yo u hold the lever - even if there are no
l ights turned on. The indicator light

the instrument cluster il luminates when you
use the headlight flasher.
A WARNING
Do not use the high beam or headlight
flasher if you know that these could blind
oncoming traffic.

The interior lighting turns off several seconds
after you close the doors, when you lock the

Cleaning windshield wiper blades
Clean the wind shield wiper bl ades when they
begin to leave streaks . Use a soft cloth and
glass cleaner to clean the windsh ield wiper
b lades.

press the windshield wiper lever when
the wiper arms are folded away from the
w indshield . The windsh ield wipers wou ld
move back into their original position
and could damage the hood a nd wind­
shield .
- To help prevent damage to the w iper sys­
tem, always loosen blades w hich are fro­
zen to the windshield before operating

-To help prevent damage to wiper blades,
do not use gasoline, kerosene, paint
thinner, or other solvents on or near the
wiper blades.
- To help prevent damage to the wiper
arms or other components, do not at­
tempt to move the wipers by hand.
@ Tips
- Commercial hot waxes applied by auto­
matic car washes affect the cleanability
of the windshield .
- You can also use the service position, for
example, if you want to protect the
windshield from icing by using a cover .
- You cannot activate the service position
when the hood is open.
Mirrors
Adjusting the exterior mirrors

Turn the knob to the desired position :
Q/P -In this position, you can adjust the
driver's and front passenger's exterior mirrors
by turning the knob in the desired direction .
4ill-The mirrors are heated depending on the
outside temperature .
8 -The exterior mirrors fold in. In the MMI,
you can select if the mirrors fold in automati­
cally when you lock the vehicle ¢
page 34.
Tilt function for the passenger's mirror
To help you see the curb when backing into a
parking space, the surface of the mirror tilts slightly.
The knob must be in the P position
for this to happen.
You can adjust the tilted mirror surface by
turning the knob in the desired direction.
When you move out of reverse and into anoth­
er gear, the new mirror posit ion is stored and
assigned to the key you are using.
The mirror goes back into its original position
once you drive forward faster than 9 mph (15
km/h) or switch the ignition
off.
.&_ WARNING
--
-Curved (i.e. convex) mirror surfaces in-
crease your field of view. Remember that
vehicles or other objects will appear
smaller and farther away than when seen in a flat mirror. If you use this mirror to
estimate distances of following vehicles
when changing lanes, you could estimate
incorrectly and cause an accident.
(D Note
-If the mirror housing is moved uninten­
tionally (for example, while parking your
vehicle), then you must first fold the mir­
ror electrically. Do not readjust the mir­
ror housing manually. You could damage
the motor which controls the mirror.
- If you wash the vehicle in an automatic
car wash, you must fold the exterior mir­
rors in to reduce the risk of damage to
the mirrors. Never fold power folding ex­
terior mirrors* by hand . Only fold them
in and out using the power controls.

- The exterior mirror settings are stored
with the memory function*¢

-If there is a malfunction in the electrical
system, you can still adjust the exterior
mirrors by pressing the edge of the mir­
ror.

Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the r earmost position.
To avo id contact with the airbag whi le it is de­
p loying, do not sit a ny closer to the inst ru­
ment panel than necessary and always wear
the three-point safety be lt provided adjusted
correctly . We recommend that you adjust the
passenger's seat in the following manner :
• Br ing the backr est up to an (a lmost) upright
position. Do not ride with the seat reclined.
• For adjustable head restraints : adjust the
head restrain t so the upper edge is as even
as possible with the top of your head . If that
is not poss ible, try to adjust the head re­
stra int so that it is as close to th is position
as possible ¢

• Place your feet on the floor in front of the
passenger's seat.

- Be careful when ad justing the seat
height. Check to see t hat no one is in the
way, or serious injury cou ld result!
- Because the seats can be e lectrically ad­
justed with the ignition off, never leave
children unattended in the veh icle. Unsu ­
pervised use of the electric seat adjust­
ments may cause serious injury .
- To reduce the risk of injury in the case of sudden braking or accident, front pas­
sengers must never r ide in a moving ve­
hicle with the bac krest reclined. Safety
be lts and the airbag system on ly offer
maximum protection when the backrest
is upr ight and the safety belts are prop­
erly positioned on the body . The more
the backrest is reclined, the greater the
risk of personal injury from an incorrect
seating position and improperly posi­
tioned safety belts .

Switching the memory function on/off
• Press the IOFFI but ton to swi tch the memory
fu nction on/off . The LED in the button ill u­
m inates when the memory function is
sw itched off . Seating profiles are neither
stored nor recalled.
Storing a seating profile
• Press the ISET I button. When the word SET
lights up, the memory is ready to store set­
tings.
• Press a memory button briefly. A tone con­
firms that the settings were stored.
Accessing a seating profile
• If the driver's door is open and the ignition
is swi tched off, press t he memory b utton.
• If the driver's door is closed or the ignition is
sw itched on, press and ho ld the memory
button until the seat adjustment is com­
plete.
A WARNING
- For safety reasons, the sea t setting
should only be recalled when the veh icle
is stationary - o therw ise y ou risk hav ing
an acc ident.
- I f necessary, you stop th e process by
press ing the
jOFF ! butt on o r any o f the
memory buttons.

ignition is switched on . Incorrect usage
can lead to serious injuries or burns. To re­

To avoid damaging the socket, only use
plugs that fit properly.
- Never connect equipment that generates
electrical current, such as a solar pane l
or battery charger, to the 12-vo lt socket.
This could damage the vehicle's electri­ cal system.
- The 12-vo lt socket should only be used
for a short period of ti me as a power
source for electrical equ ipment. Please
use the electr ical sockets in the vehicle
when con necting equ ipment for longer
periods.
- To avoid damaging the socket, only use
plugs that fit properly.

When the engine is off and accessories are
still plugged in and are on, the vehicle ba t­
tery can still be d rained.

ed or cleared of condensation as quickly as
possib le. The maximum amount of air flows
mainly from the vents be low the windshield.
Recirculation mode switches off. The tempera­
ture should be set to approximately 72 °F (22
°() .
The IAUTOI button switches the defroster off.
IQil REAR I Switching rear window heater
on/off
The rear window heater only operates when
the engine is running.
It switches off auto­
matica lly after a few minutes, depending on
the outside temperature.
To prevent the rear window heater from
switch ing off automatica lly, press and hold
the
!llill REARI button for more than 2 seconds.
This remains stored until the ignition is
sw itched off.
QJ Adjusting seat heating
Pressing the button switches the seat heating
on at the highest setting ( leve l 3) . The LEDs
indicate the temperature level. To reduce the
temperature, press the button again. To
switch the seat heating off, press the button repeatedly until the LE D turns off .
After 10 minutes, the seat heating automati­
cally switches from leve l 3 to level 2.
The seat heating for both outer rear seats * is
adj usted using the buttons in the center con­
sole.

Air vents
You can open or close the center and outer
vents in the cockpit and the vents in the rear
center console using the ridged thumbwheels.
The levers adjust the direction of the airflow
from the vents.
The air temperature in the rear can be adjust­
ed so that it is warmer or co lder by turning
the knob to the red or blue area.
A WARNING
- Do not use the recirc ulation for extended
periods of time. The windows could fog
up since no fresh a ir can enter the vehi­
cle. If the windows fog up, press the air
recirc ulat ion button again immed iately
to switch off the air recirculation func­
tion or select defrost.
- Individuals with reduced sensitivity to
pa in or temperature could develop burns
when using the seat heating function . To
red uce the risk of injury, these individu­
a ls shou ld not use seat heating.
(D Note
To avoid damage to the heating elements
in the seats, do not kneel on the seats or
place heavy loads on a small area of the
seat.

Operation

Press the buttons to turn the functions on or
off. Use the dials to adjust the temperature,
the blower speed and the air distribution. The LED in a button will light up when the func­
tion is switched on. The settings are shown in
the climate control display and are also shown in the MMI display for a few seconds . The driv­
er and front passenger sett ings can be adjust­
ing separately.

IOFFj Switching the climate control
system on/off
The I O FFI button switches the climate control
system on or off .
It also switches on when you
turn the dia l or press any button. Airflow from outside is blocked when the
climate control
system is switched off .
You can activate the residual heat function
whe n the ignition is off by pressing and hold­
ing the ~ button. The residua l heat from the
coolant is used to heat the vehicle interior .
The residual heat function switches off auto­
matically after about 30 minutes.
jA/C j Switching cooling mode on/off
The air is not coo led and humidity is not re­
moved when cooling mode is switched off.
T his can cause fog on the windows. Cooling
mode switches off automatically when the
outside temperature is be low zero .
1- 1 Switching recirculation mode on/off
In recircu lation mode, the air inside the vehi ­
cle is circu lated and filtered. This prevents the
unfiltered air outside the vehicle from enter­
ing the vehicle interior . We recommend
switching recirculation mode on when driving
through a tunnel or when sitting in traffic

The !AUTO I button or l switches recirculation mode off.

There must be at least 10 inc hes (25 cm) be­
tween you r chest and the center of the steer ­
ing whee l.
If you cannot sit more than 10 in­
ches (25 cm) from the steering whee l, see if
adaptive equipment is available to help you reach the pedals and increase the distance
from the steer ing wheel.

In vehicles with the memory f unction* , the
steering column settings are stored together
with the seat position.
A WARNING
Improper use of steering wheel adjust­
ment and improper seating position can
cause se rious personal injury.
- Adjust the steer ing whee l column on ly
when the vehicle is not moving to pre­
vent loss of veh icle control.

- Adjust the driver's seat or steering wheel
so that the re is a min imum of 10 inches
(25 cm) between your chest and the
steering wheel ¢

you can not maintain this min imum dis­
tan ce, the airbag system cannot protect
yo u properly.
- If phys ica l limi tations prevent you from
sitting 10 in ches (25 cm) o r more from
the steering wheel, check with yo ur au­
tho rized Aud i dealer to see if adaptive
equipment is availab le .
- If the steering wheel is aligned with you r
face, the supp lemental drive r's airbag
cannot provide as much protect ion in an
acc ident. A lways make sure that the
steering wheel is aligned with your
chest.
- Always hold the steering wheel with your
hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock posi­
t ions to reduce the risk of pe rsonal injury
if the d river 's airbag deploys.
- Never hold the steering whee l at the 12
o'clock posit ion or w ith your hands i nside the steering wheel rim or on the steering
wheel hub. Hold

to the hands, arms and head if the driv­
er 's airbag deploys.
Easy entry feature
Applies to vehicles: with electrically adjustable steering
wheel
The easy entry feature makes it easier to en­
ter and exit the vehicle by automatically ad­
justing the steering wheel.

steering wheel moves up to the park position

starts the engine.

when starting the engine for diesel vehicles
in colder temperatures. Therefore, you must
hold the brake pedal down until the engine
starts. The indicator lamp

when the engine is preheated.
If the engine should not start immedi ately,
the starting process is automatically stopped
after a short time . Repeat starting procedure.
Start-Stop-System*:
Note the information on c::> page 79, Start­
Stop-System.
A WARNING
- Never allow the engine to run in confined
spaces -danger of asphyxiation .
- Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering
only work when the engine is running.
If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usual­
ly would, this could lead to crashes and
serious injuries.
-Avoid high engine rpm, full throttle and
heavy engine loads until the engine has
reached operating temperature - other­
wise you risk engine damage.
- The engine cannot be started by pushing
or towing the vehicle.
(D Tips
-After a cold engine is started, there may
be a brief period of increased noise be­
cause oil pressure must first build up in
the hydraulic valve adjusters. This is nor­ mal and not a cause for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch off

after a certain period of time. Please
note that electrical equipment such as
exterior lights will switch off as well
when that happens.

Steering lock
The steer ing locks when you turn the engine
off using the
I STAR T ENGINE STOP I button
and open the driver's door. The locked steer­ ing helps prevent vehicle theft.
Emergency off
If necessary, the engine can be switched off
with the selector lever in the R or D/S posi ­
tion. The engine stops if you press the
I START ENGINE STOPI button at speeds below
6 mph (10 km/h).
A WARNING
-Never turn off the engine until the vehi­
cle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering
only work when the engine is running. If
the engine is off, you have to use more
force when steering or braking. Because
you cannot steer and brake as you usual­
ly would, this could lead to crashes and
serious injuries.
- For safety reasons, you should always
park your vehicle with the selector lever
in P. Otherwise, the vehicle could inad­
vertently roll away.
- After the engine has been switched off,
the radiator fan can continue to run for
up to 10 minutes -even with the ignition
switched off.

ture rises as the result of a heat buildup
