In-dash Navigation System Features
Address Book – Allows you to save
your most frequently used destinations for
quick and easy routing.
Address Selection– Allows you to
search and route to a specific address
within your map region.
Intersection Selection– Allows you to
search and route to a specific intersection
within your map region.
POI (Point of Interest) Selection–
Allows you to search from and route to
a list of restaurants, hotels, banks and
other venues.
Route Guidance– Provides audible
and visual guidance instructions for each
driving maneuver along the planned
route.
Automatic Rerouting– Automatically
recalculates a new route to your destina-
tion if you miss a turn.
Previous Destination– Allows you
to view, and route to, your last 10
destinations.
HERE– Informs you of your current
location and the distance to the next and
last intersection.
HOME– Allows you to save your home
location so that you can route back to it
from your current location with the touch
of a button.
Detour– Allows you to enter the
following specific route criteria:
• Avoid Current Road• Avoid Next Road• Avoid Specific Road• Detour (no. of) Miles
Route View– Allows you to view an
entire route map or a maneuver-by-
maneuver map.The In-dash Navigation System uses an
on-board computer that interacts with the
GPS (Global Positioning System) satellites,
vehicle sensors and the Map Database
to give you the precise location of your
vehicle and guide you to your destination.
Vehicle location is gathered by a combina-
tion of 3 navigation calculations: GPS
signal, dead-reckoning and map-matching.
The
GPS signalis obtained through the
GPS receiver located on your Ford
Expedition. There are currently 24 earth-
orbiting GPS satellites that are constantly
transmitting time radio signals. The In-dash
Navigation System requires a minimum of
4 satellites at any given time to calculate
your vehicle’s position. GPS signals may
be temporarily lost when traveling in tun-
nels, mountains or areas with large build-
ings. The In-dash Navigation System will
continue to function as normal despite
the temporary GPS signal loss because
of dead-reckoning.
Dead-reckoningallows the In-dash
Navigation System to accurately predict
the vehicle position despite the degrada-
tion or loss of a GPS signal. A sensor on
the wheels of the Ford Expedition allows
the system to use the vehicle’s speed and
course to store a highly accurate image
of the path the vehicle has traveled. This
information, used in conjunction with
map-matching, enables the system to
provide precise guidance advice despite
the temporary loss of a GPS signal.
Map-matchingis the process of compar-
ing the vehicle’s position, heading,
distance and speed data produced by
the vehicle sensors against the data from
the map database, to determine the most
likely location of the vehicle relative to
the map.
The display menus that prompt you for
your destination selection are part of
the navigation software. The navigation
software is stored in the navigation
system and interacts with the map data-
base CD-ROM to guide you through
the process of selecting your destination.

ment, find restaurants, golf courses,
tourist attractions and other venues.
• For convenience, get instant directions
to the nearest ATM or bank, or short-
cuts to hotels, airports and shopping.
• The system even relieves some of
the headaches of driving, giving you
driving directions that account for
important details for the road you’re
on, including one-ways, turn restric-
tions, highway dividers, speed cate-
gories and other navigable attributes.

city/street, the next valid characters
will be lit. Use the cursor to navigate
through the letters and numbers. Press
LIST at anytime during the spelling
process to get a list of cities/streets
that start with the letters you have

the name yourself. Use the cursor to
navigate through the list and press the
cursor once you find your city/street

* The method to select a city name, a street name,
and an intersection name are the same.** Enter the turn-by-turn screen by pressing the
NAV button on your navigation system.
Map Database FAQs The In-dash Navigation System
• The Map Data CD originates from
a company called NAVTEQ, the same
company that creates and maintains
the Map Database.
• The Map Data interfaces with the rest
of the system via the CPU (Central
Processing Unit). The CPU compares
the information on the Map Data CD
with the vehicle’s current location as
determined by the GPS receiver.
The CPU then calculates the route,
travel time, guidance, etc.
• The Map Data CD contains navigable
road data for a specific region. This
data contains the road network for
each specific region and information
to allow the In-dash Navigation System
to give you accurate “turn-by-turn”
guidance to destinations. Navigable
road data includes information such
as city names, street names, as well
as up to 150 pieces of information
associated with each road segment.
Information such as one-way streets,
turn restrictions, speed limits, medians,
etc., are all included attributes in your
Map Data CD.• NAVTEQ continuously updates the
Map Database to provide additional
coverage, account for changes in the
road network, and changes in points
of interest. It is recommended that
map updates be purchased when
available to ensure you have the
most current information.
• Some map data on CDs in outlying
areas is not complete (missing some
navigable road data as described
above). If the system encounters such
data on your route it will give an audi-
tory warning, “The route to your desti-
nation contains roads with incomplete
data highlighted in yellow. Please
proceed with extra caution.” System
directions and street names in maneu-
ver mode will appear in yellow as well
as maneuvers on the planned route
list. When the route is displayed on the
map, the incomplete mapping portions
will also be highlighted in yellow.
