Audi adapt ive crui se c ontrol an d bra kin g guard 81
Audi adaptive cruise
control and braking
guard
Introduction
App lies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise control
The adaptive cruise control system assists the
driver by regu lating vehicle speed and helping
to maintain a set distance to the vehicle
ahead, within the limits of the system . If the
system detects a moving vehicle up ahead,
adaptive cruise control can brake and then acÂ
celerate your vehicle. Th is he lps to make drivÂ
ing more comfortable both on long highway
stretches and in stop-and-go traffic.
The braking guard system can warn you about
an impending collision and initiate braking
maneuvers¢
page 87.
Adaptive cruise control and braking guard
have technical limitations that you must
know, so please read this section carefully, unÂ
derstand how the system works and use them
properly at all times.
General information
General information
Applies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise control
Fig. 86 Front of the vehicle: sensors and video came ra
The areas that contain the radar and ultrason Â
ic sensors and the v ideo camera ¢
fig. 86
must neve r be covered by stickers or other obÂ
jects or obstructed with dirt, insects, snow or
ice that will interfere with the adaptive cruise
control system and braking guard. For inforÂ
mation on cleaning, refer to¢
page 203. The same applies for any modifications made in
the front area.
T he function of the adaptive cru ise contro l
system and braking guard is limited under
some conditions:
- Objects can on ly be detected when they are
w ith in sensor range
¢page 83, fig. 89 .
-The system has a limited ability to detect
objects that are a shor t distance ahead,
off
t o the side of your vehicle or moving into
your lane.
- Some kinds of ve hicles are hard to detect;
for examp le motorcycles, vehicles with high
ground clearance or overhanging loads may
be detected when it is too late or they may
not be detected at all.
- When driving through curves
¢page 82 .
- Stationary objects¢ page 82.
& WARNING
Always pay attent ion to traffic when adap Â
tive cruise control is switched on and brak ing g uard is active. As the driver, you are
still respons ible for starting and for ma inÂ
taining speed and distance to other obÂ
jects . Braking guard is used to assist you .
The driver must always take action to avo id
a collision. The driver is always responsible
for braking at the co rrect time.
- Improper use of adaptive cru ise control
can cause collisions, other acc idents and
serious pe rsonal in jury.
- Never let the comfort and conven ience
that adaptive cruise control and braking
guard offer d istract you from the need to
be alert to traffic condit ions and the
need to rema in in full control of your veÂ
hicle at all times,
- Always remember that the adaptive
cruise control and braking guard have
limits -they will not s low the vehicle
down or maintain the set distance when
you drive towards an obstacle or someÂ
thing on or near the road that is not
mov ing, such as vehicles stopped in a
traffic jam, a stalled or disabled vehicle .

your vehicle does not start driving as exÂ
pected after pulling the lever once, you
can start out again by tapping the accelÂ
erator pedal.
-If an obstacle is detected when your veÂ
hicle sta rts driving, the system will
prompt you to take over¢

Your vehicle will drive more slow ly when
starting. This may also happen in some
situations when no obstacle is apparent.

stopped vehicle or stationary obstacle (end of a traffic jam or vehicle that has
broken down in traffic).
- Always remember that the radar sensor
for the braking guard works only within
defined detection and range limits that
may prevent the proper detection of othÂ
er vehicles.
- The radar sensor's function and range
can be reduced by rain, snow and heavy
spray . Moving vehicles up ahead may not
be promptly detected or may not be deÂ
tected at all.
- Reflective surfaces including crash barriÂ
ers or tunnel entrances may impair the
function of the radar sensor.
({) Tips
-You can cancel the braking with increasÂ
ing force that is initiated by the system
by braking yourself, by accelerating noÂ
ticeably or by swerving.

(dynamic). The goal is a high level of agility
and ability to accelerate on curves. The vehicle
is very responsive to steering.
Curve light*
The curve light adapts to driving on curves.
The pivoting action and the lighting are also
adapted to the mode.
Adaptive cruise control*
The behavior when accelerating can be adjustÂ
ed from comfo rtable to sporty, depending on
the drive se lect mode . Adaptive cruise control
also responds to the driving behavior of the
vehicle ahead in a more conservative or sporty
manner .
Engine sound
The sound of the engine is adapted to theseÂ
l ected mode and ranges from subtle to sporty.
(D Note
-Make sure there is enough clearance
above and below the vehicle when parkÂ
in g. The height of the vehicle can change
once it is parked due to temperature
fluctuations, changes to the load condiÂ
tions and changes to the driving modes,
which can affect clearance.
- When transporting the vehicle on a car
carrier, train, ship or by other means, onÂ
ly tie the veh icle down at the running
surface of the tires, which is the outer
circumference. Securing the vehicle at
the axle components, suspension struts
or tow ing eyes is not permitted because
the pressure in the air suspension struts
can change during transport. The vehicle
may not be secured sufficiently if this
happens.
(D} Tips
- In some models, the maximum vehicle
speed can only be reached in the
Auto
and Dynamic modes.
- Se lecting the
Dynamic mode results in
spo rty shifting characteristics. The S
gear position engages automatically .
Audi drive select 97
-In vehicles that have dynamic steering*,
operating noise is heard when starting or
stopping the engine. This does not indiÂ
cate a problem.
Selecting the driving mode
You can choose between Comfort, Auto, DyÂ
namic and Individual.
Fig. 106 MMI: Drive select
.,. To select the mode, select the following in

You can change the driving mode when the veÂ
hicle is stationary or wh ile driving. If traffic
permits, after changing modes, briefly take
your foot off the accelerator pedal so that the
recently selected mode is also activated for
the engine.
Comfort · provides a comfort-oriented veh icle
setup and is suited for long drives on h ighÂ
ways.
Auto · provides an overall comfortable yet dyÂ

use .
Dynamic -gives the driver a sporty driving

Homelink
Universal remote
control
General information
Applies to vehicles: with Home link unive rsal remote conÂ
tro l
The Homelink universal remote control can
be programmed with hand-held transmitters
from existing equipment
With Home link, you can control devices such
as the garage door, security systems, house
lights, etc. comfortably from the inside of you
vehicle.
Homelink makes it possible for you to replace
three different remote controls from devices
in your home with one universal remote . This
feature works for most garage door and exte rior door motor signals. Programmi ng the inÂ
d iv idual remote control for your remote conÂ
trol takes place near the center of the radiator
grille. There is a control module attached at
this location .
A one-t ime programming of the sensor must
be performed before you are able to use sysÂ
tems with Homelink.
A WARNING , .,.
- Never use the Homelink transmitter
with any garage door opener that does
have not the safety stop and reverse feaÂ
ture as required by federal safety standÂ
ards . Th is includes any garage door open Â
er model manufactured before April 1, 1982.
- A garage door opener which cannot deÂ
tect an object, signaling the door to stop
and reverse does not meet current federÂ
al safety standards . Us ing a garage door
opener without these features increases
risk of serious injury or death.
- For safety reasons
never release the
parking brake or start the engine while
anyone is standing in front of the vehicle .
- A garage door or an estate gate may sometimes be set in motion when the
H ome link 121
Homelink remote control is being proÂ
grammed. If the device is repeatedly acÂ
tivated, this can overstrain motor and
damage its electrical components -an
overheated motor is a fire hazard!
- To avoid possible injuries or property
damage, please always make absolutely
certa in that no persons or objects are loÂ
cated in the range of motion of any
equipment being ope rated.
