The ill umi nat ion fo r th e i nstru me nt cl uster
lights up whe never yo u switch on the i gni ­
tion with t he
vehicle headlights off . As
the daylight fades, the instrument cluster illumi nat ion likewise dims automatically
a n d w ill go out completely when t he out­
side light is very low. This feat ure is meant
to remind you to switch on the headlights
w hen o utside lig ht con dit io ns become
poor.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The eng ine coolant gauge q page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when the ignition is on. To p revent
damage to you r engine, please note the fol­
lowing impor tant po ints:
Engine cold
As long as the needle remains at or close to
the bottom of the gauge, the engi ne still has
not reached its operat ing temperature . Avoid
high eng ine speeds, heavy eng ine loads and
heavy th rottle a pplicat io ns.
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operat ing
temperature, the needle w ill move into the
midd le of the gauge and rema in the re. If th e
engine is worki ng ha rd at high outside tem­
peratures, the needle may rise up. This is no
need to worry as long as the. warni ng lig ht
i n the i nstr ument cluster does not ill uminate.
Warning light in the instrument cluster
When the. warning lig ht in the instr ument
cluster s tarts to flash, th is can mean one of
two things : either the coo lant

Starting the Auto-Check sequence
The Auto-Check system ¢ page 30 constant­
l y monitors certai n ind iv idual funct ions and
components of the ve hicl e when the ignit ion
is t urned on and when the vehicle is moving.
W ith the ignition turned on, you can start the
"Au to-C hec k seque nce" by p res sing the
I CH ECKi button. Yo u ca n pe rform an A uto­
Check sequence when the vehi cle is stationary
and the ign ition is turned on or when the vehi­
cle is mov ing not faster than
3 mph (5 km/h).
The number of keys progr ammed to the vehi­
cle is also displayed. The disp lay
3 \3 indicates
that th ree keys have been programmed . This
allows yo u to make sure you have rece ived a ll
of the keys when you purchase a used vehicle.
F or exam ple, if you on ly receive two keys, you
should take those keys to your a uth orized
Aud i dea ler to have the miss ing key deactivat­
ed so it cannot be used. You sho uld also re­
port the m issi ng key to your insurance compa­
ny.
Calling up the driver informati on
A yellow or red symbol appears in the instru­
ment cluster display, usua lly w ith a driver
message . T he driver message display disap­
pears after about 5 seconds. The driver mes­
sage can be displayed agai n by briefly press ­
in g the
!CHECK I button.
Setting the speed warning
By pressing the ICHECK I button briefly, yo u
can set thres ho ld 1 of the speed warning
while you are driving
o page 29 . By main­
tain ing press ure on the
I CHECK I button, you
de lete th e warning threshold .
Instrument cluster illumination
The basic brightness of the illumination for
the instruments, the center console and the
display can be adjusted.

A lig ht sensor in the instrument cl uster con­
tro ls t he illumination for the instrument clus­
te r, the center conso le and the displays . In a
bright env ironment, us ing the b uttons to
c hange the brightness has no effect .
{l) Tips
The illumination for the inst rument cluster
lights up w henever you switch on the igni­
tion with the vehicle headlights off. As the
day light fades, the inst rument cluste r illu­
mination l ikewise dims automa tica lly and
will go out comp let ely when the o utsi de
li g ht is very low. T his feature is meant t o
r emi nd you t o switch on t he he adlight s
whe n outs ide lig ht con ditions become
p oor .

This remi nder appea rs along with the !!I sym­
bo l if the maste r key is removed from the ve­
hi cle with the engine running . It is intended
to remind you (e.g . when changing drivers)
not to continue the journey without the mas­
ter key .
I f the master key is no longer in the vehicle,
you cannot switch off the ignition after stop­ p ing the engine and yo u also cannot start the
engine again. What is more, you cannot lock
the vehicle from the outside.

Switching the headlights on and off
In the "AUTO" position, a light sensor auto­
matically switches the head -and taillights on
and off in response to light conditions .

Switching off the lights
... Turn the light switch to 0.
The headlights only work when the ignition is
switched on. While starting the engine or
when switching off the ignition, the head­
lights will go off and on ly the side marker
lights will be on.
After starting the engine, the headlights are
automatically adjusted* to the load and angle
of the vehicle (for example, during accelera­
tion, braking). This prevents oncoming traff ic
from experiencing unnecessary headlight
glare from your headlights. If the
system is not ope rating properly, a
warn ing symbol in the Auto-Check Control is
displayed

Automatic headlight control
In the switch position AUTO the automatic
headlight control
is turned on. The low
beams and tail lights are turned on automati­
cally through
a light sensor as soon as ambi­
ent brightness (e .g . when driving into
a tun­
nel) falls below
a value preset at the factory .
When ambient brightness increases again,
the low beams are turned off again automati­
cally ¢

In the AUTO position the low beams are
switched off automatically when the ignition
is turned off.
Light Sensor Malfunction
In the event of a light sensor malfunction , the
driver is notified in the instrument cluster dis­
play:
£I Automatic headlights / automatic wipers
defective
For safety reasons the low beams are turned
on permanently with the sw itch in
AUTO.
However, you can conti nue to turn the lights
on and off using the light switch . Have the ..,.

light sensor checked as soon as possible at an
authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop.
A WARNING
- Daytime running lights and automatic
headlights are only intended to assist
the driver. They do not relieve the driver
of his responsibility to check the head­
lights and to turn them on manually ac­
cording to the current light and visibility
conditions. For example, fog cannot be
detected by the light sensors*. So always
switch on the headlights
~D under these
weather conditions and when driving in
the dark.
- Crashes can happen when you cannot see
the road ahead and when you cannot be
seen by other motorists. Always turn on
the headlights so that you can see ahead
and so that others can see your car from
the back.
- Please obey all laws when using the
lighting systems described here.
@ Tips
-With the switch in AUTO front fog lights
and rear fog lights cannot be turned on in addition.
- The light sensor for headlight control is
located in the rear view mirror mount.
You should therefore not apply any stick­
ers to the windshield in this area in order
to prevent malfunctions or failures.
- Some exterior lighting functions can be
adjusted ¢

-When you remove your key from the igni­
tion while the vehicle's lights are turned
on, a buzzer sounds as long as the driv­
er's door is open.
- In cool or damp weather, the inside of
the headlights, turn signals and tail
lights can fog over due to the tempera­
ture difference between the inside and
outside. They will clear shortly after
M "' switching them on. This does not affect 0
~ the service life of the lighting.

Adjusting exterior lighting
The functions are set in the MMI.

Coming home (Lights when leaving car),
Leaving home (Lights when unlocking car)
The coming home function illuminates the
area outside the vehicle when you turn the ig­
nition off and open the driver's door. Depend­
ing on vehicle equipment, the function can be
switched on and off or the length of ti me the lights remain on* can be adjusted .
The leaving home illuminates the area outside
the vehicle when you unlock the vehicle . This
function can be switched on and off .
The Coming home and Leaving home func­
tions only operate when it is dark and the light switch is in the
AUTO position.
Daytime running lights
USA models: The daytime running lights can
be turned on or off using this function.
Canada models: The function cannot be
turned
off. It is activated automatically each
time the ignition is turned on. This menu item is shown "greyed out" .

As soon as the reverse gea r is engaged and
the front wipe rs are turned on and operat ing
at the same time, the rear wipe r also turns on
automatically.
A WARNING
Wipe r blades are crucial for safe d riving!
On ly in good condition are they able to
clear the windows properly to provide un­
restricted visibility. Worn or frayed wipe r
blades are a safety hazard! ¢

Replacing windshield wiper blades
CD Note
In freezing or near freezing condit ions:
- Always check that the wiper blades are
not frozen to the glass before you turn
the wiper on. Loosen a wiper blade which i s frozen in p lace before operating the
wipe r to prevent damage to the wiper
blade o r the wiper motor .
- Do not use the wiper to clear a frosted
window . U si ng the w ipers as a conven­
i ent ice sc raper will destroy the wiper
blades.

Headlight washer system

The headlight washer system cleans the
headlights.
.. Operate the w indshield wiper/washer sys­

lights turned on by ho lding the lever for lon­
ger than one second .
The washer jets extend forward out of the
front bumper driven by water pressu re to
spray the fro nt headlights w ith water .
You should inspect the headlights regu larly
(for example whe n refueling) and clean off
any solid di rt or i nsects from the le nses .
To ensure the system wor ks proper ly in w inter,
keep the washer jets free of snow and remove
any ice using a de-icing spray.
Service position
The wiper blades can only be changed in the
service position .

Memory setting for the exterior mirro rs *
When the seat pos ition is saved in the memo­
r y, the position of the exte rior mirrors is saved
at t he same time~
page 76.
If the position of the passenger mirror is
changed whe n the vehicle is in reve rse gear
and the switch is i n the ® position, th is new
tilte d position will be a utomat ica lly saved to
the remote key when the vehicle is taken out
of reverse gear. To save, the rotary knob for
mirror ad justment must be in the ® position,
the selector lever must be in the P position
and the ign ition must be off . Th is will now be­
come the stored setting when the vehicle is
put in reverse gear again .
Tilting the passenger' s side e xterior
mirror (only with seat memory )
When you move the selector lever into R (Re­
ve rse), the mir ror on the front passenger's
door (knob tu rned to @
Q fig. 73) will tilt
slig htly downward. This make is easier for you
to see the curb w hen you are backing in to a
parking space.
The mirro r returns to its in itia l position as
soon as reve rse gear is disengaged and vehicle
speed is above abou t 9 mp h (1 5 km/h). The
mirror a lso retu rns to its initia l position if the
switch is moved to the driver's exterior mirror
© o r the ignit io n is switched off.
(D Note
-Cur ved (i.e. convex) mirr or surfaces in ­
crease your field of view. Remembe r th at
vehicles or other objects w ill appear
smaller and farther away than when
seen in a flat mirror. If yo u use this mir­
ror to est imate distances of following
vehicles when c hanging lanes, you could
estimate incorrectly and cause an acci­
dent.
- If the mir ro r hous ing is moved un inten­
tiona lly (for exampl e, while park ing your
vehicle), t hen you must first fo ld the mi r- Clear vi
sion 71
ror elect rically . Do not read just the mir­
ror housing ma nually . You cou ld damage
the motor which controls the m irror .
-If you wash the vehicle in a n automatic
car wash, you must fold the exter ior mir­
rors in to reduce the risk of damage to
the mirrors . Never fold power fo ld ing ex­
terior mirrors* by hand. Only fo ld them
in and o ut using the power controls.
(D Tips
If t here sho uld be a ma lf u nction in the
e lectrica l system, you can st ill adjust the
ex ter ior mirrors by press ing the edge of
the m irror.

Manual anti-glare adjustment

edge of the mirror) to the rear .
Automatically dimming mirrors*

The windshield may not be treated with
wate r-repelling windsh ie ld coating agents.
Unfavorab le conditions such as wetness,
darkness, or low sun can result in in­
creased glare . Wiper blade chatter is also
possible.

must be co rrectly taken apart and then prop ­
erly put back together to help prevent break­
age of parts and long term damage from wa­
te r that can enter housings that have not been
properly resealed.
F or your safety, we recommend that you have
your author ized Audi deale r replace any bulbs
for you, since your dealer has the proper tools,
the correct bulbs and the expertise.
Gas discharge lamps (Xenon lights)*:
Due to the high electrical vo ltage, have the
bu lbs rep laced by a qualified technician.
Headlights with Xenon light can be identified
by the high voltage sticker.
A WARNING
Contact with high-voltage components of
the electrical system and improper re­ placement of gas discharge (Xenon) head­
light bulbs can cause serious personal in­
jury and death .
- Xenon bulbs are pressurized and can ex­
plode when be ing changed .
-Chang ing Xenon lamps requires the spe­
cial train ing, instructions and equip­
ment .
- Only an authorized Audi dealer or other
qualified workshop should change the
bulbs in gas d ischarge lamps.
A WARNING
There are parts with sharp edges on the
openings and on the bulb holders that can
cause serious cuts.
- If you are uncertain about what to do,
have the work performed by an author­
ized Audi dea le r or other qualified work­
shop. Serious personal injury may result
from improperly performed work .
(j) Tips
-If you must replace the light bu lbs your­
se lf, always remembe r that the engine
compartment of any vehicle is a hazard­
ous area to work in . Always read and
heed all WARNINGS
