INITIAL TEST
Turn the ignition key to MAR. The message CHECK IN PROGRESS will appear on the configurable multifunction
display. This means that the electronic systems aboard the car are being checked. The test will last for approximately
four seconds. If no faults are found, the message OK will appear on the display after the engine has been started.
IMPORTANT If a failure message appears on the configurable multifunction display, see “Warning lights and
messages” in this section.

The Service Schedule establishes the interventions to be carried out every 20,000 km. This message will appear automatically when the key is
turned to MAR when a distance of 2,000 km (or miles) before the service deadline is reached. The message is then represented every 200 km
until there are 200 km left to the deadline after which the message is represented every 100 km, 50 km, etc... The data can only be reset by a
Fiat Dealership.

WARNINGThe bonnet might fall violently if the support rod is not positioned properly. This
should only be done when the car is stationary.
WARNINGBefore opening the bonnet make sure the windscreen wiper arm is not lifted from
the windscreen.
If the engine is hot, be very careful when you put your hands under the bonnet as
you risk burning yourself. Remember that while the engine is hot, the electric fan
can start up and cause injury. Wait for the engine to cool.WARNING
Scarves, ties and other loose articles of clothing could easily get caught up in
moving parts. This can be extremely dangerous.WARNING
WARNINGFor safety reasons the bonnet must be closed properly to avoid its opening while
the car is travelling. Therefore, always check it is properly closed and the catch
engaged. Should you notice that the catch is not perfectly engaged when
travelling, stop the car immediately and close the bonnet.

EOBD SYSTEM
The European On Board Diagnostic system (EOBD) fitted to engine and
automatic transmission (where provided) electronic control units allows
monitoring and warning of any malfunction to the electronic systems that
could increase exhaust emissions.
The objective is:
❒To keep system efficiency under control
❒Warn when a fault causes emission levels to increase
❒Warn of the need to replace deteriorated components
This diagnostic system indicates the presence of deteriorated
components or system malfunctioning (see section “Warning lights and
Messages”) by the turning on of the instrument panel warning light
U
(together with the relevant message on the multifunction display, where
provided).
NOTE: The car is provided with a diagnostic connector that can be
interfaced with appropriate tools, which makes it possible to read the
error codes stored in the control units, together with a series of specific
parameters for engine operation and diagnosis.
This test can also be performed by traffic controller agents.
IMPORTANT: After a servicing operation at Fiat Dealership aimed to
eliminate malfunctioning connected to the EOBD system, in order to
check the system thoroughly it could be required to run a bench test
and, if necessary, road tests which may also call for a long journey.

If turning the ignition key to MAR, the warning light Udoes not turn on or if, while travelling it
turns on glowing steadily or flashing (together with the message on the multifunction display),
contact Fiat Dealership as soon as possible. Warning light
Uoperation can be checked by means
of special equipment by traffic controller agents. Always comply with the traffic regulations in force
in the country where you are travelling.

CONTAINING RUNNING COSTS
Here are some suggestions which may help you to
keep the running costs of your car down and lower
the amount of toxic emissions released into the
atmosphere.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Car maintenance
Have checks and adjustments carried out in
accordance with the “Service schedule”.
Tyres
Check the pressure of the tyres routinely at an
interval of no more than 4 weeks: if the pressure is
too low, consumption levels increase as resistance to
rolling is higher.
Unnecessary loads
Do not travel with too much luggage stowed in the
boot. The weight of the car (especially when driving in
town) and its trim greatly affects consumption and
stability.Roof rack/ski rack
Remove the roof rack or the ski rack from the roof as
soon as they are no longer used. These accessories
lower air penetration and adversely affect
consumption levels. When needing to carry
particularly voluminous objects, preferably use a
trailer.
Electric devices
Use electric devices only for the amount of time
needed. Rear heated window, additional headlights,
windscreen wipers and heater fan need a considerable
amount of energy, therefore increasing the
requirement of current increases fuel consumption (up
to +25% in the urban cycle).
Climate control
The air conditioner is an additional load which greatly
affects the engine leading to higher consumption (on
average up to +20%). When the temperature outside
the vehicle permits it, use the air vents where possible.
Aerodynamic accessories
The use of non-certified aerodynamic items may
adversely affect air drag and consumption levels.

STORING THE CAR
If the car is to be left inactive for longer than a month,
the following precautions should be noted:
❒Park the car in covered, dry and if possible well-
ventilated premises.
❒Engage a gear.
❒Check that the handbrake is not engaged.
❒Disconnect battery terminals (first disconnect the
negative terminal) and check the battery charge.
This check is to be repeated every month, recharge
if battery charge falls below 12.5V.
IMPORTANT Where relevant, switch off the
electronic car alarm with the remote control.❒Clean and protect the painted parts using protective
wax.
❒Clean and protect the shiny metal parts using special
compounds readily available.
❒Sprinkle talcum powder on the rubber windscreen
and rear window wiper blades and lift them off the
glass.
❒Slightly open the windows.
❒Cover the car with a cloth or perforated plastic
sheet. Do not use sheets of non-perforated plastic
as they do not allow moisture on the car body to
evaporate.
❒Inflate tyres to +0.5 bar above the normal specified
pressure and check it at intervals.
❒Do not drain the engine cooling system.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The fault messages appearing on the multifunction display when the respective panel warning light comes on are
accompanied by specific suggestions (example: “contact garage”, “turn off engine”, “check manual”, etc...). These
suggestions are short and cautionary. The purpose is to suggest the prompt action to be taken by the driver when a
fault occurs. Suggestions are neither comprehensive nor alternative to the specifications contained in this Owner
Handbook, which you should read very carefully. If a fault is reported, always refer to the instructions given in this
section. The following illustrations are only examples of what can be displayed:

IMPORTANT The presence of warning lights may vary according to the engine version and fittings.
The warning lights come on in the following circumstances:
Warning Messagelight on panel on display
ENGINE COOLANT TOO HOT (red)
Turning the key to MAR the warning light on the dial turns on, but it should go off after about 4
seconds.
The warning light turns on together with the message when the engine is overheated. If the warn-
ing light comes on while the car is moving, stop the car and keep the engine running. Accelerate
slightly to favour a better circulation of coolant. If the warning light does not go out in the follow-
ing two or three minutes, stop the engine and contact a Fiat Dealership.
LOW BRAKE FLUID LEVEL AND/OR HANDBRAKE ENGAGED (red)
Turning the ignition key to MAR the warning light on the dial turns on, but it should go off after
about 4 seconds. The warning light turns on together with the message when the level of the brake
fluid in the reservoir falls below the minimum level, due to possible leak in the circuit and when the
handbrake is engaged.
x
u
If the warning light xturns on when travelling, check that the handbrake is not
engaged. If the warning light stays on with the message and the handbrake is not
applied, stop immediately and contact Fiat Dealership.WARNING

BATTERY NOT RECHARGING PROPERLY (red)
Turning the key to MAR the warning light on the dial turns on, but it should go out as soon as the
engine is started.
If the warning light stays on together with the message, contact a Fiat Dealership as soon as pos-
sible to prevent draining the battery.
SEAT BELTS NOT FASTENED (red)
(Only for right-hand drive versions)
The warning light on the dial turns on glowing steadily when, with ignition key at MAR, the dri-
ver’s seat belt is not fastened correctly.
AIRBAG FAILURE (red)
Turning the ignition key to MAR the warning light on the dial turns on, but it should go off after
about 4 seconds. The warning light will stay on to indicate an airbag failure.

<
WARNINGIf when turning the ignition key to MAR, the warning light ¬does not turn on or if
it stays on when travelling there could be a failure in safety systems; in this event
air bags or pretensioners could not trigger in case of impact or, in a minor number
of cases, they could trigger accidentally. Contact Fiat Dealership immediately to
have the system checked.
The failure of the warning light ¬(warning light off) is also indicated by the
flashing for more than the normal 4 seconds of the passenger’s front airbag
deactivated warning light
