Auto Check Control
Introduction
The Auto-Check contro l monitors the funct io n of
certa in vehicle features and components. It sim ­
p ly makes sure these features and components
a re working properly . T he Auto-Check control
works as long as the ignition is on, as well as
wheneve r the ve hicle is driven .

If a component is ma lfunctioning or if the need
for an urgent repa ir has been detected, this will
a p pear in the ins trument cluste r display . You w ill
a lso hear an audib le wa rning tone . T he disp lays
a re color coded in e ithe r re d or yellow depe nding
o n their level of p rior ity .
A red symbol means
Danger , a yellow symbo l in ­
d icates
Warning . In ce rtain s ituations, informa­
tion message for the dr ive r appea r in a ddi tion to
the re d and yellow sym bols.
Note about automatic transmission
The Auto -Check Co ntrol w ill automatically pe r­
form a test each time you switch o n the ignition .
W it h the selector lever in P o r N, the fo llow ing
m essage appe ars in t he disp lay :
When stationary apply brake pedal while select­
ing gear
When you select a different gear (for example: R ,
D , etc.), the message w ill disappea r and the A u­
to -Check fu nction is d isplayed .
If th e re is a malfunct io n, then the malfunction
message will appear about 15 seconds afte r yo u
start the ve hicle. At the same time you w ill hear a
war ning tone.

Driver information messages are shown in the in­
strument cluster display in addition to symbols .

~ Drive immediate ly to an authorized Audi dealer
to have the malfunction corrected .
If there is a malfunction in the electronic ignition
lock, the ignition cannot be turned off . Drive im­
mediately to an authorized service facility to have
the cause of the malfunction corrected.
On vehicles with Convenience key*, the engine
should not be switched off using the Start/Stop button because the engine cannot be started
again after the ignition has been switched off.

When a yellow warning symbol appears, one
warning tone sounds. A driver message appears
as well to exp la in the malfunction in more detail.
The driver warning goes out after about 5 sec­
onds, but it can be brought up at any t ime by
pressing the
ISETI button again.
Check the function disp layed as soon as possible.
The yellow symbol w ill not go out aga in until the
reason for the malfunct ion has been corrected.
If severa l priority 2 ma lfunctions are present, the
symbols appear in succession and remain for
about 2 seconds.

again
If this drive r notificat ion appea rs after the igni­
tion is tu rned on or while driv ing and does not go
out again, the battery's state of charge is not in
the optimal range. Start ing capability is restrict­
ed . Have the battery checked at an authorized
Audi dealer or other qualified workshop as soon as possible.

- Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades result
in streaking. This can affect the rain sensor
function . Check your windshield wiper
blades regularly.
- The washer fluid nozzles of the windshield
washer system are heated at low tempera­
tures when the ignition is on .
- When stopp ing temporarily, e .g . at a traffic
light, the set speed of the windsh ield wipers
i s automatically reduced by one speed .
Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the windshield wiper blades when they be­
gin to leave streaks . Use a soft cloth and g lass
cleaner to clea n the windshield wipe r blades .

- You should not move your vehicle or press
the windsh ield wiper lever when the wiper
arms are folded away from the windshie ld.

the hood and w indshie ld .

,...., Offroad driving Driving under difficult
conditions and off-road
General information
The operation of the Electronic Stabilization Con­
trol (ESC) is expanded for operation away from paved roads. In situations where slip or a differ­
ential locking fun ction is required , the offroad
mode can be activated ¢
page 190. Your Audi al­
so has permanent all-wheel drive in addition .
However, your Audi is not a pure offroad vehicle.
It was not built for driving under extreme condi­
tions, e.g. for tr ips that are in the nature of an
expedition .
Drive only on roads and offroad sections which
match the design of your vehicle and your abili­
ties as a driver. Never take risks!
Before driving offroad
-Check the engine oi l level, tire pressure, coo l­
ant level, and the fluid level in the windshield
washer reservo ir.
- Stow luggage items and other objects in the
luggage compartment, and secure them
against sliding around.
After driving offroad
-After trips offroad, remove any twigs and other
foreign objects from the gri ll, the underbody
and the wheels. Pay special attention to foreign
objects (stones) which have become lodged in
the tire tread.
- Clean the body and the vehicle underside, and
inspect the vehicle for possible damage.
- Clean dirty windows, headlamp lenses, rear
lights, and license plates.
- Perform a brake check (particularly after travel­
ling through water).
A WARNING
-Drive especially attentively and plan ahead
in difficult road condit ions and when off­
road. Excessive speed or incorrect maneu­
vers can cause injuries and damage to the
vehicle .
Offroad driving
-Always adapt your speed and driving style to
road, offroad, traffic, and weather condi­
tions. Drive especially slowly offroad when
your view is restricted.
- Please be aware that in offroad mode, par­
ticularly on a smooth and slippery road, the
wheels may have an increased tendency to spin and the vehicle may break away - dan­
ger of skidd ing!
- Stability is lim ited in the offroad mode .

Avoid damage to the environment and re­
spect nature.

Only drive where it is permitted and stay on
marked roads and paths.
Explanation of some technical terms
The following data refer to ideal conditions. De­
pending on vehicle load and ground conditions
and the environment, the numbers may vary. It is
the driver's responsibility to decide whether ave­
hicle can overcome a specific s ituation

Gradient angle
The number of meters in altitude gained over a
distance of 109.4 yards or 100 meters (grade)
are given as a percentage or degrees. Informa­
t ion about the gradient the vehicle can cl imb un­
der its own power (depends in part on the road
s ur face and eng ine power). Maximum permitted
grade: 31

Ground clearance
The distance between the road surface and the
lowest point of the vehicle underbody. Ground
clearance 7.9 in (200 mm)

Exceeding the stated maximum figures can
result in severe injuries or vehicle damage.

The engine oil used must conform to exact speci­
fications.
The serv ice interval display in the instrument
cluster of your vehicle will inform you when it is
time for an oi l chang e. We recommend that you
have your oi l changed by an authorized Audi Serv­
i ce Advisor.
If you have to top off the oil between oil changes,
us e the Audi oil quality standard specified in the
ta ble.

ergy management functions correctly after re­
placing the battery.
If it is not possible to use a battery of this type,
the new battery must have the same capacity,
voltage (12 volts), amperage, construction and
plug sealing .
When installing the battery, make sure the igni­
tion and all electrical consumers are turned off.
CD Note
- Make sure the vent ilation hose on the side
of the battery is connected, otherwise
fumes or battery acid can leak out.
- Vehicles with the Start-Stop-System* are
equipped with a special cycle-proof AGM
battery. Installing a different type of bat­
tery can cause prob lems in the vehicle elec­
trical system. When replacing the vehicle battery, always install one with the same
spec ifications as the original battery.
@) For the sake of the environment
Because of the problem of proper disposal of
a battery, we recommend your authorized
Audi dealer change the battery for you. Bat­
ter ies contain sulfuric acid and lead and must
always be disposed of properly in compliance
with all environmental regulations. Disposing
of vehicle batteries imp roperly is very danger­
ous to the environment.
