Driver information system
Parking brake set
The parking brake warning light Brake /((D) (Canada models) illumi
nates when the parking brake is set. In addition , a warning tone will
sound after you have driven for longer than 3 seconds and faster
than 3 mph (5 km/h).
L1}. WARNING
• Always observe the warnings in => page 209, "Engine compart
ment", before opening the engine hood and checking the brake
fluid.
• Driving with low brake fluid is a safety hazard! Stop the car and
get professional assistance.
• If the brake system warning/indicator light illuminates
together with the ABS warning/indicator light, then the ABS system is malfunctioning. The rear wheels could quickly lock up
when you apply the brakes. This could lead to loss of control and
your vehicle could slide! Drive carefully to the nearest authorized
Audi dealer and have the malfunction corrected. •
Engine cooling system malfunction ¾
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must be
repaired as soon as possible.
When the _t symbol in the display flashes, then either the
engine coolant
temperature is too high, or the coolant level
is too low. In addition to the symbol, the following message
also appears in the display:
Switch off engine and check coolant level
-Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
- Turn off the engine.
- Check coolant level
~ page 225.
-Add coolant if necessary ~ page 225.
-Continue driving only after the engine coolant
warning/indicator light goes out.
- Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assistance if
necessary .
If t he engine coolant lev el is correct, then th e radia tor fan may be
the cause of the malfunction.
If the gene rator warning/indicator light should also illuminate
=> page 18, then the fan belt may be damaged.
L1}. WARNING
• If your vehicle should break down for mechanical or other
reasons, park at a safe distance from moving traffic, turn off the
engine and turn on the hazard warning lights
=> page 57, "Emer
gency flasher A" .
• Never open the hood if you see or hear steam or coolant
escaping from the engine compartment -you risk being scalded.
Wait until you can no longer see or hear steam or coolant escaping.
• The engine compartment of any vehicle is a dangerous area.
Before you perform any work in the engine compartment, turn off
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the warning stickers
=> page 209, "Engine compartment" .

Do not continue driving if the-~- symbol illuminates. There is a
malfunction in the engine cooling system -you could damage your
engine .•

Controls
The air conditioning automatically maintains the selected
temperature in the vehicleinterior throughout each
se ason.

We recommend the following setting:
- Rotate the knob~ fig. 76@ to the right to switch on the
ai r conditioning.
- Set the temperature to 72 °F (22 °C).
- Press the !AUTO

Using the previously recommended setting is the quickest way to
achieve a comfortable climate in the vehicle. This setting should
therefore only be changed when personal comfort levels or certa in
circumstances require it.
The climate controls are a combination of automatic heating and
ventilation systems and a cooling system which dehumidifies and cools the air inside the vehic le .
The climate controls automatically maintain a temperature once it has been set. The temperature of the air from the vents, fan speed
(air volume) and air dist ribu tion are a lso automatically adjus ted . The
system also takes into account strong sunshine so that manual
adjus tment is not necessary. So in almost all cases,
a ut omatic mode
offers the best conditions for the comfort of the occupants at all
times of the year~

Ple ase not e:
In cooling mode, relative humidity in the interior is reduced. This
prevents the windows from fogging up .
When relative humidity and temperatures outside are high,

can drip from the air conditioning evaporator and form a pool
of water under the vehicle . This is normal and not an indication of a
leak!
When outside temperatures are low, the fan does no t switch to a
higher speed until the coolant has reached an adequate tempera
ture, with the exception of t he defrost setting .
When accelerating at wide-open throttle, the air conditioning compressor is temporarily switched off to maintain fu ll engine
power.
In order to ensure engine cooling under extreme engine loads, the
compressor is switched off if coolant temperatures climb too high ...

Functions are set by turning the rotary knob or switched on and off

The pollutant filter (particle filter) ensures that contaminants in the
outside air (such as dus t or p ollen) are greatly reduced or stopped.
The air is also filtered in recirculation mode.
T he pollutan t fil te r element must be changed accord ing to the inter
vals specified in the maintenance schedule so that the air condi
tioning system's performance is not adversely affected.
If the filter's effectiveness is weakened by driv ing t he vehic le in
areas with heavi ly polluted outside air, the filter element should also
be changed in between the listed services .
& WARNING
For safety re ason s, it is impo rtant that all window s are free of i ce ,
snow, and condensat ion . Onl y then is good visibility ensured .
Plea se familiari ze your self with the correct operation of the air
conditioning and how to dehumidify /defrost the windows .

• If you suspect that the climate controls have been damaged,
switch the system off to avoid damag ing it, and have it inspected by
an author ized Audi dealer.
• Audi climate control system repairs require special expertise and
t he proper tools. You shou ld contact an authorized Audi dealer in
the event o f malfunctions.
[ i ] Tips
• To avo id adverse ly affecting heating and cooling performance
and to prevent condensation on the windows, the air intake in front
of the windsh ield must be free of ice, snow, and leaves.
• The air coming from the vents and circulating through the entire
inter ior is extracted through the outlet slots in the side panels in the
luggage compartment. Make sure that the outlet slots are not
covered by clo th ing, etc.
• Climate control works most effectively if the windows are closed .
H owever, if the interior of a parked vehicle is extremely hot from the
sun's rays, briefly opening the windows can speed up the cooling
process. •

The windshield and si de w indows are defroste d or cleared
of condensation as q uickly as possible.

Turning on automati c operation
- Set the temperature you want.
- Press the
(AUTO ] button=> page 85, fig. 76.
Automatic operation ensures constant temperatures in the interior
and dehumidifies the air inside the vehic le. Air temperature,
vo lume, and distribution are controlled automatically to reach or
mainta in the desired interior temperature as quick ly as possible.
Fluctuations in exterior temperature and the effects of temperature
from the position of the sun are compensated for au tomatical ly . •
Manual air recirculation mode l~I
The recir culation mode prevents polluted outside air from
entering the vehicle in teri or.

In recirculation mode, air is drawn from the vehicle interior, filtered,
and recirculated . We recommend that you select recircu lation mode
briefly=> & under the follow ing conditions :
When driving through a tunne l or in a traffic jam so that exhaust
fumes and odors cannot enter the vehic le interior .

A/C operation [A C)
Switching on A /C
- Press the (AC) button~ page 85, fig. 76 .
Switching A /C off
- Press the (AC) button again.
T he cooling system is switched on during A/C operation -the
heating and ventilation system is controlled auto matica lly.
[ i J Tips
I f the LED in the switch stays on after A/C operation has been
switched off( = switching the A/C off), there is a fau lt in an air condi
tioning component. P lease consult an authorized Audi dealer when
there is an operat ing prob lem. •
Using the climate controls economically
E conomical use of the climate c ontrols helps to save fuel.
When climate control is working in cooling mode, engine
performance is reduced and fuel consumption is affected.
To keep the t ime the air cond itioning is on as s hort as
poss ible, you s hould do the following:

- If you open the windows while driving, switch the air
conditioning off .
- If the veh icle is extremely hot due to the heat of the sun,
briefly open doors and windows.

When you save fuel, you reduce emissions from the vehicle. •
Rear window defogger [ffiJ
The rear window defogger clears the rear window of
condensati on.
- Press the QuJ bu tton~ page 85, fig. 76 to turn the rear
window defogger on and off.
The rear window defogger works on ly when the engine is running.
The indicator light in the button illuminates when the rear window defogger is turned on.
The rear window defogger is switched off automatica lly after 10 to
20 minutes, depending on the outside temperature .
At very low outside temperatures, the rear window defogger can be switched on continuously by pushing the
Qiil button for more than 2
seconds. This remains stored until the ignition is switched off. A
rear window defogger that was switched on also remains stored for
15 minutes after the ignition is switched off.
If the engine is restarted within these 15 minutes, the rear window
defogger is activated for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on outside
temperature . With a vehicle that is parked for a short time, the rear
window defogger does not need to be manually activated again. .,,_

Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an adequate
am ount of oil to lubricate and c ool all of its moving parts.
In order to provide effective lubrication and cooling of internal
engine components, all internal combustion engines consume a
certain amount of oil. Oil consumption varies from engine to engine
and may change sign ificantly over the life of the engine . Typically,
engines with a specified break-in period (see~
page 190) consume
more oil during the break-in period than they co nsume after o il
consumption has stabilized .
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on
the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM (revo lutions per minute)
at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature and road
conditions. Further factors are the amount of oil dilution from water
condensation or fue l residue and the oxidation level of the oil. As
any engine is subject to wear as mileage bu ilds up, the oil consump
tion may increase over time until rep lacement of worn components
may become necessary .
With all these variables coming into play, no standa rd rate of oil
consumption can be estab lished or specified. There is no a lternative
t o regula r and frequent checking of the oil level, see Note.
I f the yellow engine oil level warning symbol in the instrument
cluster _ lights up, y ou should check t he oi l level as soon as
possible
with the oil dipstick~ page 221. Top off the oil at your
earl iest co nvenience ~

to the engine.
[ i ] Tip s
• The oil pressure w arning display ce,. is not an indi cator of the oil
level . Do not rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in your engine at
regular interv als , prefe rably ea ch time you refuel , and always before
going on a long trip.
• I f you have the impression your engine consumes excessive
amoun ts of oi l, we recommend tha t you consult your Audi dealer to
have the cause of your concern properly diagnosed . Keep in mind
that the accurate measureme nt of oil consumption requires great
care and may take some time. Your Audi dealer has instructions
about how t o measure oil consumption accurately. •

soap and water .

Never mix oil additives with your engine oil. These additives can
damage your engine and adversely affect you r Audi Limited New
Vehicle Warranty.
<£> For the sake of the environment
• Before changing your oil, first make sure you know where you
can proper ly dispose of t he used oil.
• Always dispose of used engine oil properly . Do not dump it on
garden soil, wooded areas, into open strea ms or down sewage
drains .
• Recycle used eng ine oi l by taking it to a used eng ine oi l collec
tion facility in your area, or contact a service station. •
Engine cooling system
Coolant
The e ngine coolant perfor ms tw o functions: i t kee ps the
en gine from overheatin g and i t pro tects the engi ne from
freezing in the winter.
The cooling system is sea led and general ly requires litt le attention.
The coo ling sys tem has been f illed at the factory with a permanen t
coo lant which does not need to be changed. The coolant consists of
a mixture of water and the ma nufacturer 's glyc ol- basedco olan t
additive
G12++ antifreeze w ith anti corrosion additives (50% for USA models; 60% for Canadian mode
ls) . T his mixture both assures the
n ecessary fros t pr otection a nd protects metal co mpo nents in the
engine's cooling system from corrosion and scaling. It also raises
t he boil ing point of the coolant .
Do not reduce the concentration of the coo lant in the su mmer by
adding plain water.
The proportion of coolant additive mu st be at
lea st 50 % but not more than 60 %
to maintai n antifreeze pro tection
and cooling efficiency. If the coolant frost protection is too low, the
coo la nt co uld free ze and damage the vehic le heating and engine
coo ling system .
For year-round driving, antifree ze is added at the factory for temper
atures down to:
• - 31 °F ( -35 °C) USA
• -40 °F ( -40 °C) Canada.
You can mix the
G 12+ + coolant additive with other additives (G12+
or G12). Always check w ith your authorized Audi dealer.

• Before winter sets in, have the coolant checked to see if the
coo lant additive in your vehicle is suff icient to meet the c limate
co nd itions . This is e special ly impor tant i f you live in a region where
the winter is extremely cold. If necessary, increase the proportion of coo lant additive t o 60%.
• When adding coolant additive to your cooling system,
r emem ber:
- We recommend using on ly coolant additive
G 12+ + (check the
l abel) for your veh ic le . Th is coolant additive is available at autho -
rized Audi dealers. Other types of antifreeze can significantly ._

reduce corrosion protection. The resu lting corrosion can cause a
loss of coolant and serious engine damage.
• Do not add any type of radiator leak sealant to your vehicle's
engine coolant. Adding radiator repair fluid may adverse ly affect the
function and performance of your cooling system and cou ld result
in damage not covered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty. •
Checking the engine coolant level
The engine coolant level can be checked with a quick
gla nce .

Before you check anything in the engine compartment,

- Switch the ignition of f.
- Read the coo lant l eve l at the coo lant exp ansio n tank
==> fig. 142. With a col d e ngine, it must b e above the
"min" mar k. Wit h a hot engine, it can be a little above t he
indicated range.
The location of the coolant expansion tank can be seen in the
engine compartment i llustration. To obtain an accurate reading, the engine must be switched off.
The expansion tank in your vehic
le is equipped with an e lectric
coolant level sensor.
When the coolant leve l is too low, the warning light in the Auto
Check System =>
page 34 will blink un til you add coolant and the
level has been restored to normal. Even though there is an e lectric
coo la n t level sensor, we still recommend you check the coolant level
from time to time .
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling system . In the event
of coo lant loss, the co oling sys tem shou ld be i nspected immedi
ate ly by your authorized Audi dealer . It is not enough merely to add
coo lant .
In a
sealed system , losses can occur only if the boiling point of the
coolant is exceeded as a result of overheating .
0 Note
Do not add any type of radiator leak sea lant to your vehicle's engine
coolant. Adding rad iator repair fluid may adversely affect the func
tion and performance of your coo ling system and could resu lt in
damage not covered by your New Vehic le Limited Warra nty. •
Adding coo lant
Be very careful when adding engine coolant.
Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS==> & in "Working in
the engine compartment" on
page 217 .
-Turn off the engin e.
- Let the engine cool down.

- Twist the cap on again
tightly .
Replacement engine coolant must conform to exact specifications
=>
page 224, "C oolant" . Even in an emerge ncy, if coo lant add it ive
G 12+ +, G 12+ or G12 is not availab le, do
not use a different additive.
Use p lain water instead until you ca n get the c orrec t addit ive and
can restore the correct ratio. This should be done as soon as possible.
If you have lost a considerable amount o f coo lant, then you should
add co ld antifreeze and cold water only when the engine is cold.
A lways use
new e ngine c oolan t when refil ling .
Do not fill coolant above the "MAX" mark. Excess coolant will be
forced ou t through the pressure relief va lve in the cap when the
engine becomes hot.
& WARNING
• The cooling sy stem is under pre ssure and can get very hot .
Reduce the risk of scalding from hot coolant by following these
s teps.
- Turn off the engine and allo w it to cool down .
- Protect your face, hands and arms from esc aping fluid and
steam by covering the cap with a large , thick rag .
- Turn the cap slo wly and very carefully in a counter -clockwise
dire ction while applying light , downward pressure on the top
of the cap .
- To avoid being burned, do not spill antifreeze or coolant on
the e xhaust system or hot engine parts . Under certain condi
tions, the ethylene glycol in engine coolant can catch fire .

• Antifreeze is poi sonous. Always store antifreeze in its original
container and well out of the re ach of children .
• If you drain the coolant , it must be caught and safely stored in
a proper container clearly marked "poison ".

• Coo lant po llutes the environment and could cause an engine
fire. Excess coolant will be forced out through the pressure re lief
va lve in the cap when the engine becomes hot.
• If , in an eme rgency, o nly wa te r can be added, the correct rat io
between water and antifreeze=>

as possib le .

Drained coolant should not be reused. Always dispose of used
coo lant whi le observ ing all environmen tal regulat io n s. •
Radiator fan
The radi ator f an s witches on au tomati cally by itself.
T he e lectric radiator fan is control led bythe rmoswitches that switch
on and off depending on coolant and engine compartment temper
atures.
An auxiliary electric radiator fan* switches on and off depending on
coo la nt tempe rature a nd other veh ic le operati on cond itio ns.
After you switch the engine off, the aux iliary fan can continue
running for up to 10 m inutes -even with the ignition off. It can even
sw itch o n again later by itself=> & , if
• the temperature of the engine coo lant rises due to the heat
b ui ld-up fro m the eng ine in the eng ine co m partment, or
