Driving safety
Basics
Safe driving habits
Please remember -safety first!
The individua l safety features of your vehicle can
work together as a system to help protect you
and your passengers in a wide range of accidents.
These features cannot work as a system if they
are not always correctly adjusted and correctly
used .
This chapter contains important informat ion,
tips, instruct ions and warn ings that you need to
read and observe for your own safety, the safety
of you r passengers and others . We have summarÂ
ized here w hat you need to know about safety
be lts, a irbags, child restra ints as well as child
safety. Yo ur safety is for us
priority number 1. Al Â
ways observe the information and warnings in
this section -for your own safety as we ll as that
of your passengers.
The information in this section applies to all
model versions of your vehicle . Some of the feaÂ
tures described in this sections may be standard
equipment on some models, or may be optional
equ ipment on others. If you are not sure, ask
your author ized Audi dealer.
A WARNING
- Always make sure that you follow the inÂ
structions and heed the WARNINGS in th is
Manua l.
It is in your interest and in the inÂ
te rest of your passengers .
-
-Always keep the complete Owner's LiteraÂ
tu re in you r A udi when you lend or se ll you r
vehicle so that this import ant information
will always be available to the d river and
passengers.
- Always keep the Owner 's lite rature h andy so
that you can find it easily if you have quesÂ
tions .

Important things to do before driving
Safety is everybody's job! Vehicle and occupant
safety always depends on the informed and careÂ
ful driver .
For your safety and the safety of your passenÂ
gers,
bef ore dri ving alw ays:
.. Make sure that a ll lights and signals are operatÂ
ing correctly .
.. Make sure that the tire pressure is correct.
.. Make sure that all windows are clean and afford
good vis ibility to the outs ide .
.. Sec ure all luggage and othe r items ca refully
¢ page 65, ¢page 63 .
.. Make sure tha t noth ing ca n interfere wi th the
peda ls .
.. Adjust front seat, head restraint and mirrors
correctly for your height.
.. Instruct passengers to adjust the head reÂ
straints according to their he ight.
.. Make sure to use the right child restraint corÂ
rectly to protect
children ¢ page 249, Child
safety .
• Sit proper ly in yo ur seat a nd make sure t hat
your passenge rs do the same
¢ page 54, Seats
and storage.
.. Fasten your sa fety belt and wear it p roperly . Al Â
so instruct your passengers to fasten their safeÂ
ty be lts properly
¢ page 219 .
What impairs driving safety?
Safe driving is directly related to the condition of
the vehicle, the driver as well as the driver's abiliÂ
ty to concentrate on the road without being disÂ
tracted.
The driver is responsib le for the safety of the ve Â
hicle and a ll of its occupants. If your ability to
drive is impa ired, safety risks for everybody in the
vehicle increase and you a lso become a hazard to
everyone else on the road
¢ _&. . Therefore:
.. Do not let yourse lf be distracted by passenge rs
or by using a cellular telephone .
.. NEVER drive when your driving ability is imÂ
paired (by med ications, alcohol, drugs, etc .) .
.. Observe all traffic laws, rules of the road and
speed lim its and plain common sense .

the doors, over or near the area marked
"AIRBAG" on the steering wheel, instruÂ
ment pane l, seat backrests or between
those areas and yourself . These objects
cou ld cause injury in a crash, especially
when the airbags inflate .
-Never recline the front passenge r's seat to
transport objects. Items ca n also move into
the area of the side airbag o r the front airÂ
bag during bra king or in a sudden maneuÂ
ver. Objects near the airbags can become
projectiles and cause in jury, particularly
when the seat is reclined.
A WARNING
T he fine dust created when airbags deploy can
cause breathing problems for people with a
history of asthma or other breathing condiÂ
tions.
-To reduce the risk of breathing problems,
those w ith asthma or other respiratory conÂ
ditions should get fresh air right away by
gett ing out of the veh icle or opening w inÂ
dows or doo rs.
-If you are in a collision in which airbags deÂ
ploy, wash your hands and face with mild
soap and water before eat ing .
-Be careful not to get the dust into your eyes,
or into any cuts or scratches .
-If the residue should get into your eyes,
flush them with water.
Monitoring the
Advanced Airbag System
~ ( USA models )/!{ (Canada models )
Airbag monitoring indicator light
Two separate indicators monitor the function of
the Advanced Airbag System: the airbag moniÂ
toring indicator light and the
PASSENGER AIR

light.
The Advanced Airbag System (including the elecÂ
tron ic control unit, sensor c ircuits and system
~ wir ing) is monitored continuously to make sure
;:::: that it is funct ion ing prope rly whenever the igni-
" ~ tion is on. Each time you switch on the ignition,
~ the airbag monitoring indicator light fl (USA '

models)/EI (Canada models) w ill come on for a
few seconds (se lf diagnostics).
The system must be inspected when the
indicator light
II (USA models)tE,I (Canada
models) :
-does not come on when the ignition is switched
on,
-does not go out a few seconds after you have
sw itched on the ignition, or
-comes on while driving.
If an airbag system malfunction is detec ted, the
indica tor light will come on to serve as a constant
reminder to have the system inspected immediÂ
ately .
If a malfu nction occurs that turns the front airÂ
bag on the passenger side off, the
PASSENGER

light will come on and stay on
whenever the ignition is on.
A WARNING
An airbag system that is not functioning propÂ
erly cannot prov ide supplemental protect ion
i n a fronta l crash.
-If the airbag indicator light ¢ page 23
comes when the veh icle is being used, have
the system inspected immediately by your
author ized Audi dealer.
It is poss ible that
the airbag will inflate when it is not supÂ
posed to, or w ill not inf late when it should.

Repair, care and disposal of the airbags
Parts of the a irbag system are installed at many
d ifferent p laces on your Aud i. Install ing, removÂ
i n g, servic ing o r repa iring a part in an area of the
ve hicle can damage a pa rt of an airbag system
and prevent that system from working properly
in a co llision .
There are some important t hings yo u have to
know to make sure th at the effect iveness of the
system wi ll not be impaired and that dis carded
components do not cause injury or pollute the
environment .
A WARNING
Improper care, serv icing and repair proceÂ
dures can increase the r isk of personal injury
and death by preventing an airbag from deÂ
ploying when needed or deploying an airbag
unexpectedly:
-
-Never cover, obstruct, or change the steerÂ
i ng wheel horn pad or a irbag cover or the inÂ
strument pa ne l or mod ify them in any way.
-Never attach any objects such as cup holders
o r te lephone mount ings to the surfaces covÂ
er ing the ai rbag units.
-For cleaning the horn pad or instrument
pane l, use on ly a soft, dry cloth or one moisÂ
tened with plain water. Solvents or cleaners cou ld damage the airbag cover or change
the stiffness or st rengt h of the materia l so
t h at the airbag cannot dep loy and protect
properly.
-Never repair, adjust, or change any parts of
the airbag system.
-All work on the stee ring wheel, i nstr ument
pane l, front seats or electrical system (in Â
cluding the installation of audio equipment,
ce llular telephones and CB rad ios, etc.)
must be performed by a qualified technician
240
who has the training and specia l equipment
necessary.
-F or any work on the airbag system, we
strong ly recommend that you see yo ur auÂ
thorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
-Never modify the front b umper or parts of
the vehicle body.
- Always make sure that the side airbag can
inflate w ithout interference:
-Never install seat covers or replaceme nt
upholstery ove r the front seatbacks that
have not bee n specific ally app roved by
A udi.
-Neve r use additional seat c ushi ons that
cover the areas where the side airbags in Â
flate.
-Damage to the orig inal seat cove rs o r to
t h e seam in the area of the s ide airb ag
module mus t always be repai red immedi Â
ate ly by an authorized Audi dealer.
-The airb ag sys tem can be act iv a ted only
once . A fter an airbag has in flated, it must
be replaced by an authorized Audi dealer or
qua lified tech nic ian who has the technical
information, train ing and spec ial equ ipment
necessary.
-The airbag system can be deployed only
once. After an airbag has been deployed, it
must be replaced with new rep lacement
parts des igned and approved espec ially for
your Aud i model version. Replacement of
comp lete airbag systems or airbag compoÂ
nents must be perfo rmed by qualified workÂ
shops only. M ake sure that any a irb ag se rv Â
ice act ion is entered in your Audi Warranty
& Maintenance booklet under AIRBAG RE Â
PLACEMENT RECORD.
-For safety reasons in severe accidents, the
a lter nator and starter a re separated from
the vehicle battery with a pyrotechnic circu it
interrupter.
-Wo rk on the pyrotechnic c ircuit inte rruptÂ
e r must o nly be perfo rmed by a qua lified
dealer
-r isk of an a cciden t!
-If the vehicle or the c ircuit inte rr u pte r is
sc rapped, all appli cable safety p recau tions
mus t be followed.

The Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle de Â
tects the presence of an infant or child in a child restraint on the front passenger seat using the
weight-sensing mat in the seat cushion and the
sensor be low the safety belt latch on the front
passenger seat that measures the tension on the
safety belt.
The weight-sensing mat measures total weight
of the ch ild and the child safety seat and a ch ild
blanket on the front passenger seat. The weight
on the front passenger seat is related to the deÂ
sign of the ch ild restraint and its "footprint", the
size and shape of the bottom of t he chi ld reÂ
str aint as it sits on the seat. The weight of a child
restraint and its "footprint" vary for d ifferent
kinds o f child restraints and for the different
models of the same kind of child restraint ofÂ
fered by child restraint manufact urers.
The weight ranges for the individua l types,
makes and models of child restraints that the
NHTSA has specified in the Safety Standard to Â
gether with the weight ranges of typical infants
and typical 1 year-o ld child have been stored in
the control unit of the Advanced A irbag System.
When a child restraint is being used on the front passenger seat with a typ ical 1 year-old child, the
Advanced A irbag System compares the we ight
measured by the we ight sensi ng mat w ith the in Â
formation stored in the electronic contro l uni t.
The electron ic control u nit also registers the tenÂ
sion on the front passenger safety belt. The tenÂ
sion on the safety belt for the front passenge r
seat will be d iffe ren t fo r an ad ult who is p roperly
using the safety belt as compared to t he tension
on the belt when it is used to attach a c hild re Â
straint to the seat . The sensor below the latch for
the safety belt for the front seat passenger
measures the tens ion on the belt. The input from
this sensor is then used w ith the weight to "deÂ
cide", whether there is a child restra int w ith a
typical 1 year-old child on the front passenge r
seat and w hethe r or not the airbag must be
turned off.
Ch ild saf ety
Child restraints and Advanced Airbags
Regardless of the c hild restraint t hat yo u use,
make s ure tha t it has been ce rt ified to mee t Safe Â
ty Standards an d has been cert ified by its man uÂ
f act urer for use with an airbag. A lways be sure
t h at the c hild restraint is properly installed at
one of the rear seating positions. If in exceptionÂ
al circumstances you must use it on the front
passenger seat, careful ly read all of the informaÂ
t ion on child safety and Advanced A irbags and
heed all of the applicable WARNINGS. Make cerÂ
ta in that the ch ild restraint is co rrectly recogÂ
nized by the weight-sensing mat ins ide the front
passenge r seat, that the front passenge r airbag
is turned off and that the a irbag sta tus is always
correctly signaled by the

light .
M any types and models of child restra in ts h ave
been avai lab le over the years, new models are in Â
t roduced regu larly incorporating new and imÂ
proved designs and older models are taken out of
production. Child restraints are not standardized.
Child restra ints of the same type typically have
different weights and sizes and different 'footÂ
prints,' the size and shape of the bottom of the
ch ild rest raint that sits on the seat, when they
are installed on a vehicle seat. These d iffe rences

New tires or wheels
Audi recommends having all work
on tires or wheels pe rformed by
an authorized Audi dealer or auÂ
thorized Audi Service Facility .
T hese facilities have the proper
knowledge and are equipped with
the required tools and replace Â
ment parts.
.,. New tires do not yet have the
optimum gripping properties. Drive carefully and at moderate
speeds fo r the first 350 miles
(500 km) with new tires .
.,. Use tires of the same construc Â
tion, size (rolling circumference)
and as close to the same tread pattern as poss ible on all four
wheels .
290
.,.Do not replace tires individually .
At least replace both tires on the
same axle at the same time.
.,. Audi recommends that you use
Audi Original Tires. If you would like to use different tires, please
note that the tires may perform
differently even if they are the
same
size¢ ,&.
.,. If you would like to equip your
vehicle with a tire/rim combina Â
tion that is different from what
was installed at the factory, conÂ

The spare tire* is different from
the regular tires installed on the
vehicle - for example, if winter
tires or wide tires are installed -
so only use the spare tire* tempo Â
rarily in case of emergency and
drive carefully while it is in use. It
should be replaced with a regular
tire as soon as possible.
All four wheels must be equipped
with tires that are the same brand and have the same construction
and tread pattern so that the
drive system is not damaged by
different tire speeds. For this rea-

chains after driving a few feet, if necessary. FolÂ
low the instructions from the manufacturer.
~ Note the maximum speed of 30 mph (SO km/
h). Note the loc al regulations.
Use of snow chains is only permitted with certain
rim/tire combinations due to technical reasons.
Check with an authori zed Audi dealer or authorÂ
ized Audi Service Facility to see if you may use
snow chains .
You must remove the snow chains on roads withÂ
out snow. Otherwise, you could impair driving
ability and damage the tires.
A WARNING
Using incorrect snow chains or installing snow
chains incorrectly can result in loss of vehicle
control, which increases the risk of an acciÂ
dent.
0 Note
-Snow chains can damage the rims/wheel
covers* if the chains come into direct con·
tact with them . Remove the wheel covers*
first. Use coated snow chains.
-Using snow chains that add more than 0.4
inch (10.5 mm) of height can severely damÂ
age the wheel housings and other vehicle
components.
-Do not install and use snow chains if there is
a malfunction in the adaptive air suspenÂ
sion, because the vehicle height will be very
low. If you drive with snow chains anyway,
the wheel housings and other vehicle com ponents can be severely damaged.
@ Tips
When using snow chains, it may be useful to
switch on sport mode
¢ page 128.
Low-profile tires
Appl ies to: ve hicles w ith low-profile tires
Your vehicle is equipped with low-profile tires* at
the factory . Compared to other tire/rim combinaÂ
tions, low-profile tires offer a wider tread surface
and a larger rim diameter with shorter tire side-
Wheels
walls. This results in an agile driving style. HowÂ
ever, it may reduce the level of comfort and inÂ
crease road noise when driving on roads in poor
condition.
Low-profile tires can become damaged more
quickly than standard tires when driving over
large bumps, potholes, manhole covers, speed
bumps and curbs. Therefore, it is particularly imÂ
portan t to maintain the correct tire pressure
¢ page 293.
To reduce the risk of damage to the tires and
rims, drive very carefully on poor roads.
Check your wheels regularly every 2,000 mi
(3,000 km) for damage. For example, check for
bulges/cracks on the tires or deformations/
cracks on the rims.
After a heavy impact or damage, have the tires
and rims inspected or replaced immediately by
an authorized Audi dealer or authori zed Audi
Service Facility.
Low-profile tires can wear out faster than standÂ
ard tires.
Summer tires are not suitable for cold weather,
snow or black ice. If you are driving in these conÂ
ditions, use winter or all season tires
¢ page 298.
Uniform tire quality grading
-Tread wear
-Traction AA AB C
