Because of the problem of proper disposal of brake fluid as well as
the special tools required and the necessary expertise, we recom ­
mend that you have the brake fluid changed by your authorized Audi

Battery
General information
Your vehicle is equipped with a specia l battery, an AGM battery. This
ba ttery is loca ted in the luggage compar tment and must be
replaced with an original equipment battery. Under normal oper­
ating conditions, the battery is
ma inten anc e-free .
Have the battery checked when you take your vehicle in for service .
You a re well advised to replace a battery that is o lder than 5 years .
Disconn ecting th e batt ery te rmin als
Some vehicle functions (power w indow regulators, for example) are
lost if the battery terminals are disconnected. These functions have
to be relearned after the battery terminals are connected again. To prevent this, the battery should only be disconnected from the
vehic le electrical sys tem when abso lutely necessary for repairs .
Vehi cles not dri ven for lo ng p eriods
If you are going to let your vehic le stand for a long time and n ot
drive it, you should remember there are e lectrica l components
whic h are still functioning and they will draw energy from the
battery and drain it, for example, the engine immobilizer. To prevent
t his, you can eithe r charge the batte ry occasionally to keep it in
good working condition or you can disconnect the negative cable
on the battery.
W int er op erati on
During the winter months, batte ry capacity tends to decrease as
temperatures drop . This is because more power is also consumed
whi le starting, and the headlights, rear window defogger, etc ., are
used more often.
Avoid unnecessary power consumption, particularly in city traffic or
when trave ling o nly short distances . Let your authorized Audi dealer
check the capacity of the vehicle battery before winter sets in
~ page 232. A we ll charged battery will not only preven t starting
problems when the weather is cold, but will also last longer.
Repla cing batter y
The new battery must hav e the same capacity, voltage ( 12 volts),
amperage, construction and p lug sea ling, as the orig inal battery .
Specifications are listed on the battery housing. Batteries specia lly
developed by Aud i fulfill the main tenance, output, and safe ty
requirements. ...,

When instal ling the battery, make sure the ignition and all electrica l
consumers are switched off~

We recommend that you use maintenance -free or c yc le-re sis­
tant/leak -proof
batteries according to the standards TL 825 06 (from
December 1997) and VW 7 50 73 (from August 2001 ) .
Rep lacing the battery should be carried by a qualified workshop .
Please follow the instruct ions on the battery cover.

• All work on the battery requ ires technical knowledge . Please
contact an Audi dealership or another authorized facility for ques ­
t ions about the battery -dange r of acid burns and explosion hazard!
• T he battery must not be opened! Do not try to change the
battery 's liquid level, otherwise detona ting gas will escape from the
battery -explosion hazard I
• The AGM battery in the luggage compartmen t cannot lea k,
because the electrolyte for this battery is absorbed into a special
glass mat. Th is leak -proof battery must not be replace with a
conventional battery .
• Make sure the ventilation hose on the side of the battery is
connected, otherwise fumes or battery acid can leak out.
• Battery holder and term inals a lways have to be secured correctly.

Because of the proble m of proper d isposal of a battery, we recom ­
mend your authorized Audi dealer change the battery for you.
Batteries contain sul furic acid and lead and m ust always be
disposed of properly in compliance with all environmenta l regula ­
t ions. Disposing of vehic le batteries improperly is ve ry dangerous to
the environment . Make sure that the removed battery cannot over­
balance, otherwise su lfur ic ac id might escape!
[ i ] Tip s
If your vehic le is left standing for severa l weeks at extreme ly low
temperatures, the vehicle battery should be removed and stored
where it will not freeze. Th is will prevent it from being damaged and
having to be replaced .•

Remove the cover plate by t urning the thumb wheel.
The positive ( +l battery termina l is protected by a plastic cover. This
cover must be removed to access the posit ive ( +l terminal when
connecting jumper cab les to start the engine.
Always heed the

working on the battery:

cautions when work ing on the battery .

When a battery is charged , it produces hydrogen
gas which is explosive and could cause personal
injury .
Always keep the battery well out of reach of chil­
dren .
& WARNING
Whenever working on the battery or on the electrical system,
there is the risk of injury , accident and even fire. Read and heed the
following
WARNINGS :
• Always wear eye protection. Do not let battery acid or any lead
particles get on your skin or clothing . Shield your eyes . Explosive
gases can cause blindness or other injury.
• Battery acid contains sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid can cause
blindness and severe burns.
-Always wear gloves and eye protection . Do not tilt the
battery because acid could leak out of the ventilation openings .
- If you get battery acid in your eyes or on your skin, immedi­
ately rinse with cold water for several minutes and get medi cal
attention .

- If you should ingest any battery acid , seek medical attention
immed iately.
• Do not expose the battery to an open flame , electric sparks or
an open light.
• Do not smoke.
• Do not interchange the positive and negative cables.
• When working on the battery, be sure not to short -circuit the
terminals with tools or other metal objects. This would cause the
battery to heat up very quickly , which could lead to damage or
explosion and personal injury.
• When a battery is charged , it produces hydrogen gas which is
explosive and could cause personal injury.
• Always keep the battery well out of the reach of children .
• Before work is done on the electrical system, disconnect the
negative ground cable .
• Before performing any work on the electrical system , switch off
the engine and ignit ion as well as any electri cal equipment . The
negative cable on the battery must be disconnected . If you are just
going to replace a light bulb , then it is enough to switch off the
lights.
• Before disconnecting the battery , switch off the anti-theft
alarm system! Otherwise you will set off the alarm.
• When disconnecting the battery, first disconnect the negative
cable and then the positive cable.
• Before reconnecting the battery , make sure all electrical
consumers are switched off. Reconnect the positive cable first and
then the negative cable . Never interchange the cables • this could
start a fire!
• Never charge a frozen or a thawed-out battery . It could
explode! If a battery has frozen , then it must be replaced. A
discharged battery can freeze over at 32 °F (0 °Cl. ..,_

damage electronic components in the electrical system .
• If your vehicle is going to stand for a long period of time without
being driven, protect the battery from "freezing", otherwise it wil l

Checking the battery acid level on magic eye
batteries*
The battery acid level in the battery can be checked
through the clear inspection window.

On top of the battery, there is a round "window". This
window (magic eye) c hanges color as the batte ry charge
and acid leve l change .

Air bubbles in the window can cause an inaccurate reading. Care ­
fully tap on the side of the window.

green , the battery acid level is correct .

no color or is bright yellow , the battery acid
level is too low. Have the battery tested by your authorized Audi
dea ler or a qual ified workshop .
• If the window is
bla ck , then the battery is insufficiently charged.

The acid level of a conventional battery can be checked
visually.

- Check the electrolyte level on the front of the battery. The
level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" mark ings.
If the electrolyte level is below the "MIN" level, have an authorized
workshop fill the battery cell with
distilled water .•
Charging of battery
Starting the engine requires a well charged battery.
Always read and heed all WARNINGS below ~ & and
~ & in "Working on the battery" on page 229.
- Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers. - Make sure the area is well ventilated when you charge
the battery.
- Connect charger cables.
ALWAYS connect charger cables
POSITIVE

- Switch on the charger.
- Make sure the charging rate is not over 6 amps.
- Turn off the charger~&, .
- Disconnect the charger cables.
- Connect both battery cables to the battery if necessary -
first plus, then minus.
It is not ne cessary to remov e th e battery from th e luggage compart ­
ment, and it is also not necessary to disconnect the cables.
Normally, a battery should be charged at no more than 10 percent
of its ra ted capacity.
For example, a charging current of 4.5 amps would be used on a
battery rated at 45 Ah . Rated capac ity of the battery in your vehicle
is listed on the battery housing.
The ba ttery caps should
not be opened when cha rging a battery.
& WARNING
Charging a battery can be dangerous.
• Never charge a frozen battery. It may explode because of gas
trapped in the ice. Allow a frozen battery to thaw out first.
• Do not reuse batteries which were frozen. The battery housing
may have cracked and weakened when the battery froze.
• Charge the battery in a well ventilated area. Keep away from
open flame or electrical spark. Do not smoke. Hydrogen gas gener-
ated by the battery is explosive. ..,

• To reduce the danger of explosio n, never connect or di sconnect

• Fast charging a battery i s dang erou s and should only be
atte mpt ed by a competent techni cian with the proper equipment .
• Battery acid that may spill during charging should be washed
off with a solut ion of w arm wat er and bak ing soda to ne utrali ze
the acid .

Never use a fast charger as a boos ter to start the engine . This wil l
seriously damage sensitive electronic components, such as control
units, re lays, radio, etc ., as well as the battery charger .
[ i ] Tips
The vehicle battery must not be charged with a standard small
charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter or out let .•

Before you c heck anything in the e ngine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS~ & in "Workin g
in t he engi ne compartment" on
page 217.
Lift the fi ller cap to ngue to add washe r fluid . You can fill
t h e container to the top.
Press the cap bac k on to the fi ller neck after fi lling the
container .
You can find the reservoir ca pac ity in the tab le in => page 291.
To prevent lime residue fr om bui lding up on the spray jets, use
dis tilled water when refilling . Always add a g lass cleaner solut ion
(with frost pro tection in the winter).

Do not mix eng ine coolant antifreeze or any other additives to fil l up
the windshield washer reservo ir. •

Bear in mind that the tire pressure mon itor ing syst em * can only
monitor the tire pressures you have stored. The system does not
recogni ze th e load cond ition o f you r vehicle .
T he effec tiveness of the tire pressu re monitoring system * will be
impaired if you store no rmal load pressures bu t then operate the
vehicle at its maximum load=>& . See the

page 238, fig . 148 for the location of the label
on driver's side 8 -pillar (co lor of the actual label and exact location
on the vehic le wi ll vary slightly).
Note that the following tab le is accurate at the time of going to
press and is subject to change . In the event of discrepancies, the t ire
pressure label (on dr iver's side 8 -pillar) always takes precedence .
The table below lists the recommended cold tire i nflation pressures
for the Audi mode l covered by your Owner 's Litera ture at the

• Transmitters with the same frequency , such as radio head­
phones in the vehic le or radio equipment, can cause a temporary
disruption of the system through excessive electromagnetic fields .
• Elimina te the interference if possible/if you can and then
proceed as follows : Turn off the engine for 20 minutes . T hen drive
another
1 0 min. If the warning light comes on aga in, you should
contact your authorized Audi dealer immediately to have the problem corrected .
• Do not use commercially avai lable tire sea lants. Otherwise, the
e lectrical componen ts of the tire pressure monitoring system* wil l
no longer work properly and the sensor for the tire pressure moni­
toring system * will have to be replaced by a qualified workshop .•
Run-flat tires
Ap plies to ve hic les : w it h R un -f la t tires
Introduction
Run-flat tires help keep you moving if a tire goes flat.
Re inforced sidewalls give the tires run -flat capability if t ire pressure
is lost .
We recommend that run -flat tires only be mounted on vehicles that
were origina lly equipped with these special tires at the factory and
have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
Run-flat tire s can be identified by the letter s "RSC" on the tire side ­
wa ll.
If you do change the tires on you r vehicle from normal to run -flat
tires , you must buy the special rims required for run -flat tires, and
the Tire Pressure Mon itoring System must be reprogrammed by an
authorized Audi dea ler or other qual ified workshop.
What do run -fl at tires do ?
These specia l tires have run-flat capabilities that help keep you
moving if a tire loses pressure and goes flat. Under favorab le condi -tions tires can be driven
a
t lea st 30 mile s (50 km ), but you must not
drive
fa ster than 50 mph (80 km/h )=> page 259, "Driving with run ­
flat tires".
The Tire Pressure Monitoring System constant ly checks the air pres ­
sure in the tires. If the run-flat system is active (shown in the center
display), you must inspect the affected t ire or t ires and then decide
whether to cont inue dr iving. Be sure to fol low these tips
=> page 259, "Driving with run -flat tir es" .
When it is n ot po ssible to c ontinue dri ving, ev en with
run-flat tir es?
• I f the Electronic Stabi lization Program (ESP) is not work ing o r
keeps coming on.
• I f the Tire Pressure Monitoring System does not work.
• I f the tire has been severely damaged, in a crash, for example .
T he t read can separate from a damaged tire as the wheel turns , and
hit parts of the vehicle, such as the fuel tank filler neck, fuel lines or
brake lines.
• Do not con tin ue d riving if severe vibra tion occurs or if the tire
starts to smoke because the tire is running hot.
• Do not conti nue drivi ng if da mage to the tire, such as cracks in
the sidewal l, appears .
& WARNING
Improper use of run -fl at tires can cause ve hic le da mage th at can
le ad to los s of vehicle control , a crash and seriou s personal injury .
• Run-flat t ires can only be used w ith spe cial rims .
• Run -fl at tires must always be monitored with a properly
programmed Tire Pre ssure Monitoring Sy stem.
• Alway s inspect a tire that ha s lo st air to make sure it i s safe to
drive with the tire in the run -flat mode .
• Never dr ive with run -fl at tire s th at have been dam aged in a
colli sion.

- Remove the vehicle tool kit.
The onboard tool kit includes:
• Hook for removing wheel covers*
• Plastic clip to remove wheel bolt covers*
• Wheel bolt wrench
• Alignment pin for changing wheels
• Screwdriver with reversible blade
• Replacement bit (reversible Torx bit for changing lamps)
• Open ended wrench 10 x 13
• Towing eye
Note: some of the on board items listed above are provided on
certain models only or are optional extras.
& WARNING
• Using a bumper jack to raise the vehicle will damage the
bumper system. The jack may slip, causing injury .
• Never support your vehicle on cinder blocks, bricks or other
objects. These may not be able to support the load and could
cause injury when they fail.
• Never start or run the engine while the vehicle is supported by
the jack.
• If you must work under the vehicle, always use safety stands
specifically designed for this purpose .
• Never use the hexagonal socket in the handle of the screw­
driver to loosen or tighten the wheel bolts . •

Fuses
Replacing a fuse
A problem in the electrical system may be caused by a
blown fuse.

- Switch off the ignition and the electrical component
affected. - Carefully pry the fuse cover off the instrument panel
using the ignition key or a screwdriver~ fig. 168.
- Check the fuse listing on the next pages to find out which
fuse belongs to the component which has failed
~ page 275, "Fuse Locatio n, Instrume nt Panel left".
- Remove the blown fuse with the plastic clip provided.
The clip is located on the holder in the fuse box.
- Replace a blown fuse (recognizable by the melted metal
strip inside) w ith a fuse of the same amperage .
- Firmly snap the cover back onto the instrument panel
face.

- Switch the ignition and the affected consumer off.
- Unlatch the fuse cover, push the two slides forward
~ fig. 169.
- Find out which fuse belongs to the equipment which
stopped working~ page 277, "Fuse location, left side of
engine compartment".
- Remove the plastic from its reta iner in the fuse box cover
(left face end of the instrument panel), place it on the
fuse in question and pull it out.
- If the fuse is burned out (recognizable by melted strips of
metal), replace it with a new fuse of the same rating.
- Replace the fuse cover.
- Push the two slides to the rear~ fig. 169. Install the fuse
cover carefully to prevent water from entering.
