Using the manual shift program you can man­
ually select gears .

before critical engine speed is reached.
The tra nsmiss ion on ly allows manual sh ifting
whe n the engine speed is w ith in the permit ted
range.
(D Tips
- When you shift into t he next lowe r gear, the
t ransmiss ion will downshift on ly when the re
is no possibili ty of over-revving the engi ne.
- Whe n the ki ck-down comes on, the trans­
mission w ill shif t down to a lowe r gear, de­
pend ing o n ve hicl e and engine speeds.
- Ti ptroni c is inoperat ive when the transm is­
sion is in the fail-safe mode.
- Hyb rid drive*: elect ric dr iving is not po ssib le
in t ipt ronic mode.
Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration.
When you depress the accelerator pedal beyond
the resistance point, the a utomat ic transmiss ion
downshifts into a lower gear, depending on vehi­
cl e speed and engine speed. The upsh ift into the
next highe r gear takes p lace on ce t he maxim um
spec ified eng ine speed is reached .

-Please no te that t he drive wheels can spin if
kick-down is used on a smooth slippe ry road -
there is a risk of skidd ing.
Transmission malfunction
ml Tran smission: Pre ss brake pedal and select
gear again.
Press the brake pedal and select the desired se­
l ector lever position again. Yo u can then conti nue
driv ing.
ml Transmission o verheating: Plea se dri ve con-

The transmission temperature has increased sig­
nificantly due to the sporty driving manner. Drive
in a less sporty manner until the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicator light
switches of.
rm Transmission malfunction: You can continue
driving
There is a system mal funct ion in the transm is­
sion. You may continue driving. Drive to your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified repair facility
soon to have the malfunction corrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Limited driving
functionality
There is a system malfunct ion in the transmis­
sion . T he transmission is switching to emergency
mode. This mode only shifts in to certa in gears or
will no longer shift at all. The engine may stall.
Drive to your authorized Audi dea ler or qualified
repair faci lity immediately to have the malfunc­
tion corrected.
rm Transmission malfunction: Stop vehicle and
shift to park.
Do not continue driving. Select the P selector lev­
e r position and see your a uthorized Aud i dea le r
or qualified repair facility for assistance.
(D Note
If the transmission switches to emergency
mode, you should take the vehicle to an au­
t horized Audi dealership as soon as possible
to have the condition cor rected.
Driving
Selector lever emergency release
If the vehicle's power supply fails, the selector
lever can be released in an emergency.

driver or sim ilar object, press the pin down and
hold it in that position .
.. Now press the release button and move these-
lector lever to the N position.
The selector lever can only be moved from the P
position if the key is in the lock and the ignition is
switched on. If the power supply fails (for exam­
ple, the battery is discharged) and the vehicle
must be pushed or towed, move the selector lev­
er to the N position f irst using the emergency re­
l ease .

Introduction
Applies to: vehicles with hybrid drive
Gener al inform ation
The hybr id drive is a combined drive concept that
automatically switches between combustion en­
g ine and e lectr ic drive types or combines them.
All work on h igh voltage systems is intended only
for h igh voltage technicians and may only be per­
formed by authorized service facilit ies in accord­
ance w ith Aud i regulat ions.
The high voltage system is composed of the fol­ lowing h igh voltage components : the h igh volt­
age battery, the power electron ics, the e lectr ic
motor, the high voltage A/C compressor and the
orange high voltage wir ing.
High voltage battery
The high voltage battery is located in the luggage
compartment underneath the cargo floor. You do
not need to perform any maintenance work on
the high voltage batte ry. Additional informat io n
about the h igh vo ltage battery can be found un­
der
¢ page 107 .
The high voltage battery service plug is also
found underneath an orange cover under the car ­
go floo r. The service plug is provided only for use
by service personnel and must not be removed by
others who are not trained to use it.
A WARNING
The voltage in the high voltage system is life­ threatening . Touching a damaged high volt­
age component can result in a fatal electric
shock. The components in the high voltage
system are marked with a warning label which
warns against the h igh voltage .
- Never perform work on orange high voltage
cables or on high voltage components . Only
authorized repair fac ilities that are certified
may perform wo rk on the high voltage sys­
tem .

-Never open or remove the service plug cover
in the center of the cargo floor .
- Never damage, alter or
remove the orange
high voltage cable or disconnect it from the
high voltage system .
- Audi regulat ions must be followed during
all work performed on the high voltage sys­
tem and high voltage components.
A WARNING
While in electric dr ive mode, the veh icle pro­
duces considerably less idling, driving and op­
erating noise than when the combust ion en­
g ine is running. Th is may make it difficu lt or
impossible fo r othe rs such as pedestrians and
chi ldren to hear and notice the vehicle when it
is in ele ct rical drive mode . Th is can lead to
collisions and inj uries, for example in low
traffic areas, when maneuvering or when driv­ ing in reverse.
A WARNING
Never leave the vehicle unattended while in
the drive ready mode. The vehicle could begin moving if the accelerator pedal is pressed ,
even if the combustion engine is switched off .

- When exi ting the vehicle, make su re these­
lecto r lever is in the P position, the ignition
is switched off and the hybrid system is de­
activated.
(D Note
- T he h igh voltage system can be damaged if
the vehicle underbody comes into contact
with the ground . Immediately drive your
ve­
hicle to an authorized repair facility and
have it inspected.
- Do not transport fluids in open containers in
the luggage compartment. Spilled fluids
can seep underneath the cargo floor. Th is
can damage the high voltage system.

Starting the vehicle
Applies to: vehicles with hybrid drive
The vehicle is started and turned off either wi th
the ign ition key <;>
page 81 or with the
IS TAR T ENG INE S TOPI button* 9 page 84 in t he
same way as a conventional vehicle .
W hen start ing the veh icle, the needles in the in­
s trument clus ter move upward briefly . When the
ve hicle enters d rive ready mode, the s tatus mes­
sage
hybrid ready appears briefly in t he instru­
ment cluster display and the needle in the power
meter points to
READY 9 page 101.
Depending on the ope ration mode of the hybrid
sys tem, there are two possible drive ready modes
after the vehicle has been started:

Press brake pedal to start vehicle
This message appears if you do not press the
brake pedal when starting the vehicle .
Shift to N or P to start vehicle
This message appears if the selector lever for the
automatic transmission is not in the Nor P posi­
tions when starting the vehicle.
- Hybrid drive: System fault! Power
brakes, steering malfunction possible
lfthe indicator light turns on and this message
appears, there is a malfunction in the hybrid sys­
tem . The brake booster and the power steering
may stop working. Stop the vehicle in a safe loca­
tion as soon as possible.

T he funct ions and operating modes described be­
low are selec ted automat ica lly by the vehicle con­
tro l system , depend ing on the vehicle ope rating
stat us. This e nsur es t hat the vehicle is always in
the co rrect operating mo de. One exception is the
e n hanced ele ct ric dr iving mo de
(E V mode), wh ic h
is act ivated by the dr iver

Driving with the combustion engine
The vehicle is powe red by the combust ion eng ine .
The high vo ltage battery is charged s imultane­
ously , if needed.
Full acceleration (boost)
In full acceleration, the vehicle is powe red by
both the comb ust ion eng ine and t he e lec tric mo­
tor . T his operat ing mode is called
Boost and is
on ly available for a s hort amo unt of time because
i t uses so much energy. Av ailability depends o n
the hig h voltage batte ry cha rge level.
Th e boost operating mode is act ivated by p ress­
in g the ac celerator ped al all the way down.
Electric driving
T he vehicle can be driven completely e lec trically
depend ing on the high voltage battery charge
leve l and the driv ing resistance . The combust ion
e n gine t urns off a t that time .
Hybrid
The combustion engine s tarts when accelerati ng
o r when the high voltage battery cha rge level
drops below a ce rtain t hreshold . The vehicle re ­
s u mes electric driving once the acceleration and
the high vo ltage battery charge leve l permit .
Enhanced electric driving mode (EV mode)
Pressing the
l.al"I button ¢ fig. 117 can extend the
u su a l lim its on e lectr ic driving so that you can a l­
ways dr ive in e lectric mode, if the cond ition o f
the e lectr ica l system permits. The operating
mode is the n set to maximum e lectr ic dr ive @ ,
@¢ page 101, fig. 116 . It can be d riven com­
pletely e lect rically fo r up to 1.8 miles (3 km) at a
constant
37 mp h (60 km/h) .
The following conditions must be met to activate
the e nhanced electric drive:
- The high vo ltage battery m ust be s ufficiently
charged .
- The temperatu re of the
1 2 volt batteries an d
the high voltage battery must be sufficient.
- The ve hicle speed must not be h igher than
62 mph (100 k m/h).
- The transmission must not be in tipt ronic
mo de.
- O ffroad mode an d hill descen t ass ist mus t not
be turne d on

The combustion engine turn s on and interrupts
t h e e nhanced ele ct ric dr ive mode when t he vehi­
cl e is acce le ra ted. The gray indicator light

so t urns on in the disp lay. The e nhanced electric
drive mo de resumes automatically once acce le ra­
t ion stops.
T he enhanced electric drive mode is deactivated
if at least one of the followi ng cond itions is met :
- The igni tion is tur ned off.
- Th e
l~· I button is pressed again .
- The high vo ltage battery charge level is low .
- The vehicle speed is higher than approximately
62 mph (100 km/h) .
- The
S selector lever position or tiptronic mode
is selected.
- Offroad mode or hill descent assist is switched
on .

Start-Stop function
The combustion engine is operated on ly as need­
ed . Generally, the combustion engine turns off
when the vehicle is stationary and the high volt­
age battery powers the electrical vehicle sys ­
tems.
The purpose o f automatica lly shutting the com­
bustion engine off in hybrid drive mode is to save
fuel. All of the important vehicle systems, such
as steering, brakes and the A/C system, continue
to remain active. In some cases , systems may re­
qu ire the combustion eng ine to continue running
when the vehicle is stationary . When dr iv ing in
congested traff ic for long per iods of t ime, the
combustion eng ine will cycle on when the veh icle
is stationary to keep the high voltage battery
charged.
Gliding
If the gas pedal is not pressed and the D posit ion
is selected, the combustion engine remains
turned off up to speeds of approximately 99 mph
(160 km/h) . Driving conservative ly like th is can
reduce fuel con5umption .
Energy recovery (recuperation)
When braking, the electric motor will act as a
generator creating e lectr ic energy that is then
sto red in the high voltage battery. This also oc­
curs when the vehicle is coasting or driving down­
hi ll. The combustion engine is automat ica lly
turned off in this case .

Automatic start of the combustion engine
Various operating conditions cause the combus ­
tion eng ine to start automatically:
- Th e high voltage battery charge level is low.
- Th e temperature of the combustion engine is
low .
- Th e temperature of the catalytic converter is
low .
- T he power output needed for the A/C system is
high.
- The vehicle speed is high .
- The vehicle acceleration is high .
- The incline is steep .
- High charge level for the high voltage battery
when coasting. In this case, the high voltage battery cannot absorb any more energy and so
the electric motor cannot slow down the veh i­
cle. The combust ion engine turns o n (engine
brake) . In this situation the high voltage bat­
t ery w ill show a Max charge.

The kinetic energy of the vehicle is used to
move the vehicle .
When you release the accelerator pedal en-
tirely, the combustion engine turns off auto-
mat ica lly and is disengaged. The vehicle
g lides without being propelled .
The electric motor brakes the vehicle . By do-
ing this, a large amount of the kinetic energy
is recovered and may be stored in the h igh
voltage battery in the form of electric energy .
The kinetic energy of the vehicle is used to
move the vehicle .
The battery dra ins quickly when the
!<=!VI but -
ton is turned on, which can increase fuel con-
sumpt ion because electric driv ing is given
priority, even if driv ing with the combustion
engine on wo uld be more efficient.
When you release the accelerator pedal en-
tirely, the combustion engine turns off auto- mat ically and is disengaged . The vehicle
g lides without being propelled .
F ue l consumption can be reduced by coast-
i ng.
It is possible to coast up to a vehicle speed of
approximately 99 mph (160 km/h).
A sporty driving style increases fue l con-
sumption .
The temperature of the combustion engine
rises very s lowly and the fuel consumption in-
creases considerably.
This conserves the energy in the high voltage
battery so that it is available to run the vehi-
cle in electr ic mode .
This reduces exposure of the high voltage
battery to cold temperat ures . The required
temperature range for the high voltage bat-
tery will then be reached more quickly after
you sta rt driving .

This message appears if the high voltage battery
charge level is too low. The vehicle can no longer
be started with its own power. The high voltage
battery must be charged with a charger or the ve­
h icle must be jump started with the aid of anoth­
er vehicle.
After the connecting the charger or jumper ca­
bles, the ignition must be turned off for approxi­
mately two minutes and then turned on again .
After no more than one m inute, one of the fol­
lowing indicator lights turns on in the instrument
cluste r display .
B Charging battery. Please wait ...
If the indicator light turns on and this message
appears, the high voltage battery is charg ing or
the vehicle is be ing jump started with assistance
from another veh icle .
If the 12 volt batteries are dead, the- indi­
cator light turns on . The charging procedure
takes longer in this case because the 12 volt bat­
ter ies are charged first. The procedure goes fast­
er with the ig nition sw itched off.
Vehicle ready to start.
This message appears if the charging procedure
was successful. The vehicle may be started again .
Battery could not be charged enough to start
vehicle .
This message appears if the charging procedure
was not successful or it was interrupted. Th is
may happen if the charger or the battery in the
veh icle that is assisting is too weak.
If the veh icle
can not be started, see an authorized repa ir facil i­
ty for ass istanc e.
(D Tips
-The charger should deliver a current of at
l east 30 A. Otherwise charging the high
voltage battery will take considerably Ion-

ger. A current between 50 A and 70 A is ide ­
al.
- Th e veh icle that is assisting should be some­
what within the same vehicle class when
jump starting a vehicle. A smaller vehicle's
battery may be drained.
- After approximately 30 minutes, the charg­
ing procedure ends because the ignit ion is
automatically turned off. If you would like
to cont inue to charge the battery, turn the
ignition on again.
Vehicle transport

The following contains information you should
know about transporting your vehicle.
The lithium ion battery (SANYO 72 UF 121 285)
installed in your vehicle has passed test 38.3 in
accordance with UN handbook tests and criteria.
The vehicle may be transported with the battery
i nstalled as conventional class 9 hazardous mate­
rials without addit ional officia l consent for a ir
and sea transportation (current law !CAO-TI and
IMDG-Code 01.01.2012).
