Precautions for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) “AIR BAG” and “SEAT
BELT PRE-TENSIONER”

The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted.
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of this Service Man-
ual.
WAR NIN G:

To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death
in the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be per-
formed by an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.

Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to per-
sonal injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air
Bag Module, see the SRS section.

Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or
harness connectors.

CAUTION:

If it becomes necessary to start the engine with a booster battery and jumper cables, use a 12-volt
booster battery.

After connecting battery cables, ensure that they are tightly clamped to battery terminals for good
contact.

Never add distilled water through the hole used to check specific gravity.
METHODS OF PREVENTING OVER-DISCHARGE
The following precautions must be taken to prevent over-discharging
a battery.

The battery surface (particularly its top) should always be kept
clean and dry.

The terminal connections should be clean and tight.

At every routine maintenance, check the electrolyte level.
This also applies to batteries designated as “low maintenance”
and “maintenance-free”.

When the vehicle is not going to be used over a long period of
time, disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Check the charge condition of the battery.
Periodically check the specific gravity of the electrolyte. Keep a
close check on charge condition to prevent over-discharge.
CHECKING ELECTROLYTE LEVEL
WAR NIN G:
Do not allow battery fluid to come in contact with skin, eyes, fabrics, or painted surfaces. After touch-
ing a battery, do not touch or rub your eyes until you have thoroughly washed your hands. If acid con-
tacts eyes, skin or clothing, immediately flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention.

When removing or disassembling each component, be careful not to damage or deform it. If a component
may be subject to interference, be sure to protect it with a shop cloth.

When removing (disengaging) components with a screwdriver or similar tool, be sure to wrap the compo-
nent with a shop cloth or vinyl tape to protect it.

Protect the removed parts with a shop cloth and keep them.

Replace a deformed or damaged clip.

If a part is specified as a non-reusable part, always replace it with new one.

Be sure to tighten bolts and nuts securely to the specified torque.

After re-installation is completed, be sure to check that each part works normally.

Follow the steps below to clean components.
–Water soluble foul: Dip a soft cloth into lukewarm water, and wring the water out of the cloth to wipe the
fouled area.
Then rub with a soft and dry cloth.
–Oily foul: Dip a soft cloth into lukewarm water with mild detergent (concentration: within 2 to 3%), and wipe
the fouled area.
Then dip a cloth into fresh water, and wring the water out of the cloth to wipe the detergent off. Then rub
with a soft and dry cloth.

Do not use organic solvent such as thinner, benzene, alcohol, or gasoline.

For genuine leather seats, use a genuine leather seat cleaner.

Do not use electrical test equipment to check SRS circuits unless instructed to in this Service Manual.

Before servicing the SRS, turn ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least 3 min-
utes.
For approximately 3 minutes after the cables are removed, it is still possible for the air bags and seat belt
pre-tensioners to deploy. Therefore, do not work on any SRS connectors or wires until at least 3 minutes
have passed.

The air diagnosis sensor unit must always be installed with the arrow mark “⇐” pointing toward the front of
the vehicle for proper operation. Also check air bag diagnosis sensor unit for cracks, deformities or rust
before installation and replace as required.

The spiral cable must be aligned with the neutral position since its rotations are limited. Do not attempt to
turn steering wheel or column after removal of steering gear.

Handle air bag module carefully. Always place driver and front passenger air bag modules with the pad
side facing upward and seat mounted front side air bag module standing with the stud bolt side facing
down.

Conduct self-diagnosis to check entire SRS for proper function after replacing any components.

After air bag inflates, the front instrument panel assembly should be replaced if damaged.

Precautions for Transfer Assembly and Transfer Control Unit ReplacementEDS002H4
When replacing transfer assembly or transfer control unit, check the 4WD shift indicator lamp as follows.
1. Turn ignition switch “ON”.
2. Check 4WD shift indicator lamp is turned ON for approx. 1 second.

If OK, the position between transfer assembly and transfer control unit is correct.

If NG, the position is different between transfer assembly and transfer control unit.
Adjust the position between transfer assembly and transfer control unit. Refer to TF-4, "
METHOD FOR
POSITION ADJUSTMENT" .
METHOD FOR POSITION ADJUSTMENT
1. Start engine. Run the engine for at least 10 seconds.
2. Stop vehicle and move A/T selector lever to “N” position with brake pedal depressed. Stay in "N" for at
least 2 seconds.
3. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD” position. Stay in "2WD" for at least 2 seconds.
4. Turn ignition switch “OFF”.
5. Start engine.
6. Erase self-diagnosis. Refer to TF-47, "
How to Erase Self-diagnostic Results" (with CONSULT-II) or TF-
53, "ERASE SELF-DIAGNOSIS" (without CONSULT-II).
7. Check 4WD shift indicator lamp. Refer to TF-32, "
CHECK BEFORE ENGINE IS STARTED" .
If 4WD shift indicator lamp does not indicate "2WD", install new transfer control unit and retry the above
check.

Before connecting or disconnecting the transfer control
unit harness connector, turn ignition switch “OFF” and dis-
connect battery ground cable. Failure to do so may damage
the transfer control unit. Battery voltage is applied to trans-
fer control unit even if ignition switch is turned “OFF”.

c. If calculated balance weight value exceeds 50 g (1.76 oz), install
two balance weight sheets in line with each other as shown.
CAUTION:
Do not install one balance weight sheet on top of another.
3. Start wheel balancer again.
4. Install drive-in balance weight on inner side of road wheel in the
wheel balancer indication position (angle).
CAUTION:
Do not install more than two balance weights.
5. Start wheel balancer. Make sure that inner and outer residual
imbalance values are 5 g (0.18 oz) each or below.

If either residual imbalance value exceeds 5 g (0.18 oz), repeat installation procedures.

NOTE:
Follow the maintenance schedule for tire rotation service intervals. Refer to MA-5, "

1. Rotate the tires on each side from front to back as shown. Do
not include the spare tire when rotating the tires.
CAUTION:
When installing wheels, tighten them diagonally by dividing
the work two to three times in order to prevent the wheels
from developing any distortion.
2. Adjust the tire pressure to specification. Refer to WT-34, "
Tire" .
3. After the tire rotation, retighten the wheel nuts after the vehicle
has been driven for 1,000 km (600 miles), and also after every
wheel and tire have been installed such as after repairing a flat
tire.
