ALTERNATE COMMAND MODE The following section is applicable when Alter-
nate Command Mode is activated.
When Alternate Command Mode is activated, an
expanded list of commands can be used after
pressing the TALK switch. In this mode,
available commands are not fully shown on the
display or prompted. Review the expanded
command list when this mode is active. See
examples of Alternate Command Mode screens.
Please note that in this mode the recognition
success rate may be affected as the number of
available commands and ways of speaking each
command are increased. To improve the recog-
nition success rate, try using the Speaker Ad-
aptation Function available in that mode. (See
“Speaker adaptation function (for Alternate
Command Mode)” later in this section.) Other-
wise it is recommended that Alternate Com-
mand Mode be turned OFF and Standard Mode

Activating Alternate Command Mode When the Standard Mode is active, perform the
following steps to switch to the Alternate Com-
mand Mode.
1. Push the SETTING button on the instru-
ment panel.
2. Highlight the “Others” key.
3. Highlight the “Voice Recognition” key. 4. Highlight the “Alternate Command Mode”
key.
5. The confirmation message is displayed on
the screen. Push the “OK” key to activate
the Alternate Command Mode.
Displaying command list If you are controlling the system by voice
commands for the first time or do not know the
appropriate voice command, perform the fol-
lowing procedure for displaying the voice com-
mand list (available only in Alternate Command
Mode). 1. Push the INFO button on the instrument
panel.
2. Select the “Others” key.
3. Select the “Voice Recognition” key.

1. Push the INFO button on the instrument

USING THE SYSTEM
Initialization When the ignition switch is pushed to the ON
position, INFINITI Voice Recognition is initial-
ized, which takes a few seconds. When com-
pleted, the system is ready to accept voice
commands. If the TALK switch is pushed
before the initialization completes the display
will show the message: “Phonetic data down-
loaded. Please wait.” or a beep sounds.
Before starting To get the best performance from INFINITI Voice
Recognition, observe the following.
● Keep the interior of the vehicle as quiet as
possible. Close the windows to eliminate the
surrounding noises (traffic noises, vibration
sounds, etc.), which may prevent the system
from recognizing the voice commands cor-
rectly.
● When the air conditioner is in the AUTO
mode, the fan speed decreases automati-
cally for easy recognition.SAA2547

● Push the BACK button once to return to the
previous screen.
● If you want to cancel the command, push
and hold the TALK switch for 1 sec-
ond. The message “Voice canceled” will be
announced.
● To skip the voice guidance function and give
the command immediately, press the TALK
switch to interrupt the system. Re-
member to speak after the tone.
● If you want to adjust the volume of the
system feedback, push the volume control
switch (+ or  ) on the steering wheel or use
the audio system volume knob while the
system is making an announcement.
How to speak numbers :
INFINITI Voice Recognition requires a certain
way to speak numbers when giving voice com-
mands. Refer to the following examples.
General rule
Only single digits 0 (zero) to 9 can be used. (For
example, if you would like to say 500, “five zero
zero” can be used, but “five hundred” cannot. Phone numbers
Speak phone numbers according to the follow-
ing examples:
● 1-800-662-6200
– “Dial one eight zero zero six six two six
two zero zero.”
Note 1: For the best voice recognition phone
dialing results, say phone numbers as single
digits.
Note 2: You cannot say 555-6000 as “five five
five six thousands”.
Note 3: When speaking a house number, speak
the number “0” as “zero”. If the letter “o (Oh)”
is included in the house number, it will not be
recognized as the number “0 (zero)” even if you
speak “oh” instead of “zero”. Please speak
“zero” for the number “0 (zero)”, “oh” for the
letter “o (oh)”.
Speaker adaptation function (for
Alternate Command Mode) The voice recognition system has a function to
learn the user’s voice for better voice recogni-
tion performance. The system can memorize the
voices of up to three persons.
Having the system learn the user’s voice:
1. Push the SETTING button on the instru-
ment panel and select the “Others” key.
2. Select the “Voice Recognition” key.
3. Select the “Speaker Adaptation” key. SAA2549

Speaker Adaptation function settings :
Edit User Name
Edit the user name using the keypad displayed
on the screen.
Delete Voice Data
Resets the user’s voice that the voice recogni-
tion system has learned.
Continuous Learning
When this item is turned to ON, you can have
the system learn the voice commands in suc-
cession, without selecting commands one by
one. Minimize voice feedback (for
Alternate Command Mode) To minimize the voice feedback from the sys-
tem, perform the following steps.
1. Push the SETTING button on the instru-
ment panel.
2. Select the “Others” key.
3. Select the “Voice Recognition” key.
4. Select the “Minimize Voice Feedback”
key.
5. The setting is turned to ON and the voice
guidance will now be reduced when using
the Voice Recognition system.SAA2553

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE The system should respond correctly to all voice commands without difficulty. If problems are encountered, follow the solutions given in this guide for
the appropriate error.
Where the solutions are listed by number, try each solution in turn, starting with number one, until the problem is resolved. Symptom/error message Solution
Displays “COMMAND NOT RECOGNIZED” or the
system fails to interpret the command correctly. 1. Ensure that the command format is valid, see “Command List” earlier in this section.
2. Speak clearly without pausing between words and at a level appropriate to the ambient noise level.
3. Ensure that the ambient noise level is not excessive, for example, windows open or defrost on.
NOTE:
If it is too noisy to use the phone, it is likely that voice commands will not be recognized. 4. If optional words of the command have been omitted, then the command should be tried with these
in place.
The system consistently selects the wrong voic-
etag in the phonebook. 1. Ensure that the voicetag requested matches what was originally stored. (See “BLUETOOTH  HANDS-
FREE PHONE SYSTEM (models with navigation system)” earlier in this section; page 4-85.)
2. Replace one of the voicetags being confused with a different voicetag.
The system cannot be operated. 1. Make sure that the soft top is usable. If the soft top is not working, contact an INFINITI retailer.
2. Close the retractable hard top.
3. Open and close the retractable hard top before operating the system.

Remember, drinking and driving don’t mix! And
that is true for drugs, too (over-the-counter,
prescription, and illegal drugs). Don’t drive if
your ability to operate your vehicle is impaired
by alcohol, drugs, or some other physical con-
dition.
ALL-WHEEL DRIVE (AWD) DRIVING
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WARNING● Do not drive beyond the performance capa-
bility of the tires, even with AWD engaged.
Accelerating quickly, sharp steering maneu-
vers or sudden braking may cause loss of
control.
● Always use tires of the same type, size,
brand, construction (bias, bias-belted or ra-
dial), and tread pattern on all four wheels.
Install tire chains on the rear wheels when
driving on slippery roads and drive carefully.
● This vehicle is not designed for offroad
(rough road) use. Do not drive on sandy or
muddy roads that tires may get stuck in. ● For AWD equipped vehicles, do not attempt
to raise two wheels off the ground and shift
the transmission to any D (Drive) or R (Re-
verse) position with the engine running. Do-
ing so may result in drivetrain damage or
unexpected vehicle movement which could
result in serious vehicle damage or personal
injury.
● Do not attempt to test an AWD equipped ve-
hicle on a 2-wheel dynamometer, (such as
the dynamometers used by some states for
emissions testing), or similar equipment
even if the other two wheels are raised off
the ground. Make sure you inform test facil-
ity personnel that your vehicle is equipped
with AWD before it is placed on a dynamom-
eter. Using the wrong test equipment may
result in drivetrain damage or unexpected
vehicle movement which could result in seri-
ous vehicle damage or personal injury.
● When a wheel is off the ground due to an
unlevel surface, do not spin the wheel
excessively. WARNINGDo not operate the push-button ignition switch
while driving the vehicle except in an emer-
gency. (The engine will stop when the ignition
switch is pushed 3 consecutive times or the
ignition switch is pushed and held for more
than 2 seconds.) If the engine stops while the
vehicle is being driven, this could lead to a
crash and serious injury.
Before operating the push-button ignition
switch, be sure to move the selector lever to the
P (Park) position (for automatic transmission
model) or the shift lever to the N (Neutral)

OPERATING RANGE FOR ENGINE
START FUNCTION The Intelligent Key can only be used for starting
the engine when the Intelligent Key is within the
specified operating range
 1
.
When the Intelligent Key battery is almost dis-
charged or strong radio waves are present near
the operating location, the Intelligent Key sys-
tem’s operating range becomes narrower and
may not function properly.
If the Intelligent Key is within the operating
range, it is possible for anyone, even someone
who does not carry the Intelligent Key, to push
the ignition switch to start the engine. ● The trunk area is not included in the operat-
ing range but the Intelligent Key may func-
tion.
● If the Intelligent Key is placed on the instru-
ment panel, rear parcel shelf, inside the
glove box or door pocket, the Intelligent Key
may not function.
● If the Intelligent Key is placed near the door
or window outside the vehicle, the Intelli-
gent Key may function.
PUSH-BUTTON IGNITION SWITCH
OPERATION When the ignition switch is pushed without
depressing the brake pedal (automatic trans-
mission model) or the clutch pedal (manual
transmission model), the ignition switch posi-
tion will change as follows:
● Push center once to change to ACC.
● Push center two times to change to ON.
● Push center three times to change to OFF.
(No position illuminates.)
● Push center four times to return to ACC.
● Open or close any door to return to LOCK

The ignition switch is equipped with an anti-
theft steering lock device.
In order for the steering wheel to be locked, it
must be turned about 1/8 of a right or left turn
from the straight up position.
To lock the steering wheel, shift the ignition
switch to the LOCK position. To unlock the steer-
ing wheel, push the ignition switch. If the steer-
ing lock release malfunction indicator appears
on the dot matrix liquid crystal display, push the
push-button ignition switch again while lightly
turning the steering wheel right and left. (See
“DOT MATRIX LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY” in the
“2. Instruments and controls” section.)
If the battery of the vehicle is discharged, the
push-button ignition switch cannot be turned
from the LOCK position.
Some indicators and warnings for operation are
displayed on the dot matrix liquid crystal dis-
play between the speedometer and tachometer.
(See “DOT MATRIX LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY” in
the “2. Instruments and controls” section.)
Automatic transmission models The ignition lock is designed so that the ignition
switch position cannot be switched to LOCK
until the selector lever is moved to the P (Park)
position. When the ignition switch cannot be pushed
toward the LOCK position, proceed as follows:
1. Move the selector lever into the P (Park)
position.
2. Push the ignition switch to the OFF posi-
tion. The ignition switch position indicator
will not illuminate.
3. Open the door. The ignition switch will
change to the LOCK position.
The selector lever can be moved from the P (Park)
position if the ignition switch is in the ON posi-
tion and the brake pedal is depressed.
PUSH-BUTTON IGNITION SWITCH
POSITIONS
LOCK (Normal parking position) The ignition switch can only be locked in this
position.
The ignition switch will be unlocked when it is
pushed to the ACC position while carrying the
Intelligent Key or with the Intelligent Key in-
serted in the port.
ACC (Accessories) This position activates electrical accessories
such as the radio, when the engine is not
running. ON (Normal operating position) This position turns on the ignition system and
electrical accessories.
OFF The engine can be turned off without locking
the steering wheel.
The ignition lock is designed so that the ignition
switch cannot be switched to the LOCK position
until the selector lever is moved to the P (Park)
position.
CAUTIONDo not leave the vehicle with the push-button
ignition switch in ACC or ON positions when the
engine is not running for an extended period.
This can discharge the battery.
Emergency engine shut off To shut off the engine in an emergency situation
while driving peform the following procedure:
− Rapidly push the push-button ignition switch
3 consecutive times, or
− Push and hold the push-button ignition for
more than 2 seconds.
