Press the buttons to turn the functions on or
off . Use the dials to adj ust the temperature,
the blower speed and the a ir distribution. The
LED in a button will light up when the func­
tion is switched on. The settings are shown in
the cl imate control display and are a lso shown
in the MMI display for a few seconds . The driv­
e r and fron t passenger settings can be adjust­
in g separately.
The settings can also be adjusted in the rear
c::>fig. 77.
IOFFl Switching the climate control
system on/off
The IO FFI button switches the climate control
system on or off .
It also switches on w hen you
turn the dia l or press any button . Airflow from outside is
blocked when the climate control
system is switched off.
You can activate the residual heat function
when the ignition is off by pressing and hold­
ing the ~ button. The residua l heat from the
coolant is used to heat the vehicle i nterior.
The residua l heat function switches off auto­
matically after about 30 minutes.
IACI Switching cooling mode on/off
T he air is not coo led and humidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off.
T his can cause fog on the windows. Cooling
mode switches off automatically when the
outside temperature is be low zero .
1-1 Switching recirculation mode on/off
In recircu lation mode, the air inside the vehi ­
cle is circulated and filtered . This prevents the
u nfiltered air outside the vehicle from enter­
ing the vehicle interior. We recommend
switching recirculation mode on when driving
through a tunne l or when sitting in traff ic
c::> ,&. .

IAUTO I Switching automatic mode on
Automatic mode mainta ins a constant tem­
perature inside the vehicle. Air temperature,
airflow and air distribution are controlled au­
tomatically.
Adjusting the temperature
Temperatu res between 60 °F (+16 °C) and
84 °F ( +28 °C) can be set. O uts ide of this
range,
lo or hi wi ll appear in the climate con ­
trol system disp lay. At both of these settings,
the climate control system runs continuously
at maximum cooling or heating power. There
is no temperature regu lation.
~ Adjusting the airflow
You can adjust the airf low manually to suit
your needs . To have the airf low regulated au­
tomatically, press the
I AUTO j button.
li!J Adjusting the air distribution
You can manually se lect the vents where the
air will flow. To have the air distribution regu­
lated automatically, press the
IAUTOI button .
~I~* Adjusting seat heating/
ventilation*
Pressing the button switches the seat heat­
ing/ventilation on at the highest setting ( level
3). The LEDs indicate the heating/ventilation
level. To reduce the heating/venti lation, press
the button again. To switch the seat heating/
ventilation off, press the button repeatedly
until the LED turns off.
After 10 minutes, the seat heating automati­
cally switches from level 3 to level 2.
l The windshield and side windows are defrost­
ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possible. The maximum amount of air flows
mainly from the vents below the windshield.
Recirculation mode switches off . The tempera­
ture should be set to 72 °F (22 °C) or higher.
The
IAU TOI button switches the defroster off.

liiii REAR ! Switching rear window heater
on/off
The rear window heater only operates when
the engine is running. It switches off auto­ matically after 10 to 20 minutes, depending
o n the outside temperature.
To prevent the rear window heater from
switching off automatically, press and ho ld
the ~ button for more than 2 seconds. This
remains stored until the ignition is switched
off .
I SYNC I Synchronization*
When synchronization is switched on, the
same settings are applied to both the driver
and front passenger, except for the seat heat­
ing/ventilation*. The rear zone is also
synchronized. Synchronization switches off
when the settings for the front passenger s ide
o r r ear are adjusted.
You can also switch synchronization on by pressing and holding a dial. For example, if
you press and hold the dial on the front pas­
senger side, the settings for that side are
transferred to the driver side. The same ap­
plies to the rear.
Air vents
You can open or close the center and outer
vents in the cockpit and the vents in the rear
cente r console and door pillars using the
ridged thumbwheels. The levers adjust the di­
rection of the airflow from the vents.
&_ WARNING

-Do not use the recirc ulation for extended
periods of time . The windows could fog
up since no fresh air can enter the vehi­
cle . If the windows fog up, press the air
recirculation button aga in immediately
to switch off the air recirculation func­
tion or se lect defrost.
- Individuals w ith reduced sensitivity to
pa in or temperature cou ld deve lop burns
when using the seat heating function . To
red uce the risk of injur y, these individu-
als should not use seat heating. ..,.

Electromechanical
parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces
the hand brake.

Your vehicle is equipped with an electrome ­
chan ical park ing brake . The parking brake is
designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
un intent ionally and rep laces the hand brake.
In addition to the normal functions of a tradi ­
tional hand brake, the electromechan ical
parking brake provides var ious convenience
and safety functions.
When starting from rest
-The integral starting assist helps you when
driving by automat ically releasing the park­
ing brake ¢

- When starting on inclines, the starting as ­
sist prevents the vehicle from unintentional­
ly rolling back . The braking force of the
parking brake is not released until suff icient
driv ing force has been built up at the
wheels.

-Yo u can apply the parking brake at any
time -even with the ignition switched
off. The ignition must be on and the
brake pedal must be pressed in order to
release the parking brake.
- Occasional noises when the parking
brake is applied and released are normal
and are not a cause for concern.
- When the vehicle is parked, the parking
brake goes through a self-test cycle at

components (ABS, ASR, EDL). In corners
and when road or weather conditions are
bad, a full brake application can cause the
vehicle to skid or the rear end to break
away· risking an accident.
Speed warning system
Introduction
The speed warning system helps you to stay
under a specified maximum speed.
The speed warning system wa rns you if you
are exceeding the maximum speed that you
have set. You will hear a warn ing tone when
your speed exceeds the stored value by ap­
proximately 3 mph (3 km/h). An indicator
light . (USA models)/ . (Canada models) in
the instrument cluster display also turns on at
the same time. The indicator light ••
turns off when the speed decreases below the
stored maximum speed .
Setting a threshold is recommended if you
would like to be reminded when you reach a certain max imum speed . Situations where you
may want to do so include driving in a country
with a general speed limit or if there is a
specified maximum speed for winter tires.
@ Tips
Even though your vehicle is equipped with
a speed warning system, you should st ill
watch the speedometer to make sure you
are not driving faster than the speed limit.
Setting the threshold
You can set, change and delete the threshold
in the MMI.

You can set any threshold between 20 mph
(30 km/h) and lS0 mph (240 km/h) . Settings
can each be adjusted in inc rements of 6 mph

When approaching a moving vehicle up ahead,
the adaptive cruise control system automati­
cally brakes to match that object's speed and
then maintains the stored distance. If the ve­
h icle ahead accelerates, adaptive cruise con­
trol will also accelerate up to the stored
speed.
The higher the speed , the greater the distance
in yards (meters)

Depending on the driving situation and the
how the vehicle ahead is driving, the actual
d istance may be more or less than these tar ­
get distances.

sponds to a distance of 92 feet/28 meters
when traveling at 62 mph (100 km/h), or a

time inte rval of 1.3 seconds .
~--- ~-Distance 3: This setting corre­
sponds to a distance of 164 feet/SO meters

time interval of 1.8 seconds .

sponds to a distance of 210 feet/64 meters

Following other vehicles too closely in­
creases the risk of collisions and serious
personal inj ury.
- Setting short distances to the traffic
ahead reduces the time and distance
available to bring your vehicle to a safe
stop and makes it even more necessary
to pay close attention to traffic. -
Always obey applicable traffic laws, use
good judgment, and select a safe follow­ ing d istance for the traff ic, road and
weather conditions.

- Distance 3 is set automatically each time

Active lane assist
Description
App lies to vehicles: with active lane assist
Active lane assist helps you keep your vehicle
in your lane .
Active lane assist detects lane marker lines
within the limits of the system using a camera
in the windshield . If you are approaching a de­
tected lane marker line and it appears likely
that you w ill leave the lane, the system will
warn you by means of corrective steer ing . T he
d river can over ride the correct ive steer ing at
any time. If the veh icle crosses a line, the d riv­
er is also warned by a light
vibration in the
steering wheel. The vibration warning must be switched on in the MMI for this to happen.
Active lane ass ist is operable when the line
marking the lane is detected on at least one
side of the vehicle .
If the system is in active standby mode and
the turn signa l is activated before driving over
the lane marker line, the warning does not oc­
cur since the system allows for intentional lane changes.
The system is designed for driv ing on free ­
ways and expanded highways and thus works
only at speeds of 40 mph (65 km/h) or more .
If the vehicle is also equ ipped with Audi adap­
tive cruise control*, the corrective steering
will be more specific in regard to the driving
situation . In addition to the lane marker lines,
the system can also take into account other
objects such as guard rails . If they are detect­
ed i n close prox imity to the veh icle, Audi ac­
tive lane ass ist helps prevent the vehicle from
driving too close to them . There is also pass ­
ing assistance. The system does not provide
any corrective steering if it detects that you
are passing another vehicle.
A WARNING , ~
- The system warns the driver that the ve­
hicle is leaving the lane us ing corrective steer
ing. The driver is always responsible
for keeping the vehicle within the lane .
- The system can assist the driver in keep­
ing the vehicle in the lane, but it does
not steer by itself. Always keep your
hands on the steering wheel.
- Corrective steer ing may not occur in cer­
tain situat ions, such as dur ing heavy
brak ing .
- The camera does not recognize all lane
marker lines. Corrective steer ing can only
take p lace on the side of the vehicle
where lane marker lines are detected .
- Other road structures or objects cou ld
possibly be identified un intent ional ly as
lane marker lines . As a res ult, correct ive
steer ing may be unexpected or may not
occ ur.
- The camera view can be restricted, for
examp le by vehicles driving ahead o r by
r ai n, snow, heavy spray or light shining
into the camera. T his can result in act ive
lane assist not detecting the lane marker
lines or detect ing them incorrectly .
- Unde r ce rtain condi tions such as ruts in
the road, a banked roadway or cross­
winds, the co rrective steering alone may
not be eno ugh to keep the vehicle in the
lane.
- For safety reasons, active lane ass ist
must not be used when there are poor
road and/or weather conditions such as
slippery roads, fog, grave l, heavy rain,
snow and the potential for hydroplaning.
Using act ive lane assist under these con­
d itions may increase the risk of a crash.

ing.
A WARNING
Improper use of the A udi drive select can
cause collisions, ot her acc idents and se ri­
ous pe rsonal injury.
Description
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on
the veh icl e's featu res. The engine, t ransm is­
sion, stee ring, reve rsible sa fe ty belt tension­
e rs a nd adap tive air su spension are alw ays in­
volved.
Engine and transmission
Depending on the mode, the e ng ine and the
tra nsmission respond quic ker or i n a more bal­
an ced manne r to acce le rator pedal move­
men ts. In the sporty dyn ami c mode, the
tra nsmission sh ifts at highe r RP Ms.
Air suspension*
The adaptive air suspens ion/adaptive air sus­
pension spor t*
(Air suspen sion in the MM I) is
a n e lec tronic ally con trolled air suspension and
da mpi ng sys tem. They are adjus ted depend­
ing on the se lected driving mode, the drive r's
steeri ng, braking an d acceleration input and
the road s urface, ve hicle speed and load. A
sporty setting is generally used in ve hicles
with adaptive air suspension sport*. T
he veh icle clearance varies depending on the
se lected mo de an d the speed .
T he highway setti ng is a ct ivated automatic ally
whe n you dr ive above 7 5 mph (120 km/ h) fo r
more than
3 0 seconds in the Auto or Dynamic
mode. The gro und clea rance is increased a uto ­
matically if the speed drops below
44 mph
(70 km/h) for more than 120 seconds.
Steering
T he s teer ing adap ts in terms of s teer ing effor t
and steering ratios . Indirect stee ring that
moves easily, like the steer ing in comfo rt
mode, is best suited to long drives on a high­
way. In contrast, dynamic mode provides sporty, direct steer ing .
The following app lies to veh icles with dynamic
stee ring* : the steer ing rat io changes based on
vehicle speed in order to ma intain optimum
steering effort for the drive r at all times. This
sets the stee ring to be less sens itive at higher
speeds in order to provide improved vehicl e
control. At reduced speeds, howeve r, s te e ring
is mo re dir ect in o rder to keep the stee ring ef­
f or t as minima l as possible when the drive r is
mane uveri ng the veh icle. At low and average
speeds, dynamic stee ring ad dit iona lly pro ­
vides more responsive steering pe rformance .
Adaptive dampers*
The ad aptive dampe rs* use se nsors to re cord
i nforma tion r egarding steering movemen ts,
braking and ac celera tion ope ra tions by the
driver, road surface, d riving speed, and loa d.
T his ma kes it possible to adapt damp ing to
the driving situation v irtually in rea l time.
Drive select also makes it possib le to satisfy
the des ire fo r sporty suspension (Dynamic)
and comfortab le suspens ion (Comfort) with­
out giving up ba lance d tuning (Auto) .
Sport differential*
As a component of the all whee l dr ive system
(quattro)

distributes the d riving power to the rear ax le
depe nd ing on the si tuati on. The dis trib ution
of power var ies depend ing on the selected
mode, from balance d (comfo rt) to agile ..,.

Introduction
The automatic transmission is controlled elec­
tronically. The transmission upshifts or down­
shifts automatically depending on which drive program is selected.
When a
moderate driving style is used, the
transmission selects the most economical driving mode. It will then change up early and
delay the downshifts to give better fuel econ­
omy.
The transmission switches to a sporty mode
after a k ick-down or when the driver uses a
sporty driving style characterized by quick ac­
celerator pedal movements, heavy accelera­
tion, frequent changes in speed and traveling
at the maximum speed.
If desired, the driver can also select the gears
manually (tiptronic mode ) ¢ page 108.
In the tiptronic transmission, power is trans­
ferred by a torque converter.
Selector lever positions

The selector lever position engaged appears
next to the selector lever as well as in the in­
strument cluster display.
P- Park
In this selector lever position the transmis­
sion is mechanically locked. Engage P only when
the vehicle is
completely stopped¢ &

To shift in or out of posit ion P, you must first
press and hold the brake pedal and then press
the re lease button in the selector lever handle
wh ile moving the selector lever to or from P.
You can shift out of this position only with the
ignition on.
R -Reverse
Select R only when the vehicle is at a full stop
and the engine is running at idle speed¢ & in

page 106.
Before you move the selector lever to R, press
both the button in the hand le of the se lector
lever
and the brake pedal at the same time.
When the ignition is on, the backup lights illu­
minate when the selector lever is moved into
R.
N -Neutral
Th e transmission is in neutral in this position.
Shift to this position for standing with the
brakes applied

When the vehicle is stat ionary or at speeds
below 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply
the footbrake before and wh ile moving the
lever out of N.
D/S - Normal position for driving forward
In the D/S position, the transmission can be
operated either in the normal mode D or in
the sport mode 5. To select the sport mode 5,
pull the selector lever back brie fly. Pulling the
lever back again will select the normal mode
D. The instrument cluster disp lay shows the
se lected driving mode.
In the normal mode D, the transm ission auto­
matically selects the suitable gear ratio.
It de­
pends on engine load, vehicle speed and driv­
ing style.
Select the sport mode 5 for sporty driving.
The vehicle makes full use of the engine's

power. Shi fting may become noticeable when
accelerating .
When the veh icle is stationary or at speeds
be low 1 mph (2 km/h), you must always apply
the foot brake before and while moving the
lever to D/S out of N.
A WARNING
Read and follow all WARNINGS ¢.& in

page 106.
(D Note
Coasting downhill with the transmission in
N and the engine not running will result in
damage to the automatic transmission
and possibly the catalytic converter.

The Automatic Shift Lock safeguards you
against accidentally shifting into a forward or
the reverse gear and causing the vehicle to
move unintentionally.

The selector lever is locked in the P and N po·
s itions when the ignition is turned on . You
must p ress the brake pedal and the re lease
button to select another position . As a re­

Wh en stationary apply brake pedal while se­
lect ing gear
The Automatic Shift Lock only funct ions when
the veh icle is stationa ry o r at speeds below
1 mph (2 km/h) .
At speeds above about 1 mph (2 km/h) the
Automat ic Shift Lock is automatically deact i­
vated in the N position .
A time delay element prevents the selector
lever from locking when it is moved through
the N pos ition (go ing from R to D/S) . The lock·
i ng eleme nt will lock the selec to r l ever if the
IIJ,,

activate the parking brake and move the
selector lever to P.
- Power is sti ll transmitted to the wheels
when the engine is running at idle. To
prevent the vehicle from "creeping", you
must keep your foot on the brake when
the engine is running and the selector
lever is in D/S or R or "tiptronic" mode is
selected.
- Do not press the accelerator pedal when changing the selector lever pos ition
wh ile the vehicle is stat ionary and the
engine is running .
- Never shift into
R or P wh ile driving .
- Before driv ing down a steep slope, re -
duce your speed and shift into a lower
gear with "tiptronic".
- Do not ride the brakes or press the brake
peda l too often or too long when dr iv ing
down a hill. Constant braking causes the brakes to ove rheat and substant ially re­
duces braking performance, increases
braking distance or ca uses comp lete fail ­
vre of the brake system .
- To prevent the vehicle from rolling back
when stopping on inclines, always hold it in place with the brake pedal or parking
brake.
- Never hold the vehic le on an incline with
a slipping clutch . The clutch opens auto ­
matically when it becomes too hot from
the overload. An indicator lamp
[O] illu­
minates and a dr iver message appears
~ page 108 when the clutch is overload­
ed .
- If the engine must remain running, never have any driv ing position engaged when
check ing under the hood.
M ake sure the
selector lever has secure ly engaged and
is locked in P with the parking bra ke set
¢ page 213 . Otherwise, any increase in
engine speed may set the vehicle in mo ­
t ion, even with the park ing brake ap­
plied.
(D Note
- When stopping on an incline, do not try to hold the vehicle in place by pressing

the acce lerator pedal while a d riving gea r
is se lected. This can cause the transmis­
sion to ove rheat and can damage it. Acti ­
vate the parking brake or press the brake peda l to prevent the vehicle from rolling .
- Allowing the vehicle to roll when the en­ gine is stopped and the selector lever is
in N will damage the transmission be­
cause
i t is not lubricated under those cir ­
cumstances.

leased automatically o nly when the driv­
e r's safety belt is engaged in the buckle .
, Hill descent control
The hill descent control system assists the
driver when driving down declines .
Hill descent contro l is activa ted when these­
lector lever is in D/S and you press the brake
pedal. The transmission automatically selects
a gear that is suitable for the incline . H ill de ­
scent cont ro l t ries to ma inta in the speed ach­
ieved a t the t ime of braking, with in phys ica l
and tec hni cal lim itations. If may st ill be nec­
essary to adj ust the speed with the brakes .
Hill descent contro l sw itches off once the de­
cl in e leve ls out or yo u press the acce le rato r
pedal.
On vehicles with the cruise cont ro l system*
¢ page 79 , hill descent control is also activat­
ed whe n the speed is set.
