ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM
When there is an open circuit on MIL circuit, the ECM c
annot warn the driver by lighting up MIL when there is
malfunction on engine control system.
Therefore, when electrical controlled throttle and part of ECM related diagnoses are continuously detected as
NG for 5 trips, ECM warns the driver that engine cont rol system malfunctions and MIL circuit is open by means
of operating fail-safe function.
The fail-safe function also operates when above diagnos es except MIL circuit are detected and demands the
driver to repair the malfunction.
MIL Flashing Without DTC
When any SRT codes are not set, MIL may fl ash without DTC. For the details, refer to EC-633, "Emission-
related Diagnostic Information".
HOW TO SWITCH DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE
NOTE:
It is better to count the ti me accurately with a clock.
It is impossible to switch the di agnostic mode when an accelerator pedal position sensor circuit has
a malfunction.
Always ECM returns to Diagnostic Test Mode I after ignition switch is turned OFF.
How to Set Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-diagnostic Results)
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds.
a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the MIL starts
blinking.

Mode I Ignition switch in ON position
Engine stopped BULB CHECK This function checks the MIL bulb for damage (blown, open
circuit, etc.).
If the MIL does not come on, check MIL circuit.
Engine running MALFUNCTION WARNING This is a usual driving condition. When a malfunction is de-
tected twice in two consecutive driving cycles (two trip de-
tection logic), the MIL will light up to inform the driver that a
malfunction has been detected.
The following malfunctions will light up or blink the MIL in
the 1st trip.
Misfire (Possible three way catalyst damage)
One trip detection diagnoses
Mode II Ignition switch in ON position

8. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the MIL stops
blinking and turned ON.
9. Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the MIL turned ON.
10. Start engine and let it idle.
11. Wait 20 seconds.
12. Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure that idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifications.
13. If idle speed and ignition timing are not within the specification, Idle Air Volume Learning will not be carried out successfully. In this case, find the cause of t he incident by referring to the Diagnostic Procedure below.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
If idle air volume learning cannot be performed successfully, proceed as follows:
1. Check that throttle val ve is fully closed.
2. Check PCV valve operation.
3. Check that downstream of throttl e valve is free from air leakage.
4. When the above three items check out OK, engine component parts and their installation condi-
tion are questionable. Check and elim inate the cause of the incident.
It is useful to perform EC-709

SQUEAK AND RATTLE TROUBLE DIAGNOSES
Work FlowINFOID:0000000001328056
CUSTOMER INTERVIEW
Interview the customer if possible, to determine the conditions that exist when the noise occurs. Use the Diag-
nostic Worksheet during the interv iew to document the facts and conditions when the noise occurs and any
customer's comments; refer to EI-9, "
Diagnostic Worksheet". This information is necessary to duplicate the
conditions that exist when the noise occurs.
The customer may not be able to provide a detailed description or the location of the noise. Attempt to obtain all the facts and conditions that exist when the noise occurs (or does not occur).
If there is more than one noise in the vehicle, be sure to diagnose and repair the noise that the customer is
concerned about. This can be accomplished by test driving the vehicle with the customer.
After identifying the type of noise, isolate the noise in terms of its characteristics. The noise characteristics
are provided so the customer, service adviser and technician are all speaking the same language when
defining the noise.
Squeak –(Like tennis shoes on a clean floor)
Squeak characteristics include the light contact/fast movement/brought on by road conditions/hard surfaces
= higher pitch noise/softer surfaces = lower pitch noises/edge to surface = chirping
Creak –(Like walking on an old wooden floor)
Creak characteristics include firm contact/slow mo vement/twisting with a rotational movement/pitch depen-
dent on materials/often brought on by activity.
Rattle – (Like shaking a baby rattle)
Rattle characteristics include the fast repeated contac t/vibration or similar movement/loose parts/missing
clip or fastener/incorrect clearance.
Knock – (Like a knock on a door)
Knock characteristics include hollow sounding/someti mes repeating/often brought on by driver action.
Tick –(Like a clock second hand) Tick characteristics include gentle contacting of li ght materials/loose components/can be caused by driver
action or road conditions.
Thump –(Heavy, muffled knock noise) Thump characteristics include softer k nock/dead sound often brought on by activity.
Buzz – (Like a bumble bee)
Buzz characteristics include high frequency rattle/firm contact.
Often the degree of acceptable noise level will vary depending upon the person. A noise that you may judge as acceptable may be very irritating to the customer.
Weather conditions, especially humidity and temperat ure, may have a great effect on noise level.
DUPLICATE THE NOISE AND TEST DRIVE
If possible, drive the vehicle with the customer until the noise is duplicated. Note any additional information on
the Diagnostic Worksheet regarding the conditions or lo cation of the noise. This information can be used to
duplicate the same conditions when you confirm the repair.

NOTE:
When only timing chain (primary) is removed, rocker cover does not need to be removed.
18. Obtain No. 1 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke as follows: NOTE:
When timing chain is not removed/installed, this step is not required.
a. Rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise to align timing mark (grooved line without color) with timing indicator.
b. Make sure that intake and exhaust cam noses on No. 1 cylinder (engine front side of right bank) are located as shown in the fig-
ure.
If not, turn crankshaft one revolution (360 degrees) and alignas shown in the figure.
NOTE:
When only timing chain (primary) is removed, rocker cover does
not need to be removed. To make sure that No. 1 cylinder is at
its compression TDC, remove front timing chain case first. Then
check mating marks on camshaft sprockets. Refer to EM-65,
"Removal and Installation".
19. Remove crankshaft pulley as follows:
a. Remove rear cover plate (2WD models) or star ter motor (AWD models) and set ring gear stopper (SST).
Refer to EM-30, "

d. Put a paint mark on crankshaft pulley aligning with angle mark on crankshaft pulley bolt.
e. Further tighten by 90 degrees. (Angle tightening) Check the tightening angle by referencing to the notches. The
angle between two notches is 90 degrees.
10. Rotate crankshaft pulley in normal direction (clock wise when viewed from front) to confirm it turns
smoothly.
11. For the following operations, perform steps in the reverse order of removal. NOTE:
If hydraulic pressure inside chain tensioner drops after removal/installation, slack in the guide may gener-
ate a pounding noise during and just after engine start. However, this is normal. Noise will stop after
hydraulic pressure rises.
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
Inspection for Leaks
The followings are procedures for checking fluids leak, lubricates leak. Before starting engine, check oil/fluid levels incl uding engine coolant and engine oil. If less than required
quantity, fill to the specified level. Refer to GI-44, "
Recommended Chemical Product and Sealant".
Use procedure below to check for fuel leakage.
- Turn ignition switch “ON” (with engine stopped). With fuel pressure applied to fuel piping, check for fuel leak-
age at connection points.
- Start engine. With engine speed increased, che ck again for fuel leakage at connection points.
Run engine to check for unusual noise and vibration.
NOTE:
If hydraulic pressure inside chain tensioner drops af ter removal/installation, slack in guide may generate a
pounding noise during and just after the engine start. However, this does not indicate an unusualness. Noise
will stop after hydraulic pressure rises.
Warm up engine thoroughly to make sure there is no leakage of fuel, or any oil/fluids including engine oil and engine coolant.
Bleed air from lines and hoses of applic able lines, such as in cooling system.

gasket for removal.
CAUTION:
Shaft is internally jointed wi th camshaft sprocket (INT) cen-
ter hole. When removing, keep it horizontal until it is com-
pletely disconnected.
19. Remove collared O-ring from front timing chain case (left and right side).
20. Remove rocker covers (right and left). Refer to EM-51, "
Component".
21. Remove oil pans (lower and upper). Refer to EM-30, "
Component (2WD Models)".
22. Obtain No. 1 cylinder at TDC of its compression stroke as follows:
23. Remove crankshaft pulley as follows:
a. Remove rear cover plate (2WD models) or starter motor (AWD models) and set the ring gear stopper (SST). Refer to EM-30, "

INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION
Inspection for Leaks
The following are procedures for checking fluids leak, lubricates leak.
After cooling down engine, again check oil/fluid levels including engine oil and engine coolant. Refill to the specified level, if necessary.
Summary of the inspection items:
*: Transmission/transaxle/CVT fluid. power steering fluid, brake fluid, etc.
