Seats and storage
Glove compartment
The glove compartment is illuminated and can
be locked .

glove compartment lid upward until the lock

The glove compartment can be locked using the

On the right side in the glove compartment is a
holder with the key body into which the emergen­
cy key must be clipped to be able to start the ve­
hicle.
A WARNING
To reduce the risk of personal injury in an acci­ dent or sudden stop, always keep the glove
compartment closed while driving.
Additional storage
There are a variety of storage compartments and
fasteners in various places in the vehicle.
- In the roof headliner above the rearview mirror .
- On the back of the front seat. The compart-
ment can hold a maximum weight of 1 kg.
- On the left and right of the luggage compart­
ment, behind the side trim.
- Garment hooks on the pillars in the rear of the
vehicle.

A WARNING , -
- When driving, do not leave any hard objects
on the rear window shelf or allow your pet
to sit on the shelf . They could become a haz­
ard for vehicle occupants in the event of
sudden braking or a crash.
-Always remove objects from the instrument
panel. Any items not stored could slide
around inside the vehicle while driving or
when accelerating or when applying the brakes or when driving around a corner.
- When you are driving make sure that any­
thing you may have placed in the center con­
sole or other storage locations cannot fall
out into the footwells. In case of sudden braking you would not be able to brake or
accelerate .
- Any articles of clothing that you have hung
up must not interfere with the driver's view .
The coat hooks are designed only for light­
weight clothing. Never hang any clothing
with hard, pointed or heavy objects in the pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden
braking or in an accident -especially if the
airbag is deployed -these objects could in­
jure any passengers inside the vehicle.
- To reduce the risk of personal inju ry in an ac­
cident or sudden stop, always keep the
glove compartment closed while driving.
- Read and follow all WARNINGS
¢ page 146, Important safety instructions
on the side airbag system.
- Hang clothes in such a way that they do not
impair the driver's vision.
- The coat hooks must only be used for light­
weight clothing. Do not leave any heavy or
sharp edged objects in the pockets which
may interfere with the side curtain airbag
deployment and can cause personal injury in
a crash.
- Do not use coat hangers for hanging cloth­
ing on the coat hooks as this can interfere
with proper deployment of the side curtain airbags in an accident.
- Do not hang heavy objects on the coat
hooks, as they could cause personal injury in
a sudden stop .

- You can open the pass-through from the
luggage compartment. Push the release
button down and push the cover forward.
- You can lock or unlock the pass-through us­
ing the mechanical key. This prevents any

Securing the ski sack

The ski sock must be secured in the luggage com­
portment.

Sea ts and sto rage
A WARNING
-- The ski sack is intended only for the trans-
portation of skis and other light objects . To
reduce the risk of serious personal injury,
never transport heavy or pointed objects in
the ski sack.
- When braking rapid ly or during an accident,
the load could be displaced and cause injury
to occupants.
- Sharp edges on the load must be covered for p rotection. Always fasten the belt tightly
around the sack and its contents~

- For safety reasons, do not transport more
than two pairs of skis in the ski sack.
- You must secure the ski sack with the strap after loading.
- Make sure that all objects you are transport­
ing in the pass-through are secured. Other­
wise they could slide around during sudden b rak ing maneuvers and cause injuries.
(l} Tips
- Never stow the ski sack away when it is still
wet or damp (for example, snow melting
from skis). Allow it to dry completely before stowing it away.
- When transporting sk is or snowboards,
tighten the securing strap between the bindings.
- Pos ition skis in the sk i sack with the pointed
ends facing the front and ski poles with the
pointed ends facing the rear.
- You can lock or unlock the pass-through us­
ing the mechan ical key. This prevents any
access to the luggage compartment from
the vehicle interior.
Parcel shelf
The parcel shelf behind the rear seatback can be
used to carry light items of clothing.
A WARNING
-
No heavy or hard objects should be placed on
the parcel shelf. They are a hazard to the vehi ­
cle occupants dur ing sudden braking. The is a
risk of injury.

Sw itching the ignition on /off
If you would like to switch the ignition o n wit h­
out starting the engine, fo llow these steps:
• Inse rt the key into the ignition lock.
• Press the key brief ly
wi thout p ress ing the b rake
pedal.
• To sw itch the ignition off , press the key again.
When starting the engine, major e lectr ica l loads
are sw itched off temporar ily.
You ca n only remove the key with the ignition
sw itched off .
If the engine should not start immedia tely , the
starti ng process is automatically stopped after a
short time . Repeat sta rting procedure .
A WARNING
-Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces - dange r of asp hyxiation.
- Never remove the ignition key from the ign i­
t ion loo k while the vehicle is moving . Other­
wise, the steering lock cou ld sudden ly en­
gage and you would not be able to steer the
vehicle.
- Always ta ke the key with yo u wheneve r you
leave your vehi cle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical eq uipment
s uch as the power windows cou ld be operat­
ed . T his can lead to ser ious injury.
- Never leave ch ildren or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing peop le from escap ing

Stopping the engine

.. Bring the vehicle to a full stop.
.. Automatic transmission: Move the selector lev­
er to the P or N position.
.. Press on the ignition key. The engine is turned
off .
.. You can now remove the key.
Steering lock
The steering locks when you remove the ignition
key. The locked steering helps prevent vehicle
theft.
Emergency off
If it is necessary in unusual circumstances, the
engine can be switched off while the vehicle is
moving. The engine will be switched off if you
press on the key for an extended period.
A WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop. The full func­
tion of the brake booster and the power
steering is not guaranteed . You must use
more force to turn or brake if necessary. Be­
cause you cannot steer and brake as you
usually would, this could lead to crashes
and serious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always park
your vehicle with the selector lever in P. Oth­
erwise, the vehicle could inadvertently roll
away.
- The radiator fan can continue to run for up
to 10 minutes even after you have turned
off the engine and removed the ignition key.
Driving
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the
engine coolant heats up because of intense
sunlight or heat build-up in the engine com­
partment.
- Always take the key with you whenever you
leave your vehicle. Otherwise, the engine
could be started or electrical equipment
such as the power windows could be operat­
ed. This can lead to serious injury.
- Never leave children or persons requiring as­
sistance unattended in the vehicle. The
doors can be locked using the remote trans­
mitter, preventing people from escaping
from the veh icle on their own in the event of
an emergency. Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be ex­
posed to very high or very low tempera­
tures.

If the engine has been under heavy load for
an extended period, heat builds up in the en­
gine compartment after the engine is switch­
ed off -there is a risk of damaging the engine.
Allow the engine to run at idle for about two minutes before switching it off.

If the master key is no longer in the ve hicle, you
cannot switch on the ignition after stopping the
engine and you also cannot start the engine
again . Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from

This message appears for safety reasons along
with a warning signal. It appea rs if the selector
lever for the automatic transmission is not in the
P position when switch ing off the ignition. Move

button* on the door handle o r us ing t he remote
key .

Your veh icle is equipped w ith an electromechan i­
cal parking b rake. The par king b rake is designed
to p revent the veh icle from rolling unintentional­
ly and replaces the hand brake.

a l hand bra ke, the e lectromechan ical pa rking
b rake provides var ious convenience and safety
f u nctions.
When start ing f rom rest

driv ing by automat ically releasing the parking

emergency workers to get into the veh icle -

parking brake is released automatically upon
starting .

The stored speed and the green symbol

vary, depending on the type of display in your ve­
h icle .
The speed is kept constant by modify ing engine
power or thro ugh an active brake intervention.
A WARNING
- Always pay attention to the traffic around
yo u when the cruise control is in operation .
You are always responsib le for your speed
and the dista nce between yo ur vehicle and
other vehicles .
- For reasons of safety, cruise cont ro l should
not be us ed in the city, in stop-and-go t raf­
fic, on twisting roads and w hen road condi­
tio ns are poor (such as i ce, fog, gr avel,
heavy rain and hyd rop laning) - r is k of acci­
dent.
- T urn off t he cr uise control temporari ly w hen
en ter ing turn lanes, highway exit lanes or in
constr uction zones .
- P lease note tha t inadvertent ly " rest ing"
yo ur foot on the accelerator peda l causes
the cruise control not to brake. This is be­
cause the cruise contro l is overridden by the
dr iver's acceleration .
- If a brake system malfunction such as ove r­
heating occurs when the cruise control sys­
tem is switched on, the braking function in
the system may be sw itched off. The other
cruise control func tions remain act ive as
lo ng as the indicato r light

Dri ving
Changing speed
• To inc rease/decrease the speed in in cr ements,
t ap t he leve r in the

fig. 81.
• To increase/decrease the speed quic kly, hold
the lever in the
0 10 di rect ion until the de ­
sired speed is displayed.
You can also press the accelerator pedal down to increase yo ur speed, e.g . if yo u want to pass
someone . The speed you saved ear lie r will re­
s u me as soon as you let off of the accelerator
pedal.
If, however , you exceed yo ur saved speed by
6 mph (10 km/h) for longer than 5 minutes, the
cruise control will be turned off temporarily . The
green symbo l in the d isplay turns white. The
saved speed rema ins the same .
Presetting your speed
You can preset your desired speed while the vehi­
cle is not moving.
• Switch on the ignition.
• Pull lever into position CD r::> page 78, fig. 81.
• Press the lever in the
0 or O direction to in-
crease or decrease your speed.
• Release the lever to save that speed .
This function makes it possible, for examp le, to
save the speed you want before dr iv ing o n the
highway. Once on the highway, activate the cru ise
control by pu lli ng the lev er toward CD-
Switching off
Temporary deactivation
• Press the brake pedal, or
• Press the leve r into position @ (not clicked into

Automati c tra nsmi ssio n
Select the spo rt m ode S for sporty driving. The
vehicle makes full use of the engine's power.
Shift ing may become not iceable when accelerat ­
ing.
When the vehicle is stationary or at speeds below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply the foot
brake before and while moving the lever to D/S
out of N.

- If you accidentally select N while driving, take your foot off the accelerator pedal im­
mediately and wait for the engine to slow
down to idle before selecting D/S.
- If there is a power failure, the se lector lever
will not move out of the P pos it ion. The
emergency release can be used if this hap­
pens¢page 87.

Automatic Shift Lock (ASL)
The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you against
accidentally shifting into a forward or the re­
verse gear and causing the vehicle to move unin­
tentionally.

The selector lever lock is released as fol lows:

Automatic selector leve r loc k
The selector lever is locked in the P and N pos i­
tions when the ignit ion is turned on . You must
press the brake peda l and the release button to
select another posit ion. As a reminder to the
drive r, the following warni ng appears in the in­
str ument cluster display when the se lector is in P
and
N:

The Automatic Shift Lock only funct ions when the
vehicle is stat iona ry or at speeds below 1 mph
(2 km/h).
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the Auto ­
matic Shift Lock is automat ica lly deactivated in
the N pos ition.
A time delay element prevents the selector lever
from locking when it is moved through the N po ­
s ition (going from R to D/S) . The locking e lement
will lock the selector leve r if the lever is left in N .,..

(Neutral) for more than approximately 2 seconds,
without the brake pedal being pressed.
Release button
The release button on the selector lever prevents
the lever from being accidentally shifted into cer­
tain positions. Depending on the direction of the
shift, the selector lever locks at different posi­
tions . The positions are highlighted in the i llus­
tration ¢

Ignition key safety interlock
The key cannot be removed from the ignition un­
l ess the selecto r lever is in the P park position .
When the ignition key is removed, the selector
lever will be locked in the P position.

Starting the engine
.,. The selector lever must be in P or N.
Starting off
.,. Press and hold the brake pedal.
.,. Press and ho ld the release button in the se lec­
tor lever handle, select the desired selector lev­
er position such as D/S and release the button.
.,. Wait briefly until the transmission has shifted
(you will feel a slight movement).
.,. Remove your foot from the brake pedal and ac­
celerate.
Stopping temporarily
.,. Keep the vehicle stationary using the braking
pedal, for example at traffic lights.
.,. Do not press the accele rator pedal when doing

.,. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when you
start driving, set the parking brake when stop ­

If the selector lever is not in the P position when
you open the driver's door, the vehicle could ro ll.

On s lopes, activate the parking brake first and

This prevents too much stress from being placed on the locking mechanism .
