Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area
at the end of the scale ind icates maximum
perm iss ible engine RPM after the break-in pe­
riod . Before reaching th is area, move these­
lector lever to posit ion "A (Automat ic opera­
tion) " or ease your foot off the accelerator
pedal.
(D Note
The tachomete r needle should only briefly
be in the red zone : you could damage your
engine! The beginning of the red zone var­
ies depending on the engine.
@ For the sake of the environment
Upshifting early saves fuel and reduces en­
gine noise.
Digital clock with date display
Your vehicle is equipped with a quartz con­
trolled digital clock.

To set the hour
• Pull the knob (hour display flashes) and turn
it to the left or right.
To set the minutes
• Pull the knob as many times as necessary
until the minute display flashes.
• Turn the knob to the left or right.
To set the date
• Pull the knob as many times as necessary
until the day, month or year disp lay flashes.
• Tur n the knob to the left or right.
To hide or display the date
• Pull the knob as many times as necessary
until the date disp lay flashes.
• Turn the knob to the left or right.
When the date display stops blinking, this means the time and date have been success­
fully stored.
With the ign it ion off, pushing or pu lling the
Set/Check button

Engine coolant temperature gauge
The eng ine coolant gauge c::> page 8, fig. 3 ®
only works when the ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the fol­
lowing important points.
Engine cold
As long as the needle remains at the bottom
of the gauge, the engine still has not reached its operating temperature. Avoid high engine
speeds, heavy engine loads and heavy throt­
tle.
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating
temperature, the needle will move into the
midd le of the gauge and remain there. If the
engine is working hard at high outside tem­
peratures, the needle may turn further to the
right. This is no cause for concern as long as
the . warning light in the instrument cluster
does not illuminate.
When the. warning light starts to flash,
this can mean one of two things: either the
coolant
temperature is too high, or the cool-
ant

- Never open the engine compartment lid
if you see or hear steam, or if you see en­
gine coo lant dr ipping from the eng ine

off first until you can
no longer see or hear steam or coolant
escaping .
CD Note
- Mounting additional lights or ac cesso ries
in front of the air inlets reduces the cool­
ing effect of the radiator . At high outside
temperatures or high engine load, the
engine could overheat.
- The front spoi ler has been designed to
proper ly distribute the cooling air when
the vehicle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, th is could reduce the cooling
effect and the engine could then over­
heat. Ask your authorized Aud i dea le r fo r
ass istance.
Fuel gauge
The fuel ga uge works only when the ignition is
on. When the needle reaches the red area, the
warning light in the instrument cluster will i l­
luminate ¢

CD Note
Never run the tank completely d ry! An ir­
regular supply of fue l can cause engine
misfiring and fuel could enter into the ex­
haust system . The catalyt ic converter
co uld then overheat and be damaged. Speedometer with odometer
The
speedometer shows you the vehicle
speed, and the odometer shows you how
many miles (kilometers) you have driven.

The distance driven is shown in m iles (USA
models) or in kilometers (Canada mode ls) .
Lower odomet er
The lower odomete r shows the tota l number
of miles (kilometers) driven.
Upper odometer (trip odometer )
The upper odometer shows the total number of miles (kilometers) driven s ince you last re­
set the odometer back to zero. You can use
t hi s odometer when you want to keep track of
how many m iles (kilometers) yo u have driven
f o r a si ngle tr ip or e rrand. The last dig it ind i­
cates 1/10 of a mile (100 meters). Yo u can set
the trip odometer back to zero by pressing the reset button ¢
fig. 5.
With the ignit ion off, pushi ng of the Set/

Malfunction message
If there is a malfunct ion somewhere in the in­
strument cluster, dEF will appea r in the trip
odometer and w ill s tay on. Co ntact your au ­
thorized Audi dea ler to have the prob lem cor­
rected .
Immobilizer
When the ignition is sw itched on, the data on
the ignition key are scanned automatic ally. .,..

If an unau thorized key was used , SAFE is dis ­
p layed continuously in the odometer display
field. The vehicle cannot be operated

Voltmeter display
The voltmeter shows the voltage in the vehi­
cle electrical system .
If the reading drops be ­
low 12 volts with the engine running, you
should have the power supply (batte ry and
generator) inspected by an a uthorized Audi
dealer .
(D Tips
Voltage can drop be low 8 vo lts when you
start the engine.
Warning/indicator lights
Description
The indicato r lights in the inst rument cluster
b link or t urn on. They indicate functions o r
mal funct ions

Messages may appear with some indicator
lights. The messages turn
off after a short
time. To d isp lay a message aga in, p ress the
Se t/Check button

is more than one malfunction , the indicator
lights will turn on one after the other for ap ­
proximately two seconds each.
Some ind icators lights in the disp lay can turn
on in several colors.

- Failure to heed warning lights and other
important vehicle information may result
in serious personal injury or vehicle dam­
age .
- Whenever sta lled or stopped for repair,
move the vehicle a safe distance

road, stop the engine, and turn on the
emergency flasher

-The engine compartment of any motor
vehicle is a potentially hazardous area . Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, stop the engine and let it

Some indicator lights turn on briefly to check
the function o f that system whe n you swi tch
the ignition on. These systems are marked
with a./ in the follow ing tab les. If one of
these indicator lights does not turn on, ther e
is a ma lf u nction in that system.

This warning/indicator light illuminates when
the brake fluid level is too low or when there
is o malfunction in the ABS, or when the park­
ing brake is set.
I f the - (USA mode ls)/ . (Canada
models) symbol flashes in the display with the
parking brake released, there is a ma lfunction
in the brake system. In addition to the sym­
bol, one of two messages appears in the d is­
play:

properly.

than 3 seconds and faster than 3 mph (5 km/
h).

could lock up first unde r hard braking.
Lock-up of the rear wheel b rakes can
cause loss of vehi cle con tro l and an acci­
dent. Have your veh icle repa ired immedi­
ately by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified workshop . Drive s lowly and
avoid sudden, hard brake application.
- Canada models: If both, the b rake warn­
ing light . and the ABS warning light
[iJ come on at the same time, the rear
wheels could lock up f irst under hard

braking. Lock-up of the rear wheel brakes
can cause loss of vehicle control and an
accident. Have your vehicle repaired im­
med iately by your authorized Audi dealer
or a qualified workshop. Drive slowly and
avo id sudden, hard brake applicat ion .
- If the brake warning/indicator light does
not go out after a few seconds and the
parking brake is released, or lights up
wh ile you are driving, the fluid level in
the brake fluid rese rvoir is too low. If you
believe that it is safe to do so, proceed
immediately at low speed to the nearest
authorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop and have the brake system inspect­
ed.
- Always keep in m ind that afte r several
brake applicat ions, yo u will need greater
pressure on the brake peda l to stop your
vehicle. Do not re ly on stra ined brakes to
respond w ith maximum stopp ing power
in c ritical situations. You must a llow for
increased bra king distances. The extra
dis tance used up by fad ing br akes could
lead to an acc ident .
~/ !lr Safety systems
The I (USA models)/ . (Canada models) in ­
dicator light monitors the safety systems e.g .
airbags, pretensioners and i llum inates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition
on.

indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi ­
nates wh ile you are dr iv ing, or if it starts to
bli nk, then there is a ma lfunction somewhere
in the system . If the light does not illuminate
when you sw itch on the ignit ion, this also
means there is a ma lfunction .
A WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys­
t ems, cont act your author ized Audi dealer
immediate ly. Otherw ise the sa fety sys­
tems may not wo rk p roperly in an acci ­
dent.
4 Safety belt warning light
Applies to vehicles: with safety belt warning light
The warning light is a reminder to fasten
safety belts .
The warning light . comes on for a few sec­
onds after the ignition is sw itched on as a re­
minder to fasten your safety belt .

' 0 Generator '
This warning/indicator light detects a mal ­
function in the generator or in the vehicle 's
electrical system.
The . warning/indicator light illuminates
when you switch on the ignition and must go
out after the eng ine has started.
If the . warning/indicator light illuminates
whi le you a re d riving, you shou ld contact yo ur
authorized Aud i dea ler. Since the vehicle bat­
tery is discharging, you shou ld sw itch off any
unnecessary electr ica l consumers (for exam­
ple, the air conditioner).
"l!:r. Engine oil pressure
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair .
If the . symbo l appears in the disp lay and
flashes, the o il pressure is too low . In add ition
to the symbol, the following message also ap­
pears in the display:
Switch off engine! Oil pres sure is too low
.,. Pull off the road and stop the veh icle.
.. Shut the engine down.
.. Check the engine oil level¢

- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low engine oil lev ­
el. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the
oil level in your engine at regular inter­
vals, preferably each time you refuel,
and always before going on a long trip.
- The yellow oil level warning indication
1\1 requires oil refill or workshop serv ­
ice without delay . Do not wait until the
red oil pre ssure warning symbol.

If the
DJ indicato r lamp ill uminates, the sys­
tem has sw itched the ESC off. In th is case, you .,.

can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESC on again. The system is func­
tioning comp letely when the indicator lamp
switches
off.
If the 11 indicator lamp illuminates, the ESC
was switched
off with the [ID button.
Stabilization program and ABS fault! See
owner's manual
If the G1 ind icator lamp and the Ci] ABS indi­
cator lamp illuminate and the driver message
appears, the ABS or electronic differential lock
is ma lfunction ing. This also interrupts the
ESC. The brakes sti ll function with their nor­
mal power, but ABS is not active.
Drive to you r authorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the mal func tion corrected.

ABS/( (§) Anti-lock brake system
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/ind icator light fl!B (USA mod­
els)
;tlJ (Canada models) will come on for a
few seconds when the ignit ion is switched on .
The light will go out after an automatic check
sequen ce is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when:
- The warning/indicator light does not illumi­
nate whe n you switch the ign ition on .
- The warning/indicator light does not go out
after a few seconds .
- The warning/indicator light illuminates
wh ile driving .
The ESC indicator light a lso illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes­
sage
Stabilization program and ABS: fault!
See owner's manual
also appears in the in­
strument cluster display and a warning tone
sounds .
The brake system will still respond even
without the assistance of the ABS system.
See your authorized Audi dealer as soon as possible to restore full braking performance.

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake warning light¢ page 13 and the
ABS wa rning illum inate
together there may be
a mal function in the ABS, and there may also
be a malfunction in the brake system itself
¢ .&.. The ABS will not work and you will no­
tice a change in braking response and per­
formance.

Malfunction in the electronic differential
lock
(EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the EDL system ¢
page 144.
See your author ized Audi dealer as soon as
poss ible.
_& WARNING
- If the~ (USA models)/Ci] (Canada
models) warning light does not go out,
or if it comes on whi le driving, the ABS
system is not working properly. The vehi-
cle can then be stopped only with the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill
not have the protect ion ABS provides.
Contact your Audi dea ler as soon as pos·
sible.
- USA models: If the 1111 warning light,
the
J$) warning light and the fl!B warn­
ing light come on together, the rear
wheels could lock up first under hard
b rak ing. Rear wheel lock-up can cause
loss of vehicle control and an accident.

This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control .

Power Control) illuminates when you switch
on the ignition as a function check .

while you are dr iving, then there is a mal­
function in the engine electron ics . Have
the malfunction co rrected as soon as pos­
sible by you r authorized Aud i dea le r or
qualified workshop.

T he Ma lfunction Indi cato r Lamp ( MIL) is pa rt
of the On-Board Diagnos tic (OBD II) system .
T he symbo l

turned on and will turn off after the eng ine
has started and has settled at constant id le
speed . This indicates that the MIL is work ing
properly.
T he warning lig ht ill uminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system .
Contact your a uthori zed Aud i dea ler and have
the malfunction corrected.
An improperly clo sed fuel filler cap may al so
cause the MIL l ight to illum inate

Ma ximum 6000 RPM
T he eng ine speed is automatically limited to
6 000 RP M. T his pro tects the engine fr om
overheating .
T he eng ine speed limitation

once the eng ine is no longe r in t he cr itica l
tempe rature range and you have released the
acce le rator pedal once.

When co ld, the engine speed is l imited to
6000 R PM (w ith the
VlO engine) or
7000 R PM (with the VB engine) to p rotect
the engine. The limit is deactivated once
the oil temperature r ises above 140 °F
(60 °C) and the engine is at operating tem­
perature .

If the indicator light turns on and t he mes ­
sage appears, there may be limited starting
ability.
I f th is message turns off after a litt le wh ile,
the battery cha rged enough wh ile driving.
If the message does not turn off, have your
author ized Audi dealer or qualified workshop
correct the malfunction.
~ Fuel supply too low
When the~ symbo l illuminates, this means
there are about 2 .6 gallons (10 liters) of fue l
l eft in the fuel tank. Time to refuel!

appears in the display, there is a fault in the
system. Contact a qualified workshop to have
the fault rectified.

~ Defective light bulb warning
The defective light bulb warning tells you
when a vehicle light bulb has become defec­ tive .
If a defect ive b ulb has been detected by the
sys tem or a ligh t bu lb burns out , the
l',sl sym­
bol with a message appears in the disp lay to te
ll yo u which bulb is burnt out and where it is
located. For example:
Rear left turn sign al
After 5 seconds, the message disappears . If
you want to reca ll the message into the dis­
play, p ress the CH ECK button

The re are three reasons why the defective
bulb message would appear in the disp lay:
- The light bulb has burnt out

-The fuse is "blown" c::> page 221, Replacing
fuses.
- The wire connection to the light bulb is de-
fective.
Have the bulb replaced or the connection re ­
paired by your authorized Audi Service depart­
ment.
A WARNING
-- Light bulbs are pressurized and could ex- plode wh ile they are being changed caus­
ing serious personal injury.
- Work with due care when handling the
high-vo ltage sect ion of gas discharge
(xenon) lamps. Fa iling to do so could re ­
sult in death or serious injury!
BRAKE LIGHT t<@> Brake light defective
In case of a ma lfunction or component fail-
u re, the symbo l (USA models)/
¢@ ) ing electrical components should be checked,
repaired or rep laced, as necessary:
- Brake light bulbs
- All wir ing connections
- Brake light switch
Contact your a uthorized Audi dea ler for assis­
tance if necessary.
