Adjusting seat back angle

Folding seat back up and down (th ird row
seating)
The third row seating is suitable for persons up to 1. 6
meters (5 ft 3 in) in height.

-Lift the Lever -Arrow- ~ fig. 80 and raise the seat back
until it Locks.
- Raise the head restraint until it locks.
Folding seat back down
-Lift the Lever -Arrow- ~ fig. 81 and fold the seat back
down completely until it locks .
- The head restraint is automatically tipped down.
& WARNING
• Only persons up to a height of 5 feet 3 inches (1.6 m) may be
carried on the seats in the third row.
• Exercise caution when folding the seat backs up and down .
Inattentiveness or carelessness when folding the seat back up and
down can pinch fingers or hands.
• Always check whether the latch is fully engaged by pulling the
seat back forward. •
Head restraints
Front head restraints
The head restraints must be adjusted properly to provide
protection .

The head restraints on the front seats can be adjusted to
provide safe support to head and neck at the optimum
height. When optimally adjusted, the top of the restraint
should be level with the top of the head~

Raising head restraint
- Grasp the side of the head restraint with both hands.
- Adjust the head restraints so that the top of the head
restraint is
at least level with your eyes or higher

Lowering head restraint
-Grasp the sides of the head restraint with both hands.
Press the button~

(I) Tips
Correctly adjusted head restraints and safety belts are an extremely
effective combination of safety features.•
Outer rear head restraints
Passengers may only be carried in the outer rear seats
when the head restraint is raised.

If the outer rear seat is not occupied, you can lower the head
restraint to obtain better vision to the rear.
- Pull on the loop to fold the head restraint down~ fig. 83.
- Push the head restraint up again until it latches with an
audible click.

• The head restraints for the outer seats in the second row must
be folded up when persons are being carried in the third row
seating*· danger of injury!

Passengers may only be carried in the center rear seat if the head restraint has been raised to its uppermost posi­
tion.

When the rear seats are not occupied, you can lower the head
restraints (park position) and obtain better rearward vision.
Moving the head restraints to the "in-use
position"
- Grasp the sides of the head restraint w ith both hands.
- Move the head restraint to the uppermost position
=> fig. 84 until it latches (in-use position).
Moving the head restraints to the "park
position"
-Press the button -Arrow- and at the same time push the
head restraint down until it is lying against the rear seat
back (park position).
& WARNING
• Driving without head restraints or with head restraints that are
not properly adjusted dramatically increases the risk of serious or
fatal neck injury.
• Read and heed all WARNINGS=>
page 193. •

Armrest
The armrest contains a storage compartment and two
cup holders.

compartment.
A maximum of two beverages can be accommodated in the armrest.
T he second cup holder is lo cated under a cover.

hot coffee or hot tea, in the vehicle while it is moving. In case of ..

Expanding Luggage compartment
To expand the luggage compartment, the seat backs can
be folded forward separately or together.
Folding the seatback forward

- Pull the lever up=> fig . 87. The seat back pivots fo rward .
- Allow the seat back to latch in the lowermost position .
Raising the seatback
- Pull the lever up=> fig. 87 and raise the seat back unt il i t

Folding center seat back down
-Press the release button=> fig. 88 . The red mar k on the
release lever is v isible.
- Tilt t he seatback forward.
Raising center seat back
- Raise the seatback until it is secure ly latched =>& . It is
securely latched when the red mark on the release button
is no longer v isible .
The center seat back can be folded forward separately. Us ing th is
loading option , long objects (e.g. skis) can be carried in the interior .
& WARNING
• The ba ckre st mu st alway s be securely latched so that the safety
belt of the center seating pos ition can work proper ly to help
prote ct the o ccupant .
• The back rest must be secu rely latched in position so that no
item s contained in the luggage compartment can slide forward
upon sudden bra king.
• Alway s check whether the latch i s fully engaged by pulling the
se at ba ck forwar d.
• On vehicl es with th ird row seating *, the center s eat ba ck must
be in the upright position and se curely latched when perso ns are
being carried in the third row seat s· danger injury!
• Ne ver allow safety belts to become d am aged by being caught
i n door or seat hardware.
• Torn or fra yed safety belts can tear and damaged belt hardware
can break in a crash. Inspect the belt s periodically . B elts showing •

In a co llision, the laws of physics mean that eve n smaller items that
a re lo ose in the vehicle w ill turn in to heavy mis siles th at can c ause
ser ious injury. Items in the vehicle pick up kinet ic en ergy w hich varies
with the ve hicle an d th e we ight of the item. Vehi cle speed is the most
signif ica nt factor .
For example, in a frontal collis ion at a speed of 30 mph (48 km/ h),
t he force s acti ng on a 10- lb
(4 .5 kg) object a re a bout 20 times the
normal weight of t he item. T his means that t he weight of t he item
wou ld su ddenly be t he e quiva le nt of abou t 200 lbs (9 0 k g). One can
easily imagine the injur ies that an item of that weight flying freely
t hroug h the passenger com par tment can cause in a collis ion at a
speed considered relative ly low .
& WARNING
Weak , damaged or improper straps used to secure items to tie­
downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
• Always use suitable r etaining straps and properly secure items
to the tie -downs
in the luggage compartment to help prevent
items from shifting or flying forward .
• When the rear seat backrest is folded down, always use suit·
able retaining straps and properly secure items to the tie-downs in
the luggage compartment to help prevent items from flying
forward into the passenger compartment.
• Never attach a child safety seat tether strap to a tie-down .•

Cargo net
The cargo net prevents light objects from sliding around
in the luggage compartment.

- Next , hang the front hooks in the fastening eyelets .
- Then, hang the
rear hooks in the fastening eyelets.
& WARNING
For strength-related reasons, the mounting hooks can only be
used to secure objects weighing up to 10 lb. (5 kg). Heavier
objects will not be adequately secured -there is a risk of injury. •
Retractable luggage compartment cover
The luggage compartment cover keeps luggage or other
objects out of view.

Extending front Luggage compartment cover
- Pull the rolled-up cover evenly towards the front of the
vehicle.
- Hang the ends of the cover in the attaching eyes on the left

- Pull the rolled-up cover evenly towards the rear of the
vehicle using the handle .

seat back.

- Allow the cover to ro ll up slow ly.
Removing the Luggage compartment cover
- Pull t he lever in the direc tion of the arrow==> page 96,
fig. 92 and at the same time lift the cover up and out .
Installing the Luggage compartment cover
-Lay the cov er i n the left retaine r in the side trim and then
press it in to the right re tainer until it la tches.
& WARNING
Whenever driving, nev er place any hard or he avy objects on the
luggage compartment or allow pets to sit on the luggage
compa rtment cover . They could become a hazard to v ehicle occu­
pants in the e vent of sudden b raking o r in an accident.

• Make sure that the heating wires in the rear lid do not get
damaged by objects scraping agai nst them .
• The two inner attach ing eyes on the left and right in the seatback
=> page 96, fig. 9 1 (D are not suitable for tying down cargo - r isk of

[ i ] Tips
• You can use the luggage compartment cover to sto re light we ight
clothi ng or articles but do not leave any heavy o r sharp objects in the
pockets of the clothing.
• Remember that plac ing clothing or articles on the luggage
compartment cover can block the driver's vision i n the rea r view
m irror. This also applies especially when you have to transport large
objects.
• So that stale a ir can escape from the vehicle be sure not to cover
the vent ilation slot between the rear lid a nd the luggage compa rt­
ment cover .•
Protective liner
D ir ty or wet objects can be transported under the cargo
floor in a protective tray .

- Lay the items in the protective tray.
Folding the cargo floor up
- Open the rear lid .
- Fold the ca rgo floor up to the seatback with the help of the
handle @.
Removing the cargo floor , installing
- Open the rear lid.
- Fold the cargo floor up to the seatback with the help of the
handle @.
- To remove, pull the entire cargo floor out of the guides
-arrow-~ fig. 94 in the direction of the rear of the vehicle . -
To install the cargo floor, set the front of it into the guides
and push it in the direction of the seatback until it
engages .
You can also s tore small items under t he cargo floo r.
The storage room in the protective tray can be enlarged by folding the
cargo floor forward or removing it.
T he p rotective tray can be removed upwa rd by the grip.
On vehicles with
6 or 7 seat s* the cargo floor cannot be folded up,
only raised. If the cargo f loor is removed, the hooks must be pushed
into the guides under the third row seating when the cargo floor is re­
installed.
& WARNING
When th e cargo fl oor i s folde d upright , the item s being tran s­
p orted must no t exc eed the ma ximum ca rgo height, 2 /3 of the
cargo floor sp ace with the floor folded forw ard , o r a weight of
a bout 33 lb. ( 15 kg ).
(I] Tips
We recommend that you use a tie-down strap to secure objects to the
tie-down eyelets on the right and left sides of the vehicle.•
