Door contact activation
- Move the switch to the center position. The forward
dome light is turned on/off by the contact switches on
any of the doors.
Forward dome light on
Move the switch to position I. The forward dome light
goes on and stays on regardless of door position.
Forward dome light off
- Move the switch to position 0. The light will not go on
regardless of door position.
Forward reading lights ~
-Press the left or right switch ® to switch the left or right
forward reading light on or off.
Glove compartment light
- Open the glove compartment - the light in the glove
compartment automatically illuminates as long as the
side marker lights or headlights are on. When you close
the glove compartment, the light goes off.
With the interior light switch at the door contact (center} position, the forward dome light illuminates whenever you unlock the vehicle
or open a door . The dome light goes out after approximately 30
seconds after you have closed the door. Likewise, when you lock
your vehicle or switch on the ignition, the dome light goes out.
If you leave a door open, the dome light will go out after ten minutes
to conserve battery charge.
A dimmer automatically controls the brightness of the lights when
they are switched on .•

When you switch on the ignition, the lights in the door handles illu ­
minate .
When the side marker lights or headlights are switched on, the
center console is illuminated from the ambient light located above
the windshield.
You cannot manually turn off these lights.•

Seats and storage
& WARNING
For strength-related reasons, heavy objects must not be hung on
the hooks. Heavy objects are not adequately secured -this
increases the risk of injury. •
Retractable luggage compartment cover
The luggage compartment cover keeps luggage or other
objects out of view.

Removing the luggage compartment cover
Detach the retaining straps=> fig. 89 at the rear hatch G).
-Pull the cover 0 horizontally out of the mount@ in the
direction of the arrow.
Installing the luggage compartment cover
- Push the cover horizontally into the mounts provided
=> fig. 89@ on the side panel until the cover seats.
- Install the retaining straps in the rear hatch => fig. 89

& WARNING
• The luggage compartment cover must never be installed
without being secured -this creates an accident hazard.
• Whenever driving, never place any hard or heavy objects on the
luggage compartment or allow pets to sit on the luggage compart­
ment cover . They could become a hazard to vehicle occupants in
the event of sudden braking or in an accident.

Make sure that the heating wires in the rear lid do not get damaged
by objects scraping against them.
[ i ] Tips
• You can use the luggage compartment cover to store light
weight clothing but do not leave any heavy or sharp objects in the
pockets of the clothing.
• Remember that placing clothing on the luggage compartment
cover can block the driver's vision in the rear view mirror. This also
applies especially when you have to transport large objects.
• So that stale air can escape from the vehicle be sure not to cover
the ventilation slot between the rear lid and the luggage compart ­
ment cover installed. •

& WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjustment and improper seating
position can cause serious personal injury .
• Adjust the steering wheel column only when the vehicle is not
moving to prevent loss of vehicle control .
• Always make sure that the adjustment lever is securely pushed
up so that the position of the steering wheel cannot be changed
unintentionally when the vehicle is moving .
• Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel so that there is a
minimum of 10 inches {25 cm ) between your breastbone and the
steering wheel=>
page 128 , fig. 128. If you cannot maintain this
minimum distance the airbag system cannot protect you properly.
• If physical limitations prevent you from sitting 10 inches (25
cm) or more from the steering wheel, check with your authorized
Audi dealer to see if adaptive equipment is available.
• Pointing the steering wheel toward your face decreases the
ability of the supplemental driver's airbag to protect you
in an
accident . Always make sure that the steering wheel is pointed
towards your chest.
• Always hold the steering wheel on the outside of the steering
wheel rim with your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions
to help reduce the risk of personal injury if the driver's airbag
inflates.
• Never hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock position or with
your hands at other positions inside the steering wheel rim or on
the steering wheel hub. Holding the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands, arms and head if the
driver's airbag inflates. •

Ignition lock and ignition switch

The engine can be s tar ted or tu rned off with the ignition
key.

In position => fig. 113 ® both the ignit ion and engine are off, and
the steering is locked .
To
lo ck the stee ring after you have removed the ignition key, turn
t he steering whee l in either direction until you hear i t lock into
place . You should always lock the steering whenever you leave your
vehic le . This makes a vehicle theft even more difficult => & .
Ignition on G)
If it is difficult to turn the key af ter you have inserted i t into the igni­
tion lock, turn the steering wheel back and forth . This will take the
load off the steering lock mechanism and you wil l be able to turn the
key freely and start the engine .
Starting the engine @
In this position the engine starts . Whi le the engine is starting, the
power supply to the headlights and o ther elec trical consumers is
temporari ly interrupted to conserve battery power . After the engine
has started, release the key and it will return to position
G).
Before the starter can be operated again the key must be turned
back to posi tion
G) . The non -repeat lock prevents you from
damaging the starter when the engine is running.
& WARNING
• Never remove the key from the ign ition lo ck w hile the veh icle is
moving. The steering wheel will lo ck causing lo ss of control .
• If you h ave to leave your vehicle -even for just a minute -
alway s remove the ignition key and take it w ith you . Thi s is es pe ­
c ially important if you are going to leave ch ildren behind in the
vehicle. The children could start the engine or u se other vehi cle
c ontrol s. Unsupervi sed u se of veh icle cont rol s ( for e xamp le , powe r
window s) can cau se serious per sonal injurie s.
[ i ] Tips
If the veh icle battery has been disconnected and then reconnected,
then you must leave the key in position
G) for about 5 seconds
before you can start the engine .•

Ignition key safety lock
The ign ition key can only be rem oved when the selec tor
le ver i s in the "P" (Par k) p osition.
Place the selector lever in the "P" position before switching off the
engine .
After switching off the ignition, the ignition key can only be
removed from the ignition lock when the se lector lever is in the "P"
(Park) position. A fter you have removed the key , the selector lever is
locked and cannot be moved .•

Manual transmission
Applies to vehicles: with manual transmission
Gearshift lever
The clutch pedal must be depressed all the way bef ore
you can start the engine .
The manual transmission in your Audi is equipped with an
interlock-feature .
-Depress the clutch pedal all the way.
- Start the engine w ith the gearsh ift lever in Neutral and
the clutch pedal depressed.
0 Note
Always depress the clutch pedal fully when changing gears. Do not
hold the vehicle on a hi ll with the c lu tch pedal par tia lly depressed.
This may cause premature clutch wear or damage .

• Resting your hand on the gearshift lever knob while driving will
cause prematu re wear in the transmission .
• The back -up lights go on when you shift into Reverse with the
ignition on. •

Drive in 6th gear for optimum fuel economy when cruising.
However, if more acce leration is required (when passing, for
example), shift down.

- Move the shift lever all the way to the left, press it down,
then push it forward.
Especial ly after driving forwa rd, stop the vehicle completely, shift
into
Neutral and rest the sh ift lever brief ly in Neutral before shifting
into
Reverse. •

S tronic transmission

Introduction
Your vehicle is equipped with a S tronic transmission, also called a
double -clutch system/transmission.
Power is transferred between the engine and the transmission by
means of two independent clutches. They replace the torque
~
converter of conventiona l automatic transmissions and allow the
vehic le to acce lerate without a noticeable break in the power flow.
With the aid of
tiptronic , the gears can optionally be shifted manu­
ally => page 121. •

Selector lever positions
All the selector lever positions are explained in this
section.

The se lector lever position is shown in the instrument cluster
display by highlighting the appropriate symbol.
Controls and equip ­
ment P
-Park lock
In this position the gears are mechanically locked .
The park lock must only be engaged with the veh icle
stationary
=> & .
To engage P and to remove the lever from this position, you must
depress the release button (button in the se lector lever handle)
and
simultaneously you must step on the brake pedal.
R -reverse
In this position, reverse is engaged.
Reverse gear must only be engaged with the vehicle
stationary and
the engine running at idle speed =>& .
To engage R, you have to depress the release button
and simulta­
neously step on the brake pedal. In the R position, the back -up lights
illuminate with the ignition on.
N -Neutral
The transmission is in neutral in this position .
D -Normal position for driving forward
In this position, the forward gears are automatically shifted up and
down, depending on engine load and vehicle speed.
To engage S from N, the brake pedal must be depressed at speeds
below 5 km/h or when the vehicle is stationary=>& .
In certain circumstances (driving in the mountains for example) it
can be beneficial to switch temporarily to the manua l shift program
=> page 121 in order to adjust the gear ratios to driving conditions
manually .
S -Sport setting
The S setting should be selected for sporting driving . The power
reserves of the engine can be fully exploi ted through later upshifts.
To engage S from N, the brake pedal must be depressed at speeds
below 5 km/h or when the vehicle is stationary =>& .

& WARNING
• Never p lace the selector lever in the R or P position while the
vehic le is moving -risk of an accident!
• With the eng ine running , it is necess ary to hold the vehicle w ith
the foot brake in all selector lever positions (except P and N },
because even at idle speed the transfer of power is never
c ompletely interrupted -the vehicle "creeps ". If the vehicle i s
stationary and the transmi ssion is engaged , the eng ine should
never be speeded up unintentionally (e.g . manually from under the
hood }. Otherwi se the vehicle will immediately start to move -
sometimes even if the parking brake is firmly applied -risk of an
accident !
• Before you or other persons open the hood and work on a
running engine , the selector lever mu st be moved to P and the
parking br ake applied firmly -risk of an accident! Follow the
warning stickers=>
page 217 , "Engine compartment ".

If you have inadvertent ly shift ing into N while the vehicle is mov ing,
you should remove your foot from the accelerator and wait unti l the
engin e speed ha s dropped to id le befor e shifting bac k to Dor S . •

Automatic select or lever lock 6ll
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the igni ­
t io n is on . To move the lever fr om these positions th e driver must
depress the brake pedal. As a reminder to the driver , the following
wa rn ing appears in the instru ment cl uster display when the selecto r
is in P and N :

The selector lever lock is effective only when the vehicle is
stationary and at speeds below 5 km/h. At higher speeds, the lock in
the N position is automatically switched off .
The selector lever is not locked when rapid shifts are made through
the N position (e.g. from R to Dl. This allows you to "rock" the vehicle
if it becomes stuck. If the lever is in the N position for more than
1 second with the brake pedal not depressed, the selector lock
engages automatically .
Release button
The release button in the selector lever handle prevents accidental
shifts into certain selector lever positions . When you press the
release button, the selector lever lock is cancelled . In the illustra ­
tion, the positions in which the release button has to be pressed are
highlighted in color~
page 718, fig. 121.
Ignition key removal lock
The ignition key can only be remove after the ignition is switched off
if the selector lever is in P. As long as the ignition key is removed, the
selector lever is locked in P.
[ i) Tips
If the selector lever does not engage, there is a malfunction . The
engine is disabled to prevent the vehicle from driving off uninten­
tiona lly. To allow the selector lever to engage again, proceed as
follows: Press and release the brake pedal. •

Stopping on an incline

not try to

Starting on a hill

The engine can only be started wi th th e selector lever i n P or N
=> pa ge 109. At low ambient temperatures (14 °F / -1 0 °C), it is only
po ss ibl e to s tart the e ng ine wi th the selec tor leve r in P .
Whe n pa rki ng on leve l g ro und, i t is su fficien t to plac e th e se lec tor
lever in P. On a steeply s lop ing road, you should first app ly the
pa rk in g br ake fi rmly and then p lace th e selec tor lever in P. T hi s w ay ,
you do not overload the pawl mechanism and it is easier to move
th e s elector lever out of P .
& WARNING
• Never leave your veh icle with the engine running while in gear .
If you must leave your vehicle with the engine running, set the
parking brake and engage the park lock.
• When the engine is running and the transmission is in gear (0 ,
S or R l or in "tiptronic " mode , it is essential that you stop the
vehicle with the footbrake . When idling , the transmission of power
does not stop completely -the vehicle "creeps ".
• Do not accelerate when you change the sele ctor lever position
with the vehicle stationary and the engine running -risk of an acci ­
dent!
• Never place the selector lever in the R or N po sition while the
vehicle is moving -risk of an accident !
& WARNING (continued)
• If you have to bring your vehicle to a stop while on an incline,
keep the foot brake depressed all the way down so that the vehicle
does not start to roll backward . You should never hold the vehicle
using the clutch pedal if you are going to be stopped on an incline .
If you do , the clutch will start to slip when it overheats caused by
the constant overload. This is dangerous because if the vehicle starts to roll backward , you could c ause an accident . If the clutch
should start to slip , you will feel the vehicle "jerk" and the selector
lever display will start blinking .
• Before driving down a steep slope , reduce your speed and shift
i nto a lower gear with "tiptronic ".
• Do not ride the brakes or apply the brake pedal too often or too
long . Constant braking causes the brakes to overheat and
substantially reduces braking performance, increa ses braking
distance or causes complete failure of the brake system . •

Hill Descent Assist

Hill Descent Ass is t is activated by press ing th e brake wh ile
descending when the selector lever is in
D /S . The S tronic t ransmis ­
s io n auto mati ca lly s hifts dow n to a ge ar s uita ble for the incl in e. Hill
Descent Assist attempts to maintain the current vehicle speed when
th e br akin g occu rs, as far as phys ical an d techn ica l lim it s a llow . It
may be necessary to adjust the speed using the brakes .
H ill Descent As sist switc hes off when the inc line leve ls out or when
the gas pedal is pressed.

-Carefully pry the selector lever boot out of the trim using
a small screwdriver @.
- Pull both sides of the boot upward in the direction of the
arrows @.
- Fold the boot upward.
Emergency release for selector lever
-Press the release lever toward the center of the vehicle
with the screwdriver ~
page 123, fig. 127@ and hold it
in this position.
- Now press the lock button on the selector lever @and
move the selector lever to the N position.
- Clip the shift boot back into the shift gate.
If the vehicle has to be pushed or towed if the power supply fails
(e.g. battery is discharged), the selector lever must be moved to the
N position using the emergency locking device.
& WARNING
The selector must only be shifted from the P position if the hand­
brake is firmly applied. Otherwise the vehicle would start moving
unexpectedly on a grade when the selector lever is shifted from
the P position -increasing the risk of an accident. •
