safety in traffic. Only use the functions in
such a way that yo u always maintain com­

- Do not use the voice recognition system in
emergencies beca use your voice may change
in stressful s ituations. It may take longer to
dia l the number or the system may not be
ab le to dial it at all. Dial the emergency
number manually .

-The d ialog pauses when there is an incom­
ing phone call and will continue if you ig­
nore the call. The dia log ends if you answer
the ca ll.
- There are no navigation prompts* when a di­ alog is act ive .

CD Note
Only use one-piece SD cards. If adapter cards
(SD cards with more than one piece) are used ,
the card could fall out of the adapter when
driving because of vibrations . Individual
pieces could then become stuck in the drive
and impair the functionality.

protect it from dirt, dust particles and other
damage.

the steering wheel the wrong way can cause
serious injuries to the hands, arms and head if the driver's airbag inflates
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your
face decreases the ability of the supplemen ­
tal driver's airbag to protect you in a colli­
sion.
- Always sit in an upright position and never lean against or place any part of your body
too close to the area where the airbags are
located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front seats
properly and make sure that all passengers
are properly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle is
moving. Your seat may move unexpectedly
and you could lose control of the vehicle.
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests are
tilted back, the greater the risk of injury due
to incorrect positioning of the safety belt
and improper seating position.
- Children must always ride in child seats

Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger sea ting posi tion is
important for safe, relaxed driving .
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of in­
jury in the event of an accident, we recommend
that you adjust the seat for the front passenger
to the following position:
• Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is in
an upright position and your back comes in full
contact with it whenever the vehicle is moving .
• Keep both feet flat on the floor in front of the
front passenger seat .
• Fasten and wear safety belts correctly
¢ page 192.

Safe driving
A WARNING
Front seat passengers who are unbelted, out
of position or too close to the airbag can be
seriously injured or killed by the airbag as it unfolds . To help reduce the risk of serious
personal injury:
- Passengers must always sit in an upright po­
sition and never lean against or place any
part of their body too close to the area
where the airbags are located.
- Passengers who are unbelted, out of posi­
tion or too close to the airbag can be seri­
ously injured by an airbag as it unfolds with
great force in the blink of an eye .
- Always make sure that there are at least
10 in (25 cm) between the front passen­
ger's breastbone and the instrument panel.
- Always make sure that there are at least 4 in
(10 cm) between the front passenger's
knees and the lower part of the instrument
panel.
- Each passenger must always sit on a seat of
their own and properly fasten and wear the
safety belt belonging to that seat .
- Before driving, always adjust the front pas­
senger seat proper ly.
- Always keep your feet on the floor in front
of the seat. Never rest them on the seat, in­
strument panel, out of the window, etc. The
airbag system and safety belt will not be
able to protect you properly and can even in­
crease the risk of injury in a crash.
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests are
tilted back, the greater the risk of injury due
to incorrect positioning of the safety be lt
and improper seating position.

A WARNING ,~
Pedals that cannot move freely can cause loss
of vehicle control and increase the risk of seri ­
ous injury .
- Never place any objects in the driver's foot­
well. An object could get into the pedal area
and interfere w ith pedal function . In case of
sudden braking or an accident, you would
not be able to brake or accelerate!
- Always make sure that nothing can fall o r
move into the dr iver's footwe ll.
Floor mats on the driver side
Always use floor mats that can be securely at ­
tached to the floor mat fasteners and do not in­
terfere with the free movement of the pedals .
.,. Make sure that the floor mats are properly se ­
cured and cannot move and interfe re with the
peda ls ¢ ,&. .
Use o nly floor mats that leave the pedal area un­
obstructed and that are firmly secured so that
they cannot slip out of pos it ion . You can obtain
suitable floo r mats from yo ur au tho riz ed A ud i
Dea le r.
Floor mat fasteners are installed in your Audi.
F loor mats used in your vehicle must be attached
to these fasteners. Properly securing the floor mats w ill prevent them from sliding into posi­
tions that could interfere with the pedals or im ­
pa ir safe operation of your veh icle in other ways .
A WARNING
Pedals that cannot move free ly can resul t in a
loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of
ser ious personal in jury.
- Always ma ke sure tha t floor mats are p rop­
erly se cured.
- Never place o r insta ll floo r mats or other
floo r coverings in the ve hicle tha t cannot be
properly se cured in place to prevent them
from slipp ing and interfering with the ped ­
als or the ability to control the vehicle .
- Never place or inst all floo r ma ts or o ther
floo r coverings on top of a lready installed
Safe d riv ing
floor mats. Additional floor mats and other
cover ings will reduce the size of the pedal
area and interfere with the pedals.
- Always properly re insta ll and secure floor
mats that have been taken out for clean ing .
- Always make sure that objects cannot fall
into the driver footwell whi le the vehicle is
mov ing . Objects can become trapped under
the brake pedal and accelerator pedal caus­ i n g a loss of vehicle control.
Stowing luggage
Loading the luggage compartment
All luggage and other objects must be properly
stowed and secured in the luggage compart ­
ment .
Loose items in the luggage compa rtme nt can
shift suddenly , changing veh icle hand lin g charac­
te ris tics. Loose i tems can a lso incre ase the risk of
serious persona l injury in a sudden veh icle ma ­
neuver or in a collision.
.. Distribute the load evenly in the luggage com­
par tment .
.. Always p lace and properly sec ure heavy items in
the l uggage compartment as far forward as
possible .

A WARNING ~
Improperly stored luggage or o ther items can
f ly through the veh icle ca using se rious per­
sona l injury i n the event of ha rd bra king or an
a ccident. To help reduce the risk of serio us
p ersonal injury:
- Always put objects, for example, l uggage or
o ther heavy items in the l uggage compart­
ment .
- Always secure objects in the luggage com­
pa rtment us ing the tie-down eyelets and
suitable st raps.

• Insert the tongue into the correct buckle of
your seat until you hear it latch secure ly

•Pullon the belt to make sure that it is securely
latched in the buckle.
A WARNING
Improperly positioned safety belts can cause
ser ious personal injury in an c1ccident.
- Expectant mothers must always wear the
lap portion of the safety belt as low as pos­
sible across the pelvis and below the round­ ing of the abdomen .
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS and
othe r important information

Unfastening safety belts
Unbuckle the safety belt with the red release
button only after the vehicle has stopped.

A WARNING
Never unfasten safety belt while the vehicle is
moving. Doing so will increase your risk of be­
ing injured o r kil led.

Improperly worn safety belts
Incorrectly positioned safety belts can cause se­
vere injuries.
Wearing safety belts improperly can cause seri­
ous injury or death. Safety belts can only work
when they are correctly posit ioned on the body .
Improper seating positions reduce the effective­ ness of safety bel ts and w ill even increase the
risk of inju ry and death by moving the safety be lt
to criti cal areas of the body . Imprope r seating
positions also increase the risk of serious injury
and death when an airbag dep loys and strikes an
occupant who is not in the correct seating posi­
tion. A driver is responsible for the safety of all
vehicle occupants and especially for children.
Therefore:
• Never pe rm it anyone to assume an incor rect
seated position in the vehicle while traveling

A WARNING
Improperly worn safety belts increase the risk

a veh icle is being used .
- Always make sure that all veh icle occupants
are correctly restrained and stay in a correct

Safety belt tensioner
How safety belt pretensioners work
In front, side and rear -end collisions above a
particular severity and in a rollover, safety belts ore tensioned automatically.
Pyrotechnic safety belt pretensioners
The safety belts are eq uipped w ith safety belt
prete nsione rs. The system is ac tiva ted by sensors
i n front, side and rear-end collisions of great se ­
verity and in a rollover . This tightens the belt and
takes up belt slack¢.&.

Airbag syste m
-Repairs to the front passenger seat must be
performed by qua lified and properly trained
workshop personnel.
- Never remove the front passenger or driver
seat from the vehicle.
- Never remove the upholstery from the front
passenger seat.
- Never disassemble or remove parts from the
seat or disconnect wires from it.
- Never carry sharp objects in your pockets or
put them on the seat . The capacitive pas­
senger detection mat in the front passenger
seat will not function properly if it is punc­
tured.
- Never carry things on your lap or carry ob­
jects on the front passenger seat. Such ob­
jects can influence the capac itance regis­
tered by the capac itive passenger detection
system, so that incorrect information is pro­
vided to the airbag control unit.
- Never store items under the front passenger
seat. Parts of the Advanced Airbag System
under the passenger sea t could be dam­
aged, preven ting them and the airbag sys­
tem from working properly.
- Never place seat covers o r rep lacemen t up ­
holstery that have not been spec ifically ap­
proved by Audi on the front seats.
- Seat covers can prevent the Advanced Air­
bag System from recogn izing child re­
straints or occupants on the front passenge r
seat and prevent the side airbag in the seat
backrest from dep loying proper ly.
- If a seat heater has been retrofitted or oth­
erwise added to the front passenger seat,
never install any ch ild restraint system on
this seat.
- Never use cush ions, pillows, blankets, or
similar items on the front passenger seat.
The add itiona l layers prevent the capacitive
passenge r detection system from accurate ly
measuring the capac itance of the ch ild safe­
ty seat and/or the pe rson on the seat and
t hu s keep the Advanced Airbag System from
wor king p roperly.
- Never place o r use any electrical device
(s uch as a laptop, CD player, elec tronic
games dev ice, power inverte r or seat he ater

for child seats) on the front passenger seat
if the device is connected to the 12-volt
socket or the cigarette lighter socket. Such
dev ices can influence the capac itance regis­
tered by the capacitive passenger detection
system, so that incorrect informat ion is pro­
vided to the airbag cont ro l unit.
- If you must use a child restra int on the front
passenger seat and the child restra int man­
ufacturer's instructions requ ire t he use of a
towel, foam c ushion or someth ing else to
proper ly posit ion the child restra int, make
certa in that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
,; ; light comes on and stays on whenever
the child restraint is insta lled on the front
passenger seat.
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF,;, light
does not come on and stay on, have the air­ bag system inspected by your Audi dealer.
A WARNING
If the front passenger seat gets wet, dry it im­mediately .
- If liq uid soaks into the front passenger seat,
this can keep the airbag system from work­
ing proper ly and may, for instance, deacti­
vate the passenger frontal airbag. If this
happens, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF,;,
light will come on and stay on together w ith
t he airbag indica to r li gh t
min the instru­
ment cluster.
'
- I f liq uid is pooled on the seat, but has not
soaked in, th is may also keep the airbag sys­
tem from working p roperly and cause the
passenger fronta l airbag to be enabled
(turned on), even though there is a properly
installed child restraint system on the seat.
Wet towels or other wet things on the seat
cushion can have the same effect. If the
front passenger frontal airbag is turned o n,
the
PASSENGER AIR B AG OFF ,;, light light
w ill go out.
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
The front Advanced Airbag System and the side
airbags supp lement the protection offered by the .,,.

met, be sure to check the light regularly to make
certain that the
P A SSENGER AIR BAG OFF '-1;
light stays on continuously whenever the ignition
is on. If the
PAS SENGER AIR BAG OFF '-1; light
does not appear on and does not stay on all the
time, stop as soon as it is safe to do so and
- reactivate the system by turning the ign ition
off for more than 4 seconds and then turning it
on again;
- remove and reinstall the child restraint. Make sure that the child restraint is properly instal­led and that the safety belt for the front pas­
senger seat has been correctly routed through
the child restraint as descr ibed in the child re­
straint manufacturer's i nstructions;
- make sure that the convertible locki ng retrac­
tor on the safety be lt for the front passenger
seat has bee n activated and that the safety belt
has been pulled tight.
- make sure that no electrical device (such as a
laptop, CD player, electronic games device,
power inverter or seat hea ter for child seats) is
placed or used on the front passenger seat if
the device is connected to the 12•volt socket or
the cigarette lighter socket;
- make sure that no seat heater has been retro ­
fitted or otherwise added to the front passen­
ger seat;
- make sure that nothing can interfere with the
safety belt buckles and that they are not ob­
structed;
- make sure that there are no wet objects (such
as a wet towel) and no water or other liquids on
the front passenger seat cush ion.
If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light st ill
doe s not come on ...
If the PAS SENGER AIR BA G OFF '-1; light sti ll
does not come on and does not stay on continu­
ously (when the ignition is sw itched on),
- take the child restraint off t he front passenger
seat and have the airbag system inspected by
your Audi dealer immed iate ly.
Th e PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light
should NOT come on ...
The PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~ ; light should
NOT come on when the ign ition is on and an
Airb ag sys tem
adult is sitting in a proper seating pos ition on the
front passenger seat. If the
PASSENGER AIR
BAG OFF~;
light comes on and stays on whi le
driv ing, under these c ircumstances, make sure
that:
- the adult on the front passenger seat is proper­
ly seated on the center of the seat cushion w ith
his or her back up against the backrest and the backrest is not reclined,
- the adult is not taking we ight off the seat by
holding on to the passenger assist handle
above the front passenger door or support ing
their weight on the armrest,
- the safety belt is being properly worn and that
there is not a lot of slack in the safety belt web­
b ing ,
- there are no aftermarket seat covers or cush­
ions or other things (such as blankets) on the
front passenger seat that might cause the ca­ pacitive passenge r detection system to miscal­
culate e lectr ica l capaci ta nce.
' Important safety instructions on
monitoring the Advanced Airbag System
A WARNING
--- If the stat us of the Advanced Airbag System
has changed while the vehicle is moving, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF '-1; ON @ light
blin ks for about 5 seconds to cat ch the driv­
er 's attent ion . If this happens, a lways stop
as soon as it is sa fe to do so and check the
steps described above .
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF~; light
does not go off when an adult who is not
very small is sitting on the front passenger
seat after tak ing the steps described above,
have the airbag system inspected by your
author ized Audi dealer before t ransporting
anyone on the front passenger seat .
A WARNING ....._
An airbag system that is not functioning prop­
e rly cannot prov ide supplemental protect io n
i n a fronta l crash.

A WARNING
-Forward-fac ing ch ild seats installed on the
front passenge r seat may inte rfere with the
deployment of the a irbag and cause serious
persona l injury to the child .
- If except ional circumstances require the use
of a forward-facing child restraint on the
front passenger's seat , the child's safety
and well-being require the following special
precautions to be taken:
- Always make sure that the forward -facing
seat has been designed and cert ified by its
manufacture r fo r use on a front passenger
seat with a front and s ide a irbag.
- Always carefully follow the manufacturer's
instructions provided with the child seat
or i nfant car rier.
- Never p ut the fo rward-facing child re­
stra int up against o r very near the instru­
men t panel.
- Always move the front passenger seat to
the highest posit ion in the up and down
ad justment range and move it back to the
rearmost position in the seat's fore and
aft adjustment range, as far away from
the airbag as possible, before installing
the forward-facing ch ild restraint.
- Always make sure that the safety be lt up­
per anchorage is behind the child restra int
and not next to or in front of the child re­
stra int so that the safety belt will be prop­
erly positioned .
- Always make sure that nothing prevents
the front passenger's seat from be ing
moved to the rearmost posit ion in its fore
and aft adjustment range .
- Never place objects on the seat (such as a
laptop, CD p laye r, electronic games de­
vice, powe r inverter or seat heater for
child seats). These may influence the elec-

trical capacitance measu red by the capaci­
tive passenger detection system and can
also fly around in an accident and cause
serious personal injury.
- Never place or use any electrical device
(such as a laptop, CD player, electronic
games device, powe r inverter or seat heat ­
er for child seats) on the front passe nger
seat if the device is connected to the 12-
vo lt socket or the cigarette lighter soc ket.
- If a seat heate r has been retrofitted or
othe rw ise added to t he front passenger
seat, neve r insta ll any child res traint sys­
tem on this seat.
- Make su re that there a re no wet objects
(s uch as a we t towe l) and no w ater or ot h­
er liquids on the front passenger seat
cushion .
- Always m ake sure tha t the
PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF,;;
light comes on and stays
on all the time whenever the ignition is
switched on .
- Never install a forward -facing chi ld safety
seat on the front passenger seat if the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF ~ ; light does
not turn on and stay on. Have the system
inspected immediately by an author ized
Audi dealer or authorized A udi Service Fa ­
c ility .
- Always buckle the child seat firmly in
place even if a child is not s itting in it . A
loose child seat can fly aro und during a
sudden stop or in a collision.
- Always read a nd heed all WARNINGS
