(3) Install retaining clip.
(4) Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the
O-ring on the nozzle end of each injector.
(5) Insert fuel injector nozzles into openings in
intake manifold. Seat the injectors in place. Tighten
fuel rail mounting screws to 22.5 N´m63 N´m
(200630 in. lbs.).
(6) Attach electrical connectors to fuel injectors,
refer to the fuel injector connector section for electri-
cal connector installation.
(7) Connect fuel supply tube to fuel rail. Refer to
Quick Connect Fittings in the Fuel Delivery Section
of this Group.
FUEL TANK
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect the negative battery cable (Fig. 28).
(2) Perform fuel system pressure release, refer to
the fuel system pressure release procedure in this
section.
(3) Raise and support vehicle on hoist.
(4) Disconnect vapor line from EVAP canister tube.
(5) Remove EVAP canister (Fig. 29).
(6) Drain fuel tank. Remove the drain port cap and
remove fuel. Drain fuel tank into holding tank or a
properly labeledGasolinesafety container. Reinstall
drain port cap when done draining fuel (Fig. 30).

(7) Disconnect fuel pump module electrical connec-
tor and ground wire (Fig. 31).
(8) Disconnect the fuel tube from Fuel Filter/Reg-
ulator. Refer to Quick Connect Fittings in the Fuel
Delivery section of this group.
(9) Disconnect fuel filler tube and filler vent tube
from filler hose at fuel tank.
(10) Support tank with transmission jack. Loosen
tank mounting straps and lower tank slightly.
(11) Remove tank mounting straps and lower tank.
INSTALLATION
(1) Position fuel tank on transmission jack.
(2) Raise tank into position.
(3) Tighten fuel tank strap nuts to 22.5 N´m (200
in. lbs.) torque. Remove transmission jack. Ensure
straps are not twisted or bent.(4) Connect fuel filler tube tank inlet nipple.
Tighten clamp.
(5) Connect EVAP vent hose.
(6) Attach fuel tubes to pump module and chassis
fuel tube. Refer to Quick Connect Fittings in the Fuel
Delivery section of this Group.
(7) Attach electrical connector and ground wire to
fuel pump module.
(8) Install vapor lines to EVAP canister.
(9) Install EVAP canister.
(10) Lower vehicle.
(11) Fill fuel tank, install filler cap, and connect
battery cable.
CAUTION: When using the ASD Fuel System Test,
the Auto Shutdown (ASD) Relay remains energized
for either 7 minutes, until the test is stopped, or
until the ignition switch is turned to the Off posi-
tion.
(12) Use the DRB scan tool ASD Fuel System Test
to pressurize the fuel system. Check for leaks.
FUEL FILLER NECK
REMOVAL
(1) Loosen fuel filler tube cap.
(2) Remove fuel filler neck screws (Fig. 32).
(3) Raise and support vehicle.
(4) Remove splash shield from wheel well.
(5) Disconnect fuel fill vapor tube.
(6) Disconnect fuel filler tube from fuel tank.
(7) Remove groundstrap from body.
(8) Remove filler neck (Fig. 33).

1 second. Therefore, battery voltage is not supplied to
the fuel pump, ignition coil, fuel injectors and heated
oxygen sensors.
ENGINE START-UP MODE
This is an OPEN LOOP mode. If the vehicle is in
park or neutral (automatic transaxles) or the clutch
pedal is depressed (manual transaxles) the ignition
switch energizes the starter relay. The following
actions occur when the starter motor is engaged.
²If the PCM receives the camshaft position sensor
and crankshaft position sensor signals, it energizes
the Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay and fuel pump relay.
If the PCM does not receive both signals within
approximately one second, it will not energize the
ASD relay and fuel pump relay. The ASD and fuel
pump relays supply battery voltage to the fuel pump,
fuel injectors, ignition coil and heated oxygen sen-
sors.
²The PCM energizes the injectors (on the 69É
degree falling edge) for a calculated pulse width until
it determines crankshaft position from the camshaft
position sensor and crankshaft position sensor sig-
nals. The PCM determines crankshaft position within
1 engine revolution.
²After determining crankshaft position, the PCM
begins energizing the injectors in sequence. It adjusts
injector pulse width and controls injector synchroni-
zation by turning the individual ground paths to the
injectors On and Off.
²When the engine idles within664 RPM of its
target RPM, the PCM compares current MAP sensor
value with the atmospheric pressure value received
during the Ignition Switch On (zero RPM) mode. If
the PCM does not detect a minimum difference
between the two values, it sets a MAP diagnostic
trouble code into memory.
Once the ASD and fuel pump relays have been
energized, the PCM determines injector pulse width
based on the following:
²Battery voltage
²Engine coolant temperature
²Engine RPM
²Intake air temperature (IAT)
²Throttle position
²The number of engine revolutions since cranking
was initiated.
During Start-up the PCM maintains ignition tim-
ing at 9É BTDC.
ENGINE WARM-UP MODE
This is an OPEN LOOP mode. The following inputs
are received by the PCM:
²Engine coolant temperature
²Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)
²Intake air temperature (IAT)²Crankshaft position (engine speed)

The PCM adjusts injector pulse width and controls
injector synchronization by turning the individual
ground paths to the injectors On and Off.
The PCM adjusts ignition timing and engine idle
speed. Engine idle speed is adjusted through the idle
air control motor.
CRUISE OR IDLE MODE
When the engine is at operating temperature this
is a CLOSED LOOP mode. During cruising or idle
the following inputs are received by the PCM:
²Intake air temperature
²Engine coolant temperature
²Manifold absolute pressure
²Crankshaft position (engine speed)
²Camshaft position
²Knock sensor
²Throttle position
²Exhaust gas oxygen content
²A/C control positions
²Power steering pressure switch
²Battery voltage

The PCM adjusts injector pulse width and controls
injector synchronization by turning the individual
ground paths to the injectors On and Off.
The PCM adjusts engine idle speed and ignition
timing. The PCM adjusts the air/fuel ratio according
to the oxygen content in the exhaust gas (measured
by the upstream and downstream heated oxygen sen-
sor).
The PCM monitors for engine misfire. During
active misfire and depending on the severity, the
PCM either continuously illuminates or flashes the
malfunction indicator lamp (Check Engine light on
instrument panel). Also, the PCM stores an engine
misfire DTC in memory.
The PCM performs several diagnostic routines.
They include:
²Oxygen sensor monitor
²Downstream heated oxygen sensor diagnostics
during open loop operation (except for shorted)
²Fuel system monitor
²EGR monitor
²Purge system monitor

The PCM compares the upstream and downstream
heated oxygen sensor inputs to measure catalytic
convertor efficiency. If the catalyst efficiency drops
below the minimum acceptable percentage, the PCM
stores a diagnostic trouble code in memory.
During certain idle conditions, the PCM may enter
a variable idle speed strategy. During variable idle
speed strategy the PCM adjusts engine speed based
on the following inputs.
²A/C sense
²Battery voltage
²Battery temperature
²Engine coolant temperature
²Engine run time
²Power steering pressure switch
²Vehicle mileage
ACCELERATION MODE
This is a CLOSED LOOP mode. The PCM recog-
nizes an abrupt increase in Throttle Position sensor
output voltage or MAP sensor output voltage as a
demand for increased engine output and vehicle
acceleration. The PCM increases injector pulse width
in response to increased fuel demand.
DECELERATION MODE
This is a CLOSED LOOP mode. During decelera-
tion the following inputs are received by the PCM:
²A/C pressure transducer
²A/C sense
²Battery voltage
²Intake air temperature
²Engine coolant temperature
²Crankshaft position (engine speed)
²Exhaust gas oxygen content (upstream heated
oxygen sensor)
²Knock sensor
²Manifold absolute pressure
²Power steering pressure switch
²Throttle position
²IAC motor control changes in response to MAP
sensor feedback.
The PCM may receive a closed throttle input from
the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) when it senses an
abrupt decrease in manifold pressure. This indicates
a hard deceleration. In response, the PCM may
momentarily turn off the injectors. This helps
improve fuel economy, emissions and engine braking.
If decel fuel shutoff is detected, downstream oxy-
gen sensor diagnostics is performed.WIDE-OPEN-THROTTLE MODE
This is an OPEN LOOP mode. During wide-open-
throttle operation, the following inputs are received
by the PCM:
²Intake air temperature
²Engine coolant temperature
²Engine speed
²Knock sensor
²Manifold absolute pressure
²Throttle position
When the PCM senses a wide-open-throttle condi-
tion through the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) it de-
energizes the A/C compressor clutch relay. This
disables the air conditioning system.
The PCM does not monitor the heated oxygen sen-
sor inputs during wide-open-throttle operation except
for downstream heated oxygen sensor and both
shorted diagnostics. The PCM adjusts injector pulse
width to supply a predetermined amount of addi-
tional fuel.
IGNITION SWITCH OFF MODE
When the operator turns the ignition switch to the
OFF position, the following occurs:
²All outputs are turned off, unless 02 Heater
Monitor test is being run. Refer to the Emission sec-
tion for On-Board Diagnostics.
²No inputs are monitored except for the heated
oxygen sensors. The PCM monitors the heating ele-
ments in the oxygen sensors and then shuts down.
SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS
OPERATION
The PCM can test many of its own input and out-
put circuits. If the PCM senses a fault in a major
system, the PCM stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code
(DTC) in memory.

POWER DISTRIBUTION CENTER
The Power Distribution Center (PDC) is located
next to the battery (Fig. 1). The PDC contains the
starter relay, radiator fan relay, A/C compressor
clutch relay, auto shutdown relay, fuel pump relay
and several fuses.
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is a digital
computer containing a microprocessor (Fig. 2). The
PCM receives input signals from various switches
and sensors that are referred to as PCM Inputs.
Based on these inputs, the PCM adjusts various
engine and vehicle operations through devices that
are referred to as PCM Outputs.

Based on inputs it receives, the PCM adjusts fuel
injector pulse width, idle speed, ignition spark
advance, ignition coil dwell and EVAP canister purge
operation. The PCM regulates the cooling fan, air
conditioning and speed control systems. The PCM
changes generator charge rate by adjusting the gen-
erator field. The PCM also performs diagnostics.
The PCM adjusts injector pulse width (air-fuel
ratio) based on the following inputs.
²Battery voltage
²Coolant temperature

²Exhaust gas content (oxygen sensor)

The PCM adjusts ignition timing based on the fol-

The Auto Shutdown (ASD) and fuel pump relays
are mounted externally, but turned on and off by the
PCM.
The crankshaft position sensor signal is sent to the
PCM. If the PCM does not receive the signal within
approximately one second of engine cranking, it deac-
tivates the ASD relay and fuel pump relay. When
these relays deactivate, power is shut off from the
fuel injectors, ignition coils, heating element in the
oxygen sensors and the fuel pump.
The PCM contains a voltage converter that
changes battery voltage to a regulated 8 volts direct
current to power the camshaft position sensor, crank-
shaft position sensor and vehicle speed sensor. The
PCM also provides a 5 volt direct current supply for
the manifold absolute pressure sensor and throttle
position sensor.
PCM GROUND
OPERATION
Ground is provided through multiple pins of the
PCM connector. Depending on the vehicle there may
be as many as three different ground pins. There are
power grounds and sensor grounds.
The power grounds are used to control the ground
side of any relay, solenoid, ignition coil or injector.
The signal ground is used for any input that uses
sensor return for ground, and the ground side of any
internal processing component.
The SBEC III case is shielded to prevent RFI and
EMI. The PCM case is grounded and must be firmly
attached to a good, clean body ground.
Internally all grounds are connected together, how-
ever there is noise suppression on the sensor ground.
For EMI and RFI protection the case is also
grounded separately from the ground pins.
5 VOLT SUPPLYÐPCM OUTPUT
OPERATION
The PCM supplies 5 volts to the following sensors:
²A/C pressure transducer
²Engine coolant temperature sensor
²Manifold absolute pressure sensor
²Throttle position sensor
²Linear EGR solenoid
8-VOLT SUPPLYÐPCM OUTPUT
OPERATION
The PCM supplies 8 volts to the crankshaft posi-
tion sensor, camshaft position sensor.
FUEL CORRECTION or ADAPTIVE MEMORIES
DESCRIPTION
In Open Loop, the PCM changes pulse width with-
out feedback from the O2 Sensors. Once the engine
warms up to approximately 30 to 35É F, the PCM
goes into closed loopShort Term Correctionand
utilitzes feedback from the O2 Sensors. Closed loop
Long Term Adaptive Memoryis maintained above
170É to 190É F unless the PCM senses wide open
throttle. At that time the PCM returns to Open Loop
operation.
OPERATION
Short Term
The first fuel correction program that begins func-
tioning is the short term fuel correction. This system
corrects fuel delivery in direct proportion to the read-
ings from the Upstream O2 Sensor.
The PCM monitors the air/fuel ratio by using the
input voltage from the O2 Sensor. When the voltage
reaches its preset high or low limit, the PCM begins
to add or remove fuel until the sensor reaches its
switch point. The short term corrections then begin.
The PCM makes a series of quick changes in the
injector pulse-width until the O2 Sensor reaches its
opposite preset limit or switch point. The process
then repeats itself in the opposite direction.
Short term fuel correction will keep increasing or
decreasing injector pulse-width based upon the
upstream O2 Sensor input. The maximum range of
authority for short term memory is 25% (+/-) of base
pulse-width.
Long Term
The second fuel correction program is the long
term adaptive memory. In order to maintain correct
emission throughout all operating ranges of the
engine, a cell structure based on engine rpm and load
(MAP) is used.
There are up to 16 cells. Two cells are used only
during idle, based upon TPS and Park/Neutral
switch inputs. There may be two other cells used for
deceleration, based on TPS, engine rpm, and vehicle
speed. The other twelve cells represent a manifold
pressure and an rpm range. Six of the cells are high
rpm and the other six are low rpm. Each of these
cells is a specific MAP voltage range.

As the engine enters one of these cells the PCM
looks at the amount of short term correction being
used. Because the goal is to keep short term at 0 (O2
Sensor switching at 0.5 volt), long term will update
in the same direction as short term correction was
moving to bring the short term back to 0. Once short
term is back at 0, this long term correction factor is
stored in memory.
The values stored in long term adaptive memory
are used for all operating conditions, including open
loop. However, the updating of the long term memoryoccurs after the engine has exceeded approximately
17É F, with fuel control in closed loop and two min-
utes of engine run time. This is done to prevent any
transitional temperature or start-up compensations
from corrupting long term fuel correction.
Long term adaptive memory can change the pulse-
width by as much as 25%, which means it can correct
for all of short term. It is possible to have a problem
that would drive long term to 25% and short term to
another 25% for a total change of 50% away from
base pulse-width calculation.

Fuel Correction Diagnostics
There are two fuel correction diagnostic routines:

A DTC is set and the MIL is illuminated if the
PCM detects either of these conditions.
PROGRAMMABLE COMMUNICATIONS
INTERFACE (PCI) BUS
OPERATION
Various modules exchange information through a
communications port called the PCI Bus. The Power-
train Control Module (PCM) transmits the Malfunc-
tion Indicator Lamp (Check Engine) On/Off signal
and engine RPM on the PCI Bus. The PCM receives
the Air Conditioning select input, transaxle gear
position inputs over the PCI Bus. The PCM also
receives the air conditioning evaporator temperature
signal from the PCI Bus.

AIR CONDITIONING PRESSURE

OPERATION
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors
the A/C compressor discharge (high side) pressure
through the air conditioning pressure transducer.
The transducer supplies an input to the PCM. The
PCM engages the A/C compressor clutch if pressure
is sufficient for A/C system operation.
AUTOMATIC SHUTDOWN (ASD) SENSEÐPCM
INPUT
OPERATION
The ASD sense circuit informs the PCM when the
ASD relay energizes. A 12 volt signal at this input
indicates to the PCM that the ASD has been acti-
vated. This input is used only to sense that the ASD
relay is energized.
When energized, the ASD relay supplies battery
voltage to the fuel injectors, ignition coils and the
heating element in each oxygen sensor. If the PCM
does not receive 12 volts from this input after
grounding the ASD relay, it sets a Diagnostic Trouble
Code (DTC).

BATTERY VOLTAGEÐPCM INPUT
OPERATION
In order for the PCM to operate, it must be sup-
plied with battery voltage and ground. The PCM
monitors the direct battery feed input to determine
battery charging rate and to control the injector ini-
tial opening point. It also has back-up RAM memory
used to store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (supply work-
ing DTCs). Direct battery feed is also used to perform
key-OFF diagnostics and to supply working voltage
to the controller for OBDII.
The five and eight volt regulators are protected
from shorts to ground. This protection allows diag-
nostics to be performed should the five volt power
supply become shorted to ground at any of the sen-
sors. A short to ground in the five volt power supply
will cause a ªno-startº situation. There is a Diagnos-
tic Trouble Code (DTC) if the five-volt power supply
becomes shorted to ground. Refer to the Diagnostic
Procedures Manual for more details on any on-board
diagnostic information.
If battery voltage is low the PCM will increase
injector pulse width (period of time that the injector
is energized).
The direct battery feed to the PCM is used as a
reference point to sense battery voltage.
Effect on Fuel Injectors
Fuel injectors are rated for operation at a specific
voltage. If the voltage increases, the plunger will
open faster and further (more efficient) and con-
versely, if voltage is low the injector will be slow to
open and will not open as far. Therefore, if sensed
battery voltage drops, the PCM increases injector
pulse-width to maintain the same volume of fuel
through the injector.
Charging
The PCM uses sensed battery voltage to verify that
target charging voltage (determined by Battery Tem-
perature Sensor) is being reached. To maintain the
target charging voltage, the PCM will full field the
generator to 0.5 volt above target then turn OFF to
0.5 volt below target. This will continue to occur up
to a 100 Hz frequency, 100 times per second.
BRAKE SWITCHÐPCM INPUT
OPERATION
When the brake switch is activated, the PCM
receives an input indicating that the brakes are
being applied. The brake switch is mounted on the
brake pedal support bracket.
CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSORÐPCM INPUT
DESCRIPTION
The camshaft position sensor attaches to the rear
of the cylinder head. The PCM determines fuel injec-
tion synchronization and cylinder identification from
inputs provided by the camshaft position sensor (Fig.
3) and crankshaft position sensor. From the two
inputs, the PCM determines crankshaft position.
OPERATION
The PCM sends approximately 8 volts to the hall
affect sensor. This voltage is required to operate the
hall effect chip and the electronics inside the sensor.
A ground for the sensor is provided through the sen-
sor return circuit. The input to the PCM occurs on a
5 volt output reference circuit.
A target magnet attaches to the rear of the cam-
shaft and indexes to the correct position. The target
magnet has four different poles arranged in an asym-
metrical pattern (Fig. 4). As the target magnet
rotates, the camshaft position sensor senses the
change in polarity (Fig. 5). The sensor output switch
switches from high (5.0 volts) to low (0.5 volts) as the
target magnet rotates. When the north pole of the
target magnet passes under the sensor, the output
switches high. The sensor output switches low when
the south pole of the target magnet passes under-
neath.
The sensor also acts as a thrust plate to control
camshaft endplay.

IGNITION CIRCUIT SENSEÐPCM INPUT
OPERATION
The ignition circuit sense input tells the Power-
train Control Module (PCM) the ignition switch has
energized the ignition circuit.
Battery voltage is also supplied to the PCM
through the Ignition Switch when the ignition is in
the RUN or START position. This is called the9igni-
tion senseº circuit and is used to ªwake upº the PCM.
Voltage on the ignition input can be as low as 6 volts
and the PCM will still function. Voltage is supplied to
this circuit to power the 8-volt regulator and to allow
the PCM to perform fuel, ignition and emissions con-
trol functions. The battery voltage on this line is sup-
plied to the 8-volt regulator which then passes on a
power-up supply to the 5-volt regulator.
INLET AIR TEMPERATURE SENSORÐPCM
INPUT
DESCRIPTION
The IAT sensor attaches to the intake air duct
(Fig. 15).
The IAT Sensor is a Negative Temperature Coeffi-
cient (NTC) Sensor that provides information to the
PCM regarding the temperature of the air entering
the intake manifold.
OPERATION
Intake Air Temperature
The inlet air temperature sensor replaces the
intake air temperature sensor and the battery tem-
perature sensor. The PCM uses the information from
the inlet air temperature sensor to determine valuesto use as an intake air temperature sensor and a bat-
tery temperature sensor.
The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor value is
used by the PCM to determine air density.
The PCM uses this information to calculate:
²Injector pulse width
²Adjustment of ignition timing (to prevent spark
knock at high intake air temperatures)
Battery Temperature
The inlet air temperature sensor replaces the
intake air temperature sensor and the battery tem-
perature sensor. The PCM uses the information from
the inlet air temperature sensor to determine values
for the PCM to use as an intake air temperature sen-
sor and a battery temperature sensor.
The battery temperature information along with
data from monitored line voltage (B+), is used by the
PCM to vary the battery charging rate. System volt-
age will be higher at colder temperatures and is
gradually reduced at warmer temperatures.
The battery temperature information is also used
for OBD II diagnostics. Certain faults and OBD II
monitors are either enabled or disabled depending
upon the battery temperature sensor input (example:
disable purge and EGR, enable LDP). Most OBD II
monitors are disabled below 20ÉF.
KNOCK SENSORÐPCM INPUT
DESCRIPTION
The knock sensor threads into the side of the cyl-
inder block (Fig. 16). The knock sensor is designed to
detect engine vibration that is caused by detonation.
