General recommendations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only provide
maximum protection if the front seats are correctly
adju sted.
Th ere a re various ways of adjusting t he front seats to provide safe and
comfortable support for the driver and the front passenger . Ad just
your seat properly so that :
• you can easily and quickly reach a ll the switc hes and contro ls in the
ins trumen t pa nel
• your body is properly supported thus reducing phys ica l stress and
fatigue
• the safety be lts and airbag system can offer maximum protection
=>
page 209 .
In the following sections, you w ill see exact ly how you can best ad just
your sea ts .
Th ere are special regulations a nd instr uctions for install ing a child
safety seat on the front passenger's sea t. Always follow the informa ­
tion regarding child safety p rovided in=>
page 231, "Child Safety ".
& WARNING
Incorrect seating posit ion of the dri ver and all other passengers
can result in seriou s personal injury.
• Always keep your feet on the floor when the vehicle is in
motion -never put your feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the window o r on top of the seat cush ion. This applies especially
to the passengers.
If your seating po sition is incorrect, you
increase the ri sk of injury in the case of sudden braking or an acci-

dent . If the airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect ,
this could result in per sonal injury or even death .
• It is important for both the dri ver and front passenger to keep
a distan ce of at least 10 inche s (25 cm) between themselves and
the steering wheel and /or instrument panel. If you 're sitting any
closer than this , the airbag system cannot protect you properly. In
addition, the front seats and head restraints must be adjusted to
your body height so that they can give you maximum protection .
• Always try to keep as much distance as possible between your­
self and the steering wheel or instrument panel.
• Do not adjust the driver's or front passenger 's seat while the
vehicle is moving. You r seat may move unexpectedly , causing
sudden loss of vehicle control and personal injury . If you adjust
your seat while the vehicle is moving , you are out of position. •
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for saf e and
re lax ed driving.
W e recomme nd that you a djust the drive r's sea t in the
f ollowing man ner :
- Ad just the seat in fore and aft direction so that you can
easily pus h the pedals to the floor w hile keeping your
knees slightly bent=>

- Adjust the seatback so that when yo u sit with yo ur back
agai nst t he seatback , you can st ill grasp t he top of the
steering w heel. ..,

Adjusting the seat
Position, angle and shape of the seat can be adjusted
electrically to ensure safe and comfortable seating.
Read and follow the warning notices=> & before you adjust
your seat .
Fore-and-aft adjustment
- Push the switch@ forward or backward=> page 84,
fig. 74.
Adjusting seat height
-Pull or push the switch@ up or down.
Front seat cushion up/ down
-Press the switch@ at the front up or down.
Rear seat cushion up/ down
-Press the switch@ at the rear up or down.
Adjusting seat back angle
-Push the switch @forward or backward .
Adjusting the curvature of the lumbar
support
- Push the switch plate © forward or backward to increase
or reduce the curvature.
Adjusting the height of the lumbar support
- Push the switch plate © up or down to position the curva­
ture higher or lower.

& WARNING
•
Adjust the driver's seat only when the vehicle is stationary. You
risk an accident otherwise.
• The power adjustment for the front seats also works with the
ignition switched off or with the ignition key removed. For this reason, children should never be left unattended in the vehicle -
they could be injured!
• Exercise caution when adjusting the seat height. Unsupervised
or careless seat adjustment can pinch fingers or hands causing
injuries.
• While the vehicle is moving, the seat backs of the front seats
must not be inclined too far to the rear because the effectiveness
of the safety belts and the airbag system is severely compromised
- there is a risk of injury.
• To reduce the risk of injury
in the case of sudden braking or
accident, front passengers must never ride in a moving vehicle
with the seatback reclined. Safety belts and the airbag system
only offer maximum protection when the seatback is upright and
the safety belts are properly positioned on the body. The more the
seatback is reclined, the greater the risk of personal injury from an
incorrect seating position and improperly positioned safety
belts. •

Seat memory
Applies to veh icles: with seat memory
Driver's seat memory
The seat adjustment settings for two drivers can be
stored using the memory buttons in the driver's door.

In addition to the setting for the driver's seat, the settings for the
steering column* and both exterior mirrors can be stored.
Storing and re calli ng setting s
Using the memory buttons 1 and 2, you can store and recall the
settings for two different drivers => fig . 76 .
T he current settings are also automatically stored on the remote
control key being used when the vehicle is locked. When the vehicle is
unlocked, the settings stored on the remote contro l key being used
a re automatically recalled. This function has to be activated in the
MMI
=> page 88, "Activat ing remote control key memory ".
T urning se at m em ory on and off
If the [ ON/OFF] switch is depressed , the seat memory is inoperative .
The word
OFF next to the [ ON/OFF] switch illuminates.
All the stored settings are retained. We recommend using the
[ ON/OFF ] switch and deact ivat ing the seat memory if the vehicle is

only going to be used temporarily by a driver whose settings are not
going to be stored .•

Storing and recalling a seat position
Before you can store or recall your seat position, the
(ON/OFF) button must be engaged (down) .
Storing settings
-Adjust the driver 's seat => page 84.
- Adjust the steering column*=> page 123.
Adjust both outside mirrors=> page 79. In the tilt -down
position, the passenger mirror can be adjusted to the
preferred position and saved in the seat memory.
- Press the
(SET) button and hold it down. At the same
time, press one of the memory buttons for at least one second.
- Release the buttons. The settings are now stored under
the corresponding memory button.
Rec alling settings
- Driver's door open -press the desired memory button.
- Driver's door closed -press the corresponding memory
button until the stored position is reached .
Successful storage is confirmed audib ly and by the light in the [ SET]
button illuminating.
When the vehicle is
loc ked , the current settings are stored and
assigned to the remote control key. But the settings stored on
memory buttons 1 and 2 are not deleted. They can be recalled at any

Entry assist (second row seating)
The entry assist makes it easier for occupants to reach
the third row seating*.

The head restraints on the front seats can be adjusted to
provide safe support to head and neck at the optimum
height. When optimally adjusted, the top of the restraint
should be level with the top of the head~

Raising head restraint
- Grasp the side of the head restraint with both hands.
- Adjust the head restraints so that the top of the head
restraint is
at least level with your eyes or higher

Lowering head restraint
-Grasp the sides of the head restraint with both hands.
Press the button~

(I) Tips
Correctly adjusted head restraints and safety belts are an extremely
effective combination of safety features.•
Outer rear head restraints
Passengers may only be carried in the outer rear seats
when the head restraint is raised.

If the outer rear seat is not occupied, you can lower the head
restraint to obtain better vision to the rear.
- Pull on the loop to fold the head restraint down~ fig. 83.
- Push the head restraint up again until it latches with an
audible click.

• The head restraints for the outer seats in the second row must
be folded up when persons are being carried in the third row

Adjusting the armrest

Spilled hot liquid can cause an accident and personal injury.
• Never carry any beverage containers with hot liquids, such as
hot coffee or hot tea, in the vehicle while it is moving . In case of
an accident, sudden braking or other vehicle movement, hot liquid
could spill, causing scalding burn s. Spilled hot liquid can al so
cause an accident and personal injury.

cause injury in an accident .

In a co llision, the laws of physics mean that eve n smaller items that
a re lo ose in the vehicle w ill turn in to heavy mis siles th at can c ause
ser ious injury. Items in the vehicle pick up kinet ic en ergy w hich varies
with the ve hicle an d th e we ight of the item. Vehi cle speed is the most
signif ica nt factor .
For example, in a frontal collis ion at a speed of 30 mph (48 km/ h),
t he force s acti ng on a 10- lb
(4 .5 kg) object a re a bout 20 times the
normal weight of t he item. T his means that t he weight of t he item
wou ld su ddenly be t he e quiva le nt of abou t 200 lbs (9 0 k g). One can
easily imagine the injur ies that an item of that weight flying freely
t hroug h the passenger com par tment can cause in a collis ion at a
speed considered relative ly low .
& WARNING
Weak , damaged or improper straps used to secure items to tie­
downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
• Always use suitable r etaining straps and properly secure items
to the tie -downs
in the luggage compartment to help prevent
items from shifting or flying forward .
• When the rear seat backrest is folded down, always use suit·
able retaining straps and properly secure items to the tie-downs in
the luggage compartment to help prevent items from flying
forward into the passenger compartment.
• Never attach a child safety seat tether strap to a tie-down .•

- Pull the ends of the cover out of the attachi ng eyes in the
seat back.
- Allow the cover to ro ll up slow ly.
Rolling up rear Luggage compartment cover
- Pull t he rod out o f the op enings in t he side trim panels.
- Allow the cover to ro ll up slow ly.
Removing the Luggage compartment cover
- Pull t he lever in the direc tion of the arrow==> page 96,
fig. 92 and at the same time lift the cover up and out .
Installing the Luggage compartment cover
-Lay the cov er i n the left retaine r in the side trim and then
press it in to the right re tainer until it la tches.
& WARNING
Whenever driving, nev er place any hard or he avy objects on the
luggage compartment or allow pets to sit on the luggage
compa rtment cover . They could become a hazard to v ehicle occu­
pants in the e vent of sudden b raking o r in an accident.

• Make sure that the heating wires in the rear lid do not get
damaged by objects scraping agai nst them .

[ i ] Tips
• You can use the luggage compartment cover to sto re light we ight
clothi ng or articles but do not leave any heavy o r sharp objects in the
pockets of the clothing.
• Remember that plac ing clothing or articles on the luggage
compartment cover can block the driver's vision i n the rea r view
m irror. This also applies especially when you have to transport large
objects.
• So that stale a ir can escape from the vehicle be sure not to cover
the vent ilation slot between the rear lid a nd the luggage compa rt­
ment cover .•
Protective liner
D ir ty or wet objects can be transported under the cargo
floor in a protective tray .

Ski sack
The ski sack allows a maximum of 4 pairs of skis or 2
snowboards to be carried inside the vehicle.

unfold it.
- Place the empty sack over the lowered seatback so that the end with the zip fastener is in the luggage compart­
ment .
- Load objects from the luggage compartment into the ski

Securing
- Insert the ski sack strap©==> fig. 95 into the center seat
belt buckle @.
- Pull the securing strap tight by the free end of the belt ©.

-Vehicles with 6 seats*: The ski sack has two straps with
hooks on the underside. Hang the hooks into the luggage
compartment by the rear fastening eyes and pull the
securing strap tight by the free end ©-
Storage
- Release the securing strap for the sack.
- Pull the sack to the rear over the folded down seatback.
- Raise the seatback until it is securely latched .
- F old up the empty sack.
- Stow the ski sack in the luggage compartment so that it
cannot slide around .
& WARNING
• The ski sack is intended only for the transportation of skis,
snowboards and other light objects. To reduce the risk of serious
personal injury never transport heavy or pointed objects in the ski
sack.
• When braking rapidly or during an accident the load could be
displaced and cause injury to occupants.
• Sharp edges on the load must be covered for protection.
Always fasten the belt tightly around the sack and its contents
:::} fig. 95.
(I] Tips
Never stow the ski sack away if it's wet or damp (for example, snow
melting from skis). Let it dry completely be fore you stow it away. •

Roof rack mounting locations
Roof racks must be installed only at the locations marked
on the roof rails .

Loading the roof rack
Always dist ribu te loads evenly . Make sure anything on
the roof rack is securely tied down.
- A lways distr ibu te the loads o n the roof rack even ly.
- A lways attach items to the roof rack secure ly before you
drive o ff.
The maximum permiss ible roof weight is 220 lb (100 kg ). The roof
we ight is made up o f the weight of the roof rack system and the
we ight of the object being transported .
When using a roof rack system which has a lower load carry ing
capacity, you must not use up th e total max imum permiss ible load
carrying capac ity specified above. Instead, you should load the roof

rack system only to the max imum capacity specified by the manufac­
tu rer of the roof ra ck system.
& WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps u sed to secure item s to the
roof rack can fail during hard braking or in a colli sion and cause
s e riou s personal injury .
• Make sure the roof rack is i nstalled e xactly as spe cified abo ve
~ page 101 .
• Always u se suitable mounting strap s fo r se curing items to the
roof rack to help pre vent items from shifting or fl ying forward .
• Item s on the roof rack mu st alwa ys be secu rel y mounted.
• The use of a roof rac k can negati vely affect the way a vehicle
handle s. Cargo that i s large , he avy , bulky, long or flat will have a
greater negative influence on the vehicle 's a erodynami cs, center
of gr avit y and overall h andling . Alway s drive slowl y, avoid sudden
braking and maneuvers when tran sporting cargo on the roof of
your veh icle .
• Never e xceed the maximum permi ssible load carr ying capacity
of the r oof of your vehicle , the permi ssible a xle weight s and the
permis sible tot al weight of your v ehicl e=>
page 361, "W eights ".
• Alway s drive slowly , avoid sudden braking and maneuver s
when t ran sport ing cargo on th e ro of of y our veh icle.

Make sure that the opened rear lid does not come in contact with the
cargo on the roof .
c£> For the sake of the environment
Sometimes it may be easier to leave a roof rack installed even tho ugh
you a re not using i t. Due to the inc reased air res istance your vehicle
will unnecessarily use more fuel. Remove the roof rack if you are not
going to use it. •
