- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the engine compartment.
You could burn yourself. Let the engine cool off first so that you cannot hear or
see any steam or engine coolant.
(D Note
- Mounting additional lights or accessories
in front of the air inlets reduces the cool­
i ng effect of the rad iator. At h igh outside
temperatures or high eng ine load, the
engine could overheat.
- The front spo iler has been designed to
proper ly distr ib ute the cooling air when
the veh icle is moving.
If the spoiler is
damaged, this cou ld redu ce the cooling
effect and the engine co uld then over­
heat. Ask yo ur autho rized Aud i de aler f or
assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
If engine R PM drops be low 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area
at the e nd of the sca le ind icates maximum
permissible engine RPM after the break- in pe­
riod. Before reaching this area, move these­
l ector lever to position D/S or ease your foot
off the accelerator peda l.

zone: you could damage your engine! The
beg inning of the red zone varies depend­
ing on the engine.

Some ind icator lights turn on briefly to check
the function of that system when you switch
the ign ition on. These systems are ma rked
with a ../ in the following tables. If one of
these indicator lights does not turn on, there
is a malfunction in that system.

- The yellow oil lev el warn ing indication
l!I requires oil refill or workshop serv­
ice without delay . Do not wait until th e
red oil pressure warning. start s to

D Battery
The .warn ing/ indicator light i llum inates
when you switch on the ignition and must go
out after the eng ine has started.
• Alternator fault : Battery is not being
charged.
If the indicator light turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there is a malfunction in the generator or vehicle electrical system .
Drive to your authori zed A udi dealer or quali­
fied wor kshop immed iate ly . Because the ve hi­
cle battery is discharging, turn off all unnec ­
essary e lectrical equipment such as the radio.
Seek professiona l assistance if the battery
charge level is too low.

charged while driving .
If the indica to r ligh t turns on and the mes­
sage appears, there may be limited sta rting
ability .
If this message turns off afte r a little while,

contact your authorized Audi dealer or quali­
fied workshop to have all brake pads inspect ­
ed. On USA models the warning light

Both sets of b rake pads on an axle must al­
ways be rep laced at the same time.
A WARNING
Dr iv ing with bad brakes can cause a coll i­
sion and serious personal injury.

have all brake pads checked or replaced if

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
elec tronic power control .
The [31 warning/indicator light (E lectronic
Power Control) i lluminates when you switch
the ignition on as a function check .

If t his warning/indicator light ill uminates
while you are driving, then there is a ma lfunc ­
tion in the engine electron ics. Have the mal ­
function corrected as soon as possible by your

· o Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The Ma lfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
The symbol
('4 lights up when the ignition is
switched on and will turn off after the eng ine
has started and has settled at a constant idle
speed . This i ndicates that the M IL is work ing
properly.
The warning light illuminates when there is a
malfu nction in the e ngine electron ic system .

t h e malfunc tion corrected.

nates . The engi ne speed is limited to the

tem. Keep in mind that the engine speed w ill
not exceed the val ue d isplayed in the dr iver in­
f ormat ion system, for example when down­
shifting .

tion in the headlights or lig ht switch.
Drive to your authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .
&, WARNING
-Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex­
p lode whi le they are being changed caus­
ing serio us personal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
high-vo ltage section of gas discharge
(xenon) lights*. Failure to do so could re­
sult in death or serious injury.

If the symbol II illuminates , the dynamic
headlight range control is no longer working
proper ly . Have the system checked and re­

§0 Audi Adaptive Light
Appl ies to vehicles : wit h Audi adapt ive light
mfl Audi adaptive light: System fault!
If the indicator light turns on and this mes­
sage appears, there is a malfunction in the
adaptive light system. The headlights still
funct ion.

If the engine fails to start immediately, switch
off the starter and try again after about
30 seconds . To start the engine again, turn
the ignition key to position @.
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -dange r of asphyxiation.
- Never remove the ign ition key from the
ignition look while the vehicle is moving.
Otherw ise, the stee ring lock could sud­
denly engage and you would not be able
to steer the vehicle.
- Always take the key with you whenever
you leave your vehicle . Otherwise, the
engine could be started or e lectr ica l
equipment such as the power w indows
cou ld be operated . This can lead to seri­
o us injury .
- Never leave c hildren or persons requi ring
assistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doo rs can be locked using the remote
transmitter, preventing peop le from es­
caping from the vehicle on their own in
the event of an emergency. Depend ing
on the time of year, people inside the ve­
hicle can be exposed to very h igh or ve ry
low temperatures .

Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and
heavy eng ine loads until the eng ine has
reached operat ing temperature -other­
w ise you risk engine damage.

Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Beg in driving immediately. This

-If it is difficult to turn the ignition key to
posit ion ©, move the steering wheel (to
take the load off the steer ing lock mech­
anism) until the key turns freely.
-After starting a cold engine, there may be a brief period of increased no ise be­
cause the oil pressure must f irst bu ild up
in the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is
normal and not a cause for concern.

necessa ry. Be ca use you canno t steer and
bra ke as you usually wo uld, this could
lead to crashes and ser ious injuries .

- T he radiator fan can continue to run for

Steering lock
The steering locks when you turn the engine

i n g helps preven t vehicle theft.
Emergenc y Off functi on
If necessary in an emergency, the engine can
be sw itched off while the vehicle is st ill mov­
ing. Press the
I S TAR T ENG IN E ST OPI button
tw ice in quick succession or ho ld it in for lon­
ger than two seconds .
_& WARNING
-Never t urn off the engine before the ve­
h icle has come to a complete stop . The
full function of the brake booster and the power steering is not guaranteed. You
must use more force to turn or brake if
necessary . Because you cannot steer and
brake as you usually would, this could
lead to crashes and serious injur ies .
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the se lector lever
in P. Otherwise, the ve hicl e co uld inad­
vertent ly roll away.
- The rad iator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 min utes even after you have
t urned off the eng ine and removed the
ignition key . The radiator fan can also
turn on again if the engine coolant heats

Starting the engine after a malfunction

If the remote control key battery is exhausted
or if radio interference or a system malfunc­
tion o ccurs, extra steps may be necessary in
order to start the engine .

- If you damage the front s poiler, or if you
insta ll a different spoiler, be su re the air
flow to the front brakes is not obstruct­ ed. Otherwise the brake system could
ov erhe at r educi ng the eff ect iveness of
t h e enti re brak e system.
- Failure of one brake ci rcuit will impair
the braking capability resulting in an in­ creased stopp ing distance. Avoid driv ing
the vehicle and have it towed to the near­
est author ized Audi dealer or qualif ied
wor kshop.
- Never let the vehicle rol l to a stop w ith
the engine shu t off.
- If the brake booster is not working, the
brake pedal must be pressed conside ra­
bly harder to make up for the lac k of
booster assistance.
Electromechanical
steering
The electromechanical steering supports the
driver 's steering movements .
Power steering adapts electronically based on
the vehicle speed.
Ind icator light s and messages
• Steering fault! Do not drive vehicle !
If this indicator light tu rns on and stays on
and this message appears, t he power steering
may have fa iled.
Stop the vehicle in a safe locat ion as soon as
possib le . Do
not continue driving . See your
author ized Audi dealer or other qua lified re­
pa ir facility for assistance .
If the indicator light turns on, the steer ing
may be more d ifficu lt to move or more sensi­
tive than usual. The steer ing may also be at an
angle when dr iving st raight . Drive slowly to you
r authorized Audi dea ler or
qualified workshop to have the ma lf u nction
corrected.

Winter tires
When driving in the winter, yo ur vehicle with
all-wheel drive has an advantage, eve n wit h
regular tires. In winter road conditions it may
be advisable to mount winter tires (or all-sea­
son tires) for improved driveability and brak­
ing: these tires must be mounted on
all four
wheel s.

During the first few hours of driving, the en ­
g ine's interna l friction is higher than later
when all the moving parts have been broken in . How well this break -in process is done de ­
pends to a considerable extent on the way the
ve hicl e is driven du ring the first 1,000 miles
(1,500 k ilome ters).

Do not drive with unnecessarily high en­
g ine speeds - upshifting ear ly saves f uel,
reduces noise and protects the environ­
ment.
New tires
If your vehicle is running on new tires, drive
very carefully for the first 350 miles (500 ki lo­
meters) after fitting.

N ew tires tend to be sl ippery and mus t al­
so be "b roken -in" . Be sure to remember
this dur ing the f irst 350 m iles (500 kilo­
meters) . Brake gently . Avoid fo llowing
closely behind other vehicles or other sit­
uations that m ight require sudden, hard
b raking .
Avoid damaging the
vehicle
When you are d rivi ng on poo r roads, or over
cu rbs, steep ramps, etc., make certa in that
low- ly in g parts s uch as spo ile rs and ex ha ust
system parts do not bottom o ut and get dam ­
aged.
Th is is espec ially true for veh icles with low­
s lung chassis (spo rts chas sis)* and fully load ­
ed vehicles.
Catalytic converter
It is very important that your emission con­ trol system (catalytic converter) is function ­
ing properly to ensure that your vehicle is run­
ning in an environmentally sound manner.
