Suppose your vehicle has a1400-pound (635-kilogram) cargoand luggage capacity. You andone of your friends decide to pickup cement from the local homeimprovement store to finish thatpatio you have been planning forthe past two years. Measuring theinside of the vehicle with the rearseat folded down, you have roomfor twelve 100-pound(45-kilogram) bags of cement. Doyou have enough load capacity totransport the cement to yourhome? If you and your friend eachweigh 220 pounds (99 kilograms),the calculation would be: 1400 -(2 x 220) - (12 x 100) = 1400 - 440- 1200 = - 240 pounds. No, you donot have enough cargo capacityto carry that much weight. Inmetric units, the calculation wouldbe: 635 kilograms - (2 x 99kilograms) - (12 x 45 kilograms) =635 - 198 - 540 = -103 kilograms. You will need to reduce the loadweight by at least 240 pounds(104 kilograms). If you removethree 100-pound (45-kilogram)cement bags, then the loadcalculation would be: 1400 - (2 x220) - (9 x 100) = 1400 - 440 -900 = 60 pounds. Now you havethe load capacity to transport thecement and your friend home. Inmetric units, the calculation wouldbe: 635 kilograms - (2 x 99kilograms) - (9 x 45 kilograms) =635 - 198 - 405 = 32 kilograms.
The above calculations alsoassume that the loads arepositioned in your vehicle in amanner that does not overloadthe front or the rear gross axleweight rating specified for yourvehicle on the Safety ComplianceCertification label.
ROOF RACK
ROOF RACK PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Read and follow themanufacturer's instructions when youare fitting a roof rack.
WARNING: When loading the roofracks, we recommend you evenlydistribute the load, as well as maintaina low center of gravity. Loaded vehicles, with higher centers of gravity, mayhandle differently than unloadedvehicles. Take extra precautions, suchas slower speeds and increased stoppingdistance, when driving a heavily loadedvehicle.
WARNING: Do not switch offstability control or use Sport or Trackmode when carrying a roof load. Thiscould lead to an increased risk of loss ofvehicle control, vehicle rollover, personalinjury or death.
Note:If you use a roof rack, the energyconsumption of your vehicle will be higherand you may experience different drivingcharacteristics.
Note:Never place loads directly on the roofpanel. The roof panel is not designed todirectly carry a load.

COLD WEATHER
PRECAUTIONS
The functional operation of somecomponents and systems can be affectedat temperatures below approximately-13°F (-25°C).
DRIVING ON SNOW AND ICE
WARNING: If you are driving inslippery conditions that require tirechains or cables, then it is critical thatyou drive cautiously. Keep speeds down, allow for longer stopping distances andavoid aggressive steering to reduce thechances of a loss of vehicle controlwhich can lead to serious injury or death. If the rear end of your vehicle slides whilecornering, steer in the direction of theslide until you regain control of yourvehicle.
On ice and snow, you should drive moreslowly than usual. Your vehicle has a fourwheel anti-lock brake system, do not pumpthe brake pedal. See Anti-Lock BrakingSystem Limitations (page 197).
BREAKING-IN
You need to break in new tires forapproximately 300 mi (480 km). Duringthis time, your vehicle may exhibit someunusual driving characteristics.
PERFORMANCE VEHICLE
PRECAUTIONS
•Verify correct tire pressures.
•Inspect wheels and tires for wear anddamage. Replace any damaged wheelsor tires.
•Do not operate your vehicle at highspeeds with more than two passengersor while carrying cargo.
•It is recommended to cross speedbumps or driveway inclines slowly andat a 45° angle to reduce the risk ofvehicle damage.
•Do not drive through car washes withthe vehicle heavily loaded withpassengers or luggage.
•Use only commercial car washeswithout mechanical tracks or handwash to avoid potential damage.
•Put your vehicle in stay in neutral modewhen entering an automatic car wash.See Selecting a Drive Mode (page260).
DRIVING IN SPECIAL
CONDITIONS
EMERGENCY MANEUVERS
In an unavoidable emergency where youmust make a sudden sharp maneuver, turnthe steering wheel only as rapidly and asfar as required to avoid the emergency.Apply smooth pressure to the acceleratorpedal or brake pedal as needed. Avoidabrupt steering, acceleration and brakingchanges. Abrupt changes could increasethe risk of vehicle roll over, loss of vehiclecontrol and personal injury. If possible, useany available road surfaces to bring yourvehicle under control.

DRIVING THROUGH MUD ANDWATER
Mud
Be cautious of sudden changes in vehiclespeed or direction when you are driving inmud. Even all-wheel drive and four-wheeldrive vehicles can lose traction in mud. Ifyour vehicle slides, steer in the direction ofthe slide until you regain control of yourvehicle. After driving through mud, cleanoff residue stuck to rotating driveshaftsand tires. Excess residue can cause animbalance that could damage drivecomponents.
Note:If your vehicle gets stuck in mud, itcould be rocked out by shifting betweenforward and reverse gears, stoppingbetween shifts in a steady pattern. Presslightly on the accelerator in each gear.
Water
If you must drive through water approachit cautiously. See Driving ThroughShallow Water (page 303).
DRIVING ON HILLY OR SLOPINGTERRAIN
Although natural obstacles could make itnecessary to travel diagonally up or downa hill or steep incline, you should try to drivestraight up or straight down.
Note:Avoid turning on steep slopes or hills.A danger lies in losing traction, slippingsideways and possible vehicle roll over.Whenever driving on a hill, determinebeforehand the route you can use. Do notdrive over the crest of a hill without seeingwhat conditions are on the other side. Donot drive in reverse over a hill without theaid of an observer.
Apply just enough power to the wheels toclimb the hill. Too much power causes thetires to slip, spin or lose traction, and youcould lose control of your vehicle. Whendescending a steep hill, do not descendthe hill in neutral. Avoid sudden hardbraking to keep the front wheels rolling andto maintain your vehicle's steering.
Note:Your vehicle has anti-lock brakes, apply the brakes steadily. Do not pump thebrakes.
DRIVING IN SAND
When driving over sand, try to keep all fourwheels on the most solid area of the trail.Shift to a lower gear and drive steadilythrough the terrain. Apply the acceleratorslowly and avoid excessive wheel slip. Donot drive your vehicle in deep sand for anextended period of time. This couldoverheat the system. A message appearsin the information display. See All-WheelDrive – Information Messages (page196).
Note:If your vehicle gets stuck in sand, itcould be rocked out by shifting betweenforward and reverse gears, stoppingbetween shifts in a steady pattern. Presslightly on the accelerator in each gear.
ELECTRIC VEHICLE
MAXIMIZING YOUR DRIVINGRANGE
Driving in Cold Weather
Keep your vehicle charged before headingout into cold weather.
Use the heated seats and steering wheelfor comfort along with moderate cabintemperature and fan settings to reduceenergy needed for climate control.
