B270A01A-AAT BRAKE PAD WEAR WARNING SOUND The front disc brake pads have wear indicators that should make a high-pitched squealing or scraping noise when new pads are needed. The sound may come and go or be heard all thetime when the vehicle is moving. It may also be heard when the brake pedal is pushed down firmly. Exces-sive rotor damage will result if the worn pads are not replaced. See your Hyundai dealer immediately.
B900A01A-GAT ACOUSTIC WARNING SOUND (If Installed) The acoustic warning chime sounds when the tail lights are on and the door in driver side is open. This prevents the battery from discharging when the car is left withthe tail lights on. The chime sounds until the tail lights are turned off.

Fuel Filter Warning Light-Red (Diesel Engine)
This light illuminates when the ignition switch is set to the "ON" position and goes off after the engine has started. Ifit lights up while the engine is running, it indicates that water has accumu- lated inside the fuel filter. If this hap-pens, remove the water from the fuel
filter. (Refer to "6-28 page")
B290A02TB-AAT Engine Coolant Tempera-
ture Indicator (If installed)
WARNING:
Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The engine cool-ant is under pressure and could erupt and cause severe burns. Wait until the engine is cool before re-moving the radiator cap.

Type A These indicators show the temperature of the engine coolant when the ignition switch is ON. Red indicator illuminates if the temperature of the engine coolantis above 120±3°C (248±5.5°F). Blue indicator Illuminates if the tem-
perature of the engine coolant is below60±3°C (140±5.5°F). If the red indicator illuminates, pull over and stop as soon as possible and turnoff the engine. Then open the hood and check the coolant level (See "If the engine overheats" on the page 3-4.) andthe water pump drive belt. If you sus- pect cooling system trouble, have your cooling system checked by a Hyundaidealer as soon as possible. Type B The indicator shows the temperature of the engine coolant when the ignitionswitch is ON. The red indicator illuminates if the tem- perature of the engine coolant is above117±3°C (240±5.5°F). Do not continue driving with an over- heated engine. If your vehicle over-heats, refer to “Overheating” in the In- dex. NOTE: If the red engine temperature indica- tor illuminates, it indicates overheat- ing that may damage the engine.

Check the suspension connections for
looseness or damage. Retighten to the specified torque. F070M01A-AAT
o Steering Gear Box, Linkage &
Boots/Lower arm Ball Joint
With the vehicle stopped and engine
off, check for excessive free-play inthe steering wheel. Check the linkage for bends or damage. Check the dust boots and ball joints for deterioration,cracks, or damage. Replace any dam- aged parts.

o Power Steering Pump, Belt
and Hoses
Check the power steering pump and
hoses for leakage and damage. Re- place any damaged or leaking parts immediately. Inspect the power steer- ing belt for evidence of cuts, cracks,excessive wear, oiliness and proper tension. Replace or adjust it if neces- sary.

o Brake Pads, Calipers and
Rotors
Check the pads for excessive wear,
discs for run out and wear, and cali-pers for fluid leakage.

o Exhaust Pipe and Muffler
Visually inspect the exhaust pipes,
muffler and hangers for cracks, dete-rioration, or damage. Start the engineand listen carefully for any exhaust gas leakage. Tighten connections or replace parts as necessary.

o Brake Hoses and Lines Visually check for proper installation, chafing, cracks, deterioration and any leakage. Replace any deteriorated or damaged parts immediately. F070G02A-AAT
o Brake Fluid Check brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. The level should be between "MIN" and "MAX" marks onthe side of the reservoir. Use only hydraulic brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 or DOT 4. F070H01A-AAT
o Rear Brake Drums/Linings
Parking Brake
Check the rear brake drums and lin- ings for scoring, burning, leaking fluid, broken parts, and excessive wear. Inspect the parking brake system in-cluding the parking brake lever and cables. For detailed service proce- dures, refer to the Shop Manual.

5) Avoid rapid acceleration and maxi-
mum throttle openings.
6) Avoid harsh braking during the first 100 miles of urban motoring or 1,000 miles of motorway driving to allow the friction facings of the brake padsand shoes to bed against the discs and drums properly.
7) No trailer towing should be under- taken during the running-in period.
B020B01FC-EAT (Diesel Engine) The longevity and performance of the vehicle are greatly affected by the care exercised during the first 1,000 miles ofmotoring. Because of modern manu- facturing techniques, rigid guidelines regarding maximum road speeds havebecome unnecessary. However, cer- tain precautions should be observed in order to obtain the best possible perfor-mance and useful life from the vehicle.
YB020A1-E BEFORE ENTERING THE VEHICLE
o Ensure that all windows, mirrors and
lamps are clean.
o Check condition of all tyres.
o Ensure that no fluid leaks are evi- dent.
o Ensure that the area around the ve- hicle is clear before driving off.
YB020B1-E AFTER ENTERING THE VEHICLE
o Ensure that all occupants fasten and correctly adjust seat belts.
o Ensure that seat and head restraint positions are adjusted for optimum safety, control and comfort.
o Adjust interior and exterior rear view mirrors.
o Verify correct operation of lamps,
horn and other electrical equipment.
o Ensure that warning lamps illumi- nate when ignition is turned on.
NOTE: Fluid levels such as engine oil, en- gine coolant, brake and windscreen washer fluid should be checked dailyor at each refuelling, whichever oc- curs sooner. B020A01FC-EAT RUNNING IN YOUR NEW HYUNDAI (Petrol Engine) The longevity and performance of the vehicle are greatly affected by the care exercised during the first 1,000 miles ofmotoring. B880A01A-EAT IMMOBILISER SYSTEM The immobiliser system is an anti-theft device, designed to deter vehicle theft.
B885B02O-EAT Keys
1) Do not race the engine without a load
(i.e revving the engine in neutral).
2) During the first 600 miles the maxi- mum engine speed should be re- stricted to 3,000 rpm and gradually increased thereafter. And while driv-ing, keep under three quarters of maximum vehicle speed.
3) Avoid prolonged constant speed op- eration. The internal components ofthe engine will become more quickly run in if the operation speed is variedduring the running in period.
4) Never allow the engine to labour. Use
the gearbox freely and avoid largethrottle openings when the engine speed is below 1,500 rpm.

o When starting the engine, do not use the key with other immobiliser keys around. Otherwise the en- gine may not start or may stop soon after it starts.Keep each keys separately not to have any malfunction after you receive your new vehicle.
o Do not put metal accessories near the key or ignition switch.The engine may not start for themetal accessories may interrupt the transponder signal from nor- mally transmitting.

Your Hyundai's speedometer is cali- brated in miles per hour or kilometers per hour.
A Type B Type
SB210S1-E BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATOR The front brake disc pads are fitted with an audible wear indicator which will cause a high pitched noise to be emit- ted when the remaining amount of fric-tion lining is below the specified value. When the wear indicator is heard, the brake pads should be replaced withoutdelay to avoid damage occurring to the brake discs and a severe reduction in braking efficiency.

SC130A1-E OVERDRIVE SWITCH
The overdrive switch prevents the transaxle upshifting higher than third gear when the switch is turned "OFF".The transaxle will start from rest in first gear and upshift to second and third gear depending upon the roadspeedand throttle opening but will not upshift to fourth gear. When the overdrive switch is turned "ON", the transaxlewill start from rest in first gear and will upshift, depending upon roadspeed and throttle opening to second, thirdand fourth gear. Therefore, when the overdrive switch is turned "OFF", the transaxle performs as a three speedunit and the overdrive warning light located in the instrument cluster will be illuminated. When the overdrive switch is turned "ON", the transaxle functionsas a fully automatic four speed unit with the maximum fuel economy po- tential of the vehicle being realized. SC140A1-E EFFECTIVE BRAKING Braking system performance and fric- tion material life are greatly affected by the driving style adopted. The follow- ing suggestions are made to assist inachieving the best results from the braking system.
o Anticipate the road and conditions
ahead in order that heavy braking may be avoided.
o When descending long gradients, use the engine to assist in retardingthe vehicle to minimize the possibil-ity of brake fade occurring.
o When trailer towing, ensure that the
trailer brakes function correctly anduse engine braking to assist the vehicle braking system. o Use only genuine Hyundai replace-
ment brake pads and shoes to en- sure consistent friction characteris-tics and wear rates.
o After driving through deep water
(e.g. fording), the brakes may be-come wet and performance reduced. Always check brake efficiency after emerging from the water and dry thebrakes by lightly depressing the brake pedal several times whilst driving slowly.
o Apply the parking brake only when the vehicle is at rest.
o Since the power assistance pro- vided by the brake servo is derived from the engine, coasting with the engine turned off or towing of thevehicle with the engine turned off will result in greatly increased pedal pressures being required to stop thevehicle.
o Do not hold the vehicle on an incline
with the accelerator pedal. This cancause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or park- ing brake.
