When a door is unlocked, the driver 's door is
a lways unlocked as we ll.
It depends on the
settings in the central locking menu in the
MMI whether the entire vehicle is unlocked or
only certain doors ¢
page 44.
{O) Tips
If your vehicle has been stand ing for an ex­
tended period, please note the following:
- The proximity sensors are deactivated af-
ter a few days to save power. You then
have to pull on the door handle once to
unlock the vehicle and a second time to
open the veh icle.
- To prevent the battery from being dis­
charged and to preserve your veh icle's
ability to start for as long as possible,
the energy management system gradu­
a lly switches off unnecessary co nven­
i ence f unct io ns.
It is possible that you
will not be able to unlock your vehicle us­
ing these convenience f unctions.
Locking the vehicle
A ppl ies to vehicles: with Conve nie nce key
The vehicle can be locked without operating
the master key.

The vehicle can be locked at any door. The au­
thor ized master key on ly has to be within a
range of about 5 feet (1.5 meters) from the
pa rticular door . T
he selec tor lever must be in the P position,
otherwise the ve hicle cannot be locked .
A WARNING
--When you lock yo ur vehicle from o utside,
nobody - espec ia lly children - shou ld re­
main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when you lock the vehicle from the out­
side the wi ndows cannot be opened from
the inside.
- When you leave the veh icle, always re­
move the ign ition key and take it with
you. This will prevent passengers (chil­
d ren, fo r ex ample) from acci dentally be­
i n g lo cked in the vehicle shou ld they acci­
denta lly press the power locking switch
in the front doors.
- Do not leave ch ildren inside the vehicle
unsupervised. In an emergency it would
be impossible to open the doors from
the o utside witho ut the key.
(J} Tips
It i s no t possible to re -open the doo r fo r a
brief pe riod directly after closing it. This
allows you to ensure that the doo rs are
properly locked.
Anti-theft alarm system
The anti-theft alarm triggers an alarm if any­
one attempts to break into the vehicle.
The anti-theft alarm system triggers an audi­
ble ala rm and turns on the emergency flashe r
if an unautho rized interfe rence with the veh i­
cl e is sensed by the sys tem.
How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched on?
T he anti-theft alarm system is switched on
whe n you lock the ve hicle. The system is ac ti­
vated approximate ly 30 seconds after the ve­
hicle is locked. The indicato r ligh t on top o f
the door trim start flashing rapid ly for 30 sec -
onds and then blink slowly. ..,.

How is the anti-theft alarm system
switched off?
The anti -theft a la rm system is switched off
on ly when you unlock yo ur vehicle. If yo u do
not open a door w ith in 60 seconds after you
have unlocked with the remote control , the
ve hicle w ill lock itse lf again automat ically .
When will the anti-theft alarm sy stem be
triggered?
W hen the ve hicle is locked, the alarm system
mon itors and protects the following parts of
the vehicle:
- engi ne compartment
- lu ggage compartment
- doo rs
- i gnition
When the system is activated, the alarm will be tr iggered if on e of the doo rs, the eng ine
h ood or t he rear lid a re opened, o r if the ig ni­
tion is tur ned on. The anti-t heft alarm sys tem
will also go off when the battery is discon­
nected .
You can a lso tr igge r the alarm by p re ssing t he
P ANIC button o n your remote con trol. T his
will alert other peop le in case of emergency.
Press the
PANIC b utton again to t urn off the
a larm.
How is the anti-theft alarm switched off
when triggered?
The a larm system is switc hed off when you
un lock the vehicle o r whe n the ignition is
sw itched on. The alarm will also switch itself
off when it comes to the end of its cycle.
Emergency flasher and horn
The emergency flas her wi ll blink brief ly and
the hor n sounds when the doors, engine hood
and rear lid are proper ly closed .
If th e emergen cy fl ashe rs do no t blink , or the
horn does no t sound, check the doors, engine
h ood an d rear lid to make sure they are p rop­
erly closed.
If you close a door, t he hood o r
the rear lid w ith the anti-theft alarm sw itched
on, the emergency flashers will b link and the

Reactivating the system after battery
disconnection
If the vehicle battery is disconnected and then
reconnected, the a utomatic closing and open­
ing function wilt not work until it is reactivat­
ed. To reactivate this feature, perform the fol­
lowing steps:
Reactivating close /open feature
., Pull and hold the power window switch until
the window is completely closed .
., Re lease the switch .
., Pull the switch again for one second. The au­
tomatic closing/opening is now reactivated.
Panoramic sliding
sunroof
Description
Applies to vehicles: with Panoramic sliding sunroof
The Panoramic sliding sunroof is comprised of
two individual glass roof segments, which can be adjusted electrically independently of each
other.
The front segment can be tilted and slid open.
The rear segment can be tilted, but it cannot be slid open .
T he Panoramic s liding sunroof is operated by
the driver or passenger when the ignition is on
with a rotary switch (for the front roof seg­
ment) and a rocker switch (rear roof seg­
ment) .
After the ignit ion has been switched off , the
Panoramic sliding sunroof can st ill be opened
or closed for about 10 m inutes . However, as
soon as the dr iver's or passenger's door is
opened, the sw itches for the Pano ramic s lid­
ing sunroof are inoperat ive.
0 Note
You should always close the Panoramic
sliding sunroof when you leave you r vehi­
cle. Sudden rain can drench the interior
equ ipment and damage the electronic con­
venience feat ures in your vehicle .

If you park your vehicle in the sun, we rec­
ommend that you close both sun blinds

Reading lights ~

In the door contact swi tch position (switch @
in the m iddle position), the interior l ights tur n
o n as soon as you unlock the vehicle o r open
the doors . The inte rior lights are also turned
o n when the igni tion key is removed . The light
goes ou t about 30 seconds after the doo rs are
closed. When the veh icle is locked or when
the igni tion is turned on, the i nterior lights
are turned off .
When a door is open, the interior lights are
tu rned off after about 10 minutes to prevent
draining the battery.
T he brigh tness of the lights is cont rolled au­
tomat ic all y by a d imme r when they are
switched on and off.
Rear interior lights
There are reading ligh ts in the rear for the
passengers .

the rear lid switch on and off automatically
when the lid is opened and closed.
@ Tips
If the rear lid remains open longer than 10
minutes, the luggage compartment lights
turn off automatically to prevent the vehi­ cle battery from discharging.
Ambience lighting
App lies to vehicles: with amb ience light ing
The ambience lighting con be adjusted in the
MMI.
• Select : I CARI function button> Systems*
control button > Ambience lighting. Or
• Select :
I CARI function button > Car systems*
control button > Vehicle settings > Interior
lighting .
When the vehicle is unlock ed, the standard
lighting turns on automatically and dims after
approx. 2 minutes, and when the ignition is
turned on it switches off immediately .
The following interior lighting is
controlled:
- Front footwell
- Rear footwell
- Front door panel
- Rear door panel
Vision
Sun visors
Using the sun visors makes driving safer.

Sun visors
The forward visor of the dual sun visor can be
pulled out of its bracket in the center of the
vehicle and swung towards the door. The sun
visor can be extended after it is swung to­
wards the door

Vanity mirror
The vanity mirrors on the sun visors are cov­ ered. When the cover is raised, the mirror
lighting switches on automatically.
It turns
off when the lid is closed or the visor is folded
up again.

Warm and cold Climate control
Description
The air conditioner is fully automatic and is
designed to maintain a comfortable and uni­
form climat e inside the vehicle .
We recommend the following sett ings :
.. Set the temperature to 72 °F (+ 22 °C).
.. Press the
!AUTO ! button.
W ith this setting, you attain maxim um com ­
fort i n the least amount of time. Change this
setting, as desired, to meet yo ur persona l
needs.
The climate controls are a combination o f
heating, venti lation and cooling systems,
which automatica lly reduce humidity and cool
the air inside your vehicle.
The air tempera ture, a ir flow and air distrib u­
tion are automatica lly regu lated to achieve
and maintain the desired passenger compart­
ment temperature as quick ly as possib le.
The system a utomatically compensates for
changes in outside temperature and for the
intensity of the sunlight entering the ve hicle .
We recommend you use the
Automati c mode
¢ page 95 for year-round comfort.
Please note the following:
Turn on the ai r cond itione r to reduce hum idity
i n the vehicle . Thi s also p revents the w indows
from fogging up .
When the outside temperature is high and the
a ir i s very hum id,
c ondensation from the
evapo rator may drip unde r the ve hicle. This is
norma l and does not indicate a leak.
I f the outside temperatu re is low, the fan nor­
mally only switches to a h igher speed once
the eng ine coolan t has warmed up sufficient­
l y.
The air conditioner tempora rily switches off
when you d rive off from a s tandstill using full
thro ttle to s ave eng ine power. T
he compressor a lso switches off if the coo l­
ant temperature is too high , so that the en­
gine can be adequately cooled under extreme
l oads.
Air pollutant s filter
The air pollutan ts f ilter (a comb ined particle
filte r and activated charcoa l filter) reduces o r
prevents outside air po llution (dust, or pollen)
from enter ing the veh icle. The air is a lso fil­
tered in a ir recirculation mode .
The air pollutants fi lter m ust be changed at
the interva ls specified in yo ur War ranty
&
Maintenance booklet, so that the a ir cond i­
tioner can properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high
air poll ution, the filter may need to be
changed more frequently than specif ied in
your Audi Warranty
& Maintenance book let. If
in doubt, ask your authorized Audi Service Ad­
visor for advice .
Key coded settings
The air conditioner settings selected are auto­
matically stored and assigned to the key be ing
used. When the vehicle is started, the air con­
ditioner automa tically selects the settings as­
s igned to that key . This way every driver will
mainta in his/her own pe rsonal settings and
does not have to reset them manually .
If a different dr iver uses your key and changes
the a ir cond itione r settings, the latest adjust ­
ments will e rase and replace the sett ings you
have stored.
Energy man agement
To prevent the battery from being discharged
and to restore the ba lance of energy, compo­
nents which require large amounts of energy
are temporarily cut back or switched off
¢ page 229. Heating systems in pa rticular re­
quire a grea t deal of ene rgy.
If yo u notice , fo r
example, that the seat* or rear window hea t­
ing is not heating, they have been temporar ily
cut back or switched off by
energy manage­
ment .

Side assist's detection area is designed to cov­
e r l anes of standard w idth to the left and
r ight of your travel lane, depending on wheth­
er you dr ive in the center of your lane or closer
to the edge.
I f you drive in narrow lanes, s ide ass ist's de­
tec tion a rea may a lso incl ude other lanes -es­
pec ia lly if you tend to drive on the edge of
your lane

sors a re located . If side ass ist functions are

th ing t hat may be blocking the sensors.
If no vehicle is detected for a longer per iod of
t ime wh ile dr iv ing, s ide ass ist w ill also switch

vehicle 's battery charge be ing low), side assist

towing
The radar sensor's view is limited when tow­
ing a tra iler. For vehicles with a factory instal­
led tow ing hitch or a trailer hitch that was in­
stalled later according to facto ry specifica­
tions, s ide ass ist is automatically deact ivated
as soon as the ele ctrical connection to the
trailer's e lectrical socke t is made, and this sta­
tus message appears in the instrument clus­
ter display. Deactivation cannot be guaran ­
teed when using a retrofitted towing hitch
that was
not installed according to factory
specifications.

ing a screwdriver or similar object, press the
rocker sw itch down and hold it in that pos i­
t ion.
• Now press the release button and move the
selector lever to the N position .
The selector lever can only be moved from the P position if the key is in the lock and the igni ­
tion is sw itched on .
If the power supply fails
(for example, the battery is discharged) a nd
the vehicle must be p ushed or towed , move
the selector leve r to the N pos ition first using
the emergency release .

Repair, care and disposal of the airbags
Parts of the airbag system are installed at
many different places on your Audi. Installing,
removing, servici ng or repairing a part in an
area of the vehicle can damage a part of an
airbag system and prevent that system from
working properly in a co llision.
There are some important th ings you have to
know to make sure that the effect iveness of
the system will not be impa ired and that dis­
carded components do not cause injury or po l­
lute the env ironment.
_& WARNING
Improper ca re, servicing and repair proce­
dures can increase the risk of personal in ­
jury and death by preventing an airbag from deploy ing when needed or deploying
an airbag unexpected ly:
- Never cover, obstr uct, o r change the
steering wheel horn pad or airbag cover
or the instrument pane l or modify them
in any way.
- Never attach any objects such as cu­
pholders or telephone mountings to the
surfaces covering the airbag units.
- For cleaning the horn pad or instrument
pane l, use only a soft, dry cloth or one
moistened w ith plain water. Solvents or
cleaners co uld damage the airbag cover
o r change the stiffness or strength of the
material so tha t the airbag cannot de­
ploy and protec t prope rly.
- Never repa ir, adjust, or change any par ts
of the airb ag sys tem.
- All wo rk on the stee ring wheel, inst ru­
ment pane l, front seats or electrical sys­
tem (incl uding t he inst allation of aud io
equipment, cellular telephones and CB
radios, etc.) must be performed by a
qualified technician who has the training
and special equipment necessary.

-For any work on the airbag system, we
strongly recommend that yo u see your
author ized Audi dealer or qualif ied work­
shop.
- Never modify the front bumper or parts
of the vehicle body.
-Always make sure that the s ide a irbag
can inflate without interference:
- Never install seat covers or rep lace­
ment upholstery over the fron t seat­
backs tha t have not been specifically
approved by Audi.
- Never use addi tional seat cushions that
cover the areas where the side a irbags
i nflate.
- Damage to the orig inal seat cove rs or
to the seam in the area of the side ai r­
bag module must a lways be repaired
i mmediately by an author ized Audi
dealer.
- The airbag system can be activated only
once. After an airbag has inflated, it must be replaced by an authorized Aud i
deale r or qualified technician who has
the technical information, training and
specia l equipment necessary .
- The airbag system can be deployed only
once . After an airbag has been deployed,
it must be replaced with new replace­
men t pa rts designed and approved espe­
cially fo r you r A udi model version. Re­
placemen t of complete airbag systems
or airbag components mus t be per ­
formed by qualified workshops on ly .
Make sure that any airbag serv ice action
is entered in your Audi Warranty
& Main­
tenance booklet under
AIRBAG REPLACE­
MENT RECORD.
- For safety reasons in severe accidents,
the alte rnator and starter are sepa rated
from the veh icle battery with a pyrotech­
nic circuit inte rrupte r.
- W ork on the pyrotechnic c ircuit inter ­
rupter m ust only be pe rformed by a
qualified dea le r - risk of an accident!
- If the vehicle or the circuit interr upter
is scrapped, all applicable safety pre­
cautions must be fo llowed.

Replacing wh eels/ tire s
Vehicles w ith all-wheel drive must a lways
have tires of the same size. Also avoid tires
with different tread depths. For details see
page ¢
page 284, New tires and replacing
tires and wheels .
.&_ WARNING
Always adjust your driving to road and traf­
fic conditions . Do not let the extra safety
afforded by all-wheel dr ive tempt you into
tak ing extra risks.
-Although the all-wheel dr ive is very ef­
fective, always remember that braking
capacity is limited by t ire traction . You
sho uld therefore not dr ive at excessive
speeds on icy or s lippery road surfaces.
- On wet road su rfaces, be careful not to
dr ive too fast because t he front wheels
cou ld beg in to s lide on top of the wa ter
(aquaplaning). If this sho uld occ ur, you
w ill have no warning from a sudden in­
crease in engine speed as with a front­
whee l drive vehicle. A lways drive at
speeds wh ich are suited to the road con­
ditions -risk of c rash.
Energy management
Starting ability is optimized
Energy management controls the distribution
of electrical energy and thus optimizes the
availability of electrical energy for starting
the engine.
I f a vehicle w it h a conventional energy system
i s not driven for a long pe riod of time, the bat­
tery is disch arged by idling c urrent cons umers
(e .g. immobilizer) . In ce rtain c ircumstances it
can result in there being insufficient energy
ava ilab le to start the engine .
I n tell igen t energy management in your vehi ­
cle hand les the d istribution of electrical ener ­
gy . Starting abi lity is marked ly imp roved and
the life of the battery is extended.

Basica lly, energy management consis ts of
batte ry diagnosi s, idling cur rent manage­
ment
and dynamic energy management.
Battery diagnosis
B attery diagnosis continuously de termines
the state of the battery . Sensors determine
batte ry voltage, battery current and battery
temperature . This determines the current
state of charge and the power of the battery.
Idling current management
Id lin g cur ren t man agement reduces energy
consumption while the vehi cle is standing.
With the ig nition switched off, it controls the
energy supply to the various electrical compo­ nents. Data from battery diagnos is is cons id­
ered.
Depend ing on the battery's state of cha rge,
individual cons umers are gradually turned off
to prevent excessive discharge of the battery
and thus maintain starting capability.
Dynamic energy manag ement
While the vehicle is being driven, dynamic en ­
ergy management distrib utes the energy ge n­
erated according to the needs of the individ u­
al components. It regulates consumption, so
that more electrical energy is not being used
than is be ing generated and ensures an opti­
mal state of charge for the battery .

-But even e nergy management cannot
negate the limits of physics. Consider
t hat the powe r and l ife of a bat tery are
l imited.
