Checking and Filling
(D Note
Never drive your vehicle until the fuel tank is
completely empty. The irregular supply of
fuel can cause m isfiring. Gasoline cou ld enter
the exhaust system and damage the catalyt ic
converter.

The f uel fi ller door is unlocked or locked by the
central lock ing system.
Opening the fuel cap
• Presson the left s ide of the fuel filler door to
open

• Unscrew the tank cap counterclockw ise.
• Place the cap from above on the open fue l filler
door

Clo sing th e fu el cap
• Screw the tank cap on to the r ight on the filler
neck until it cannot turn any farther .
• Close the fuel filler door and then press on the
left side until it latches.

Once the pump nozzle switches off, the fuel tank
is "full". Do not fill the tank more. Otherwise the
expans ion space in the tank w ill be filled.
The correct fuel type for your vehicle can be
fo und on a label located on the inside of the fuel
filler door . For additional information on fuel,
see ¢
pag e 268.
The fuel tank capacity of your veh icle is listed in
the
T echn ical Dat a section ¢ page 334.
To avo id fuel spilling or evaporat ing from the fuel
tank always close fue l cap prope rly and com
plete ly. An improper ly closed f uel fi ller cap may
also cause the M IL lamp ¢
page 25 to come on.
A WARNING
Not pay ing attention when fueling or han
dling fuel incorrectly can lead to fires, explo
sions or serious injur ies.
- Fue l ignites easily and can cause serious
burns and other injur ies.
-
- If you do not switch the engine off when fu
eling and/or do not insert the fuel nozzle
completely into the tank open ing, fuel can
leak out or run over. Leaked fuel can ignite
and start a fire .
- Do not use the telephone while fueling . The
electromagnetic rays can cause sparks,
which can ignite fuel vapors and start a fire .
- Do not sit in your vehicle wh ile fueling. If
you must make an exception and enter your
veh icle again while fueling, close the door
a nd touch metal to d ischa rge stat ic elect ric
ity before to uching the f uel no zz le. Static
e lec tricity ca n create spa rks, which ca n ig
n ite vapors when fueling.
- Do not smoke or have an open flame in the
a rea whe n fue lin g you r veh icle or filling a
fue l container because this increases the
risk of an explosion.
- F or your safety, carrying fuel containe rs in
your veh icle is not recommended . Whet her
fu ll or empty, the container can leak and
cause a fire in the event of an accident.
- If you must make an exception and trans
port a fuel container, note the fo llowing:

-Never f ill the fuel container with fuel
while it is in or on the vehicle. Stat ic elec
tr icity is discharged when filling which can
cause the fuel vapors to ignite and in
creases the r isk of an explos ion.
- Always p lace a fuel container on the
ground before fi lling.
- Always hold the fuel nozzle comp letely in
the fuel container when f il li ng .
- If the fuel container is made of metal, the
fuel nozzle must always be in contact with the conta iner when filling it w ith fuel. Th is
prevents static electr ic ity from discharg
ing.
- Never sp ill fuel in the veh icle or the lug
gage compartment. Evaporated fue l is ex
p losive and increases the risk of serio us in
jury or dea th.
- Follow legal requir ements when using,
sto ring and transpor ting fue l contai ners .
- M ake sure the fuel conta iner confo rms to
i nd ust ry st anda rds (ANSI/AS TM F852 -86).

Fuel filler door emergency release
If the central locking system is faulty, the fuel
filler door can be unlocked manually.

T he emergency release mechanism is located be
hind the rig ht side trim pane l in the luggage
compartment . In vehicles with se lective cata lytic
reduction*, remove the vent grille f irst:
.,. Press bo th tabs @¢fig. 254 an d tilt the vent
grilled downward. Yo u can then remove the
grille upwar d .
.,. Loosen the loop¢ fig. 255 from the retainer
and then pull on the loop caref ully

- Do not use force or hurry when changing a
wheel
-you can cause the vehicle to slip off
the jack and cause serious personal injuries .
-Do not loosen the wheel bolts more than
one turn
before you raise the vehicle with
the jack. - You risk an injury.
(D Tips
- Never use the hexagonal socket in the han
dle of the screwdriver to loosen or tighten
the wheel bo lts .
- If a whee l bolt is very tight, you may find it
easier to loosen by carefully push ing down

one foot only . As you do so, hold on to the
car to keep your balance and take care not
to slip .
AB: Raising the vehicle
The vehicle must b e lifted with the jack first be
