­
h icle.

scope of maintenance and repairs which can be
carried out by veh icle owners .

concerns place very strict limits
on the nature of repa irs and adjustments to en­
g ine and transmission parts which an owner can
perform.
Maintenance, adjustments and repairs usua lly re­
qu ire spec ial tools, testing devices and other
equ ipment available to specially trained work­
shop perso nnel in order to assure proper per­
formance, reliab ility and safety of the vehicle and
its many systems.
Improper ma intenance, adjustments and repairs
can impair the operation and reliability of your
vehicle and even void your vehicle warranty .
Therefore, proof of se rv icing in accordance with
the m aintenance schedule may be a condi tion for
upho ld ing a possib le warranty cla im made w ith in
the warranty period .
Above all, operational safety can be adversely af­
fected, creating unnecessary r isks fo r you and
your passengers.
I f in doubt about any servicing, have it done by
your author ized Audi dealer or any prope rly
equ ipped and qua lified workshop. We st rongly
urge you to give your authorized Audi dealer the
opport unity to perform all sched uled mainte­
nance and necessary repairs. Your dealer has the
fac ilities, origina l parts and trained specialists to
keep yo ur vehicle runn ing properly.
P e rforming lim it e d ma inten anc e y ours elf
The fo llowing pages describe a limited number of
proced ures which can be performed on yo ur vehi­
cle with ordinary tools, should the need arise and
trained personne l be unavailable. Before per­
forming any of these procedures, always thor­
oughly read all of the applicable text and careful­
ly follow the instructions g iven . Always rigorously
observe the
W ARNINGS prov ided .

partm ent, always r ead and h eed all WARNING S

ment on page 191.
C o nsum er information
A WARNING
- Ser ious personal injury may occur as a result
of improperly performed maintenance, ad­
justments or repairs.
- Always be extremely careful when work ing
on the vehicle. Always follow commonly ac­
cepted safety practices and general com­ mon sense. Never ris k personal injury.
- Do not attempt any of the maintenance,
checks or repairs descr ibed on the following
pages if you are not fully familia r wi th these
or other procedures w ith respect to the vehi­
cle, or a re unce rtain how to proceed .
- Do not do any work without the proper tools
a nd eq uipment. Have the necessary work
done by your authorized Audi dealer or any
properly equipped and qualified workshop.
- The engine compa rtment o f any motor vehi­
cle is a potentially hazardous area. Neve r
reach into the area around or touch the radi­
ator fan. It is temperature controlled and
can switch on suddenly - even when the en­
g ine is off and the ignition key has been re­
moved. The rad iator fan switches on auto­
mat ically when the coo lant reaches a certain
temperature and will continue to run unt il
the coolant temperature d rops.
- Always remove the ign ition key befo re any­
one gets under the vehicle.
- Always support your veh icle with safety
stands if it is necessary to work underneath
the vehicle. The jack supplied w ith the vehi ­
cle is no t adequ ate for this purpose and
could collapse caus ing serious personal in­
jury.
- If you m ust wor k underneath t he vehicle
with the wheels on the ground, a lways make
sure the vehicle is on level ground, that the
wheels are a lways secure ly blocked and that
the engine cannot be started.
- Always make sure the transmission se lector
lever (automatic transmiss ion) is in "P"
(Park position) or Neutral (manua l transm is-
sion) and the park brake is firmly applied. .,.
