Your new diesel engine may feel, drive andfunction somewhat differently than agasoline engine. Therefore, it is veryimportant that you read and thoroughlyfamiliarize yourself and others operatingthe vehicle with this guide. There is aspecial procedure for turning off the dieselengine. See Starting a Diesel Engine(page 176). It is important to read andunderstand this material in order tomaintain the best service life for yourengine.

This manual may qualify the location of acomponent as left-hand side or right-handside. The side is determined when facingforward in the seat.

Service Data Recording
Service data recorders in your vehicle arecapable of collecting and storingdiagnostic information about your vehicle.This potentially includes information aboutthe performance or status of varioussystems and modules in the vehicle, suchas engine, throttle, steering or brakesystems. In order to properly diagnose andservice your vehicle, Ford Motor Company(Ford of Canada in Canada), and serviceand repair facilities may access or shareamong them vehicle diagnosticinformation received through a directconnection to your vehicle whendiagnosing or servicing your vehicle.Additionally, Ford Motor Company (Fordof Canada, in Canada) may, wherepermitted by law, use vehicle diagnosticinformation for vehicle improvement orwith other information we may have aboutyou, (for example, your contactinformation), to offer you products orservices that may interest you. Data maybe provided to our service providers suchas part suppliers that may help diagnosemalfunctions, and who are similarlyobligated to protect data. We retain thisdata only as long as necessary to performthese functions or to comply with law. Wemay provide information where requiredin response to official requests to lawenforcement or other governmentauthorities or third parties acting withlawful authority or court order, and suchinformation may be used in legalproceedings. Event Data Recording
This vehicle is equipped with an eventdata recorder. The main purpose of anevent data recorder is to record, incertain crash or near crash-likesituations, such as an airbagdeployment or hitting a road obstacle;this data will assist in understandinghow a vehicle’s systems performed.The event data recorder is designed torecord data related to vehicle dynamicsand safety systems for a short periodof time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The event data recorder in this vehicleis designed to record such data as:
•How various systems in your vehiclewere operating;
•Whether or not the driver andpassenger safety belts werebuckled/fastened;
•How far (if at all) the driver wasdepressing the accelerator and/orthe brake pedal; and

On Board Diagnostics Data LinkConnector
WARNING
Do not connect wireless plug-indevices to the data link connector.Unauthorized third parties could gainaccess to vehicle data and impair theperformance of safety related systems.Only allow repair facilities that follow ourservice and repair instructions to connecttheir equipment to the data link connector.
Your vehicle has an OBD Data LinkConnector (DLC) that is used inconjunction with a diagnostic scan tool forvehicle diagnostics, repairs andreprogramming services. Installing anaftermarket device that uses the DLCduring normal driving for purposes such asremote insurance company monitoring,transmission of vehicle data to otherdevices or entities, or altering theperformance of the vehicle, may causeinterference with or even damage tovehicle systems. We do not recommendor endorse the use of aftermarket plug-indevices unless approved by Ford. Thevehicle Warranty will not cover damagecaused by an aftermarket plug-in device.

Use of your Ford light truck as anambulance, without the Ford AmbulancePreparation Package voids the Ford NewVehicle Limited Warranty and may voidthe emissions warranties. In addition,ambulance usage without the preparationpackage could cause high underbodytemperatures, overpressurized fuel and arisk of spraying fuel which could lead tofires.
If your vehicle has the Ford AmbulancePreparation Package, it will be indicatedon the Safety Compliance CertificationLabel. The label is on the driver side doorpillar or on the rear edge of the driver door.You can determine whether theambulance manufacturer followed Ford’srecommendations by directly contactingthat manufacturer. The Ford AmbulancePreparation Package is only available oncertain diesel engine equipped vehicles.

Using mobile communications equipmentis becoming increasingly important in theconduct of business and personal affairs.However, you must not compromise yourown or others’ safety when using suchequipment. Mobile communications canenhance personal safety and security whenappropriately used, particularly inemergency situations. Safety must beparamount when using mobilecommunications equipment to avoidnegating these benefits. Mobilecommunication equipment includes, butis not limited to, cellular phones, pagers,portable email devices, text messagingdevices and portable two-way radios.

WARNINGS
Always make sure your child issecured properly in a device that isappropriate for their height, age andweight. Child safety restraints must bebought separately from your vehicle.Failure to follow these instructions andguidelines may result in an increased riskof serious injury or death to your child.
All children are shaped differently.The National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration and other safetyorganizations, base their recommendationsfor child restraints on probable child height,age and weight thresholds, or on theminimum requirements of the law. Werecommend that you check with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger Safety
WARNINGS
Technician (CPST) to make sure that youproperly install the child restraint in yourvehicle and that you consult yourpediatrician to make sure you have a childrestraint appropriate for your child. Tolocate a child restraint fitting station andCPST, contact NHTSA toll free at1-888-327-4236 or go towww.nhtsa.dot.gov. In Canada, contactTransport Canada toll free at1-800-333-0371 or go to www.tc.gc.ca tofind a Child Car Seat Clinic in your area.Failure to properly restrain children in childrestraints made especially for their height,age and weight, may result in an increasedrisk of serious injury or death to your child.
On hot days, the temperature insidethe vehicle can rise very quickly.Exposure of people or animals tothese high temperatures for even a shorttime can cause death or serious heatrelated injuries, including brain damage.Small children are particularly at risk.

Seatbelt Locking Modes
WARNINGS
After any vehicle crash, the seatbeltsystem at all passenger seatingpositions must be checked by anauthorized dealer to verify that theautomatic locking retractor feature forchild seats is still functioning properly. Inaddition, all seatbelts should be checkedfor proper function.
The belt and retractor must bereplaced if the seatbelt assemblyautomatic locking retractor featureor any other seatbelt function is notoperating properly when checked by anauthorized dealer. Failure to replace thebelt and retractor assembly could increasethe risk of injury in crashes.
All safety restraints in the vehicle arecombination lap and shoulder belts. Thedriver seatbelt has the first type of lockingmode, and the front outboard passengerand rear seat seatbelts have both types oflocking modes described as follows:
Vehicle Sensitive Mode
This is the normal retractor mode, whichallows free shoulder belt lengthadjustment to your movements andlocking in response to vehicle movement.For example, if the driver brakes suddenly,turns a corner sharply, or the vehiclereceives an impact of about 5 mph(8 km/h) or more, the combinationseatbelts will lock to help reduce forwardmovement of the driver and passengers.
In addition, the retractor is designed to lockif the webbing is pulled out too quickly. Ifthis occurs, let the belt retract slightly andpull webbing out again in a slow andcontrolled manner.
Automatic Locking Mode
In this mode, the shoulder belt isautomatically pre-locked. The belt will stillretract to remove any slack in the shoulderbelt. The automatic locking mode is notavailable on the driver seatbelt.
When to Use the Automatic LockingMode
Use this mode any time you install a childsafety seat in a front outboard passengerseating position in a Regular Cab,SuperCab, SuperCrew or any rear seatingposition of a SuperCab or SuperCrew. Theoptional front seat's center seatbelt has acinch mechanism. Children 12 years oldand under should be properly restrained ina rear seat whenever possible. See ChildSafety (page 17).
How to Use the Automatic LockingMode
Non-inflatable seatbelts
1. Buckle the combination lap andshoulder belt.
2. Grasp the shoulder portion and pulldownward until you pull the entire beltout.
3. Allow the belt to retract. As the beltretracts, you will hear a clicking sound.This indicates the seatbelt is now in theautomatic locking mode.

1. Insert the ignition key, turn the switchto OFF and hold in OFF while removingthe key.
2. When you switch the ignition on, thepassenger airbag off light illuminatesbriefly, momentarily shuts off and thenturns back on. This indicates that thepassenger airbag is deactivated.
Turning the Passenger Airbag Back On
WARNINGS
The seatbelts for the driver and rightfront passenger seating positions arespecifically designed to operatetogether with the airbags in certain typesof crashes. When you switch off yourairbag, you not only lose the protection ofthe airbag, you also may reduce theeffectiveness of your seatbelt system. Ifthe passenger does not meet therequirements stated in the NationalHighway Traffic Safety Administration orTransport Canada deactivation criteria,switching off the airbag can increase therisk of serious injury or death in a crash.
If your vehicle has rear seats, alwaystransport children who are 12 andyounger in the rear seat. Always useseatbelts and child restraints properly. Donot place a child in a rear facing infant seatin the front seat unless your vehicle isequipped with an airbag on and off switchand the passenger airbag is turned off. Thisis because the back of the infant seat istoo close to the inflating airbag and therisk of a fatal injury to the infant when theairbag inflates is substantial.
If the passenger airbag off light isilluminated when the passengerairbag switch is on and the ignitionis on, have the passenger airbag switchserviced immediately by a qualifiedtechnician.
The passenger airbag remains off until youturn it back on.
1. Insert the ignition key and turn theswitch to ON.
2. The passenger airbag off light willbriefly illuminate when you switch theignition on. This indicates that thepassenger airbag is operational.
The passenger side airbag should alwaysbe on (the passenger airbag off lightshould not be illuminated) unless thepassenger is a person who meets therequirements stated either in Category 1, 2or 3 of the National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration or Transport Canadadeactivation criteria which follows.
The vast majority of drivers and passengersare much safer with an airbag thanwithout. To do their job and reduce the riskof life threatening injuries, airbags mustopen with great force, and this force canpose a potentially deadly risk in somesituations, particularly when a front seatoccupant is not properly buckled up. Themost effective way to reduce the risk ofunnecessary airbag injuries withoutreducing the overall safety of the vehicleis to make sure all occupants are properlyrestrained in the vehicle, especially in the

GENERAL INFORMATION ON
RADIO FREQUENCIES
This device complies with Part 15 of theFCC Rules and with Industry Canadalicense-exempt RSS standard(s).Operation is subject to the following twoconditions: (1) This device may not causeharmful interference, and (2) This devicemust accept any interference received,including interference that may causeundesired operation.
Note:Changes or modifications notexpressively approved by the partyresponsible for compliance could void theuser's authority to operate the equipment.The term IC before the radio certificationnumber only signifies that Industry Canadatechnical specifications were met.
The typical operating range for yourtransmitter is approximately 33 feet (10meters). Vehicles with the remote startfeature will have a greater range. One ofthe following could cause a decrease inoperating range:
•weather conditions
•nearby radio towers
•structures around the vehicle
•other vehicles parked next to yourvehicle
Other short-distance radio transmitters,such as amateur radios, medicalequipment, wireless headphones, remotecontrols and alarm systems may operateon the same frequency as your remotecontrol. If other transmitters are operatingon those frequencies, you may not be ableto use your remote control. Using yourremote control near some types ofelectronic equipment, such as USB devices,
computers or cell phones can interfere withremote operation. Operating your remotecontrol near metal or metallic-finishedpurses, bags or clothing can interfere withremote operation. You can lock and unlockthe doors with the key.
Note:Make sure to lock your vehicle beforeleaving it unattended.
Note:If you are in range, the remote controlwill operate if you press any buttonunintentionally.
Intelligent Access
The system uses a radio frequency signalto communicate with your vehicle andauthorize your vehicle to unlock when oneof the following conditions are met:
•You touch the inside of the frontexterior door handle within 3 ft (1 m)proximity of an intelligent access key.
•You press the tailgate release button.
•You press a button on the transmitter.
If excessive radio frequency interferenceis present in the area or if the transmitterbattery is low, you may need tomechanically unlock your door. You canuse the mechanical key blade in yourintelligent access key to open the driverdoor in this situation. See RemoteControl (page 54).
REMOTE CONTROL
Integrated Keyhead Transmitter (If
Equipped)
Use the key blade to start your vehicle andunlock or lock the driver door from outsideyour vehicle. The transmitter portionfunctions as the remote control.
