If engine turns over normally
but does not start
1.Check fuel level.
2.With the ignition switch in theLOCK/ OFF position, check all connectors at ignition, coil and
spark plugs. Reconnect any that
may be disconnected or loose.
3.Check the fuel line in the engine compartment.
4.If the engine still does not start, we recommend that you call an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer. Connect cables in numerical order
and disconnect in reverse order.
Jump starting
Jump starting can be dangerous if
done incorrectly. Therefore, to avoid
harm to yourself or damage to your
vehicle or battery, follow the jump
starting procedures. If in doubt, we
strongly recommend that you have a
competent technician or towing serv-
ice jump start your vehicle.

5.Start the engine of the vehicle withthe booster battery and let it run at
2,000 rpm, then start the engine of
the vehicle with the discharged
battery.
If the cause of your battery discharg-
ing is not apparent, we recommendthat the system be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Push-starting
Your manual transmission-equipped
vehicle should not be push-startedbecause it might damage the emis-sion control system. If your temperature gauge indicates
overheating, you experience a loss
of power, or hear loud pinging or
knocking, the engine is probably too
hot. If this happens, you should:
1.Pull off the road and stop as soon
as it is safe to do so.
2.Place the shift lever in neutral and set the parking brake. If the air con-
ditioning is on, turn it off.
3.If engine coolant is running out under the vehicle or steam is com-ing out from the hood, stop the
engine. Do not open the hood until
the coolant has stopped running
or the steaming has stopped. If
there is no visible loss of engine
coolant and no steam, leave the
engine running and check to be
sure the engine cooling fan is oper-
ating. If the fan is not running, turn
the engine off.

Never tow a vehicle to start it
because the sudden surge for-
ward when the engine startscould cause a collision with the
tow vehicle.

To prevent the jack from “rattling”
while the vehicle is in motion, store it
properly and fasten the jack screw
fully.
Follow jacking instructions to reduce

Changing tires
Never attempt vehicle repairs
in the traffic lanes of a public
road or highway.
Always move the vehicle com-
pletely off the road and onto
the shoulder before trying to
change a tire. The jack should
be used on firm level ground.
If you cannot find a firm level
place off the road, call a tow-
ing service company for

Your spare tire is stored underneath
your vehicle, directly below the cargoarea.
To remove the spare tire:
1.Open the rear doors.
2.Find the plastic hex bolt cover and
remove the cover. 3.Using the wheel lug nut wrench,
unscrew the bolts counter-clock-
wise. Be careful not to drop the
carrier rapidly.
4.After the spare tire carrier reaches the ground, remove the spare tire
outside from the carrier.

The compact spare tire should notbe used on any other wheels, nor
should standard tires, snow tires,
wheel covers or trim rings be used
with the compact spare wheel. Ifsuch use is attempted, damage tothese items or other car compo-
nents may occur.
Do not use more than one compact spare tire at a time.
Do not tow a trailer while the com- pact spare tire is installed.Towing service
If emergency towing is necessary,
we recommend having it done by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer or a
commercial tow-truck service.
Proper lifting and towing procedures
are necessary to prevent damage to
the vehicle. The use of wheel dolliesor flatbed is recommended. On 2WD vehicles, it is acceptable to
tow the vehicle with the rear wheels
on the ground (without dollies) and
the front wheels off the ground.
If any of the loaded wheels or sus- pension components are damaged
or the vehicle is being towed with the
front wheels on the ground, use a
towing dolly under the front wheels.
When being towed by a commercial
tow truck and wheel dollies are not
used, the front of the vehicle should
always be lifted, not the rear.

When towing your vehicle in an emergency without wheel dollies :
1.Set the ignition switch in the ACCposition.
2.Place the transmission shift lever in N (Neutral).
3.Release the parking brake.Removable towing hook (if equipped)
Front towing hook
1.Remove the towing hook from the tool store of front passenger’s door
step side.
2.Remove the hole cover pressing the upper part of the cover on the
front bumper.
3.Install the towing hook by turning it clockwise into the hole until it isfully secured.
4.Remove the towing hook and install the cover after use.

Emergency towing
If towing is necessary, we recom-
mend you to have it done by an
authorized HYUNDAI dealer or a
commercial tow truck service.If towing service is not available in an
emergency, your vehicle may be
temporarily towed using a cable or
chain secured to the emergency tow-ing hook under the front (or rear) of
the vehicle. Use extreme caution
when towing the vehicle. A driver
must be in the vehicle to steer it and
operate the brakes.
Towing in this manner may be done
only on hard-surfaced roads for a
short distance and at low speed.
Also, the wheels, axles, power train,
steering and brakes must all be ingood condition.
Do not use the towing hooks to pull
a vehicle out of mud, sand or other
conditions from which the vehicle
cannot be driven out under its own
power.
Avoid towing a vehicle heavier than the vehicle doing the towing.
The drivers of both vehicles should communicate with each other fre-
quently. Before emergency towing, check
that the hook is not broken or dam-aged.
Fasten the towing cable or chain securely to the hook.
Do not jerk the hook. Apply steady and even force.
To avoid damaging the hook, do not pull from the side or at a verti-
cal angle. Always pull straightahead.

Use a towing strap less than 5 m(16 feet) long. Attach a white or red cloth (about 30 cm (12 inches)
wide) in the middle of the strap for
easy visibility.
Drive carefully so that the towing strap is not loosened during tow-ing.
Emergency towing precautions
Turn the ignition switch to ACC sothe steering wheel isn’t locked.
Place the transmission shift lever in N (Neutral).
Release the parking brake.
Press the brake pedal with more force than normal since you will
have reduced brake performance.
More steering effort will be required because the power steer-
ing system will be disabled.
If you are driving down a long hill, the brakes may overheat and brake
performance will be reduced. Stop
often and let the brakes cool off.
Use extreme caution when tow-
ing the vehicle.
Avoid sudden starts or erratic
driving maneuvers which
would place excessive stress
on the emergency towing
hook and towing cable or
chain. The hook and towing
cable or chain may break and
cause serious injury or dam-
age.
If the disabled vehicle is
unable to be moved, do not
forcibly continue the towing.
Contact an authorized
HYUNDAI dealer or a commer-
cial tow truck service for
assistance.
Tow the vehicle as straight
ahead as possible.
Keep away from the vehicle
during towing.

If there is small fire and you know
how to use the fire extinguisher, take
the following steps carefully. ❈Location of a fire extinguisher

1.Pull the pin at the top of the extin- guisher that keeps the handle frombeing accidentally pressed.
2.Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire.
3.Stand approximately 2.5 m (8 ft) away from the fire and squeeze the
handle to discharge the extinguish-
er. If you release the handle, the
discharge will stop.
4.Sweep the nozzle back and forth at the base of the fire. After the fire
appears to be out, watch it careful-
ly since it may re-ignite.
