It also illuminates momentarily when youswitch the ignition on to confirm the lampis functional. If it does not illuminate whenyou switch the ignition on, or begins toflash at any time, have the system checkedas soon as possible.
Low Washer Fluid Level WarningLamp
Illuminates when the washerfluid is low.
Oil Pressure Warning Lamp
Illuminates when you switch theignition on.
If it illuminates when the engineis running this indicates a malfunction.Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe todo so and switch the engine off. Check theengine oil level. If the oil level is sufficient, this indicates a system malfunction. Haveyour vehicle checked as soon as possible.
See Engine Oil Check (page 262).
Parking Lamps
Illuminate when you switch theparking lamps on.
Powertrain Fault
Illuminates when the systemdetects a powertrain fault. Haveyour vehicle checked as soon aspossible.
Service Engine Soon
If it illuminates when the engineis running this indicates amalfunction. The On BoardDiagnostics system has detected amalfunction of the vehicle emission controlsystem.
If it flashes, engine misfire may beoccurring. Increased exhaust gastemperatures could damage the catalyticconverter or other vehicle components.Drive in a moderate fashion (avoid heavyacceleration and deceleration) and haveyour vehicle immediately serviced.
It illuminates when you switch the ignitionon prior to engine start to check the bulband to indicate whether your vehicle isready for Inspection and Maintenance(I/M) testing.
Normally, it illuminates until the enginecranks and automatically turns off if nomalfunctions are present. However, if after15 seconds it flashes eight times, thisindicates that your vehicle is not ready forInspection and Maintenance (I/M) testing.
See Catalytic Converter (page 160).
Shift Indicator (If Equipped)
Illuminates to inform you thatshifting to a higher gear asindicated may give better fueleconomy and lower CO2emissions. It does not illuminate duringperiods of high acceleration, braking orwhen you press the clutch pedal.
Stability Control and TractionControl Indicator
Flashes during operation.
If it does not illuminate when youswitch the ignition on, or remainson when the engine is running, thisindicates a malfunction. Have your vehiclechecked as soon as possible.
Note:The system automatically turns offif there is a malfunction.

GENERAL INFORMATION
WARNING: Extended idling at highengine speeds can produce very hightemperatures in the engine and exhaustsystem, creating the risk of fire or otherdamage.
WARNING: Do not park, idle ordrive your vehicle on dry grass or otherdry ground cover. The emission systemheats up the engine compartment andexhaust system, creating the risk of fire.
WARNING: Do not start the enginein a closed garage or in other enclosedareas. Exhaust fumes are toxic. Alwaysopen the garage door before you startthe engine. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death.
WARNING: Exhaust leaks mayresult in entry of harmful and potentiallylethal fumes into the passengercompartment. If you smell exhaustfumes inside your vehicle, have yourvehicle inspected immediately. Do notdrive if you smell exhaust fumes.
The powertrain control system meets allCanadian interference-causing equipmentstandard requirements regulating theimpulse electrical field or radio noise.
Note:If you use your vehicle regularly abovethe altitude of 7,500 ft (2,286 m) and underthe temperature of -4.0°F (-20°C), it isrecommended to use the alternative engineoil. See Capacities and Specifications(page 337).
If you disconnect the battery, your vehiclemay exhibit some unusual drivingcharacteristics for approximately 6 mi(10 km) after you reconnect it. This isbecause the engine management systemmust realign itself with the engine. You candisregard any unusual drivingcharacteristics during this period.
When you start the engine, avoid pressingthe accelerator pedal before and duringoperation. Only use the accelerator pedalwhen you have difficulty starting theengine.
KEYLESS STARTING
Note:The keyless starting system may notfunction if the key is close to metal objectsor electronic devices such as cellularphones.
Note:A valid key must be located insideyour vehicle to switch the ignition on andstart the engine.
Ignition Modes
The keyless starting system has threemodes:
Off: Turns the ignition off.

ENGINE OIL CHECK
1.Make sure that your vehicle is on levelground.
2.Check the oil level before starting theengine, or switch the engine off afterwarm up and wait 15 minutes for theoil to drain into the oil pan.
Note:Checking the oil level too soon couldresult in an inaccurate reading.
3.Remove the dipstick and wipe it witha clean, lint-free cloth.
4.Reinstall the dipstick and make sure itis fully seated.
5.Remove the dipstick again to check theoil level.
Note: If the oil level is between themaximum and minimum marks, the oil levelis acceptable. Do not add oil.
6.If the oil level is at the minimum mark, immediately add oil.
7.Reinstall the dipstick. Make sure it isfully seated.
Note:The oil consumption of new enginesreaches its normal level after approximately3,000 mi (5,000 km).
Note:Increases in oil level can occur fromfrequent short trips that do not allow theengine to get to operating temperature, aswell as frequent idling or low speed drivingfor long periods of time.
Note:If oil levels are continuously notedabove the maximum mark, schedule a visitto your authorized dealer.
Adding Engine Oil
WARNING: Do not add engine oilwhen the engine is hot. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury.
WARNING: Do not remove the fillercap when the engine is running.
Do not use supplemental engine oiladditives because they are unnecessaryand could lead to engine damage that thevehicle warranty may not cover.
1.Clean the area surrounding the engineoil filler cap before you remove it.
2.Remove the engine oil filler cap.
3.Add engine oil that meets ourspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 337).
4.Reinstall the engine oil filler cap. Turnit clockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
Note: Do not add oil further than themaximum mark. Oil levels above themaximum mark may cause engine damage.
Note:Immediately soak up any oil spillagewith an absorbent cloth.
