Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The engine coolantis under pressure and could erupt and cause severe burns. Wait until the engine is cool before removingthe radiator cap.
B270A01A-AAT BRAKE PAD WEAR WARNING SOUND The front disc brake pads have wear indicators that should make a high-pitched squealing or scraping noise when new pads are needed. The sound may come and go or be heard all thetime when the vehicle is moving. It may also be heard when the brake pedal is pushed down firmly. Excessive rotordamage will result if the worn pads are not replaced. See your Hyundai dealer immediately.

Fuel Filter Warning Light (Diesel Engine)
This light illuminates when the engine has started and goes off after a fewseconds. If it lights up while the engine is running, it indicates that water has accumulated inside the fuel filter. If thishappens, remove the water from the fuel filter. (Refer to "6-27 page")

The needle on the engine coolant tem- perature gauge should stay in the nor-mal range. If it moves across the dial to "H" (Hot), pull over and stop as soon as possible and turn off the engine. Thenopen the bonnet and, after the engine has cooled, check the coolant level and the water pump drive belt. If you sus-pect cooling system trouble, have your cooling system checked by a Hyundai dealer as soon as possible.
B330A02A-AAT Tachometer The tachometer registers the speed of your engine in revolutions per minute (rpm).
OCM015014L CAUTION:
The engine should not be raced to such a speed that the needle entersthe red zone on the tachometer face. This can cause severe engine dam- age and may void your warranty.

23WINTER DRIVING
C160A01A-DAT The more severe weather conditions of winter result in greater wear and other problems. To minimise the problems of winter driving, you should follow thesesuggestions: C160C01A-AAT Use High Quality Ethylene Glycol Coolant Your Hyundai is delivered with high quality ethylene glycol coolant in thecooling system. It is the only type of coolant that should be used because it helps prevent corrosion in the coolingsystem, lubricates the water pump and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or replenish your coolant in accordancewith the maintenance schedule in Sec- tion 5. Before winter, have your coolant tested to assure that its freezing pointis sufficient for the temperatures antici- pated during the winter.
C160B01A-DAT Snowy or Icy Conditions To drive your vehicle in deep snow, it may be necessary to use snow tyres or to install tyre chains on your tyres. If snow tyres are needed, it is necessary to select tyres equivalent in size and type to the original equipment tyres.Failure to do so may adversely affect the safety and handling of your car. Furthermore, speeding, rapid accelera-tion, sudden brake applications, and sharp turns are potentially very hazard- ous practices. During deceleration, use engine brak-ing to the fullest extent. Sudden brakeapplications on snowy or icy roads may cause skids to occur. You need to keep sufficient distance between the vehiclein operation in front and your vehicle. Also, apply the brake gently. It should be noted that installing tyre chains onthe tyre will provide a greater driving force, but will not prevent side skids. NOTE: Tyre chains are not legal in all states. Check state laws before fitting tyre chains.
C160D01A-DAT Check Battery and Cables Winter puts additional burdens on the battery and charging system. Visually inspect the battery and cables as de-scribed in Section 6. The level of charge in your battery can be checked by your Hyundai dealer or a service station.

C160H01A-DAT Use Approved Anti-Freeze in Window Washer System To keep the water in the window washer system from freezing, add an approvedanti-freeze solution in accordance with instructions on the container. Window washer anti-freeze is available fromHyundai dealers and most auto parts outlets. Do not use engine coolant or other types of anti-freeze as these maydamage the paint finish.
C160G01A-DAT To Keep Locks from Freezing To keep the locks from freezing, squirt an approved de-icer fluid or glycerineinto the key opening. If a lock is cov- ered with ice, squirt it with an approved de-icing fluid to remove the ice. If thelock is frozen internally, you may be able to thaw it out by using a heated key. Handle the heated key with care toavoid injury. NOTE: The proper temperature for using the immobiliser key is from -40°C to 80°C. If you heat the immobiliser key over 80°C to open a frozen lock, itmay cause damage to the transpon- der in its head.
C160E01A-AAT Change to "Winter Weight" Oil if Necessary In some climates it is recommended that a lower viscosity "winter weight" oilbe used during cold weather. See Sec- tion 9 for recommendations. If you aren't sure what weight oil you should use,consult your Hyundai dealer. C160F01A-AAT Check Spark Plugs and Ignition System Inspect your spark plugs as described in Section 6 and replace them if neces- sary. Also check all ignition wiring and components to be sure they are notcracked, worn or damaged in any way.

C160J01A-AAT Don't Let Ice and Snow Accumu- late Underneath Under some conditions, snow and ice can build up under the fenders andinterfere with the steering. When driving in severe winter conditions where this may happen, you should periodicallycheck underneath the car to be sure the movement of the front wheels and the steering components are not obstructed. C160K01A-DAT Carry Emergency Equipment Depending on the severity of the weather where you drive your car, you should carry appropriate emergency equip-ment. Some of the items you may want to carry include tyre chains, tow straps or chains, flashlight, emergency flares,sand, a shovel, jumper cables, a win- dow scraper, gloves, ground cloth, cov- eralls, a blanket, etc.HIGHER SPEED MOTORING
C170A01A-DAT Pre-Trip Inspections
1. Tyres: Adjust the tyre inflation pressures tospecification. Low tyre inflation pres- sures will result in overheating and possible failure of the tyres. Avoid us-ing worn or damaged tyres which may result in reduced traction or tyre failure. NOTE: Never exceed the maximum tyre in- flation pressure shown on the tyres.
2. Fuel, engine coolant and engine oil: High speed travel consumes more fuel than urban motoring. Do not forget tocheck both engine coolant and engine oil.
3. Drive belt: A loose or damaged drive belt may result in overheating of the engine.
C160I01A-AAT Don't Let Your Parking Brake Freeze Under some conditions your parking brake can freeze in the engaged posi-tion. This is most likely to happen when there is an accumulation of snow or ice around or near the rear brakes or if thebrakes are wet. If there is a risk the parking brake may freeze, apply it only temporarily while you put the gearselector lever in "P" (automatic) or in first or reverse gear (manual transaxle) and block the rear wheels so the carcannot roll. Then release the parking brake.

CAUTION:
o Never connect a trailer brake sys- tem directly to the vehicle brake system.
o When towing a trailer on steep grades (in excess of 6%) pay closeattention to the engine coolant temperature gauge to ensure the engine does not overheat. If theneedle of the coolant temperature gauge moves across the dial to- wards "H" (HOT), pull over andstop as soon as it is safe to do so, and allow the engine to idle until it cools down. You may proceedonce the engine has cooled suffi- ciently.
! C190D02A-DAT Safety Chains Should the towbar connection between your car and the trailer or vehicle youare towing fail, the trailer or vehicle could wander dangerously across other lanes of traffic and ultimately collidewith another vehicle. To eliminate this potentially dangerous situation, safety chains, attached be-tween your car and the trailer or towed vehicle, are required in most states.
C190C02S-DAT Trailer Brakes If your trailer is equipped with a braking system, make sure it conforms to fed-eral and/or local regulations and that it is properly installed and operating cor- rectly. NOTE: If you tow a trailer or vehicle, your car will require more frequent main-tenance due to the additional load. See "Maintenance Under Severe Us- age Conditions" on page 5-6.

IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
4. Check to see if the water pump drivebelt is missing. If it is not missing, check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfactory, check for coolant leaking from theradiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use, it is normal for cold water to bedraining from it when you stop).
D030A02TB-DAT If your temperature gauge indicates overheating, you experience a loss of power, or hear loud pinging or knocking, the engine is probably too hot. If thishappens to you, you should:
1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as
it is safe to do so.
2. Place the gear selector lever in "P"
(automatic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off.
3. If coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out from underthe bonnet, stop the engine. Do not open the bonnet until the coolant hasstopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of coolant and no steam, leave theengine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan is not running, turn the engineoff. WARNING:
While the engine is running, keephands and clothing away from mov-ing parts such as the fan and drive belts to prevent injury.
5. Start the engine in the car with the
discharged battery using the normal starting procedure. After the enginestarts, leave the jumper cables con- nected and let the engine run at fast idle or about 2000 rpm for severalminutes.
6. Carefully remove the jumper cables
in the reverse order of attachment.
If you do not know why your batterybecame discharged (because the lightswere left on, etc.), have the charging system checked by your Hyundai dealer.

5. If the water pump drive belt is broken
or coolant is leaking out, stop the engine immediately and call the near- est Hyundai dealer for assistance. WARNING:
Do not remove the radiator cap whenthe engine is hot. This can allowcoolant to be blown out of the open- ing and cause serious burns.
!WARNING (DIESEL ONLY):
Never work on injection system with engine running or within 30 secondsafter shutting off engine. High pres- sure pump, rail, injectors and high pressure pipes are subject to highpressure even after the engine stopped. The fuel jet produced by fuel leaks may cause serious injury,if it touch the body. People using pacemakers should not move than 30cm closer to the ECU or wiringharness within the engine room while engine is running, since the high currents in the Common Rail systemproduce considerable magnetic fields. 6. If you cannot find the cause of the
overheating, wait until the engine temperature has returned to normal. Then, if coolant has been lost, care- fully add coolant to the reservoir(page 6-10) to bring the fluid level in the reservoir up to the halfway mark.
7. Proceed with caution, keeping alert for further signs of overheating. Ifoverheating happens again, call a Hyundai dealer for assistance.
CAUTION:
Serious loss of coolant indicatesthere is a leak in the cooling system and this should be checked as soon as possible by a Hyundai dealer.
!
SPARE TYRE
D040A01CM-DAT TEMPORARY SPARE TYRE The following instructions for the tem- porary spare tyre should be observed:
1. Check inflation pressure as soon as possible after installing the spare tyre, and adjust to the specified pres- sure. The tyre pressure should be periodically checked and maintainedat the specified pressure while the tyre is stored.

cifically designed for your car, it should not be used on any other vehicle.
