There is a malfunction in the alternator or the ve ­
h icle elect rical system.

necessa ry e lectr ica l equi pment because it w ill
drain the batte ry. See your authorized A udi deal­
er or authori zed Audi Service Facility if the bat­
tery charge level is too low .

tery w ill be charged while driving

There is a malfunction in the eng ine o r in the fue l
supp ly sys tem .
Mo re force is needed to steer and bra ke the mov­
in g vehicle when t he engine is stopped. If the ve­
hi cle is roll ing , try to b ring it to a stop off to the
side from moving traffic. See an au thoriz e d Au di
dea le r or autho riz e d Au di Serv ice Fa cility fo r as­
sis tance.
A WARNING
If the eng ine stops while dr iving , yo u will
nee d to use more fo rce to bra ke the vehicle .
Th is increases the r isk o f an acci dent . There

Driving
-Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering only
work when the engine is running. If the en­
gine is
off, you have to use more force when
steering or braking. Because you cannot
steer and brake as you usually would, this
could lead to accidents and serious injuries.
(D Note
Avoid high engine speed, full throttle, and
heavy engine load if the engine has not
reached operating temperature yet. You could
damage the engine.
@ For the sake of the environment
Do not let the engine run while parked to
warm up. Begin driving immediately . This re­
duces unnecessary emissions.
{D) Tips
-Some noise after starting the engine is nor­
mal and is no cause for concern.
- If you leave the vehicle with the ignition
switched on, the ignition will switch
off af­
ter a certain amount of time . Make sure that
electrical equipment such as the exterior
lights are switched
off.
Stopping the engine

Emergency off function*
If it is absolutely necessary, the engine can also
be turned
off while driving at speeds starting at
4 mph (7 km/h). To switch the engine
off, press
the
! START ENGINE STOPI button twice in a row
briefly or press and hold for longer than two sec­
onds.
_&. WARNING
- Never turn off the engine before the vehicle
has come to a complete stop.

- Please note that the brake booster and pow­

cause the usual steering and braking capa­
bility is not available, the risk of accidents or
. . . . mJunes increases.
- For safety reasons, always park the vehicle
with the selector lever in the P position.
Otherwise, there is the risk that the vehicle
could roll.
- After the engine has been switched off, the
radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10
minutes -even with the ignition switched
off. It can also switch on again after some
time if the coolant temperature rises as the
result of heat buildup or if the engine is al­
ready warm and the engine compartment is
also heated by the sun's rays.
(D Note
If the engine has been under heavy load for
an extended period of time, heat builds up in
the engine compartment after th@ engine is
switched
off and there is a risk of damaging
the engine . For this reason, let the engine run
at idle for approximately two minutes before
shutting it
off.
Messages
Turn off ignition before leaving vehicle. Battery
is discharging
This message appears and a warning tone sounds
if you open the driver's door when the ignition is
switched on. Switch the ignition
off so that the
battery will not discharge.
Pressing start/stop button again will switch off
engine.
This message appears when you press the
I START ENGIN E STOP ! button while driving.
Engine start system: malfunction! Please con­
tact Service
The engine automatic start system has a mal­
function. Drive to an authorized Audi dealer or
autho rized Audi Service Facility immediately to

Your vehicle is equipped with an electromechani­
cal parking brake

is designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
unintentionally and replaces the hand brake.
Setting /manuall y re le asing the parking
bra ke
.. Pull the(®) switch to set the parking brake. The
LED in the switch illuminates. The -(USA
models)/ . (Canada models) indicator light al­
so turns on in the instrument cluster display .

Releasing the parking brake automatically
Req uirement: the driver's door must be closed
and the park ing brake must be set.

Starting from a stop .
Emergency braking function
You can use the emergency brak ing function in an
emergency situation, or if the standard brake op­
eration mal functions or is disabled .

braking by mistake, a warning tone (buzzer)

Parking

is st ation ary and the e ngine is runni ng. Oth­
erwise, the vehi cle will s tart to move imme­
diate ly and this could result i n an accident.
- E mergency brak ing sho uld only be used i n
an emergency, when the norma l bra ke pe dal
has failed or the brake peda l is o bstr ucted .
During emergency brak ing, your vehicle will
brake s imilar to heavy braking. ESC and the
associated components (ABS, ASR, EDL)
cannot ove rcome the laws of physics. In co r­
ners and when road or weather conditions
are bad, a fu ll brake application can cause
the vehicle to s kid or the rea r end to swe rve,
whi ch in crease s the risk of an ac cident.
- I f the power supply fails, you cannot set the
pa rking bra ke if it is released. In this ca se,
p ar k the vehicle on leve l grou nd and secure
it by plac ing the sele ctor lever in the P pos i­
tion. See an authorized A udi dealer or au -
thorized A udi Service Facil ity for assistance.

~ To shift down one gear, tap the shift paddle 0-
If the sh ift paddles are tapped while in the D/S
selecto r lever posit io n, automatic mode switches
off briefly . To switch from manually shifting back
to a utomatic shifting immediately, tap the shift
paddle

To keep shifting using the shift paddles, move
the sele ctor lever to the right out of the D/S posi­
tion into the t ipt ronic shift gate.
The transm ission automatically shifts up o r down
befo re critical engine speed is reached.
The transm ission only a llows manual sh ift ing
when the engine speed is within the permitted
range.
(D Tips
- If you sh ift to the next lowest gear, the
transm ission w ill only shift if the engine w ill
not be over-revved.
- With kick-down, the transmission shifts to a
l ower gear, depending on vehicle speed and
engine speed.
- tiptronic does not wo rk if the t ransmiss ion
i s r unning in emergency mode.
Kick-down
Kick-down enables maximum acceleration.
When you press the accelerator pedal down be­
yond the resistance point , the automatic trans ­
m iss ion downshifts into a lower gear and the en­
g ine utilizes its fu ll power , depend ing on veh icle
speed and engine R PM.
It shifts up into t he next
h igher gea r once the maximum spec ified engine
RP M is reached.
A WARNING
Please note that the wheels could spin on
slick or slippery roads when kick-down is ac­
tive.

Launch Control-Program
The Launch Control Program enables maximum
acceleration .
Requirement: the engine must be at operating
temperature and the steering wheel must not be
turned .
~ With the engine running, press the l1' 0FF I but­
ton briefly one t ime

~ Pull the selector lever back out of the D/S posi­
tion briefly to select the S position, or press it
toward the r ight into the tiptron ic position or
select the
Dynamic dr iving mode in dr ive se­
lect*

~ Press the brake pedal fi rm ly w ith your left foo t
and hold it all the way down for at least 1 sec ­
ond.
~ At the same time, p ress the gas peda l all the
way down with your right foot until the eng ine
reaches and stays at a high RPM level.
~ Remove your left foot from the brake.
A WARNING
- Always adapt your driving to the t raff ic flow.
- Only use Launch Control when road and traf-
f ic conditions allow it and other drivers will
not be endange red or impacted by your dr iv­
ing and the vehicle's acceleration.
- Please note that the d rive wheels can spin
and the vehicle can b reak away when spo rt
mode is switched on, especially when the
road is slippery.
- Once the vehicle has started mov ing, press
the
! .P-O FF I button briefly to turn the spo rt
mode off.
(D Tips
- The transmission temperature may increase
significant ly after using the launch control
prog ram. If that happens, the prog ram may
no t be ava ilable for a few minutes.

Using Audi drive select incorrectly can lead to
collisions, other accidents and serious inju­
ries.
Description
App lies to: ve hicles w ith Aud i d rive select
The vehicle setup in each mode depends on the
veh icle's features . However, the engine and
steer ing are always affe cted.
E ngine and automatic tr an smi ssi on
Depending on the mode, the engine and auto­
matic transmiss ion respond more qu ickly or in a
more balanced manner to accelerator pedal
movements .
Adaptive damper s (Audi m agnetic ride )*
The adaptive dampers use sensors to record in­
formation regarding steering movements, brak ­
ing and accelerat ion operat ions by the driver,
road surface, driving speed, and load. With dr ive
select, you can adjust the adaptive dampers to
sporty (dynamic), comfortable (comfort) or ba l­
a nced (auto).
Stee ring
The power steer ing adapts . Indirect steering that
moves eas ily as in comfort mode is especially
suited to long drives on a highway. The dynam ic
mode provides sporty, direct steering.
Torque distribution
The sport d ifferent ial d istr ibutes the dr ive power
to the rear axle based on the situation . The distri­
bution of power varies depend ing on the selected
mode from mode rate
( Comfort ) to sporty ( D y­
nami c). The goal is a high leve l of agility and ab il­
ity to acce lerate o n curves . The vehicle is very re­
sponsive to steering.
Engine sound *
The engine sound adapts to the current mode
and can be subtle to sporty.

In some models, the maximum vehicle speed
can only be reached in the auto and dynamic
modes.

You can change the dr iv ing mode whe n the vehi­
cle is st ationary or while driving. If traff ic per­
mits, after changing modes, b riefly take your
foot off the accelerator pedal so that the recently
selected mode is also activated for the engine .

Electronic stabilization
control (ESC)
Description
Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC) supports
driver safety.
It reduces the risk of slipping and
improves driving stability. ESC detects critical sit­
uations such as the vehicle oversteering and un­
dersteering or the wheels are spinning. The vehi­
cle is stabilized by applying the brakes or reduc ­
ing engine torque. When ESC engages, the
G1 in­
dicator light blinks in the instrument cluster.
The following systems are integrated in the ESC:
Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
ABS prevents the wheels from locking when brak­
ing. The vehicle can still be steered even during
hard braking. Apply steady pressure to the brake
pedal. Do not pump the pedal. A pulsing in the
brake pedal indicates that the system is acting to
stabilize the vehicle .
Brake assist system
The brake assist system can decrease braking dis­
tance. It increases braking power when the driver
presses the brake pedal quickly in emergency sit­
uations . You must press and hold the brake pedal
until the dangerous situation is over .
Anti-slip regulation (ASR)
ASR reduces engine power when the drive wheels
begin spinning and adapts the force to the road
conditions. This makes it easier to start, acceler­
ate and drive up hills .
Electronic differential lock (EDL)
EDL applies the brakes to a wheel that starts
spinning and transfers the drive power to the
other driving wheels. This function is not availa­
ble at higher speeds.
In extreme cases, EDL automatically switches
off
to keep the brake on the braked wheel from over­ heating. The vehicle is still working correctly. EDL
will switch on again automatically when condi­
tions have returned to normal.

recommendation
The ESC helps to stabilize the vehicle by changing
the steering torque.
Selective wheel torque control
Selective wheel torque control is used when driv­
ing on curves. The front whee l on the inside of
the curve or both wheels on the inside of the
cu rve are braked selectively as needed. This al­
lows more precise driving in curves. The applica ­
ble system may not activate when driving in wet
or snowy conditions.
A WARNING
- The ESC and its integrated systems cannot
overcome the limits imposed by natural physical laws. This is especially important
on slippery or wet roads. If the systems be­
gin acting to stabilize your vehicle, you
should immediately alter your speed to
match the road and traffic conditions. Do
not let the increased safety provided tempt
you into taking risks. This could increase
your risk of a collision .
- Please note the risk of a collision increases
when driving fast, especially through curves
and on slippery or wet roads, and when driv­ ing too close to objects ahead. The ESC and
its integrated systems cannot always pre­
vent collisions -there is still a risk of acci­
dents!
- Press the accelerator pedal carefully when
accelerating on even, slippery surfaces such
as ice and snow. The drive wheels can spin
even when these control systems are instal­
led and this can affect driving stability and
increase the risk of a collision.
(j) Tips
-The ABS and ASR only function correctly
when all four wheels have a similar wear
condition. Different tire sizes can lead to a
reduction in engine power.
- You may hear noises when the systems de­
scribed are working.

-If the front spoiler is damaged or you install
another spoiler, make sure the front wheel
brakes are vent ilated properly. Otherwise,
the brake system could overheat, wh ich re­
duces the ir effectiveness .
- Failure of a brake circuit impairs b raking
performance , which increases brak ing dis­
tance. Avoid driving the vehicle and have it
towed it to the nearest author ized Audi
dealer or author ized A udi Se rvice Facility.
- Never let the vehicle roll while t he engine is
stopped because this increases the risk of a n

- If the bra ke booste r is not working, you will
have to press m uch ha rder on the bra ke
ped al to compensate for the lac k of th e
booster.
- Never let the brakes "rub " by pressing the
pedal light ly when bra king is no t actually
ne cessary . T his cause s the brakes to over­
hea t and i ncre ases br aking di stance and
ca uses wear.
- B efo re driv ing downh ill a long dis tance on a
steep h ill, decrease your speed and se lec t a
l ower gear . This makes use of the engine
braking effect and relieves the brakes . If
you need to b rake additionally, brake in in­
tervals and not continuously.
@ Tips
- If the brake booste r is not working, you
must press the brake pedal with much more
fo rce than normal.
- If you retrofit yo ur vehicle with a front spoil­
er, whee l
covers or similar items, make sure
that the air flow to the front whee ls is not
i nterr upted . Otherw ise the brake system
ca n become too hot .
