Warm and cold Climate control system
Description
The climate control system warms, cools and
adds humidity to the a ir in the veh icle inter io r.
It
is the most effect ive when the windows and sun­
roof are closed. If there is a build-up of heat in ­
side the vehicle, ventilation can help to speed up
the cooling process.
I n all heating mode functions except
defrost, the
b lower only switches to a higher speed once the
engine coolant has reached a certain tempera­
ture.
Condensat ion from the cooling system can drip
and form a puddle of water unde r the vehicle.
This is normal and does not mean there is a leak.
Pollutant filter
The pollutant filte r removes pollutants such as
dust and pollen from the ai r.
The air pollutants filter must be changed at the
intervals specified in your Warranty & Mainte­
nance booklet, so that the a ir condit ioner can
properly work.
If you drive your vehicle in an area with high air
pollution, the filter may need to be changed
more frequently than spec ified in your Audi Wa r­
ranty
& Maintenance booklet. If in doubt, ask
your authorized Audi Service Adv isor for advice.
Key coded settings
The climate control settings are automat ically
stored and assigned to the remote control key
that is in use.
_&. WARNING
Reduced visibility is dangerous and can cause
accidents .
- For safe dr iv ing it is very important that all
windows be free of ice, snow and condensa­
tion .
Warm and cold
-Comp letely familiarize yourse lf with the
proper use and funct ion of the heating and
ventilation system and especially how to de­
fog and defrost the windows.
- Never use the windshield wiper/washer sys­
tem in freezing weather until you have
warmed the windshie ld first, using the heat­
ing and vent ilation system. The washer solu­
tion may freeze on the windsh ield and re­
duce visibility.
(D Note
- If you suspect that the air conditioner has been damaged, sw itch the system off to
avoid further damage and have it inspected
by a qualified dealership.
- Repairs to the Audi air conditioner require
special techn ical knowledge and spec ial
tools. Contact an authorized Aud i dealer for
assistance.
@ For the sake of the environment
By reducing the amount of fuel you use, you
also reduce the amount of pollutants emitted
into the air.
(D Tips
- Keep the air intake slots (in front of the
w indshield) free from ice, snow and debris
in order to main tain the proper function of
the climate control system.
- T he energy management system may switch
the seat heating * or rear window defroster
off temporarily. These systems are avai lab le
again as soon as the energy balance has
been restored.
- Air escapes through vents under the rear
window. When placing items of cloth ing on
the luggage compartment cover, ensure
that the openings are not covered.

vary, depending on the type of display in your ve­
h icle .
The speed is kept constant by modify ing engine
power or thro ugh an active brake intervention.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic around
yo u when the cruise control is in operation .
You are always responsib le for your speed
and the dista nce between yo ur vehicle and
other vehicles .
- For reasons of safety, cruise cont ro l should
not be us ed in the city, in stop-and-go t raf­
fic, on twisting roads and w hen road condi­
tio ns are poor (such as i ce, fog, gr avel,
heavy rain and hyd rop laning) - r is k of acci­
dent.
- T urn off t he cr uise control temporari ly w hen
en ter ing turn lanes, highway exit lanes or in
constr uction zones .
- P lease note tha t inadvertent ly " rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is be­
cause the cruise contro l is overridden by the
dr iver's acceleration .
- If a brake system malfunction such as ove r­
heating occurs when the cruise control sys­
tem is switched on, the braking function in
the system may be sw itched off. The other
cruise control func tions remain act ive as
lo ng as the indicato r light

The brake lights illuminate as soon as the
bra kes apply automat ica lly.
Dri ving
Changing speed
• To inc rease/decrease the speed in in cr ements,
t ap t he leve r in the
010 direction¢ page 78,
fig. 81.
• To increase/decrease the speed quic kly, hold
the lever in the
0 10 di rect ion until the de ­
sired speed is displayed.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase yo ur speed, e.g . if yo u want to pass
someone . The speed you saved ear lie r will re­
s u me as soon as you let off of the accelerator
pedal.
If, however , you exceed yo ur saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes, the
cruise control will be turned off temporarily . The
green symbo l in the d isplay turns white. The
saved speed rema ins the same .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehi­
cle is not moving.
• Switch on the ignition.
• Pull lever into position CD r::> page 78, fig. 81.
• Press the lever in the
0 or O direction to in-
crease or decrease your speed.
• Release the lever to save that speed .
This function makes it possible, for examp le, to
save the speed you want before dr iv ing o n the
highway. Once on the highway, activate the cru ise
control by pu lli ng the lev er toward CD-

- Please note that the driving wheels can spin
and the vehicle can brea k away w hen spo rt
mode is switched on, especially when the
road is slippery.
- Once you have accelerated, yo u should
switch sport mode off
by pressing the

- The t ransmission tempe ratu re may inc rease
significantly after using the La unch Control
Program. If that happens, the program may
not be available for a few minutes. It will be
ava ilable again after a coo l-down period .
- When accelerat ing using the Launch Contro l
program, all vehicle pa rts a re subject to
heavy loads. This can result in increased
w ear.
Transmission malfunction
[i1 Transmission : Press brake pedal and sele ct
gear again .
Press the brake pedal and se lect the desi red se­
lecto r leve r pos it ion aga in . You can then continue
d riving.
[O] Transmi ssion overheating: Please drive con­
servativ ely.

The transm ission temperat ure has inc reased s ig ­
nificantly d ue to the sporty driving manner. Drive
i n a less sporty manne r until the temperature re­
turns to the normal range and the indicator light
switches of.
[i1 Trans mission malfunction: You can continue
driving
The re is a system mal func tion in the t ransm is ­
s ion . You may contin ue driving . Drive to yo ur au­
thorized Audi dea ler or qualified repa ir facility
soon to have the malfunction corrected .
[i1 Transmission malfun ction : Limited driving
functionality
There is a system malfunct ion in the t ransm is­
s io n. The t ransm ission is swi tching to eme rgency
mode. This mode on ly shifts in to cer tain gears or
will no longer shift at al l. The engine may stall.
D rive to your authorized A udi dealer or qualified
repair fac ility immediately to have the mal func ­
tion corrected.
[il ffl Trans mission malfunction: No reverse
You can continue dri ving
There is a system malfunct ion in the t ransm is­

You cannot engage the reverse gear. Drive to yo ur

Introduction

The adaptive cruise control system assists the
d river by regu lating veh icle speed and he lp ing to
maintain a set distance to the vehicle ahead ,
within the limits of the system. If the system de­
tects a moving vehicle up ahead, adaptive cruise control can brake and then accelerate your vehi ­
cle. This he lps to make driving more comfortable
on long highway stretches.
The braking guard system can warn you about an impending collision and initiate brak ing maneu­
vers
c> page 94.
Adapt ive cruise control and braking guard have
technical limitations that you must know, so p lease read this section carefully, understand
how the system works and use them properly at
all times.
General information

The area that contains the radar sensor c::> fig . 90
must neve r be covered by stickers or other ob­
jects or obstructed with dirt, insects, snow or ice
that will inte rfe re wi th the adapt ive cru ise con­
trol system and brak ing guard. For information
on cleaning, refer to
c> page 181 . The same ap­
plies for any modifications made in the front
area.

The function of the adaptive cruise contro l sys­
tem and braking guard is limited under some
condit ions:
- Objects can on ly be de tected when they are
within sensor range
c> page 90, fig. 93.
- The system has a l imi ted ability to detect ob­
jects that are a short d istance ahead, off to the
side of your vehicle or moving into your lane.
- Some k inds of veh icles are hard to detect ; fo r
example motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging toads may be
detected when it is too late or they may not be
detected at all .
- When driving through curves

- Stationary objects c::> page 89.
& WARNING
-Always pay attention to traffic when adaptive
cruise control is switched on and braking
guard is active . As the driver, you are still re ­
sponsible for starting and for maintaining
speed and distance to other objects . Braking
guard is used to assist you . The driver must
a lways take action to avo id a collis ion. The
driver is always responsible for braking at the
cor rect t ime.
- I mproper use of adaptive cru ise con tro l can
cause collisions, other accidents and serious
personal inju ry.
- Never let the comfort and conven ien ce that
adapt ive cru ise control and brak ing guard
offer distrac t you from the need to be alert
to traffic cond itions and the need to remain
in full control of your vehicle at all times,
- Always remember t hat the adaptive cruise
contro l and brak ing guard have limits - they
will not slow the vehicle down or maintain
the set distance when you dr ive towards an
obstacle or something on or near the road
that is not moving, such as vehicles stopped in a traff ic jam, a stalled or disabled vehicle.
If registered by t he radar sensor, vehicles or
obstacles that are not moving can t rigge r a
co llision warning and if confirmed by the
video camera, a n acu te collision warning.

Audi adapt ive crui se cont rol and bra king gu ard
- For safety reasons, do not use adaptive
cruise control when driving on roads with
many curves, when the road surface is in
poor condit ion and/or in bad weather (such
as ice, fog, gravel, heavy rain and hydroplan­
ing) . Us ing the system under these condi­
tions co uld resu lt in a collision.
- Switch adaptive cruise control off tempora­
rily when driving in turning lanes, on ex­
pressway exits or in construction zones. This
prevents the vehicle from acce lerating to
the set speed when in these situations.
- T he adapt ive cruise con trol system w ill not
brake by itself if you put your foot on the ac­
celerator pedal. Do ing so can override the
speed and distance regulation.
- When approaching stationary objects such
as stopped traffic, adaptive cruise control
will not respond and braking guard will have
limited function .
- The adaptive cruise control system and brak­
ing guard do not react to people, anima ls,
objects cross ing the road or oncoming ob­
jects.
- The function of the radar sensor can be af­
fected by reflective objects such as guard
rails, the entrance to a tunnel, heavy rain or
ice.
- Never follow a ve hicle so closely that you
cannot stop your vehicle safely. The adap­
t ive cr uise control cannot s low or brake the
vehicle safely when you fo llow another veh i­
cl e too close ly. Always remembe r that the
au tom atic b ra ki ng function cannot bring the
vehicle to a su dden or emergency stop un­
der these conditions.
- T o prevent unin tended operation, always
swit ch ACC
off when i t is not be ing used .

The sensor can be disp laced by impacts o r
damage to the bumper, whee l housing and
underbody. That could affect the adaptive
cru ise cont ro l system and braking guard. Have

In curves

When driving into a curve c:> fig. 91 and out of a
curve, the adaptive cruise control may react to a
vehicle in the next lane and apply the brakes . You
can override or prevent the braking by press ing
the accelerator peda l briefly.

T he adaptive cruise control system only reacts to
objects that are moving or that the system has
already detected as moving. For example, if a ve­
hicle @, which has already been detected by the
adaptive cruise control, turns or changes lanes
and another stationary veh icle @ is located in
front of that ve hicle, the system will not react to
t h e stat ionary vehicle.

Overriding cruise control
• To accelerate ma nually, press the acce lerator
pedal. The message
ACC override appears .
• To resume adaptive cruise control, remove your
foo t from the gas pedal. The sys tem re turns
again to the speed that was saved before.
• You can save a new speed at any time by press·

Canceling cruise control while driving
• Move the lever into position @. The message
ACC standby appears . Or
• press the brake pedal.
• To resume the stored speed, move the lever in­

When approaching a mov ing vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cruise control system bra kes to
match that object's speed and then maintains
the stored distance. If the vehicle ahead acceler­
ates, adaptive cruise contro l will also accelerate
up to the stored speed.
The higher the speed, the greater the distance in

A WARNING
Following other vehicles too closely increases

- Setting short distances to the traffic ahead
reduces the time and distance available to
br ing your vehicle to a safe stop and makes
it even more necessary to pay close atten­
tion to traffic.
- Always obey applicable traffic laws, use
good judgment, and select a safe following
distance for the traffic, road and weather
conditions.

to take action. This could happen, for example, if
braking by the adaptive cruise control system is
not enough to maintain enough distance to the
vehicle ahead.
The instrument cluster will warn you about the danger ¢

Braking guard uses a radar sensor. It also func­
tions within the limits of the system when adap­
tive cruise control is switched off.
What can Audi braking guard do?
When detected in time, the system can assess
situations when a vehicle ahead brakes suddenly
or if your own vehicle is traveling at a high speed
and approaching a vehicle up ahead that is mov­
ing more slowly . Braking guard does not react if it
cannot detect the situation .
The system advises you of various situations:
- The
distance warning is given if you are too
close to the vehicle ahead for a long time. If the
vehicle ahead brakes sharply, you will not be
able to avoid a collision. The indicator light.
in the display comes on .
- The
approach warning is given when a detected
vehicle up ahead in your lane is moving much
more slowly than you are or if it brakes sharply .
When this warning is given, it may only be pos­
s ib le to avoid a collision by swerving or braking
sharply. The indicator light . and indicato r in
the display will wa rn you about the danger
¢ fig. 100 . You will also hear an acoustic signa l.
If you do not react fast enough or do not react at
all to the situation, Braking guard will intervene
by braking and the message

- If a co llision is imminent, the system wi ll first
provide an
acute warning by br iefly and sharply
app ly in g the brakes.
- If you do not react to the acute warning, brak­
ing guard can brake within the limits of the sys­
tem. This reduces the vehicle speed in the event
of a collision.
- At speeds under 20 mph (30 km/h), the system
can initiate a complete deceleration shortly be­
fore a collisionl l_
-If the braking guard senses that you are not
braking hard enough when a collision is immi­
nent, it can increase the braking force.
Which functions can be controlled?
You can switch braking guard and the distance/
approach warning on or off in the radio or MMI
c> page 95, Settings in the radio/MM!.
A WARNING
Lack of attent ion can cause collisions, other
accidents and ser ious personal injuries. The
braking guard is an assist system and cannot
prevent a coll is ion by itself. The dr iver must
always intervene. The driver is always respon­
sib le for braking at the correct time.
- Always pay close attent ion to traffic, even
when the braking guard is switched on. Be
ready to intervene and be ready to take com­
plete control whenever necessary. Always
keep the safe and legal distance between
your vehicle and vehicles up ahead.
- Braking guard works within limits and will
not respond outside the system limits, for
examp le when approaching a stopped vehi­
cle or stationary obstacle (end of a traffic
jam or vehicle that has broken down in traf­
fic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor for
the braking guard works only w ith in defined
detection and range limits that may prevent
the proper detection of other vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range can
be reduced by rain, snow and heavy spray.

formation stage so that your view toward the
front is not d isturbed .
Warning sta ge
If you activ ate the turn s ignal, s ide ass ist warns
you about vehicles that are detected a nd classi­
fied as critica l. The d isplay in the respective mir ­
ror blinks brightly . If this happens, check traffic
by g lancing in the rearview mirror and over your
shoulder

@ Vehicles that are approaching
In certain cases, a vehicle will be classified as
critical for a lane change even if it is still some­
what far away. The faste r a vehicle approaches,
the sooner t he d isplay in the exter io r mirro r will
turn on.
@ Vehicles traveling with you
Vehicles traveling w ith you are indicated in the
exterior mirror if they are classified as critical for
a lane change. All vehicles detected by side assist

are indicated by the time they enter your "blind
spot", at the latest.
© Vehicles left behind
If you slowly pass a veh icle that side assist has
detected (the difference in speed between the ve­
hicle and your vehicle is less than 9 mph (1 S km/
h)), the display in the exterior mirror turns on as
soon as the vehicle enters your blind spot.
T he display will not turn on if you quickly pass a
vehicle that side ass ist has detected (the differ­
ence in speed between the vehicle and your vehi­
cle is greater than 9 mph (15 km/h)).
Functional limitations
The radar senso rs are designed to detect the left
and right adjacent lanes when the road lanes are
the normal width. In certain situations, the dis­
play in the exterior mirror may turn on even
though there is no vehicle located in the area that
i s cr itical for a lane change. For example:
- if the lanes are narrow or if your are dr iving on
the edge of your lane. If thi s is the case, the
system may have detected the vehicle in anoth­
er lane that is
not adjacent to your current lane.
- if yo u are driving through a c urve . Side assist
may react to a vehicle that is one lane over from
the adjacent lane.
- if side assist reacts to other objects (such as
high or disp laced guard rails).
- In poor weather conditions . The side assist
functions are limited.
Do not cover the radar senso rs~
fig. 104 with
stickers, deposits, bicycle wheels or other ob­
jects, because this will affect the function . For in­
