No. 1 (Tan/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short
to ground. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance
is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
10) Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and
S/C vent solenoid control circuit at S/C servo connector terminal No.
2 (Light Green/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair
short to ground. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If
resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
11) Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance of S/C vacuum
solenoid control circuit between S/C servo connector terminal No. 1
and PCM connector C3, terminal No. 4 (Tan/Red wire). If resistance is
5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Perform TEST VER-4A under
VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next
step.
12) Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of S/C vent solenoid
control circuit between S/C servo connector terminal No. 2 and PCM
connector C3, terminal No. 5 (Light Green/Red wire). If resistance is
5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Perform TEST VER-4A under
VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace S/C
servo. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS.
13) Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and
brake switch output circuit at S/C servo connector terminal No. 3
(Dark Blue/Red wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short
to ground. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance
is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
14) Reconnect PCM. Disconnect brake switch connector. Turn
ignition on. Turn S/C on. Using a 12-volt test light, probe S/C power
supply circuit at brake switch connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Red
wire). If test light is illuminated and bright, go to next step. If
test light is not illuminated or dim, go to step 17).
15) Turn ignition off. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of
S/C brake switch output circuit between S/C servo connector terminal
No. 3 and brake switch connector terminal No. 4 (Dark Blue/Red wire).
If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Perform TEST
VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go
to next step.
16) Check brake switch adjustment. See BRAKE SWITCH under
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Adjust as necessary. Perform TEST VER- 4A
under VERIFICATION TESTS. If brake switch adjustment is okay, replace
brake switch. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS.
17) Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM. Inspect connectors.
Clean or repair as necessary. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance of
S/C power supply circuit between PCM connector C3, terminal No. 11 and
brake switch connector terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Red wire). If resistance\
is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Perform TEST VER-4A under
VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM.
Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS.
FTC P1596: SPEED CONTROL SWITCH ALWAYS HIGH
FTC P1596 will set if an open circuit is detected in Speed
Control (S/C) switch circuit when ignition is on.
Possible Causes:
* Defective clockspring.
* S/C switch ground circuit open.
* Defective ON/OFF switch.
* Defective PCM.
* S/C switch signal circuit open or shorted to voltage.

connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR

IDENTIFICATION. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS.
1) Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read S/C inputs. While
observing display, press S/C ON/OFF switch several times and leave on.
If scan tool displays S/C switch OFF and ON, go to next step. If scan
tool does not display OFF and ON, go to step 3).
2) Using scan tool, measure S/C switch voltage. While
observing display, wiggle wiring between S/C switch and PCM. If
voltage was more than 4.9 volts at any time during wiggling, repair
wiring as necessary. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If
voltage was 4.9 volts or less during wiggling, test is complete.
3) Turn ignition off. Disconnect S/C ON/OFF switch. Inspect
connector. Clean or repair as necessary. Using an ohmmeter, measure
resistance of S/C switch ground circuit. If resistance is 5 ohms or
more, repair open ground circuit. Perform TEST VER-4A under
VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next
step.
4) Turn ignition on. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage on
S/C switch signal circuit. If voltage is more than 6 volts, repair
short to voltage. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If
voltage is 6 volts or less, go to next step.
5) Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM. Inspect connectors.
Clean or repair as necessary. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance of
S/C switch signal circuit between ON/OFF switch connector and PCM
connector C3, terminal No. 32 (White/Light Green wire on Ram Van & Ram
Wagon; Red/Light Green wire on all other models). If resistance is
less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go
to step 7).
6) Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance across ON/OFF
switch. Resistance should be 20,300-20,700 ohms. If resistance is not
as specified, replace ON/OFF switch. Perform TEST VER-4A under
VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is as specified, replace PCM.
Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS.
7) Disconnect clockspring 5-pin connector. Clockspring 5-pin
connector is located behind lower steering column shroud. Inspect
connectors. Clean or repair as necessary. Using an ohmmeter, measure
resistance of S/C switch signal circuit between PCM connector C3,
terminal No. 32 and clockspring connector (White/Light Green wire on
Ram Van and Ram Wagon; Red/Light Green wire on all other models). If
resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Perform TEST VER-4A
under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace
clockspring. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS.
FTC P1597: SPEED CONTROL SWITCH ALWAYS LOW
FTC P1597 will set if Speed Control (S/C) switch voltage is
less than 0.39 volts for 2 minutes when ignition is on and battery
voltage is more than 10.4 volts.
Possible Causes:
* S/C ON/OFF switch defective.
* S/C RESUME/ACCEL switch defective.
* S/C switch signal circuit shorted to ground.
* Defective PCM.
* Defective clockspring.
NOTE: For component locations, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS. For
connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR
IDENTIFICATION. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS.
1) Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read S/C switch

voltage. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage
is one volt or more, condition to set FTC is not present at this time.
Test is complete.
2) While observing scan tool, disconnect S/C ON/OFF switch.
If S/C switch voltage changes to 5 volts, replace S/C ON/OFF switch.
Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If voltage does not
change to 5 volts, go to next step.
3) While observing scan tool, disconnect S/C RESUME/ACCEL
switch. If S/C switch voltage changes to 5 volts, replace S/C
RESUME/ACCEL switch. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If
voltage does not change to 5 volts, go to next step.
4) Turn ignition off. Ensure both S/C switches are still
disconnected. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between S/C switch
connector terminals (S/C switch signal circuit and S/C switch ground
circuit). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short circuit.
Perform TEST VER- 4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is 5 ohms
or more, go to next step.
5) Disconnect clockspring 4-pin connector. Clockspring 4-pin
connector is located behind steering wheel. Inspect connector. Clean
or repair as necessary. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between
ground and S/C switch signal circuit at clockspring connector (Dark
Green/Red wire on all models except Ram Van and Ram Wagon; wire color
is not available for Ram Van and Ram Wagon). If resistance is less
than 5 ohms, repair short to ground. Perform TEST VER-4A under
VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
6) Disconnect PCM. Inspect connectors. Clean or repair as
necessary. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and S/C
switch signal circuit at either S/C switch connector (Dark Green/Red
wire on all models except Ram Van and Ram Wagon; wire color is not
available for Ram Van and Ram Wagon). If resistance is less than 5
ohms, repair short to ground. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION
TESTS. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-
4A under VERIFICATION TESTS.
FTC P1683: SPEED CONTROL POWER RELAY CIRCUIT
FTC P1683 will set if Speed Control (S/C) power supply
circuit is open or shorted when S/C is turned on.
Possible Causes:
* Brake switch out of adjustment.
* S/C brake switch output circuit open or shorted.
* Defective S/C servo.
* Defective brake switch.
* S/C vacuum or vent solenoid control circuits open or
shorted.
* Defective PCM.
* Ground circuit open.
* S/C power supply circuit open.
NOTE: For component locations, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS. For
connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR
IDENTIFICATION. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS.
NOTE: Ensure brake pedal is not depressed during the following
steps.
1) Turn ignition off. Disconnect S/C servo connector. Inspect
connector. Clean or repair as necessary. Turn ignition on. Using scan
tool, actuate S/C relay. Using a 12-volt test light, probe S/C brake
switch output circuit at S/C servo connector terminal No. 3 (Dark
Blue/Red wire). If test light is illuminated and bright, go to next

* Signal circuit open or shorted.
* S/C ON/OFF switch defective.
* S/C RESUME/ACCEL switch defective.
* Defective PCM.
* Defective clockspring.
1) Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read S/C switch
voltage. If voltage is more than 4 volts, go to next step. If voltage
is 4 volts or less, go to step 4).
2) Turn ignition off. Disconnect S/C ON/OFF switch. Inspect
connector. Clean or repair as necessary. Connect a jumper wire between
ground and S/C switch signal circuit at S/C ON/OFF switch connector
(Dark Green/Red wire on all models except Ram Van and Ram Wagon; wire
color is not available for Ram Van and Ram Wagon). Turn ignition on.
Using scan tool, read S/C switch voltage. If voltage is less than one
volt, replace S/C ON/OFF switch. Perform TEST VER-4A under
VERIFICATION TESTS. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step.
3) Using a voltmeter, measure voltage on S/C switch signal
circuit. If voltage is less than 4 volts, repair high resistance in
S/C switch signal circuit. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION
TESTS. If voltage is more than 6 volts, repair short to voltage.
Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If voltage is 4-6 volts,
replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS.
4) Turn ignition off. Disconnect S/C ON/OFF switch.
Disconnect PCM. Inspect connectors. Clean or repair as necessary.
Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and S/C switch
signal circuit at PCM connector C3, terminal No. 32 (White/Light Green
wire on Ram Van & Ram Wagon; Red/Light Green wire on all other
models). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground.
Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If resistance is 5 ohms
or more, go to next step.
5) Reconnect PCM. Ensure S/C ON/OFF switch is still
disconnected. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read S/C switch
voltage. If voltage is more than 4 volts, replace ON/OFF switch.
Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If voltage is 4 volts or
less, go to next step.
6) Disconnect RESUME/ACCEL switch. Using scan tool, read S/C
switch voltage. If voltage is more than 4 volts, replace RESUME/ACCEL
switch. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If voltage is 4
volts or less, go to next step.
7) Disconnect clockspring connector located behind lower
steering column shroud. Inspect connector. Clean or repair as
necessary. Using scan tool, read S/C switch voltage. If voltage is
more than 4 volts, replace clockspring. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS
- TRUCKS article. Perform TEST VER-4A under VERIFICATION TESTS. If
voltage is 4 volts or less, test is complete.
NTC-4: SPEED CONTROL RESUME/ACCEL SWITCH
Possible Causes:
* Ground circuit open.
* RESUME/ACCEL switch defective.
* Signal circuit open.
1) Turn ignition off. Disconnect RESUME/ACCEL switch. Inspect
connectors. Clean or repair as necessary. Connect a jumper wire
between ground and S/C switch signal circuit at RESUME/ACCEL switch
connector (Dark Green/Red wire on all models except Ram Van and Ram
Wagon; wire color is not available for Ram Van and Ram Wagon). Turn
ignition on. Using scan tool, read S/C switch voltage. If voltage is
less than one volt, replace RESUME/ACCEL switch. Perform TEST VER-4A

Fully depress brake pedal and rotate brake switch
counterclockwise approximately 30 degrees. Remove brake switch from
bracket. Depress lock tabs holding brake switch mounting bracket and
separate harness connector from brake switch.
Installation
1) Before installing brake switch, reset adjustable plunger
by pulling on plunger head until plunger reaches end of travel.
Connect harness connector to brake switch. Depress brake pedal and
insert brake switch into keyed hole in mounting bracket. Rotate brake
switch clockwise into locked position.
2) Gently pull back on brake pedal until pedal will go no
further. This causes the brake switch plunger to ratchet backward to
the correct position. No further adjustment is required.
SPEED CONTROL SERVO
Removal (Except Ram Van & Ram Wagon)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect electrical
connector and vacuum hose from servo. Using finger pressure only, push
servo cable connector from throttle body bellcrank pin. DO NOT pull
cable connector perpendicular to bellcrank.
2) Remove 2 servo cable mounting nuts. Pull servo cable
sleeve away from mounting bracket to expose cable retaining clip.
Remove retaining clip. Remove servo.
Removal (Ram Van & Ram Wagon)
1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover.
Remove air cleaner assembly. Using finger pressure only, push servo
cable connector from throttle body bellcrank pin. DO NOT pull cable
connector perpendicular to bellcrank.
2) Remove right headlight assembly. Disconnect vacuum hose
and electrical connector at servo. Remove 2 servo mounting bracket
bolts. Remove 2 servo cable mounting nuts. Pull servo cable sleeve
away from mounting bracket to expose cable retaining clip. Remove
retaining clip. Remove servo.
Installation (All Models)
With throttle in full open position, align hole in speed
control cable sleeve with hole in servo pin. Install retaining clip.
To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten mounting
bolts/nuts to 75 INCH lbs. (8.5 N.m).
SPEED CONTROL SWITCHES
Removal & Installation
Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait 2
minutes for air bag system to discharge reserve voltage. Remove 2
screws holding air bag assembly to steering column. Separate air bag
assembly from steering column and disconnect air bag, horn and speed
control switch connectors. Remove screws securing speed control switch
to air bag assembly. Separate speed control switch from air bag
assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure.

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
The Front Beam-Design Iron (FBI) axles is of an iron center
casting (differential housing) with axle shaft tubes extending from
both sides. The tubes are pressed in to form a one-piece axle housing
and is a semi-floating design.
Axle contains an integral carrier with hypoid-type ring gear
and pinion with semi-floating axle shafts. Load is supported by hub
bearings. Axle shafts are retained by nuts at the hub bearings. Hub
bearings are bolted to steering knuckle at outboard end of axle tube
yoke. Hub bearings are serviced as an assembly. On vehicles equipped
with Anti-Lock (ABS) brakes, a brake sensor is mounted on knuckle
assemblies, and tone rings are pressed onto axle shaft.
Differential is a one-piece design and differential pinion
mate shaft is retained with a roll pin. Differential bearing preload
and ring gear backlash is adjusted by use of shims, and pinion bearing
preload is set and maintained by use of a collapsible spacer.
Axle shaft is engaged or disengaged by an axle vacuum shift
motor. Vacuum shift motor is operated by engine vacuum and is
controlled by a switch mounted on transfer case.
AXLE RATIO & IDENTIFICATION
NOTE: Axle ratio can be identified by axle identification tag
attached to axle housing cover. See IDENTIFICATION.

original pinion depth shims. Replace shims with NEW shims of same
thickness.
4) If only pinion and ring gear are being replaced and
original axle housing is used, note pinion depth variance marking on
old pinion and replacement pinion.
5) Using etched markings and pinion depth shim adjustment
chart, determine amount to be added or subtracted from thickness of
original pinion depth shims. See Fig. 4. For example, if etched
marking is +4 on original pinion and -4 on replacement pinion,
thickness of pinion depth shims should be increased by .008" (.20 mm).\
NOTE: When using pinion depth shim adjustment chart, if result is a
negative (-) reading, subtract this amount from thickness of
pinion depth shim pack to obtain thickness of correct shim.
If result is positive (+), add this amount to thickness of
pinion depth shim pack to obtain thickness of correct shim.
If result is zero, this will be nominal standard pinion depth
setting and no shims are required. When using pinion depth
shim adjustment chart, thickness of original pinion depth
shim pack must be accurately determined. If original pinion
depth shim pack dimension cannot be accurately determined,
pinion depth gauge set must be used to properly determine
pinion depth setting. Pinion depth gauge set must also be
used if using replacement axle housing. Proceed to
DETERMINING PINION DEPTH USING PINION DEPTH GAUGE SET.
NOTE: If slinger is used, slinger thickness must also be included
in pinion depth shim pack.

Determining Pinion Depth Using Pinion Depth Gauge Set
1) Use Pinion Depth Gauge Set for all axle models. Place
master pinion block in pinion bore of axle housing. See Fig. 5.
Install discs on arbor. Install arbor in axle housing, with discs
positioned in differential bearing bores. See Fig. 5.
2) Install pinion height block on top of master pinion block,
against arbor. Place gauge block with dial indicator on lowest step of

pinion height block. Zero dial indicator with gauge block flat on
pinion height block.
3) Move gauge block so dial indicator stem contacts arbor.
Move gauge block back and forth (perpendicular to arbor) to get
highest reading. This reading is thickness of required pinion depth
shim pack.
4) To select correct shim, note etched markings on end of
pinion face. Etched marking (in thousandths of an inch) indicates
deviation from standard dimension.
5) When etched marking is negative (-), add this amount to
pinion depth shim pack to obtain correct shim thickness. When etched
marking is positive (+), subtract this amount from pinion depth shim
pack to obtain correct shim thickness. If etched marking is zero, no
change is required in pinion depth shim pack thickness.
6) Measure pinion depth shims separately using micrometer. If
slinger is used, slinger thickness must also be included in pinion
depth shim pack. Remove pinion depth gauge set components from axle
housing.
7) Place pinion depth shim pack in axle housing bore for rear
(inner) bearing race. Using appropriate bearing race installer, drive
rear (inner) bearing race into axle housing. Ensure bearing race is
fully seated.
8) Using bearing race installer, drive front (outer) bearing\
race into axle housing. Ensure bearing race is fully seated. Proceed
to PINION BEARING PRELOAD.

Pinion Bearing Preload
1) Install slinger on pinion (if equipped). Press rear

(1) - Approximate drive axle capacity listed. Lubricant level should
be within 1/2" below bottom of oil filler hole in axle housing
cover.
( 2) - Add container of Mopar Gear Oil Friction Modifier when
refilling.

FLUID TYPE
Use SAE 80W-90 or SAE 90W hypoid gear lubricant with MIL-L-
2105-B and API GL-5 ratings. Also add a container of Mopar Gear Oil
Friction Modifier when refilling.
FLUID DRAIN & REFILL
1) With lubricant of rear axle assembly at normal operating
temperature, raise and support vehicle so rear wheels are free to
rotate. Clean around axle housing cover. Loosen axle housing cover
bolts. Drain lubricant from axle housing. Remove bolts and axle
housing cover.
2) Position differential so hole in differential case faces
down. Wipe all accessible areas of axle housing. Ensure sealing
surfaces on axle housing and cover are clean. Apply a 1/4" thick bead
of silicone sealant on inside of bolt holes and along sealing surfaces
on axle housing cover.
3) Install axle housing cover, axle identification tag and
retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m). Remove oil
filler plug. Add a container of Mopar Gear Oil Friction Modifier. Fill
axle with gear lube. Install oil filler plug. Lower vehicle.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
DIFFERENTIAL NOISE
1) Ensure differential lubricant is at normal operating
temperature. Road test vehicle. Note if differential noise exists in
turns, but not during straight-ahead driving. Probable cause is
incorrect or insufficient rear axle lubricant or additive.
2) Drain and refill rear axle. See FLUID DRAIN & REFILL under
LUBRICATION. Road test vehicle and note if noise still exists, it may
be necessary to disassemble rear axle so differential can be repaired.
See RBI FULL-FLOATING AXLES article for removal of differential case.
TESTING
NOTE: Power-Lok differential can be tested without removing
differential carrier from axle housing. Either test can be
used to check drive axle.
TEST I
1) Place blocks under both front wheels. Ensure engine is off
and transmission is in Neutral. Release parking brake. Raise one rear
wheel until it is completely clear of the floor. Remove wheel. Install
Adapter (6790) to wheel studs, and tighten securely.
2) Using torque wrench on adapter, rotate axle, and record
torque required. Repeat procedure for remaining rear wheel position.
If rotational torque for either rear wheel is less than 30 ft. lbs.
(41 N.m) or greater than 200 ft. lbs. (271 N.m), Power-Lok unit must\
be replaced or repaired.

TEST II
1) Drive vehicle until differential lubricant is at normal
operating temperature. Place a piece of Kraft paper over a smooth
Formica board. Place Formica board with Kraft paper under one rear
wheel. Rear wheel should be centered on board on level surface.
2) Block one front tire with a 2" high by 3" wide wooden
block. Start vehicle. With gradual throttle pressure, attempt to
slowly drive vehicle over wooden block.
3) If Kraft paper slips out from under rear wheel before
vehicle drives over wooden block, move Formica board and Kraft paper
under the other rear wheel.
4) With gradual throttle pressure, attempt to slowly drive
vehicle over wooden block again. If vehicle drives over wooden block
with Formica and Kraft paper under either rear wheel, drive axle is
functioning properly.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Servicing procedure is same as that used for a standard
differential. See appropriate RBI FULL-FLOATING AXLES article for
servicing procedures.
OVERHAUL
DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER
CAUTION: Mark all component locations for reassembly reference. Note
position of clutch pack components before removal. Install
clutch pack components in correct order and original
locations.
Disassembly
1) Place reference mark on differential case lower half and
upper half for reassembly reference. Also place reference mark on
pinion cross shaft and differential case lower half for reassembly
reference.
2) Remove differential case half retaining bolts. Remove
differential case upper half. Remove components from differential case
lower half. See Fig. 1.

Cleaning & Inspection
Clean components with solvent, and dry with compressed air.
