A WARNING ,~ ~
If the ~ (USA models)/ . (Canada
models) brake system indicator light turns
on together with the ABS and ESC indica­
tor lights, the ABS/ESC regulating function
may have failed. Functions that stabilize
t he vehicle are no longer avai lab le. This
cou ld cause the vehicle to swerve and in­
crease the risk of sliding . Drive caref ully to
the nearest a uthorized Audi dea ler and
have the malfunction corrected.

ABS/(@!) Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
This warning/indicator light monitors the ABS
and the electronic differential lock (EDL).
The warning/indicator light rII:1 (USA mod ­
els)/ [I] (Ca nada models) w ill come o n for a
few seconds when the ignition is switched on.
The light will go out after an a utomatic chec k
sequence is completed.
There is a malfunction in the ABS when :
- The warning/ indicator lig ht does not illumi ­
na te when you swi tc h t he ignition on.
- T he warning/i ndicator lig ht does not go out
after a few seconds .
- T he warn ing/ind icator lig ht illuminates
wh ile driving.
T he ESC indicator light also illuminates if
there is a malfunction in the ABS . The mes­
sage
Stabilization contro l (ESC) : Fault! See
owner 's manual
also appears in the inst ru­
men t clus ter display and a war ning tone
sounds.
Th e brake sy ste m will still respond even
without th e assi stan ce of the ABS sy ste m .

Malfunction in the brake system
If the brake war ning l igh t c::> page 15 and the
ABS wa rning illuminate
together there may be
a malfunct ion in the ABS , and there may a lso
be a malfunction in the brake system itself

tice a change in b raking response and per ­
formance .

Malfunction in th e electronic diff erential
lock (EDL)
The EDL works together w ith the ABS. The
ABS warning light will come on if there is a malfunction in the EDL system

poss ible.

- I f the trm (USA mode ls)/ [I] (Canad a
models) warning light does not go ou t,

or if it comes on while dr iving, the ABS
system is not wor king p roperly. The vehi­
cle can then be stopped only w it h the
standard brakes (without ABS). You w ill

lock up first under hard braking. Rear
wheel lock-up can cause loss of vehicle
con tro l and an accident. Have your

vehicle repaired immediately by your au­
thorized Audi dealer or qualified work­
shop. Drive slowly and avo id sudden,
hard brake applications.
~ J!f Safety systems
The
II (USA models)/ m (Canada models) in­
d icator light monitors the safety systems (e .g .
a ir bags, pretensioners) and illuminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition
on.
If the
ffl (USA models)/ EI (Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi­
nates whil e you are driv ing, or if it sta rts to
b link , then there is a malf unction somewhere
in the system. If the light does not illuminate
when you switch the ignition on, this also
means there is a ma lfunction.
A WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the safety sys­
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer
immediately . Otherwise the safety sys­
tems may not work properly in an acci­
dent .
(0) Worn brake pads
Ell Brake pads!
If the warning light illumina tes, immediately
contact your authorized Audi dealer or quali ­
fied workshop to have all brake pads inspect­
ed. On USA models the warning light

EPC Electronic power control
This warning/indicator light monitors the
electronic power control.
The ~ warning/indicator light (Electronic
Power Control) illuminates when you switch
the ignition on as a function check.
(D Tips
If this warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, then there is a mal­
function in the engine electronics. Have
the malfunct ion corrected as soon as pos­
sible by your authorized Audi dealer or a
qualified repair facility.
0 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
Th e Ma lfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is part
of the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) system.
T he symbo l¢• lights up when the ignition is
switched on and will turn off after the engine
has started and has settled at a constant idle
speed. This indicates that the MIL is working
properly.
T he warning light illuminates when there is a
malfunction in the engine electronic system .
Contact your authorized Audi dea ler and have
the malfunction corrected.

The IJI symbol illuminates when there is an
engine control malfunction. The
[3i indicator
light in the instrument cluster also illumi­
nates . The engine speed is limited to the
speed d isplayed in the driver information sys­
tem . Keep in mind that the eng ine speed will
not exceed the value displayed in the drive r in­
formation system , for example when down­
shifting.
Drive to your authorized Aud i dealer immedi ­
ately to have the malfunct ion corrected.

If the symbol illuminates, contact your au­
thor ized Audi dealer and have the o il sensor
i nspected . Until you have th is done, check the
oil level each time you refuel just to be on the
safe side

If the indicator light turns on for the first
time and the message appears, there are
about 2.1- 2.4 gallons (7 -9 liters) of fuel left

If the f:I indicator light turns on, a bulb has
failed. Th e message indicates the location of
the bu lb .
- If the
II indicator light also turns on, then
a fog light has failed . The position of the in­
dicator light corresponds with the location
on the vehicle .
- If the
IJ indicator light also turns on, then
a rear fog* light has failed . The position of
the indicator light corresponds with the lo­
cation on the vehicle.
T his warning can also occ ur if the light switch
is in an unengaged position between two sym­
bols.
Vehicle lights : System fault!
If the message appears, there is a malfunc­
tion in the headlights or light sw itch.
Drive to your au thorized Audi dealer immedi­
ately to have the malfunction corrected .
A WARNING
-Light bulbs a re p ressurized and could ex­
plode wh ile they are being changed caus­
ing serious personal injury.
- Work with due care when hand ling the
high-voltage section of gas discharge
(xenon) lights*. Failure to do so could re­
sult in death or serious injury .

Introduction
The Driver information display inside the in ­
strument cluster provides you, the driver ,
with important information .

With the ignition on, the display in the Dr iver

Auto Check C ontrol
Some f unctions and vehicle components are
scanned for their operating sta tus when yo u
switch the ign ition on and wh ile you are driv ­
ing . Malfunctions or required s ervice proce­
dures are signaled audib ly and indicated by
red and yellow illuminated symbols and re­
minders in the display .
A WARNING
-
- Never rely exclusively on the outside
temperature display to determine if a
road surface is icy o r not . Keep in m ind
th at r oad surfaces, espec ia lly br idges
and overpasses, co uld be ice covered and
slippery even at an outside tempe ratu re
above 41 ° F (+S °C).
- Always remember , even if the "snow­
f lake" symbo l (ice warning) does not ap­
pear in the d isp lay, black ice cou ld be on
the road .
- Always reduce your speed and drive with
special care in cold weather conditions
when the chance of encountering icy
road surfaces increases.
{I) Tips
If the vehicle is stationary, or if yo u a re
driving at a very lo w speed, the tempera­
ture shown in the display might be s light ly
higher than the actua l outs ide tempera­
ture. This is caused by the heat be ing radi­
ated from the engine .

Trip computer
Introduction
Applies to vehicles: wit h trip computer
The trip computer gives you information on
current and average fuel mileage, average
speed, fuel range and driving time .

The follow ing informat ion is continuously
evaluated by the trip computer and can be dis­
p layed sequentially in the instrument cluster
display:
Fuel range
The estimated cruising range in miles (km)
appears in the display. This tells you how far
your vehicle wi ll be able to t ravel on the cur ­
rent tank of fue l and with the same driving
style. The display changes in increments of
5 miles (10 km).
The cruising range is calculated based on the
fuel consumption for the last 18 miles
(30 km). If you drive conservatively, the cruis­
ing range will increase.
Average fuel mileage
The average fuel economy in MPG (l/100 km)
since you last cleared the memory appears in
this display. You can use this disp lay to adjust
your driving technique to achieve a desired mileage .
Current fuel mileage
The instantaneous fuel consumption in miles
per gallon (l/100 km) is shown in this display .
You can use this display to adjust your driving
technique to achieve a desired mileage. Fuel
consumption is recalcu lated at intervals
of 33 yards (30 meters). This disp lay switches
to gallons/hour (liters/hour) when the vehicle is not moving.
Average speed
The average speed in mph (km/h) s ince you
last reset the memory appears in the display.
Elapsed time
The length of time that you have been driving
s ince you last reset the memory appears in
th is disp lay.
Distance
The distance that has been covered since the
last t ime the memory was cleared appears in
the display.
(0 Tips
- Fuel consumptions (average and cur ­
rent), range and speed are displayed in
metric units on Canadian models.
- All stored values will be lost if the vehi­
cle battery is disconnected .
Memories
Applies to veh icles: w ith t rip co mputer
The trip computer is equipped with two fully
automatic memories as well as an efficiency
program* .

Single-trip memory (Trip computer 1)
The single -trip memory stores the trip infor­
mat ion from the time the ignition is turned on
until it is turned off. If the trip is continued
within 2 hours from the time the ignition was
turned off, the new data will be included in
the calculation of the current trip informa­
tion. If the trip is interrupted for
more than 2
hours the memory is reset automatically.
Total-trip memory (Trip computer 2)
Unlike the sing le-trip memory, the total-trip
memory is not reset automatically. This per­
mits you to evaluate your driving data for the
enti re pe riod between manual resets.

The effic iency program can help you to use

The trip computer is controlled by two
switches on the windshield wiper lever.

Operating

The trip computer will not operate un less the
ignition is on. When you turn on the ign it ion,
the function that was in use when you last
turned the ignition off will be displayed .
In addition to information about the trip com­
puter (trip computer 1, 2 and the efficiency
program*), information about other systems
can also be shown in the disp lay. To switch the
display between the different information ,
tap the
! RESET I button @briefly.
Resetting values to zero
~ Select a value in the desired tr ip computer
or in the eff iciency program".
~ Press and hold the I RESE T I button @for at
least one second . All values in the selected
trip computer or in the efficiency program*
are reset to zero.
If the data in trip computer
1 are deleted ,
then the values in the efficiency program* w ill
also be reset.
With some vehicle equipment levels, the val­
ues for the single trip or total trip memory
can a lso be reset in the Infotainment system
¢page 25 .
(D Tips
All stored va lues w ill be lost if the vehicle
battery is disconnected.
Basic Settings for the trip computer

setting the trip computer's basic settings.

The values in the single -trip or the total-trip
memory can a ll be reset to zero at the same
time under
Reset in the menu.
I n addition, you can determine what informa­
tion from the trip computer should be shown
in the instrument cluster d isplay. If one of the
p ieces of driver information is turned
Off, that
driver information will not be shown in the
display. The information will continue to be
calculated by the trip computer and can be
turned back
On at any time .
@ Tips
-This function is not available on all
vehicles.
- The dr iving information in the efficiency
program is also reset to zero with the
s ingle-trip memory.
Gearshift Indicator

shift indicator
This indicator can help conserve fuel.

In order to become familiar with the gearshift
indictor, at first just drive the way you are
used to. If the current gear -and the driving
situa tion -is not the best one for conserving
fuel, then the indicator will display the recom­
mended gear. The display shows the current
gear and the gear that is recommended
¢ fig. 12.
- Upshifting The display will light up to the
right of the gear currently se lected if it is
recommending a higher gear.
-Downshifting: The display will light up to
the
left of the gear currently selected if it is
recommend ing a lower gear.
Sometimes the indicator will recommend
skipping a gear (3
> S).
If there is no gearshift recommendation, then
j us t drive in the appropriate gear for conserv­
ing fuel.
(D Note
This indicator can help you conserve fuel.
This indicator is not meant to show you
which gear you should always be in in all
driving situations . Sometimes, in situa­
tions such as passing, driving through
mountains or when towing a trailer, there
won't be any gearshift recommendation.
@ Tips
The display does not light up when the
clutch pedal is being depressed.
Efficiency program

er equipment influencing consumption as well

suitab le gear is engaged or if you sho uld sh ift
up or down.

is displayed.

Other equ ipment that is currently affecting
fuel consump tion is listed in the effi ciency
program. The disp lay shows up to th ree other
items of eq uipment @. The equ ipment using
the most fuel is listed first. If more than three
items using fuel a re switched on, the equip­
ment that is currently using the most fuel is
displayed.
A scale @also shows the c urrent tota l con ­
sumption of all othe r equipment .

Fuel economy messages

F ue l economy messages are disp layed when
fuel consumption is increased by certain con­ ditions. If you follow these fuel economy mes­
sages, you can reduce your vehicle's consump­
tion of fuel. The messages appear automati­
cally and are only displayed in the efficiency program. The fuel economy messages turn
off
automatically after a certain period of time.
~ To turn a fuel economy message off immedi­
ately after it appears, press the lRESET I but­
ton

-Once you have turned a fuel economy

off, it will only appear again af­
ter you turn the ignition on aga in.
- The fuel economy messages are not dis­
played in every instance, but rather in in­
tervals over a period of time.
Service interval display
The service interval display reminds you when
your next service is due.

The schedule for the next o il change or inspec­
tion is ca lculated automatically and displayed
accord ingly. The d isp lay works in two stages:
Service reminder
30 days before the next service is due, a serv­
ice reminder appears in the display when you
turn on the ign ition

After about 5 seconds the display switches
back to normal. The distance and time re­
main ing are updated each time the ignit ion is
turned on until the date due for serv ice is
reached.
Service due
When the due date for service is reached, the message
Service due! appears in the instru­
ment cluster immed iately after you turn on
the ignition. Additional ly, a warning tone
sounds. After about 5 seconds the disp lay
switches back to normal.
Calling up the service schedules
If or when an oil change or inspection is due,
can be shown in the rad io or MMI* display by
selecting the service interval display in the car
menu. Select !CAR I function button
> Service
