Important information concerning vehicle operation with Adaptive
Cru ise Control is shown in display area @. T he desired speed you set
is indicated in the speedometer (L ED lights around the edge).

The des ired speed set by the driver is displayed by a red LED.
If the desired speed was set between two lines o n the speedometer
using the
[ SET ! button, the two closes t light em itting diodes will
come on~ fig. 115 .
The system allows on ly speeds to be set between 20 to 95 mph (30
to 150 km/h) to be set. This speed range is fa int ly ill umina ted in the
speedometer (L ED lights) .

and that no moving veh icle has been detected with in range of the
radar sensor up ahead in your lane of travel. The set speed is main-

Some vehicles moving up ahead in your lane of travel are difficult to
detect, for example two-wheeled vehicles, vehicles with high ground
clearance, loads sticking out the back . Vehicles like this are often
detected late or in some situations not at all. •

If a vehicle that has been detected by ACC exits the highway or sheers
out into the neighboring travel lane, and there is a stationary vehicle
ahead of that vehicle, ACC will not detect or react to that stationary

Signal lights are built into both outside mirrors=> fig. 129. The signal

lane and the signal light on the right outs ide mirror assists when
moving over into the right lane.
Th e signa l light comes on to tell you that side ass ist has detected a
vehicle on that side and that the position of this other ve hicle should
be taken into account if yo u were to change lanes. This is called the
inform ational stage signa l=> page 139 . T he informational stage
signa l is designed so that you not ice it on ly when you are looking in
the outside mirror.
When you activate the turn signal and side assist detects a vehicle in
a notab le location, the correspond ing signal on the outside mirror
flashes briefly and brightly several times. This is the
ale rt stage

A vehicle approach ing slow ly- in the left -hand lane for example -was
detected by the sensors . Because of the small difference in speed and
the conside rable d istance from your vehicle, the signal on the outside
mirror will not light up=>

@ Informational stage signal light s up
The distance between your veh icle and that of the slowly approach ing
vehicle has narrowed. The informational stage signal on the outside
m irror lig hts up.
As soon as the difference in speed and distance is registered as
notable if you we re to change la nes, a sig nal on the m irror lights up.
Side ass ist wi ll signal at the latest when a detected vehicle enters
your "b lind spot" .
@ Alert stage signal flashes
If you activate your turn signa l in drivi ng situa tion @, the signa l light
briefly flashes repeatedly. Side assist is alerting you of a vehicle t hat
you may not have no tic ed.
[ i ] Tips
• T he faste r a vehicle approaches from the rear, the soone r the
signal on the outs ide mirror lights up. Side assist will signal, at the
latest, when a detected vehicle enters your "blind spot".
• When veh icles approach very quickly, chang ing lanes can be
dangerous even if the s ignal on the outside mi rror does not light up. •

General information
Side assist has limits and cannot detect vehicles under all road and
weather conditions . Please remember system limitations and n ever
re ly on the system, especially when :
• driving through curves=>
page 143,
• lanes are of different widths=> page 143. •

When driving through curves
Side assist cannot detect vehicles in curves with a turning radius of
less than 328 feet (100 m).
When driving through a curve, it is possible that side assist may
register a vehicle two lanes over, and the signal on the outside mirror
will light up.•

Side assist's detection area is designed to cover lanes of standard
w idth to the left and rig ht of your travel lane, depending on whether
you drive in the center of your lane or closer to the edge.
If you drive in narrow lanes, side assist's detection area may also
include other lanes -especially if you tend to drive on t he edge of your
lane => fig. 137. Under these conditions, vehicl es can also be
detected that are two lanes away, and side assist then could switch
between the informationa l and warning stage signals .
When driving in very wide lanes, vehicles in the adjacent lane may not
be detected because they are not inside the detection area .•

Automatic transmission -_______________ ____.
(]] Tips
• When you shift into the next lower gea r, the tra nsmission w ill
downs hift o nly when there is no possibi lity of ov er-revving the
eng ine.
• When the kickdown comes on, the transmission will s hift down to
a lower gear, depending on vehicle a nd e ng ine speeds.
• tiptronic ® is inoperative when the transm ission is in the fai l-safe
mode .•

The shift buttons on the steering wheel allo w the driver to
shift gears manually.

Automatic transmission malfunction 0
I n the event of a sys tem malfu nction, the automatic transm issio n
switches to emergency ope ra tion mode .
Gearbox malfunction: you can continue driving

or other qualified workshop at the next opportunity .
Gearbox malfunction: you can continue driving (limited
fun ct ionality )
There is a ser ious system malfunction:

• It is not poss ible to restart the engine if it has bee n sw itched off .
• C ontinuing to d rive cou ld resu lt in subsequent d amage.

Driving the multitronic ®
The gear ratio is continuously adapted to vehicle speed
and load.
Starting th e engin e
- The selector lever must be in Nor P.
Sta rting off
- Press and hold the brake pedal.

- Press and hold the release button in the selector lever
handle and move the selector lever from

- Wait briefly until the transmission has shifted (you will feel a slight movement).
- Remove your foot from the brake pedal and accelerate

- Shift only between D and R when the vehicle is at a full
stop and the engine is running at idle speed.

Stopping
- Press and hold the brake pedal until the vehicle has come
to a complete stop.
- Keep the brake pedal depressed so that the vehicle cannot
roll forward or backward while it is idling

do not depress the accelerator pedal to rev

Parking
- Press and hold the brake pedal until the vehicle has come
to a complete stop .
- Set the parking brake firmly=>
page 114, "Parking".
- Press and hold the release button in the selector lever handle, move the selector lever into
P and then let go of
the release button=>& .
Your vehicle is equipped with a st ar ting ass ist that allows for easier
sta rting on inclines. The system is activa ted when the brake peda l is
depressed for a
few se con ds. After releasing the brake pedal, the
brake power is he ld for a moment to prevent the vehicle from rolling
back when starting .
The selector lever must be in Nor
P. If one of the driving positions is
engaged a safety switch will prevent the engine from be ing started .

Before you move the selector lever from the P position, you must
always apply the brake pedal before and while depressing the button
in the handle of the selecto r lever .

when the driver presses the brake pedal on a downhill gradient . This
makes use of the braking effect of the engine w ithout the need to
shift down manually .
If you are driving in hills and mounta ins, the transmission will contin­
uously adjust the gear ratio to the road grade. If you press the brake
pedal when driving downhill, the transmission will downshift auto­
matically. This increases the brak ing effect of the engine.
If the cruise control is on when you are traveling downhill, the trans­
mission will automatica lly select a lower gear ratio in order to main­
tain the set vehicle speed. Th is will cause the engine speed to
increase. •

tiptronic ® manual shift program
Using the manual shi~ program (tiptronic®) you can
manually shift between seven pre-programmed gear
ratios (transmission positions) .

Switching to manual shift program
- Push the selector lever to the right from D. As soon as the
transmission has switched over, the selected gear appears
in the display ~ fig . 150.
To upshift
- Push the selector lever forward to the plus position

To downshift
- Push the lev er to the minus position Q.
When accelerating, the transmission will automatically shift into the
next higher gear before the engine reaches the maximum RPM .
When accelerating, if you apply a light throttle, the tiptronic ® will
automatically shift into the next higher gear to save fuel. If you apply
a heavy throttle, the transmiss ion wi ll stay in gear engaged until near
maximum RPM are reached, or until the driver manually shifts into a
higher gear.
If you take your foot off the accelerator pedal when driv ing down a
steep incline, the tiptronic ® will downshift from the selected gear
into the next lower gear based on road speed and engine RPM. The
automatic downshifting is interrupted as soon as you apply throttle
again.

Emergency release for selector lever
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selector lever can
be released in an emergency.

The emergency release is located under the insert for the
ashtray.
- Slide open the cover for the ashtray .
- Grasp the ashtray insert~ fig. 152 by the recesses on
both sides and pull it upward and out.
- Now you can see a small cover in the ashtray holder.
- Release and remove this cover from the ashtray holder.

-Using a screwdriver or a similar tool, press down on the
screw in the middle of the ashtray holder , which is now
accessible, and hold it down~ fig. 153 .
- Now press the interlock and move the selector lever to the
N position.
The selector lever can only be moved from the P position if the igni­
tion key is in the lock and the ignition is turned on. If the vehicle has
to be pushed or towed if the power supply fails (e.g. battery is
discharged), the selector lever must be moved to the
N position using
the emergency locking device. •

- Turn the steering wheel until the orange orientation lines
(D appear in the parking spot=> page 164, fig. 158 . Use
the markings @to help you estimate the distance from an
obstacle. Each marking presents to 3 f t (1 m) . The blue
area represen ts a n extension of the vehi cle's o utline by
approximately 16 ft (5 m) to the rear .
- While driving in reverse gear, adjust the steering wheel ang le to fit the parking space with the aid of the orange

• Low obstacles a lready signaled by a wa rning c an disappear from
the sys tem's de te ct ion range as they are app roached and will no t
conti nue to be signaled . Objects such as barrier cha ins, trailer draw
bars, thin painted ve rtica l poles or fences may not be detected by the
system , posing risk of damage.
• In the MMI display , the direc tion o f travel o f the vehicle rear is
represen ted depend ing on the steering whee l angle. The vehicle front
swings out more than the veh icle rear . Maintain plenty of distance
from an obstacle so that your outside mirror or a corner of your
vehicle does not collide with any obstacles -danger of accident !•
