heat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious consequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them inflated to the recommended pressure. Incorrect infla-tion, either too much or too little, results inunnecessary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned cor- rectly. Improper alignment can result fromhitting curbs or driving too fast over irregularsurfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tirewear and may also result in other problemsas well as greater fuel consumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reduced maintenancecosts, maintain your car in accordance withthe maintenance schedule in Section 5. Ifyou drive your car in severe conditions,more frequent maintenance is required (seeSection 5 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your car should be kept clean and free ofcorrosive materials. It is especially impor-tant that mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be allowed toaccumulate on the underside of the car. Thisextra weight can result in increased fuelconsumption and also contribute to corro-sion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unnecessary weight in your car. Weight is an enemy of good fueleconomy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than neces- sary. If you are waiting (and not in traffic),turn off your engine and restart only whenyou're ready to go. o Remember, your car does not require ex-
tended warm-up. As soon as the engine isrunning smoothly, you can drive away. Invery cold weather, however, give your en-gine a slightly longer warm-up period.
o Don't "lug" or "over-rev" the engine. Lugging is driving too slowly in too high a gearresulting in the engine bucking. If this hap-pens to you, shift to a lower gear. Over-revving is racing the engine beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting atthe recommended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is operated by the en-gine power so your fuel economy is reducedwhen you use it.

SMOOTH CORNERING
Avoid braking or gear changing in corners,
especially when roads are wet. Ideally, cornersshould always be taken under gentle accelera-tion. If you follow these suggestions, tire wearwill be held to a minimum.

WINTER MOTORING The onset of winter conditions subject motor
vehicles to greater operating demands. There-fore, the following suggestions will assist inmaintaining peak performance and reliabilityduring these periods: ZC170B1-E
Electrical System
Winter conditions impose severe demands uponvehicle electrical systems, particularly the charg-ing circuit. The battery condition and perfor-mance along with the alternator performanceand drive belt condition should be checked priorto the onset of winter. ZC170C1-E
Anti-freeze/Corrosion inhibitor The cooling system must always contain an Ethylene-Glycol based anti-freeze solution. Thesystem is filled during manufacture with solu-tion of the correct strength which should bechecked before the onset of winter and adjust- ed or changed as required. NOTE: The anti-freeze solution contains a corro- sion inhibitor to prevent degradation of thealuminum castings contained within theengine. Therefore, never, drain the systemand refill with water only. In addition, anti-freeze solution must ALWAYS be used in vehicles fitted with air conditioning,to prevent the heater matrix from freezing andsubsequently bursting with the refrigeration sys-tem in use.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
3-2 4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is
missing. If it is not missing, check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfac-tory, check for coolant leaking from the radia-tor, hoses or under the car. (If the air condi-tioning had been in use, it is normal for coldwater to be draining from it).
WARNING:Whilst the engine is running, keep hands andclothing away from moving parts such as thefan and drive belts to prevent injury.
5. If the water pump drive belt is broken or coolant is leaking out, stop the engine imme- diately and call the nearest Hyundai dealerfor assistance.
WARNING:Do not remove the radiator cap when theengine is hot since steam and boiling watermay be ejected from the radiator resulting inburns or scalding.
6. If the cause of the overheating cannot be found, wait until the engine temperature has returned to normal. Then, if coolant has beenlost, carefully remove the radiator cap andadd water to bring the fluid level in the reser-voir up to the base of the radiator fill opening.Fill the coolant expansion tank to the halfwaymark.
WARNING:Motor vehicle batteries contain sulphuric acidand emit hydrogen gas. Protective clothingshould be worn and care exercised to preventthe acid from coming into contact with skin orclothing and the vehicle. Naked lights shouldnot be permitted in the vicinity of the battery.Care should be exercised to prevent sparksoccurring during connection. If acid acciden-tally comes into contact with skin or eyes, theaffected area should immediately be flushedwith copious amounts of water and medicalassistance sought.
1. Ensure that the booster battery is 12 volt type.
If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, ensure that the two vehicles are nottouching.
2. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment in both vehicles.
3. Ensure that the engine of the vehicle provid- ing the jump start is running prior to connec-tion of the jump cables.
4. Connect the red jump cable to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery and the otherend to the positive (+) terminal of the dis-charged battery.
5. Attach the black jump cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery, and theother end to a ground point within the enginecompartment of the vehicle with the flat bat-tery. Do not connect to the negative batteryterminal of the flat battery since sparks maybe generated with the subsequent risk ofexplosion. 6. Raise the booster vehicle engine speed to
2,000 r.p.m. and start the engine of the vehi-cle with the flat battery.
7. Remove jump cables in the reverse order of installation (black cable first).
CAUTION:If the jump cable is incorrectly installed, dam-age to the vehicle electrical system may oc-cur, in particular the electronic componentssuch as the Fuel Injection system computerand the Automatic Transaxle computer. Thebattery must never be disconnected whilstthe engine is running. SD040A1-E IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATSIf the temperature gauge indicates overheating:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on,turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out from under the bonnetstop the engine. Do not open the bonnet untilthe coolant has stopped running or the steam-ing has stopped. If there is no visible loss ofcoolant and no steam, leave the engine run-ning and check to be sure the engine coolingfan is operating.If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.

SE040B1-E STAIN/SPOT REMOVAL Should tree sap, dead insects or tar prove to be difficult to remove from the paint film, turpentineor a proprietary paint cutting compound may beused. Ensure that the area to be cleaned is notrubbed intensively to prevent breaking throughthe colour coat and exposing the under coat. SE040C1-E POLISHING The exterior paint work should be polished with a proprietary wax polish when water no longercollects in bead form on the paint work. Theinstructions of the product manufacturer shouldbe adhered to. SE040E1-E BUMPER MAINTENANCEThe special material from which the bumpers are manufactured warrants special attention to pre-serve the appearance of the bumpers. Avoidcontact with battery electrolyte or brake fluid andensure that accidental spillages are immediatelyflushed with water.Do not use abrasive cleaning materials whichmay damage the bumpers.
SE040F1-E ACCIDENT REPAIRSIn the event of the body work sustaining damage, the following points should be noted prior torepairs being undertaken.If body panels are replaced or repaired, anticorrosion treatment must be applied to the repairarea. The product used must be compatible withthose used in manufacture. It is recommendedthat repairs are entrusted to a Hyundai dealer toensure that replacement parts used are of thesame high quality as those used in manufactureof the vehicle and that the correct repair methodsand materials will ensure adequate levels ofcorrosion protection and the continued validity ofthe Anti Perforation Warranty. SE050A1-E INTERIOR During the winter period, it is possible that the passenger compartment flooring may becomewet from damp footwear or quantities of snowadhering to footwear. The carpet should not beallowed to remain in this condition since thecarpet may begin to create musty smells and willpromote corrosion of the floor pan in addition tothe carpet and under felt beginning to rot. SE050C1-E INTERIOR VALETINGThe soft trim and carpets should be maintained with the regular use of a vacuum cleaner. Heavysoiling should be removed with a dry cleaningagent recommended for this purpose followingthe instructions of the product manufacturer.Paint thinner, solvents or other such cleaningmaterials should not be used since damage tothe upholstery may result.
SE050D1-E SEAT BELTSSeat belts should be cleaned only with a mild soap solution. Strong detergents, solvens orbleaches may damage the belt webbing andtherefore reduce the effectiveness of the belt.Belts which display signs of fraying, wear of cutshould be replaced. SE050E1-E WINDOWSA proprietary glass cleaner should be used to clean the inside of the windows. However, therear heated windscreen must only be cleanedusing a light horizontal cleaning action. Careshould be exercised to avoid the use of abrasivecleaners or contact with items of jewellery whichmay damage the heating elements.
Avoid subjecting the bumpers to high tempera-tures such as may be encountered in high bakepaint ovens.

Inspect the surface of hoses for evidence of heat and/or mechanical damage. Hard and brittle rub-ber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and exces-sive swelling indicate deterioration. Particularattention should be paid to examining those hosesurfaces nearest to high heat sources, such asthe exhaust manifold.Inspect the hose routing to assure that the hoses do not come in contact with any heat source,sharp edges or moving component which mightcause heat damage or mechanical wear. SG020B1-E DAILY OPERATING CHECKSThe following items should be checked on a daily basis or whenever the vehicle is refuelled, which-ever occurs sooner.

o Battery condition.
o Tyre condition and pressures.
o Operation and cleanliness of all lighting equip-
ment.
o Windscreen wiper and washer operation.

o Seat and seat belt adjustment and operation.
o Fluid leakage. The vehicle must not be driven if the daily oper- ating checks indicate that any item of equipmentrelated to the safety or roadworthiness of thevehicle is not functioning correctly. SG030A1-E ENGINE OILThe correct engine oil level is of paramount importance. An excessively high or low oil levelmay result in irreparable damage being sus-tained by the engine. The engine oil level must bechecked on a daily basis or whenever the vehicleis refuelled, whichever occurs sooner.In addition, it is imperative that only an approvedgrade and specification of oil is used to avoid thepossibility of serious engine damage and prema-ture wear. The use of "budget price" oil is a falseeconomy that must be avoided if the maximumreliability and useful life is to be obtained from thevehicle.
SG030B02GK-E Recommended Oil A multi grade oil having a specification which meets A.P.I. specification of SH, SG or above isrecommended. The oil viscosity should be se-lected according to the operating environment ofthe engine by means of the table shown below.The engine oil recommendations are complete inthemselves and the use of additives is neitherrequired nor recommended. The use of engineoil additives may result in invalidation of thevehicle warranty.

6-14 SG140B1-E Compressor Drive Belt The air conditioning compressor drive belt should be checked to ensure freedom from damage or excessive wear and correct tension. The belt tension is correct when the belt deflects by about0.3 inches (8 mm) when a force of 98 N is appliedto the belt halfway between the compressor andcrankshaft pulleys. Adjustment of the belt shouldbe entrusted to a Hyundai dealer.
SG140C2-E Checking the Refrigerant
1. Start the engine and run at idle for several
minutes with the refrigeration system running at the coldest setting.
2. If the air coming out of the in-dash vents is not cold, have the air conditioning system in-spected by your Hyundai dealer.
CAUTION:Running the air conditioning system for ex-tended periods of time with a low refrigerantlevel may damage the compressor. A/C

The brake pedal freeplay should be checked with the engine turned off. The pedal to floor clear-ance should be checked with the engine runningand a load of 490 N applied to the pedal. If eithervalue is incorrect, the necessary adjustmentshould be performed by a Hyundai dealer. Pedalto floor clearance: 1.97 in. (50 mm) SG190A1-E DRIVE BELTS The various engine drive belts must be checked for condition, tension and freedom from damageand excessive wear. The tension of a new beltmust be checked after thirty minutes runningfollowing fitment of the new belt to allow for theinitial belt stretch.

The fusible link prevents damage to the wiring harness in the event of an electrical systemmalfunction. Failure of a fusiblelink is indicativeof a serious overload condition having occurredand therefore the electrical system should bechecked by a Hyundai dealer before a replace-ment link is fitted. WARNING: Under no circumstances should a fusible linkbe replaced with anything other than a newlink of the same rating.
