GENERAL PROCEDURES
Power Steering System Flushing - 1.25L Duratec-1 6V

I. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional

container.
2. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) 4. Place the end of the power steering fluid

end of the hose from the power steering fluid
reservoir.
Disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir
return hose quick release coupling.
1. Press the power steering fluid reservoir return
hose quick release coupling locking tangs.
2. Disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir
return hose quick release coupling.
1. Disconnect the air cleanei- outlet pipe.
2. Disconnect the air cleaner inlet pipe.
3. Remove the retaining bolts.

7. Disconnect the spark plug wires. With the aid of another technician add 1 liter
of clean power steering fluid.
11. Wait 60 seconds to allow the starter motor
to cool.
*' ACAUTION:DO not continuously crank
the engine for more than
30 seconds, as
damage to the starter motor may result.
N0TE:When flushing the power steering system,
make sure that the power steering fluid in the
reservoir does not fall below the minimum mark.
While cranking the engine for a further 30
seconds turn the steering wheel from lock
to lock.
8. Using the special tool, remove the spark
plugs. With the aid of another technician add a
further
1 liter of clean power steering fluid.
13. When all the fluid has been used, turn the
ignition switch to the OFF position.
14. Using the special tool, install the spark
plugs.
9. N0TE:When filling the power steering fluid
reservoir, make sure that the power steering
fluid is clean and not agitated prior to use.
The fluid should be poured slowly into the
reservoir to minimize the possibility of
aeration. The fluid level should be checked
with the fluid cold.
15. Connect the spark plug wires.
Fill the power steering reservoir to the
MAX
mark with the appropriate fluid.

N0TE:Make sure that the collar on the hose
is inserted fully into the quick release
coupling.
Remove the blanking cap and connect the
power steering fluid reservoir return hose
( ' quick release coupling.
19. Connect the CKP sensor electrical
connector.

to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.

Using the special tool, disconnect the
steering gear to power steering fluid
reservoir return line from the power steering
fluid reservoir.
5. Using the special tool, remove the spark
Allow the fluid to drain into a container. plugs.
2. Place the end of the steering gear to power
steering fluid reservoir return line into a
container.

N0TE:When filling the power steering fluid
reservoir, make sure that the steering fluid
is clean and not agitated prior to use. The
steering fluid must be poured slowly into the
power steering fluid reservoir to minimize
the possibility of aeration. The steering fluid
level must be checked with the steering fluid
cold.
Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the
MAX mark with the appropriate steering fluid.

reservoir to minimize the possibility of aeration.
While cranking the engine turn the steering
wheel from lock to lock.
With the aid of another technician, add a
further
1 liter of clean steering fluid to the
power steering fluid reservoir.
11. When the clean steering fluid has been
added to the power steering fluid reservoir,
turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Using the special tool, connect the steering
gear to power steering fluid reservoir return
line to the power steering fluid reservoir.
N0TE:When filling the power steering fluid
reservoir, make sure that the steering fluid is clean
and not agitated prior to use. The
steering fluid

steering fluid level must be checked with
the steering fluid cold.
Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the
MAX mark with the appropriate steering fluid.

18. Start the engine and slowly turn the
steering wheel from lock to lock.
19. Switch OFF the engine.
20. N0TE:When filling the power steering fluid
reservoir, make sure that the steering fluid
is clean and not agitated prior to use. The
steering fluid must be poured slowly into
the power steering fluid reservoir to

Removal
2. Detach the power steering line from the
power steering pump mounting bracket.
3. Detach the power steering line bracket from
the cylinder head.
1. Detach the coolant expansion tank from the
wheelhouse assembly and position
it to one
side.
1. Remove the retaining bolt. 4. Remove the accessory drive belt.

either the power steering fluid cooler or the
power steering reservoir return hose.

hose quick release coupling locking tangs.
2. Disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir
return hose quick release coupling.
