rustproofing on or near the exhaust mani­
fold, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter or heat shields. During dr iv ing, the substance
used for undercoating could overheat and
cause a fire.
Q) Note
- Be aware that just one tank filling with
leaded fuel will already ser iously degrade
t h e pe rformance of the catalytic converter .
- Do not exceed the correct eng ine o il level

-Do not drive until the fuel tank becomes
complete ly empty. The engine could mis­
fire. Unburned fuel could also get into the
exhaust system and this cou ld cause the
catalytic conve rte r to overheat.

der these cond it ions, as otherwise fuel can
r each the catalytic converte r. This cou ld re­

in accordance with the service recommen­
dations in your Warranty

- Lack of proper maintenance as well as im­
proper use of the vehicle will impair the
function of the em ission control system
and co uld lead to damage.
@) For the sake of the environment
Even when the Em ission Control System is op­
erat ing properly, the exhaust gas can have a
sulfur-like exhaust gas smell under some op­
erat ing states. This depends on the su lfu r
conten t of the fuel being used. Using a differ­
ent brand of fue l may he lp, or filling the tan k
with lead -free s uper grade gasoline.
Driving and the envir onment
Diesel particulate filter
App lies to : veh icles w ith diesel en gine
The diese l particu late filter filters near ly all of
the soot particles out of the exhaust. The filter
cleans itself automatica lly under norma l driving
condit ions. If the filter cannot clean itself (for ex­
amp le, because you are only driving short distan­
ces), the filter becomes clogged with soot and
the m symbol for the d iesel part icu late filter il­
luminates
c:> page 31 .

-Do not park your veh icle over flammab le
mate ria ls s uch as grass or leaves because
the high temperature of the diesel particu­
late filter cou ld start a fi re.

- Do not app ly an underbody pro te ctant in the
exhaust system area or a fire could sta rt .
Avoid damaging the
vehicle
When you are driving on poor roads, or over
curbs, steep ramps, etc., make certain that low­
ly ing parts such as spo ilers and exhaust system
parts do not bottom out and get damaged .
This is especially true for vehicles with low-s lung
chassis (sports chass is)* and fully loaded
vehicles.
Economical and environ­
mentally-friendly driving
General
Your personal style of driving will determine the
economy of your vehicle, as well as exhaust and
noise levels .
Fuel economy, env ironmental impact, and wear
o n your engine, brakes and tires large ly depend
on three factors :
- your pe rsonal d riving s tyle
- operat ing cond itions
- technical limitat ions
If you ant ic ipate what you need to do next and
drive economically, you can easily cut your fuel

consumption by 10-15 percent. This section will
give you some tips on how you can help the envi­
ronment and your pocketbook.
(D Tips
The consumption estimates as published by
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY
(EPA) and Transport Canada may not corre­
spond to your actual consumption on the
road, which will vary depend ing upon vehicle
load and speed, road and weather conditions,
trip length, etc .
Drive smoothly and keep a lookout ahead
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are acceler­
ating .
"'Avo id unnecessary accelerating and braking.
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are acceler ­
ating . If you anticipate what is going to happen
next, you will need to brake less and, thus, accel­
erate less . Let the vehicle coast whenever possi­
ble -for example when you see that the next traf­
fic light is red .
Avoid full throttle
Driving a t moderate speeds saves fuel and im­
proves your mileage .
"'Try and keep well below your car 's maximum
speed .
Accelerating gent ly reduces fuel consumption,
engine wear, and does not disturb the environ­
ment.
Fue l cons umption, exhaust emissions and engine
noise increase d isproportionately at high speeds .
If you drive at approximately three q uarters of
top speed, fuel consumpt ion w ill be reduced by
one half. Never drive faster than the posted
speed limit and weather conditions permit.

· Reducing unnecessary idling
E ven when your car is just idling it burns up fuel .
"'Shut the engine off when you are not driving
the vehicle.
"' Do not warm up the vehicle by letting the en-
gine run at idle .
The idling phase is automatically reduced for
vehicles with the Start-Stop-System*. It is effi­ c ient to sw itch off the engine in vehicles without
the Start-Stop-System* when stopped at ra ilroad
cross ings and long red lights. Turning the engine
off fo r just 30-40 seconds saves more fuel than is
bur ned by s tarting the engine again .
It takes a long time for the engine to warm up
fully when it is runn ing at id le . However, wea r
and noxious emissions are especially high when
the engine is warming up . So yo u should dr ive
away as soon as you sta rt the eng ine and avo id
running at hig h rpms whi le the engine is st ill
warming up .
Q) Note
Do not leave eng ine idling una ttended after
starting. If warning lights shou ld come on to
indicate improper operation, they would go
unheeded. Extended idling also prod uces
heat, which could result in overheating or
other damage to the vehicle or other proper­
ty .
· Regular maintenance
A badly tuned engine unnecessarily wastes a lot
of fuel .
"' Have your vehicle serviced at regular interva ls.
By having your vehicle regular ly serv iced by an
authorized Audi dea le r helps to ensure that it
r uns prope rly and economically . The condition of
your vehicle not on ly affects its safety and ability
to hold its value, it also affects
fuel consump­
t ion .
Check your oil each time you fill your tank.

It is normal for the oil consumption of a new en­
gine to reach its lowest value after a certain mile­
age has been driven .
You must drive your vehicle abo ut 3,000 miles
(5,000 k ilometers) before you can proper ly as ­
sess oi l cons umption.
This a lso applies to fuel consumption and engine
ou tput.

valves, which are designed to protect your
vehicle's Em ission Control System and other

Fewer short trips
Fuel consumption will always be relatively high
on short trips .
.. Try to avoid driving short distances with a cold
engine.
The engine and catalyt ic converter have to reach
their optimal
ope rating temperature to reduce
fuel consumption and noxious emissions effec­
t ively .
Just after starting, a co ld engine in a mid-size car
only achieves a fuel economy of 6-8 miles per
ga llon (30-40 l/100 km). After about a half a
mile, fuel economy cl imbs to 12 mpg (20 l/100
km). After about
2 .5 miles (4 km), the engine is
at its proper operating temperature and fuel
economy has reac hed a norma l level. So you can
see that you sho uld avo id short t rips w henever
possib le.
Driving and the envir onment
The out side tempe rature is a lso crit ica l in this re­
gard . Your car consumes more fuel in the winter
than in the summer .

-Ideal conditions do not prevail offroad . Nev­
er utilize the maximum readings to their
fullest, always leave a safety reserve.
Driving tips
On poor rood and offrood, there is always only
one motto: Plan ahead and drive slowly!
Please observe the following when driving away
from paved roads:
~ Drive only on roads and offroad sections wh ich
match the design of your veh icle and your abili ­
ties as a driver. Never take risks!
~ Drive slowly and plan ahead!
~ Take into consideration the ground clearance
of your veh icle.
~ Activate the off road mode q page 186 as need­
ed .
~ Use the hill descent assist q page 188 when
driv ing down steep sections on h ills.
Unpaved road s and offroad
Drive s low ly on unfamiliar roads and unknown
offroad sections, and look out for unexpected ob­
stacles (e .g . potholes, rocks, tree stumps, etc .).
T o prevent the vehicle from bottoming and avoid
damage to the underbody, you should drive
stra ight across severe bumps in the ground with
only one side of the vehicle so that only two of
your wheels cross the bumps .
Drive briskly through sandy or marshy offroad
sections and do not stop, if at all possible.
Driving through water
Note the following to avoid vehicle damage when
driving through water, for example on flooded
roads:
- Th e wate r must not be any higher than the bot-
tom of the vehicle body.
- Do not drive faster than walking speed.
Driving on a slope
If you ever find yourself not able to climb a slope,
do not try to turn around, drive back down in
re­
verse.
Othe rw ise, you run the risk of tipping over.
Offroad driving
If the vehicle threatens to tip over when driving
across a slope, you must immediately steer
downhill in the direction of the slope.
Do not park your vehi cle on steep slopes or
grades .
T o reduce the risk of tipping over, drive on slopes
i n the direction of the downward slope (fall line) -
not crosswise .
& WARNING ~ -
After driving thro ugh water, mud, slush, etc.,
the brakes may be slow to take effect beca use
of wet brake rotors and pads. Dry the brakes
f ir st by braking carefu lly to restore the full
braking effect.

-Vehicle components such as the engine,
transmission, suspension or electrical sys ­
tem can be severely damaged by driving
through water .
- Always switch off the Start-Stop-System*
when driving through water

-Check the depth of the water before driving
through it.

switch the engine off when driving through

- Keep in mind that oncoming vehicles may
create waves that raise the water level and
make it too deep for your vehicle to drive

Trailer towing weights
With a
factory-installed or an aftermarket trailer
hitch, the maximum permissible trailer weight is
4,400 lbs (2,000 kg) . The maximum permissible
unbraked trailer weight is 1,650 lbs (750 kg).
These specifications apply when driving on roads having an incline of less than 12%.
Permissible tongue load
For best vehicle handling under these changed
conditions, adjust the trailer load so that the
tongue load is at the maximum allowable or
slightly lower. You can get an approximation of
the tongue load with a bathroom scale or you can
measure the load at a trucking company or
weighing station.
With a
factory-installed or an aftermarket trailer
hitch, the maximum permissible load on the ball
hitch may not exceed 440 lbs (200 kg) .
It is rec­
ommended to use the maximum permissible
load.
Trailer load distribution Be sure the load in the trailer is held securely in
place to prevent it from shifting forward, back­
ward or sideways.
Never allow a passenger to ride in a trailer ¢.&.

Ball mount
The trailer hitch may only be used with suitable ball mount and ball¢
fig. 188 . Installation of
the hitch ball must be carried out in accordance
with the manufacturer's instructions .
Trailer towing
Engine cooling system
Towing a trailer makes the engine work harder. It
is important that the cooling system's perform­
ance is up to the additional load. Make sure that
the cooling system has enough fluid.
Tire pressure
When towing a trailer, inflate the tires of your
vehicle to the tire pressure listed under "Full
load" on the label¢
page 240. Inflate trailer
tires to trailer and tire manufacturers' specifica­
tions.
Lights
The headlight settings should be checked with
the trailer attached before driving off. Check to
make sure both vehicle and trailer lights are
working properly.
Safety chains
Be sure trailer safety chains are properly connect­
ed from the trailer to the hitch on the vehicle .
Leave enough slack in the chains to permit turn­
ing corners. When you install safety chains, make
sure they will not drag on the road when you are
driving.
The chains should cross under the trailer tongue
to prevent it from dropping in case of separation
from the hitch.
· Driving instructions
Driving with a trailer always requires extra care
and consideration.
Weight distribution
Towing a loaded trailer with an empty car results
in a highly unstable distribution of weight. If this
cannot be avoided, drive at very low speeds only
to avoid the risk of losing steering control.
A "balanced " rig is easier to operate and control.
This means that the tow vehicle should be loaded
to the extent possible and permissible, while
keeping the trailer as light as possible under the
circumstances. Whenever possible, transfer
some cargo to the luggage compartment of the
tow vehicle while observing tongue load require-
ments and vehicle loading considerations. .,.

Trailer towing
Sp eed
The higher the speed, the more d ifficult it be­
comes for the driver to contro l the rig. Do not
dr ive at the maximum permissible speed. Reduce
your speed even more if load, w eather or wind
conditions are unfavorable -particularly when
going downhill.
Red uce vehicle speed

shows the s lightest sign of swaying .
Do not try
to stop the swayin g by ac cele rating.
Observe speed limits . In some areas, speeds for
vehicles towing trailers are lower than for reg ular
ve hicles.
A lways apply b rakes early . When dr iving down­
hi ll, shi ft into a lower gear to use the engine
braking effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes a lone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperatu re gauge ¢ page 8 must
be observed ca refully . If the needle moves close
to the upper end of the scale, reduce speed im ­
mediately and/or turn off the air conditioner .
I f t he coolan t temperature warn ing light i n the

A WARNING
Anyone not properly restrained in a moving
vehicle is at a much greater risk in an acci­
dent . Never let anyone ride in your car who is
not properly wearing the restraints provided
by Audi .
Trailer towing
information
Important to know
Your veh icle hand les different ly when tow ing a
tra iler because of the additional weight and dif ­
fe rent weight d istr ibut ion . Safety, performance
and economy w ill great ly depend on how careful­
ly you load you r trailer and operate your rig .

Before you actually tow your trailer, practice
turning, stopping and backing up in an area away
from traffic . Keep pract icing unt il yo u h ave be ­
come comp lete ly familiar w ith the way your vehi­
cle-tra iler combination behaves and responds.
Backing up is difficult and requires practice .
Backing up w ith a trailer generally req uires steer ­
i ng action opposite to that when backing up your
vehicle without a trailer.
Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle
and the one in front of you . You will need more
room to stop. To compensate for the trailer, you
will need a larger than normal turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot accel­ erate as fast as you normally wou ld because of
the added load. Make sure you have enough room
to pass. After passing, allow p lenty of room for
your trailer before changing lanes again.
Avo id jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane
changes.

- Do not tow a trailer during the break-in peri­
od of your veh icle.
- If you tow a trai ler, your Audi may requi re
more frequent maintenance due to the ex­

' Parking on a slope
Do not park on a slope with a trailer. If it cannot
be avoided, do so only after doing the following:
When parking:
.,. App ly the foot bra ke .
.,. Have someone place cho cks under bot h the ve­
hicle and the trailer wheels .
.,. With choc ks in place, slowly release the brakes
until the wheel chocks absorb the load.
.,. Turn the wheels towards the curb .
.,. App ly the parking brake .
.,. Move the selector lever to P .
When restarting after parking :

Gasoline
Applies to: vehicles with gaso line engine
Using the right fuel helps keep the environment
clean and prevents engine damage .
Fuel re co mm endati on
The fuel recommended for your vehicle is unlead­
ed pr em ium
grade gasoline. Audi recommends
using TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline with a mini­
mum octane rat ing of 91 AKI (95 RON). For more
information on TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline,
p lease go to the official website
(www.toptiergas .com) .
The recommended gasoline octane rating for
your engine can also be found on a label located
on the inside of the fuel filler flap . Th is rating
may be spec ified as AK I or RON.
Your veh icle may also be operated using unlead­
ed regular gasoline with a min imum octane rat ­
ing of
87 AKl/9 1 RON . However, using 87 AKl/91
RON octane f uel w ill slightly reduce engine pe r­
fo rmance.
Us e un lead ed g asolin e onl y. Unleaded gasoline
is available throughout t he USA, Canada, and in
most Eu ropean count ries . We recommend that
you do not ta ke your vehicle to areas or countries
where u nleaded gasol ine may not be availab le.

Octane r ating
Octane rating indicates a gasoline's ability to re­
sist engine damaging "knock" caused by prema­
ture ignit ion a nd detonation . Therefore , buy ing
the co rrect grade of gasoline is very important to
h e lp p revent poss ible engine damage and a loss
of eng ine performance.
Gasoline most commonly used in the Un ited
States and Canada has the following octane rat­
ings that can usually be fo und on the filler pump:
- Premium Grade: 91 -96 AKI
Fuel and R efueling
- Reg ular G rade: 87 -90 AK I

AK I=
Anti Knock Index = (R +M)/2 = (RON +MON)/

RON = Research Octane Number
MON = Motor Octane Number .

Use of gasoline containing alcohol or MTBE
(methyl tertiary butyl ether )
You may use unleaded gasoline blended with al­
cohol or MTB E (commonly referred to as oxygen ­
ates) if the blended m ixture meets the follow ing
c riteria:
Blend o f gasoline methanol ( wood alcohol or
methyl alcoho l)
-Anti -knock index must be 87 AKI or h igher.
- Blend must contain no more than 3% metha-
nol.
- Blend must contain more than 2% co -solvents.
Blend of gasoline and ethanol (grain alcoh ol or
ethyl alcohol)
- Anti-knock index must be 87 AKI or higher .
- Blend must not conta in more than 15% etha-
nol.
- Veh icles with flex ible fue l* engine: blend must
not contain more tha n 85% ethanol.
Blend of gasoline and MTBE
- Anti-knoc k index mus t be 87 A KI or h igher.
- Blend must contain no t mo re than 15% MTBE.

Many gasoline grades are b lended to perform es­
pecia lly we ll for winter or summer driving. Dur­
ing seasonal change-over, we suggest that you
fill up at busy gas stations where the seasonal
adjustment is more likely to be made in time.
@) Note
-Fuels containing a high percentage of etha­
nol such as ESO and E85 may only be used in
vehicles with flexible fuel* engines. Using high ethanol fuel in vehicles not equipped
with flexible fuel* engines can cause severe
engine damage.
- Methanol fuels which do not meet these re­ quirements may cause corros io n and dam­
age to plast ic and rubber components in the
fuel system.
- Do not use fuels that fail to meet the spec i­
fied c riter ia in this chapter.
- If you a re unable to determine whether or
not a particular fuel blend meets the spec i­
ficat ions, ask your service station or its fuel
supplier.
- Do not use fuel for wh ich the contents can­
not be identified.
- Fuel system damage and performance p rob­
l ems result ing from the use of fue ls diffe r­
ent from those specified are not the respon­
s ibility of Audi and are not covered under
the New Vehicle or the Emission Control
System Warranties .
- If you experience a loss of fue l economy o r
driveability and performance prob lems due
to the use of one of these fuel b lends, we
recommend that you switch to unblended
fuel.
Ethanol fuel (Bio -ethanol)
Ap plies to: vehicl es w ith flex ible fuel engine
You con recognize vehicles with a flexible fuel
engine by looking at the label on the inside of
the fuel filler flop.
Vehicles with flexible f uel engines may be oper­
ated w ith bio-ethanol fuels such as E85 (85%
ethanol and 15% gasoline) or with unleaded gas­
oline (91 AKI/ROZ 95). The vehicle may also be
operated with a mixture of these fuels .

Your fuel consumpt ion wi ll increase when using
bio-ethano l fue ls due to the lower amount of en­
ergy contained per un it vo lume in ethanol.
Warming up th e fle xible fuel engine in low
temperatures
Due to the chemical composition of bio-ethanol ,
a certain amount of fuel ends up in the engine o il
when driving short distances in very low temper­
atures. This fuel evaporates again when the en­
gine is warmed up .
II Please warm up engine .
If the driver message appears in the instr ument
cluster disp lay, drive with a warm engine to re­
duce the oil leve l.
(D Note
- N ever fill with methano l o r with a h igher
percentage of bio -e thanol than 85% (E85).
A highe r percentage of bio-ethanol in the
fuel can cause damage to the engine or to
the fuel system.
- If you use on ly E85, it is recommended to
fill the fue l tank comp lete ly with unleaded
premium grade gasoline every 5,000 mi les.
- If you experience starting, rough id le or hes ­
itat ion driveab ility prob lems, f ill the fuel
tank comp lete ly with unleaded prem ium
grade gaso line and drive it no rma lly until
the gaso line is used. See your author ized
Audi dealer if the prob lem pers ists.
- Inform your authorized Audi dealer that you
are operat ing or have operated the vehicle
with E85.
- Read and follow the informat ion and tips
about gasoline~
page 209.

ble, use winterized fue l if tempe ratu res are
below free zing .

Gasoline additives
Applies to: vehicles with gasoline engine
A major concern among many auto manufactur­
ers is carbon deposit build-up caused by the type
of gasoline you use.
Although gasoline grades differ from one manu­
facturer to another, they have certain things in
common. All gasoline grades contain substances
that can cause deposits to collect on vital engine parts, such as fuel injectors and intake valves . Al ­
though most gasolin e brands include additives to
keep engine and fuel systems clean, they are not
equally effe ctive.
Audi recommends using TOP TIER Detergent Gas­
oline. For more information on TOP TIER Deter­
gent Gasoline , please go to the official website
(www.toptiergas.com).
After an extended period of using inadequate
fuels, built-up carbon depos its can rob your en­
gine of peak performance.
CD Note
- Damage or malfunction due to poor fuel
quality is not covered by the Audi New Vehi­
cle Limited Warranty .
- Do not add aftermarket fuel additive prod­
ucts to your fuel tank.
Diesel fuel
Applies to: veh icles with diesel eng ine
Always use ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) No. 2.
The ULSD No . 2 meets the ASTM 0975.
Diesel fuel with concentrations of biodiesel high­
er than S % such as 811,820 or 8100 are strictly prohibited.
Service station fuel pumps are labeled with the
correct fuel information for easy recognition by
the user. If the diesel fuel pump is not labeled
ask the station operator what fuel is being dis­
pensed before filling up your vehicle .
ULSD No . 2 may not be available outside the USA
and Canada. Be sure to check before traveling to
other countries.
Fuel and Refueling
ULSD No. 2 can become thicker in very cold tem­
peratures, and this can impair the engine 's start­
ing and running. Depending on the season, gas
stations provide ULSD No.
2 that flows better in
cold temperatures so tha t you can continue oper­
ating your vehicle as usual.
CD Note
- Your vehicle's diesel engine was designed
soley for use with ULSD No.
2. Therefore,
never use gasoline, heating oil, other fuels
or flow improvers . These contain substances
that will severely damage the fuel system
and the engine. Such damage will not be
covered by your New Vehicle Limited War­
ranty.
- If you put any amount of incorrect fuel in
the fuel tank, do not start the engine under
any circumstances. Immediately contact the
nearest authorized Audi dealer or author­
ized Audi Service Facility for assistance.
These fuels contain substances that can se­
verely damage the fuel system and the en­ gine if the engine is started .
Refueling
Fuel filler neck
The fuel filler neck is located on the right rear
side panel behind the fuel filler flap.
If the power locking system should fail, you can
still open the flap manually -for detailed instruc­
tions see
¢ page 213.

The label on the inside of the fuel filler flap tells
you the correct fuel for your vehicle. For more in­
format ion about fuel specificat ions, see
¢ page 209.
Your vehicle fuel tank has an on-board refuelling
vapor recovery system. This feature helps to pre­
vent fuel vapors from escaping from the tank and polluting the environment while you refuel your
vehicle. In order to fill the tank properly while
protecting the environment, please follow this
refueling procedure carefully.

_& WARNING
Under normal operating conditions, never car ­
ry additional fuel containers in you r car. Gas
canisters and other containers used to trans­
port fuel can be dangerous . Such containers,
full or empty, may leak and could cause a fire
in a collision. If you must transport fuel to
use for your lawn mower, snow blower, etc.,
be very careful and a lways observe local and
state laws regarding the use, transportation
and sto rage of such fue l conta iners. Make cer­
tain the container meets industry standards (ANSI/ASTM F852 -86) .
(D Note
Never drive you r vehicle unt il the fuel tank is
comp letely empty. The irregular supply of
fue l can cause m isfiring. Gasoline cou ld enter
the exhaust system and damage the catalytic
converter.

When activating the central locking, the fuel f ill­
er flap is automatically unlocked o r locked. Re­
fuel the vehicle with the ignition turned
off.

Refuelling procedur e
.. Insert the fuel nozzle from the gasoline pump
into the fuel filler neck as far as it will go.
.. Select a medium refuelling rate so that the
nozzle switches off automatically when the
tank is full.

.. After filling your tank, twist the fuel cap clock-
wise as far as it will go.
.. Close the fuel filler flap.
To avoid fuel spilling or evaporating from the fuel
tank always close fuel cap properly and com­
plete ly. An improperly closed fuel filler cap may
also cause the MIL lamp¢
page 23 to come on
(only vehicles with gasoline engine).
_& WARNING
Improper refueling or handling of fuel can
cause fire, explos ion and severe burns.
- Fuel is highly flammable and can cause se­
vere burns and other injuries.

- Fa ilure to shut the engine off while refuel­
ing and/or to insert the pump nozzle fully into the fue l filler neck could cause fuel to
spray out of fi ller neck or to overflow. Fue l
spray and ove rflowing f uel can ca use a fire .
- Never use a ce llular telephone while refuel­
ing. The electromagnetic radiation can
cause sparks t hat can ignite fuel vapors and
cause a fire.
- Never get back into your vehicle whi le refu­
eling. If in exceptional circumstances you
must get back in your vehicle wh ile refuel­
ing, make certain that you close the door
and touch metal to discharge static electric-
ity before touching t he f iller nozzle again. .,_
